GW2 Livestream: Edge of the Mists

They are not everywhere, what are you talking about. You’ve got a sneak peak of an EMPTY map. There’s NOTHING going on on it, that was just the way to show SOME action while hosts go on with their script making points they wanted to make.
The WXP train potential is worrysome. That would ruin the entire map. I would suggest removing WXP gain from the map.
Or make it only when you kill players not NPCs or cap stuff.
It depends on specifics. Why are you against “wexp train” on EoM to begin with? Because of blobbing? Well, landscape suggests that blobs will probably have hard time performing efficiently since the map is pretty fragmented with a lot of wide areas separated by a lot of narrow connections. Much like ruins where blobs are sub-optimal tactic if you want to achieve the goal of ruins.
What if this is better and more fun than the ppt game, and people don’t want to leave it?
That would be GREAT I suppose. Right?..
Master Roshi shirt = win.
Sigh. You don’t get it. A lot of people zerg in large groups because they enjoy it. No one forces people to do it. If you don’t enjoy it, don’t do it.
Also, if you think a zerg is just stacking and spamming, you play with the wrong commanders.
Every video of zerg play is pretty much the same, follow commander and do as told, he might as well be multi-boxing. Folks like zerging for the same reasons my kid liked training wheels when she learned to ride her bike, it is safe and less scary. This is a good thing, having that type of environment is incredibly important for new players.
The issue is in GW2 the game rewards zerging in so many ways at the expense of all other game play, that folks are not taking the training wheels off. This make for a game with an extremely low skill cap and horribly boring meta. I cant think of another wvw style MMO where blanket use of PVT wouldn’t be ridiculed, yet here is it encouraged.
Enjoy your training wheels.
There’s always going to be zergs, no matter what you do. The tricky and difficult thing is coming up with a system that incentives all styles of play and truly pushes a person towards picking the ’enjoyable’ play mode as opposed to the most efficient farming play mode. I think ArenaNet can agree here it is tough to tackle as most solutions involve penalties for zerging as opposed to benefits of small-group-play and is something they are absolutely aware of.
Every video of zerg play is pretty much the same
Every rugby game video for me is pretty much the same. Just because I’m not versed in rules, meta, tactics details etc. Every zerg video otoh for me is quite different though.

As someone who played collegiate rugby and still plays club, and as someone who has 3,000 hours played in Guild Wars 2; that analogy is completely off.

The point of analogy was to reveal the flaw in “every” premise.
As someone who understands pretty well what rugby is, you could tell the awful backyard amateur rugby video from all-blacks greatest hits one. As someone who understands pretty well GW2 meta and large scale battles I can tell the PUG all-map zerg video from 1-2-3 guild raids zerg video. They are not “all the same”.

I didn’t dispute your point, just that your analogy was off. Point being, the discrepency in skill is insanely vast with rugby as opposed to guild wars 2. In other words, one is significantly more subtle than the other.
Probably, yes. I was simply thinking about some relatively rare kind of game where you have bigger team numbers. Didn’t expect to see rugby experts jumping right at it lol.
Wow, GJ Anet! Gorgeous map indeed. Cleaner and more life to it than the ruins added to the bl’s. Looking froward to trying this out.
I am well aware that T1 servers do much more than stack and spam, but they do so with massive communication and organization systems separate from the game. That is not okay, that is a giant flaw in the game mode
Funny, I was just having this conversation the other day. I wish Anet would look at all the 3rd party solutions/websites we use and implement them into the game mode. To have separate forum sections on here for each World. To add voice comm’s to the client or even a separate official client to run. Heck, I’d pay for that!
It will be interesting to try the new map. I’m not really sure why there is a focus to make NPCs play differently. It is just surprising that ANET hasn’t gotten the message that people don’t want to fight NPCs in WvW.
I’d love to see the stats of how many people are playing the toxic mini events in WvW. I doubt it is many.
All I see is mobs and capturing points for people to cap, to make it worst they get gold/karma for it as well. Well, now all the karma train players can just go to this map instead of clogging WvW maps and make a queue, making organize guilds unable to play.
Now all Anet need to do is to make WvW achievements to be WvW incentive. For example, defending keeps 200 times. With this, instead of letting the keeps to be flipped, they need to defend it=more fighting.
it almost looks like a mix between wvw and spvp. wouldn’t work for zerg mentality as most of them could get kicked off bridge easy – meant for small 4-5 man teams – like spvp.
interesting – can’t say I like or dislike it yet – it really depends on the ’epic’ness’ of the fights – that’s what makes wvw exciting imo – those epic 50 vs 50 vs 50 man fights
this may appeal more to small guilds – and pugs that roam more than zerg. might not appeal to the casual / pve’r as it’s more dangerous than roaming with a zerg – so it’s more pvp than pve.
as much as everyone likes to call big wvw zergs – strategic – it’s really more casual because you can join and be epic in like 1 minute – it’s a rush to have those massive fights. being in big crowds is fun.

