I think it’s around 20-30% smaller than OS arena, just trying to look at player sizes gives me this impression. Maybe it’s because of no stairs on the sides just making it look like that, we will see…

No, it’s rather 20% of what OS is now. You’re being tricked by the spectator size. Just remove that with photoshop or paint and you’re be left with a tiny ring where max 10v10 can take place.
Honestly I’m not surprised if they screw it up on purpose. They just wanna give a big fat finger to the people trying to force GvG into the game, so they just add every deathmatch game mode with every number besides the requested one.
I don’t even care, this is glorious.
GW2 is best gaem evar.
We will see how it ends. After watching stream I’m not sure if the size will be bigger problem or that you can fall off the edges. Will have to put the decorations all around to prevent falling then – the Decorations UI window on stream showed stacks of 20 for decoration type, should be enough?
The small size can prevent from long kiting rounds though or running out of combat. If you are creative with placing the obstacles maaaaaybe it can work out just fine. I wonder about how much server resources will be reserved for these arenas – lag you know, noone likes it, and I heard voices it was getting laggy in spvp with max size teams. I like that spectators are separated from the action.
We wait and see, hopefully some beta tests come relatively soon™ and ppl get to try this out by themselves.

They said that one can enable some sort of barrier around the edge that prevents falling off.
i cant believe this thread isnt like 20 pages yet, considering how kittening vocal the gvg crowd is o.O

They’ll probably won’t be happy because of whatever reason.
Too small, too big, lacks customization, no real GvG infrastructure for LB’s, no GvG specific balancing, etc. etc.
the beautiful thing about gvg’s is that its meta encompasses so many viable possibilities. ive never seen more build variety anywhere else. until recently, only the engies and rangers have been left out. but we have rangers now, and we’ll have likely have engies in there when the patch hits. in other words, indirectly, they’ve done a great job overall balancing gvg’s. and they did this by staying out of it.
so we cant complain about the balancing aspect. major concern now with GH is the size of arena, and allowing for enough players to do 20v20.
Player control over the battleground can make up for lack of developer balance.
The original Starcraft and its expansion, for example, was in no way balanced on the game’s default maps. The player base (and eventually professional leagues) took advantage of the map editors to create more competitive maps.
Now certainly, I would never expect people to be able to change entire maps, but the point is if players can control various variables, then they will do well on their own as long as stuff doesn’t get randomly nerf batted. For example, currently in the OS, there’s no way to control unwanted interference or prevent people who don’t want to follow the rules from breaking them. This will change.
The fact that gvg can exist currently is already proof enough of this concept, I would think.

What? The balance in “GvG” is a joke, most weapon sets never get a look in as it is the same old ones that get used, condi builds do not exist because the mechanics of the game were made for 5v5 and break when you have a bunch of guards/warriors in a ball who can endlessly AOE heal & AOE condie clear, and as for the class balance, LOL, that can roughly be summed up as 4 classes that have been vastly overrepresentated, the other four vastly underrepresentated to the point two of them have been non-existent for most of the game, one of them still is.
(edited by zinkz.7045)
the only thing truly broken about gvg balance is how nonviable condi specs are. some profs have more viable builds than others. and many weapon sets aren’t viable sure, but the same issue in spvp. also, there is even more variation in raids compared to gvg.
compared to the spvp meta, gvg has a ton more variety.
I think Tuesday patch will bring more build variety to gvg’s. and the elite specs even moreso. expect to see chronomancers for example, and lots of reapers in the frontline.

Size could use a tweak but besides that seems pretty legit.
Sounds like they’re more ahead of the program that I’d think.
2500 range seems a bit small though.
I bet the size is related to skill ranges. The arena will still be way more spacious than the original windmill area.

