So it’s more of a place where we get to pretend we’re in WvW but not really doing anything? I guess that’s fine if you just like the WvW activities without caring for how well your server does.

That poses another question: What will be the incentive to hold any objective? If it’s a “yes” to WXP and/or achievements (asked above), then this map is bound to end up nothing but a zerg train.

I hope this will be a place for a more interesting pvp for organized group of all size

Pvers will be more incline to join EB and BL’s to complete theyr achievements and pvdoor, and the wvwers who still care about ppt

Not to be rude but please read the faq first. Majority of these questions have been answered there for some time now.

Yes you can pick to go directly to the Edge from the drop down.

The Edge will create overflow as necessary.

The map does not influence war score nor is it affected by bloodlust. You can however gain wxp. This would be the number one reason to enter this map after queuing for a BL or EBG over just sitting in la.

Yes the map contains pve elements. However they are in sections vs spread out all over like the currant wvw. By the descriptions you can think of them like creep camps in a moba, little mob camps.

Are any mechanics being implemented (or tested I guess) in this map to the end of spreading players out and rewarding organized positioning and coordinated skill use over stacking and spamming? And if any such mechanics work out, is it possible they’ll spread to the core maps?

Sigh. You don’t get it. A lot of people zerg in large groups because they enjoy it. No one forces people to do it. If you don’t enjoy it, don’t do it.

Also, if you think a zerg is just stacking and spamming, you play with the wrong commanders.

Oh I do get it, but those people are:
(A) The minority, most players still do not participate in the WvW game mode, in my experience by and large for the reasons I stated. The only new players I’ve seen since launch are cheevo chasers, and they’re gone as soon as they’ve milked the last achievement from the mode.
(B) Incredibly boring. I’ve participated in the mode the same as you, stacking and spamming while following a blue dorito is all there is to it. Occasionally broken up by pressing F when a build or revive swatch pops up in front of you. If you have a larger amount of people stacking and spamming more often than your enemy, you will win. Nothing more to it than that, and that is not enough to interest normal people.

EDIT: Now that isn’t to say there aren’t exceptions. I don’t know what server you are on, but I am well aware that T1 servers do much more than stack and spam, but they do so with massive communication and organization systems separate from the game. That is not okay, that is a giant flaw in the game mode which causes T2 servers and down to fall back on mindless zerging, stacking and spamming. The game mode is incomplete, there need to be real in-game tools to organize and strategize between players and leaders, assign roles and position, find particular builds, organize by builds, and group those builds into proper ranks and position; and timing and cues to pull it all together in proper sequence. I expected more from this game mode, loved the idea of massive battles, but I imagined things like the Battle for Helms deep and the The Thousand Orc army, not following around a single person circling a map saying ‘build here’, ‘attack there’, and ‘need supply at X’; and I will not accept that this is the best ANet can do. But until we have better tools for actual play and counterplay in massive conflicts, it’s stack and spamming for nearly all players.

Not to get to far off topic here. Conncept a) you shouldn’t assume what others are thinking or their reasons for not participating in wvw. In m my experience there are lots of new people in wvw all the time, my guild gets them all the time. Often they are brought to wvw by a friend because they had no interest in pvp and thought wvw was like spvp or things like arathi basin. Also if you are not seeing new players it is more likely because you don’t follow the commander. New players tend to head for the commander so they can learn the ropes.
B) as stated you have just been following mediocre commanders from the sounds of it. Now it is also possible your temperament is not suited to mass combat, that’s okay. But you really should not use this as justification for it having no place in the game. Now I would like to see the game do more to promote multiple zergs over a single map zerg, but that’s me. As to it being boring you should try following a GoF commander on Blackgate when we take on zergs larger than our own and out maneuver and just out play them. Now that’s fun.