I think this map might appeal MORE to the PvE types than to a WvW or PvP type. It seems structured more to small groups killing NPCs.
The other issue is that the map seems too big for an overflow map on anything other than T1. I guess we will see.
it really depends on it clicking with the pvp’rs – if for example the common wvw type perma invis thief build takes a liking to this map – you will see the wvw thread fill up with more “nerf the thief” posts lol – certain types of wvw roamers can make this map really hard for casual players. so far this looks like thief heaven heh!

Please give a PPT. Maybe a 100 PPT if your server conquer the whole map? So we have motive to play in that map

Stupid idea. PPT players can stay their own maps.

is this basically going to be one big map where defending areas equates to zergs camping out at the best knock off spots?
if so, let me know which profession has the coolest knockbacks because I think my ranger will be inadequate for these activities as well.
221 hours over 1,581 days of bank space/hot pve/lion’s arch afk and some wvw.
I watched the video recorded and was disappointed.
1- I don’t like so many narrow bridges between the islands. Some looked to have “railing” but none were demonstrated. I am worried about so many bottlenecks with the many knockbacks and pulls we have.
2- Please get a new pilot. I did not enjoy one person talking about the mechanics of what happens when we do something while only actually seeing them fight a mob over and over. You were in “Dev Mode”, one-shot the thing and get to showing us the actual point of killing it. If nothing was ready to be shown, make all the mobs friendly (I saw you toggling that as you went) and just run the map. Lastly, I got tired of hearing our pilot brag about how good they were at the game yet watch them do little damage and die (or rather teleport away just before death) so often. Although I did enjoy the part where rather than using the dev teleport, they tried to Waypoint and were shocked they were still in combat.
3- The map does look pretty. It’s too bad that it’ll be wasted when so many crank the settings to minimal to help deal with server lag. I’ll be sure to hang out until I’m in an abandoned Overflow so that I can give the map due justice in exploration.
All-in-all I’d say I’m intrigued to see how it actually plays, but what was given in this “preview” could have been done in a simple teaser video with standard flybys and the doom-n-gloom voice over.
(edited by Pennry.9215)
honestly, I think this map should be an individual server pve zone where pve players and those in wvw queue can earn points for their server. like I mentioned before in this thread, revamp the battle isles from gw1 or something and then toss this in when you’re done so it’s not a waste of coding time.
all this zone will do is fragment wvw players more, not resolve population imbalances and remind pve players why they don’t like pvp when they are spending half their night getting tossed off cliffs by organized zergs.

No thanks. Leave your zerging at home.
really bad engineer
This is pretty stupid and will serve no purpose other than waiting out a queue. If thats your intention then great. But putting PvE bosses in WvW does not appeal to the majority of players who actively play, and no PPT makes it pointless.. so you wouldn’t want your WvW’ers to be interested in it anyway. I’m sure PvE’ers will enjoy the mechanics of the fights(once or twice), to which you give them… WXP.
It’s completely counter-intuitive.
Sounds interesting and as always the Art Team did a fantastic job imo. The few concerns i have :
- Too many PvE Mobs. I understand that creatures make a world look alive and while i find the mechanics interesting from a pve perspective i think for an open pvp map it is a little too much
- Map joining. Please find a way to bring in people together, Squads, guilds etc. This would be absolutely awesome and make this map a real alternative to people who not want to play the ppt game.
- Classic WvW. I really have the concern that this map will compete with classic wvw and there might be the danger that it will hurt population on the normal maps.
Can´t wait until that get´s released, it´s a step in the right direction to fight queues imo.
Beautiful map. And finally an overflow.
What i wonder is why you don’t add a copy of it to the real scoring world as a 4th map. I’m thrilled that we’re getting a lovely looking map to explore and that we’ll have a non-scoring overflow to wait in, but… why isn’t there a single scoring version of it?
It’s like if borderlands were the only playing map and EB was an infinite non-scoring overflow.

ppt for overflow? lal… let more populated servers to win no matter what?
Just the WvW
R3200+
Like I said, sounds like you can join overflows, but this brings us back to the issue then of groups that are full and a 6th is looking to join on the group. Yes, he can get in, but it requires manual circumvention of a flawed queue system to get the player in. Just resolve the issue by giving two options for queue’ing: Join the next highest-population map with an available position, or join a specific, already existing EDGE map just like WvW and hot-join.
What they should do, i think, is to bring back the old GW1 system with districts where players were able to choose districts. Essentially it’s still the same in GW2, only instead of being called English District 1,2,3… they called Overflows and there’s no option to choose which Overflow you want to go in. Overflow 1,2,3 etc., would be very helpful in every area of GW2, not only this particular map.
ppt for overflow? lal… let more populated servers to win no matter what?
Not for overflow. For a 5th map, which would happen to be this one, and which one would have to queue for, just like the others. Doesn’t change anything to infinite copies of this map being used as non-scoring overflow.
Heck, if a 5th map really makes people that angry, just swap the Borderlands map with this one every other week.
Save the Bell Choir activity!
I think once A-net puts in the overflow maps they will make drastic changes to wvw. Something like less borderlands or reduce population caps for the silver and bronze leagues. Once the overflow maps happen they can do that. It will increase queues but with overflow maps wvw will not be as frustrated since they will be able to wvw instead of doing pve.

