Awsome guide. Will make sure to follow it.
And, be sure to kill the veteran wolf whenever it’s up. It does give WXP.
Hmm you just said how to NOT get wxp. Your guide was supposed to explain how to get wxp =(
Oh and the giant grub and spirit tree boss give 225 WXP. Worth doing with a whole zerg of 80 peoples!
Devon has said that they are going to look at improving the system to give wxp for defensive actions, so hopefully soon this guide will we obsolete.

lol so very true….and sad. What is surprising is a few of the Anet staff say they are from Daoc. If so they would remember Daoc had the same problems with WvW XP. They made adjustments so you did get good XP from healing etc. They even worked on a system to spread the XP out when killing someone. You got much more XP when you killed someone solo as compared to being part of a 10v1 kill.
Pretty good but it started to lose some steam towards the end. Killing downed people does give WXP, so I don’t understand why you included that. Buffing allies makes you more likely to kill and avoid being killed, so it helps you get WXP too. I’ve also gotten rewards for upgrading towers before—I don’t know why you don’t get them ALL the time, but I’ve seen it happen.
Nitpickery aside, WXP rewards do need to be reassessed. There is far too much emphasis on kills and not nearly enough on anything else. Killing three people can get you more WXP than taking a tower (assuming they’re all above +50) which is insane. That said, they have to be careful not to give out WXP for basically standing still: scouting towers may be necessary, but if they make it so you can get WXP while afk, I think we’d quickly find that adding rewards for scouting towers would not have the desired effect.
For my part, I think what they ought to do is scale back the WXP gain from kills just a bit, and increase the rewards for capture and defense events. Re-introduce rewards for escorting yaks, but make the reward system for it more selective (e.g. you can’t just afk at a tower portal and pick up points as the yaks walk in). It might also be a good idea to award WXP for revives, and possibly even at increments when players heal for X amount within Y window.

I didn’t write it from start to finish like that, I just wrote all the points and the I copy/pasted them a bit all over depending on how much text it was and the layout looked, hehe.
Killing downed people does give WXP, so I don’t understand why you included that.
Unless I am very much mistaken, it’s not the act of killing that gives WXP, it’s the fact that you hit them earlier. If you don’t hit someone at all but only kill them when they are downed by other players, you don’t get WXP.
.
Anyway, glad to see that most people understand that this guide serves as a sad reminder of how WXP works and that I disagree that all these things don’t give WXP.

made me lol, so true.

I see what you’re saying, I just came at it differently I guess. Obviously just tagging someone won’t get you WXP if they are rezzed. Unlike most other things on the list, actually killing a downed player does give you WXP, so that’s why it kind of stuck out to me. I think most people do actually focus on downed enemies to ensure that they get WXP.
The WXP system makes having a high rank the equivalent of an up arrow.
Don’t place superior siege, everyone loves using it for the epic WXP and lootbags but placing it gives 0 WXP, let other people do it.
Great post. I knew I was doing something wrong :-)

I see it more as a ‘I don’t help other’ kinda arrow. It gives me great joy to kill these people!
Upleveled don’t give me joy: I always got to think that this are people that take their first steps into WWW, too poor to buy decent gear, trying things out. And then BOOM, they got killed! Poor children!

wrong you want to place the siege so when enemy zerg arrieve you get priority to use it. building it well its time dependent. you dont want to spend time to pre siege but last minute siege is best for you
“Don’t play WvW, it gives 0 WXP. Let others do it for you”
^ Pretty much what I was thinking while reading the OP, lol.
I think the OP’s aim is to point out either
1) how players have ruined WvW with the “get xp” mind
2) how ways to get Wxp are flawed and could be improved
Was fun to read though :P
You forgot one: Don’t run outside of the zerg!
Does anyone care about wxp? Sure its nice as a bonus, but its hadly ame changing enough to chase it.
Precise guide. It really covers everything.
Wow, thanks for this guide! I’ve apparently been playing WvW wrong for months!
What about trebbing? Should I stop doing that too? Also I’m an ele, swirling winds hasn’t been giving me much wxp lately, should I switch to dagger off hand instead?
Thanks for the help!