Now back on topic based on the faq and other info previously available there will be moblairs. These are intended to be ppotentially solo or small group objectives. So is the ganking of the people attempting to take on the lairs. There is also seige worthy objectuves so expect zerg and non zerg content. Plus if those destructable bridges are actuslly in you should be able to potentially screw over an enemy zerg by blowing the bridge.

How will this help matches where there are overpopulated servers vs underpopulated servers? If the matchup is YB/BP/DR, will YB have 3 overflow maps and BP/DR still not able to fill the 4 main wvw maps, much less even ONE edge of the mists map? What good is overflow map #3 if there are no enemies?

How is this helping the #1 problem with wvw, population imbalance?

Why was so much effort put into this when commander tags are still broken, skill lag is a persistent problem, and the various other problems that have been around since game release that are killing the game and nothing is being done about?

^ +1, fix the current issues, don’t try to cover them up with new content.

If they implemented the right to have your own guildhall with upgrades and all (in that objective), I’d defend my objective 24/7 and drop school .. O.o … Make it happen!

I still have major concerns about the impact adding a zone of this type will have on servers who’s population numbers are currently struggling. I can see the benefit it offers to those who have constant overflows, but there are real potential negatives to implementing this at a time when it will dilute the spread of people in WvW even further and, probably, be considerably less fun on those servers where overflows are non-existent. I also worry that it will be yet another incentive for people to flock from low pop servers to high ones.

Ideally, they need to merge servers or come up with a better solution to populations. Minimally, I think these maps need to be untethered from servers and fill from all servers on queues until overflow conditions are met. Let’s work toward evening the play experience and make it fun for those on all servers – not just those in the top 4-5 populated servers.

That’s true, but, you know… People do what they find fun to do in the game. If they feel like EoM exclusively, there’s not much you can do to draw them to WvW maps as their idea of fun would be probably quite different than the one that includes PPT and ladder position.

However, I still have some concerns and in particular there was 1 glaring thing that stood out here, which was, play with your friends.

Basically, the way it works currently is; you pull up the WvW map interface and simply queue up using the Edge of the Mists option. You are then placed into the next available spot in an Edge map. The dev’s didn’t spell it out, but it sounded like you could join on each other’s Edge instance (again unconfirmed). Nonetheless, this is a huge issue. We need to be able to easily play with our friends in WvW, that is something that I thought would ideally be resolved by having a ’no-queue’ map system. Please, develop this. Having to trick the system to allowing us to play with our friends by queue’ing up, joining on each other’s instances, dropping groups, shifting players around, etc, is going to lead to dead population. We need systems that automatically put us with the people we want to be with when we play.

Another issue that was not touched on was the max players allowed per map; seems like a lot of space and thus this is really shifting towards looking like a 24-7 karma train map. I really hope steps are taken to combat this.

The stream ended and my conclusion is that the map looks certainly nice and i think it will be enjoyable to play.

BUT this is a really big issue.

I expected it to be an never ending open pvp map just to waste some time. But it is its own game mode. The matchup has objectives (Keeps etc.) to be taken and it can be won. Matchup lasts a couple hours according to stream.

This is like the non-ranked version of WvW with some tweaks. This will be really bad for overall WvW population. Now WvW population will split between ranked and non ranked players. To split a population heavy dependent gamemode like WvW is really a bad idea.

Normally you are able to join your friend’s overflow. I think it will work the same way for this map.

Normally you are able to join your friend’s overflow. I think it will work the same way for this map.

Like I said, sounds like you can join overflows, but this brings us back to the issue then of groups that are full and a 6th is looking to join on the group. Yes, he can get in, but it requires manual circumvention of a flawed queue system to get the player in. Just resolve the issue by giving two options for queue’ing: Join the next highest-population map with an available position, or join a specific, already existing EDGE map just like WvW and hot-join.

It’s good that they made new map, but i hope that there will be some reason to fight in this map. Killing enemy is fun, but it’s even more fun when you get reward for it. For example some armor and weapon skins (real skins so we don’t need to use fine stones) would be nice so everybody would know who have killed 200k enemies in edge of the mist or something.