I agree. If you don’t want to take risks, you don’t get big rewards. Simple as that.
Make EXP harder to gain in this map.
Make rewards less in this map.
Don’t allow badge drops?
You need to incentivise people to click on that join button when it pops. I’m fearful that they won’t and populations will plummet

For some kind of overflow map this seems a little too extensive.
Too much to do, too big.
If it’s overflow it should be something simple yet sort of entertaining, so you can half sit there and pay attention some of the time. I feel like there will be people mastering and staying there.
This feels like I have to get to know things, how things work, just to be entertained to get into a game mode I actually want to play.
But I suppose with how long some queue’s have been reported… maybe we do need a ton of copies of a massive full queue map to keep the crowd entertained.

After the stream, here are some of my reflections / suggestions:
- Each overflow of the map should have a number
So ppl can find each other in the appropriate Channel in a vocal (because we have dedicated WvW vocal for the server).
- The edges of the mist should have the most achievements possible to make like:
kill the guard, capture the camps, capture the sentry, kill the supply caravans (replace by killing the generator?), capture the mercenary camps
Because, for example a player in a high density server playing only during prime time, besides not being able to play, will NEVER enter Eternal Battleground to accomplish certain achievements.
- The function “join this map” should be possible
What I mean is: when you are in a group in different overflow of the same map (like in PvE), you should be able to join your mates by right clicking on their names and “join their map”
So friends, guild mates can easily gather.
or join the specific number of the overflow (choose in a list?)
- The opponents should not represent the actual match up
As soon as the limit of players per map is reached, this server creates a new overflow against any other server that reaches his population limit.
So they will rarely be an imbalance, or a server alone in a overflow. (or way less)
I hope my guild will be selected for testing
++
I’m really looking forward to that map. things can only get better.
- possible getaway from the skill lags caused by… some blob servers
- chance of finding a place to fight small groups who also give a kitten for server rankings
- … and being left in peace by zergs while fighting these small groups
- mechanics to give smaller groups a chance against bigger groups (bridges) to make combat fairer also in the cases of unequal population (so ppl actually fight more and run or chase less)
the players who like zerging and chasing and sieging and getting server points and event farming hopefully will feel like staying on the many other maps which are actually designed for them.

It would be cool if :
- We could face any server in our region.
- Low populated server could join in the same team, otherwise it will be just a boring pve map for more populated servers.
- It should give less Wxp compared to Borderlands and Eternal battleground.
- Mobs should not give Wxp.
- Give better achievements compared to Borderlands and Eternal battleground, so pvers will not screw the machup.
- Make it impossible to farm, if people like to farm they should go to pve.
- It should be possible to choose whichever overflow in order to joind the guild mates/friends ( like GW1 maps )
- Too many mobs, lower the number
- Give some sort of penality when defeated, like -10% HP for 5 mins.
People seems to miss a rather major part of what this map is about.
It is a place where they can test new stuff to implement in the current WvW-maps, without doing massive damage to said WvW-maps due to lack of large-scale testing.

I have high hopes for this map…
But….I am missing the goal/purpose of this map, except maybe another zerg champfarming map with some pvp added.
Don’t get me wrong, the layout/environemental mechanics are interesting. but the purpose/goal anything totally passes me by.
Can anyone explain what the purpose on this map is?
And where are my Siegeturtles!!!!!!

Being able to test new possible things for WvW without putting them on the “real” maps is not a good enough purpose?

Yes it is..
I was just questioning because i took a look and saw a larger ruins map with capture points and champions and it reminded me of the living story (zerging champs)/skyhammer and the standard conquest.
Only thing that seems new to me is the bridge mechanic.
I guess we shall have to wait and see..

The only thing all those bottle necks will do is create areas where either side blobs and pew pews each other from range.
Is it possible to join someone else you know in another instance of the overflow map?
Like I am in overflow #1 and my friend is in overflow #2 can I join his party and then join overflow #2? Like it is now also in PVE zones?
Quite disapointing this. Meh.
Well it will be kind of lack buster if only same match-up players can go same over flow. This could work if all players would stack in three servers, but then random match-ups would ruin whole thing.