Extremely disappointing addition to the game in that they could have done so much more with the system. I understand they don’t want to add anything game changing (like a TOA expansion), but the changes they did make were kitten and completely insignificant. The only differences I see from before the change is now people are more likely to hit the pve content (grub, wurm, warg) than they were before.
Bring 30 people. Make sure Thor is with you.
Kill sentry, flip camp, kill dolyak.
Run into SBI zerg. Wipe SBI. Laugh at Thor.
Run into CD zerg. Wipe CD. Laugh at Thor.
10 ranks in 1 day.
Now many make fun of this and that’s ok. But I’d like to add some reality check to it.
Before the WXP-farming patch …
- Upgrading
- Escorting
- Siege building
- Repairing
… was neither rewarding nor appreciated. After the patch it’s became even worse.
The mentality of people changed and became all about how to get wxp the fastest and easiest way. So that makes me wonder.
• Why should I stay behind repairing a broken fortified wall, by myself, for no reward, when the horde runs of and wxp farms?
• Why should I escort that dolly all the way from the camp to the keep/tower, by myself, for no reward, when only killing the enemy dolly gives wxp?
• Why should I spend my gold and time upgrading (that if all goes well takes approx. around 7 hours) ensuring supply gets in, when 95% of everyone on that map thinks “We will just retake it and get wxp for the cap”.
I play a lot, many hours a day and I’m always in wvwvw. My play style is very defensive and behind the scene work. I belong to that little group of players who runs back and forth between a camp and broken wall/door, the group who upgrades and defend camps, the group who escorts dollies from start to end and the group who has the map open most of the time to check so nothing contested goes by unnoticed.
When I heard we would be able to buy ranks in different aspects of our playing style I got extremely happy. Finally I’d get something for all that work repairing and building. Because, naive as I was I thought the point system would be based on how we play. I would i.e. be able to carry more supply then those who never spends even a minute repairing or maybe a reduction in siege cost considering I build about 20-40 siege a day. But no …
Of course being able to carry +5 more supply will take a person with my gaming style tripple the time to get compared to someone who does nothing but runs in the blob. I mean .. that’s logic, is it not?
I am starting to think that I’m stupid all way around. What an idiot I am. Why the hell am I doing a work that’s not considered worth rewarding from the company itself nor is it appreciated or respected by players either. What a nutshell I am!
Yea, I’m bitter, but after 8 months how can I be anything but when wvwvw is all about killing, destroying and egocentric gameplay.
tl;dr – Anet rewards blobs, 95% of players are lemmings and I’m an idiot.
(edited by Zajo.5946)
sad but true. As twisted as it might be, I love to run my Elementalist with a nearly full-support build in WvWvW to help my team, and absolutely nothing of what I do (cc, ress, constant healing ecc) rewards me in any way.
I continue to do it just for some kind of server-pride, but I acknowledge a very poor design choice. Hope things will get better and supporting teammates will give proper reward…
Awesome guide, +1
Oh no, but WXP means so much in this game…
Edit it to show 2 steps.
Step 1: Zerg (Prefer Zerg on Eternal BG)
Step 2: While zerging: (your list)
-Do not xxx it gives no wxp.
-Do not xxy it gives no wxp.
Implement those changes and i feel your guide will be complete!