Its too shiny! Hehe i think the GvG group is happly with any thing even OS was something the GvG groups loved (all though they wanted more). If any thing this is a lot more then what ppl wanted.
As a long time gvg enthusiast, im really really excited about this. Im pretty much sold on expansion now lol.
IDK if im reading it right. But does it say its only 5v5?
guild leaderboards will initially only be for 5v5, but they hope to expand them to other game modes.

stronghold migh be the TA/RA equivalent and gvg being similiar stronghold with more paths , having its own leadderboard, could happend…..
And proly we will have the options ot host a scrimnage or ranked match for sure.
I don’t know about anyone else, but I wanted more like a Mini WvW type GvG. Kinda like that new stronghold map but with way more people. I mean the Arena brawl thing is cool and maybe we’ll get some interesting styles at a later date like “King of the Hill” that would be very fun. But what I was hoping for was a temporary mini WvW type map with balanced teams.
Arenanet surely has been doing a great job communicating with DPS and it’s amazing they give such detailed answers already such as the size of the ring.
What they do have to understand though, is that the size is just not big enough. 3500 would do the job, but that’s a pretty big improvement. Sure it would be nice to have the size of OS, but that would be kinda unrealistic for a guild hall.
Size surely does matter for this fact and it should be #1 priority on changes for the arena. After that, they can look at things like a timer, spectator mode and ranking.

This is possible. You can pretty much do anything in the arena. It doesn’t force you to go with a specific number. You can even do it with your own guild alone.

There’s no limit on the arena, and if there was one it would probably come down to 100 or so.
They said the 5vs5 Guild Teams and leaderboard was meant for structured PvP, so I don’t think it applies to this arena.
“Guild Teams: An Overview
A PvP guild team is a named, five-player subset of your guild roster that fights together in structured PvP. It will have its own rating, and as such, its own place in a new guild-team leaderboard. Fighting as teams will help fuel your guild with the resources it needs to power its guild hall.”

They also mentioned that they haven’t decided the exact size yet and now that we have active WvW specialists here we can get our concerns heard. Instead of saying things like blaargh this sucks not good enough won’t buy expansion anet sucks, giving actual constructive feedback we may indeed get the GvG arena the community wants.
You are right Frou, so here is my feedback:
Anet, please make it big enough for 20v20 matches in the same fashion we have in OS now. Dont screw it up on purpose since you obviously can do it.
Our limiting factor is size of the arena and the number of players that can join.
All you have to do is increase a number and make the space bigger if needed.
Thank you.
Dont screw it up on purpose since you obviously can do it.
why be rude

Because the only way this end up not working is a deliberate decision by the dev team.
I bet the size is related to skill ranges. The arena will still be way more spacious than the original windmill area.
20s all day at the old windmill area, which was much narrower, but longer than this area is. All this will do is to force another meta change in GvG, but at least now GvG guilds have a legit place to fight without interference, and with guaranteed dimensions.
It does seem that 10s and 15s will be the order of the day with the size of the arena. 20s might be a touch large for this size of space with the current meta. Kinda hard to pirate ship in this arena. Perhaps we will have more odd numbers like 12s or something.

Exactly. The windmill had that narrow choke point in addition to some hilly terrain features that became part of the tactics for that area. That all went away with OS, which in turn caused the development of a new meta. For example, gank was rudimentary and restricted in the windmill location. The openness of the OS allowed for gank to explode into the meta. This new arena will see the development of new tactics.

New tactics sounds great! And almost at a per-arena level, given the dynamic placement of obstacles. I’m really looking forward to this. It feels a bit small for 20v20, but I was never a big fan of such blob-on-blog games. 15v15 to 10v10 looks just awesome in this space.
I’m really hoping we see three-party fights. 2v2, then a neutral arena-master changing the field over time.
Down the road, I’d love some bigger arenas, built-in objectives (kill pts, respawn pts, capture the flag points). I hope this becomes “a thing”.
I’d personally love to see at least two game modes out of this. An 8v8 capture the flag mode similar to the original guild wars, and an all out 12v12 team domination mode with the option to increase the cap to 15v15, 25v25, and 50v50. The TDM mode should have siege equipment permissible.
Finally, no more qq in bl map chat about how a roamer chased a zergling into a fight and ruined everything for all of the guilds and caused the end of the world by adding to their fight, it’s going to be overrrrrrrrr!
I’m not going to argue the merits of doing GvG but the undeniable end result of a unique GvG mode is that WvW will have less players when WvW needs them the most. This will be bad for WvW, at least short term.
WvW is the only thing I do in game but good riddance, maybe it will force anet to actually put some resources into developing it properly.
The best part is … “Guild wars”, GvG, is here after 2 YEARS since “Guild wars” release.
After 2 years of ignoring the community. When A LOT of ppl left (Im playing gw2 1-2hours per week, with luck)
And if u wanna play “Guild wars”, GvG, u need to buy the game AGAIN
