There’s one thing that wvw rating system miss: dynamicity. With the actual formula to determine the server’s points this is not achieved. This leads eventually to a state of boredom after several identical matchups. U’ll either change server, quit gw2, or don’t play wvw at all.
I think that usually the best solution is the simplest one:
- the server who won a matchup should advance
- the 2’nd place keeps it’s spot
- the loosing server goes down 1 tier.
Here’s my simple and efficient method that is worth of testing.

I agree with you there VLN, I been saying that myself in my guild for quite some time.

Stale matches with predictable outcomes are one of the biggest structual problems of WvW.

But this proposed solution would do nothing other than create blowout match-ups(even worse then the ones we have now).

Due to the nature of the three team WvW dynamic you need three strong servers in a match otherwise the strongest server runs away with a blowout victory. Bringing a stronger server from a tier above, and a weaker server from a tier below would create the conditions for massive one sided match-ups that would be worse than anything we have now.

I think the current system reflects reality better. Take T1 NA for example. Blackgate came third one week. The following week they came first. Why? Because JQ was playing less and BG came out in full force and pushed harder than usual. To beat JQ isn’t an easy accomplishment. If they had of been playing that way in Tier 2 it would have been a massive blowout. The points system that allowed BG to stay in Tier 1 helped keep balance. Servers have off and on weeks, but you need to rank them according to their average performance, not just the performance the week prior. All doing this would achieve is having more unbalanced match ups.

Hi VLNt,
These arguments have gone back and forth many times.

That said, I really liked your point about “dynamicity” though, and thought I’d try to look in to this a bit more. (…and you did mention math in your thread title …. sooo….).

Using data from MOS ladder evolution, I had a look at the the change in rankings of every server for the weeks 42 to 52 last year, versus 6 to 16 this year (an arbitrary selection, which I acknowledge does not capture for instance Kaineng’s rise, but does capture Miller’s Sound rise and fall — I’d contend its broadly representative).

In the earlier period, the average (mean) number of ranking changes for a server was 9.2+/-4.2. In the more recent period, this changes to 4.8+/-3.4.

I’ll leave it at that!

One thing that might help with mobility is to shorten the history used compiling the score. That way, a new influx/loss of points produced would allow players to change rankings on a whim. I’m thinking like a 7 day history or less. So instead of a historical average the players can simply “want in more” as our Blackgate friends are fond of saying.

Anet have already said they are working on this and we may have a change by the end of this month.

Thank you the response.

Let me address your concern there. It is not the fact that a server dominates so handily, it is the fact it happens for weeks on end, and the Glicko system you use does not allow for shifts in population like we are seeing happen in T1 fast enough. A simple 1up 1 down system would, I believe suit everyone, in any tier, in any region, and definately avoid any stale matchups as servers would be more mobile.

Without going into specifics as we are still testing out some of the changes, we are looking to address the problems with our implementation of Glicko, especially the fact that matchups are not varying enough to provide accurate ranking data.

Is there any plan for any temporary solution while you are working on this? If not is there any ETA or an approximation of when we will see any changes? Our servers are still losing players as we speak, and we of course would like to bring back some good news to give people hope again.

The things we are working in should be going live in the next few weeks, if all goes well on the testing front. Thus temporary solutions are not worth the time they would take. I can’t give a definite timeline, because things can change, but hopefully you will see changes by the end of the month.

A playoff system may be better.

Sure this will lead to some very unbalanced matches with the possibility of a T1 server fighting against a T8 server, but at least you will not be against the same server week after week.

Macros, you can use them as long as they arent macros.
Remember to buy the officially endorsed GW2 Steel Series Keyboard, it supports macros!
WvW, we only care if it affects the servers we play on.

Say what you want, I want some fresh blood to kill…SoR and Blackgate are the only things I get to murder in WvW, (well more so them killing me), but its nearly to the point where there movements are predictable because we fought them so many times you just know where there heading.