I didn’t get a chance to watch the stream (stuck at work), but after reading what other people said, here are two things that will make or break this for me:

1) Can I join with someone else? I’m married to a gamer, so if this is another event where we can’t queue in together, there’s little chance we’ll pay this much attention.

2) What are the stakes of winning? If this is something like Hall of Heroes and unlocks something for your server/group upon winning, then this is one of the most exciting releases for me since launch. If there’s just some glory, gold, or some other small personal reward…then I probably won’t mess with this much.

Yeah it sucks to be on receiving end of it, and I do not like Skyhammer fo this exact reason (in addition to cannon itself), but I’m assuming this is something a lot of players would love to do and have huge satisfaction doing that, so… Let it be and be vigilant to not fall into this trap. You can’t have MMO environment that fits perfectly your personal ideas of fun.

We will see the same issues we had with Tequatl maps except the part about guesting. And the only solution i see is that they finally give us the option to switch between overflows. Give us a list of the map and all avaible overflows to it. Of course this can cause issues depending on how overflows are created and closed.

My Opinion on the New Map:::

  • Looks Neat, but Lower Population servers (Anvil Rock for example) barely have enough people to not be outmanned on their own borderland. I don’t see very many people going to this map, unless its another Achievement sink, in which case, everyone shows up to do it, then leaves a week later.
  • There seems to be a lot of new boss mechanics worked into the maps, and they aren’t designed to be done solo (but I’ve heard that before…). Still good stuff.
  • Every different thing that can be captured has its own mechanics, which is awesome!
  • You showed us almost all of the Jungle area, and some of the Arctic area, but you only showed us the inside of one building in the desert, but none of the rest of the desert area. It would have been nice to see the other parts, instead of watching you get forced choked by the boss for 30 seconds then port away to go show off something else.

I have refreshed that page multiple times but seen nothing yet, I also still have the message on the forum that they will livestream something and now somebody said it’s already on or even over?

Now November 8th, at noon PST does not say anything.

So anybody can confirm. It’s already over or not or still needs to start and if so any place to see the video again?

Well, from watching it I think that the fights are gonna be better than the current maps. You have the players to contend with, as well as better npc enemies to fight. Not only that, but the physical effects from having multiple objectives near your keep.

Matches won’t be a week long, so it will be more competitive. You get all the other WvW benefits in this zone as well.

So, why in the hell would you want to fight in the regular WvW maps? I can understand people wanting to fight in EB, but why the BL? Not many people will care about ppt after reset, if they are losing, and then everyone will just want to flock to this new map for better fights, and more competition.

Seems this map will actually kill WvW, the way that we know it. Whether that is a good or bad thing is yet to be seen. But, the new stuff does look awesome, and I can’t wait to get my hands on it.

Did they explain how the queue system is going to work?

When I join, does it just toss me on a random color that needs people on the overflow that is currently being filled? Meaning I will potentially be fighting my own guild/server just based on random chance?

Does it build the RED side off red servers as they enter, or just random?

What stops people from just leaving an overflow where their “color” is getting destroyed, and going to another overflow where things are better. This creates a “dead” spot where new joining people keep getting tossed into a losing fight that people are jumping out of like rats from a sinking ship. (Think joining a TEQ overflow that is losing while 3 winning ones are going on you want into).

If it is all completely random, I might be able to finally duel my own guild for fun in WvW gear, assuming we can figure out how to make it on the same map on opposite sides. That is a plus. That said, the maps are huge, and I see the “Champ Train” mentality developing since there is no allegiance, and who really cares to defend when there is no point.

It is bad enough on our HOME server getting people to defend objectives, but on a random map with random people? Who would bother defending anything when they can WEXP train around the map. So Wexp trains and duels to accompany all these cool and innovative features that may never get used because no one wants to bother with them.