While I find this post funny, I think it’s a bit cheap after Anet already have said they’re working on it in this post over here: https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/pvp/wuvwuv/WvW-players-who-run-supply-for-repairs/first#post1839964

No, they still deserve it.
WvW has been third class since launch. We are somewhere behind PvE and sPvP in importance and it shows by both the lack of new content and the failure to properly design and implement what new systems they have added.
Sitting down to think of what things should generate WXP could probably be accomplished by one experienced player in 5 minutes. Adding those lines to the code would surely take less than a day. It didn’t happen because WvW has not been seen as important. They gave us a quickie because they’re too busy developing the next piece of one-off PvE content that will take 3 months to develop and everyone will be bored of after 3 weeks.
Meanwhile the 3rd class citizens of WvW are sitting in queues because what little they bothered to make for us is so popular that even tier 5 has queues.
Pretty good but it started to lose some steam towards the end. Killing downed people does give WXP, so I don’t understand why you included that. People stay in zergs, and zergs reform after a wipes. It’s the same people over a period of time, and they don’t yield much WXP after you’ve wiped them two or three times.
Size of zerg (and that of opposing forces) mattered as well. 30 on 30, 10 gets away, 5 of the 20 died you couldn’t tag, and say on average they yielded 30 pts (only on the first one or two zvz fights would you get that much wxp), that’s only 450 pts. which is what, 2 towers + 2 camps? 4 camps + 4 sentries?
If you were on BL maps, 75 each vet kill, 75 each mercenary camp flip, doesn’t even take all that.
Big zergs have big zerg problems. 80 on 80 zvz how many of them are you going to tag? How many of those were “fresh” and worth tagging? Then there’s the chance they had better class composition and ended up wiping your zerg, or you had to run and none of them ended up dying…
Capping yield far higher wxp than killing. It’s consistent, it’s never diminished, and it’s predictable. Gates or guards aren’t even threats (Ok, those that get downed by guild claiming aren’t people), 2 towers 3 camps every tick, that’s 3150/h without killing a single soul, or sentry, or yak…
So, is the reward for killing really too high?
From a soloer perspective then. How about the bunker guard that took you 3 minutes to solo had potential to yield you anywhere between 0 and 20 wxp?

erm, why is WXP so important? Is this another outlet, besides legendaries, for those spending their lives in grief?

not sure. Its not exactly game breaking.
Ok carrying more supplies, if a large group of players have it could be useful, but otherwise the benefits of ranking up are mediocre at best (which is how it should be, lets not introduce a power rank system into wvwvw please).
Excellent guide, it has most definitely informed me how best to raise my rank that is so very indicative of how good/useful I am!

tl;dr Just run with a big WxP train. The bigger, the better for your WxP progression.
Remember, just RUN with them.
Do nothing else, except pressing 1 & 6 during battles and stopping when the WxP train stops for capping stuffs inside that circle~
Note: If the WxP trains in your server don’t satisfy you enough, or if your server doesn’t have big WxP trains, feel free to transfer to another server that has better and bigger WxP trains.

And, be sure to kill the veteran wolf whenever it’s up. It does give WXP.
Close, but you risk missing out on wXP with the zerg while you kill the wolf – what you really do is TAG the wolf instead of killing it and then stay with the zerg. Later, when someone else has killled the wolf you’ll get credit for the kill.
This applies to every gate you run past on your way to the zerg. Tag the gate, wXP delivered later.
Please make some more guides like this, they are very helpful.
Lol I see what that list is suggesting! Very clever!

There is one cavet.
Place a superior arrow cart in a defensive situation, but don’t build it.
This way you can force anyone using it to give it to you so you can have all the wxp from a zergwipe.

Don’t kill downed people, killing gives 0 WXP. Let other people do it.

At first i was confused a bit too. But her/his point is that you only have to tag an enemy to get the WXP; it doesn’t matter who finishes him off in the end.
Thank you for the guide. I always try to stay alive as long as possible and to damage to as many different people as possible(use AoE, run away if they focus on you and let others die first).
Also if there are not enough people(I’m on a server not 24/7 enough people to make big zergs and for enemies it is the same) I just try to kill some dolyaks or stuff until there are some people trying to get towers, keeps or other stuff(giving more WXP).
And every time I kill someDolyak guarded by its guards I think its funny because the guards are that weak… not even good enough to buy some time.
Heh, I don’t even look at my WXP progress when I’m playing. Every few days I remember to have a look at it.
Its just not that important.
