Long time player here, been around since GW1, betas and release of GW2.

Played GW2 for a month on release, including WvW and even had a team of friends on TS but we really didn’t know what we were doing. In our experience, WvW was the worst part and disappointment of a already mediocre mmo game, everything felt really unfinished and in a bad state at the time. Was playing Guardian, felt completely useless. It was either zerg down something in a lag fest or get zerged down. Staff was the only weapon I could tickle my opponents with before I got mowed down, forget melee. Overall just horrible and completely pointless zerging.

I quit.

Back after a year, joined a PvX guild of sorts that also did a lot of WvW but they were on a different server, and every time they went to do WvW I felt left out. And it’s not like the server was the problem, I wasn’t even interested in trying anyway, I just thought WvW sucked. So lots of other members got “promoted” in ranks after some time, and for being in a guild for a very long time there were newer players favored and promoted higher than me because they were part of that WvW club, and I hated this so much I left the guild after realizing this and my resentment towards WvW grew even stronger, so I went back to doing my dungeon speed clears, and without being able to find a guild to fit me this eventually depressed me enough to stop playing.

I quit again.

Got back recently again but I’m still soloing like before, and this isn’t really going anywhere. I would also like to get some more AP and there’s probably lots of easy AP to get in WvW after you exhaust pve and pvp APs but I just don’t know.

So should I bother with trying WvW again and what to do? Why is it good and what’s the point? Classes I can play are Mesmer (main, prefered), Revenant, Guardian, Ele and Thief, but I’m still working on specs for them, only got Chronomancer mastered so far.

My friend that was completely new to the game started playing WvW as his ranger main out of whim and got lucky by “finding” a random group of people that invited him to guild and TS and it was all very organised and cool and they started doing their daily raids after that but I didn’t want to hear a thing about it, I just didn’t believe that it’s fun. He’s not playing anymore tough.

I want to give this a try but I don’t want to do it alone, I really don’t know what to do or what’s the point. It’s scary, and I’m not very motivated for it (those dungeons won’t clear themselves you know).. But I’m interested.

Is there a friendly person out there that can give me some guidance?

edit: posted this in general. I didn’t even know there was a WvW subforum, but maybe here is better?

Your WvW experience is tied to the server you are on and the timezone you play in. So what you need to do is find a WvW guild from your server, preferably one with a decent presence in your timezone. This was a lot easier before megaservers, but now it’s only reliably doable in one of these ways:
1. go to wvw maps (not EotM), preferably EB, and say in map chat you are looking for a wvw guild for X timezone. This seems the easiest and most straightforward way to do it. It might take a while and there are guilds who give trials first.
2. there is a section on this forum for recruitment, you can make a thread there saying basically the same thing, but remember to add your server.
3. you can search on google to see if your server’s community has a website, most usually do and there you can find guilds recruiting much easier.

Joining PvX guilds that have what you need is not as easy since they tend to have players from many different servers, so it’s better to find a WvW-oriented guild that asks for rep only in WvW and join them. Since you can be a part of 5 guilds at the same time and guild chat is always displayed for all of them, you can easily be in a WvW guild and a PvE guild at the same time or w/e. Just be sure their representation policy is alright, but most WvW guilds only ask for rep in WvW; make sure you explain this to all your guilds that require rep so that there aren’t conflicts.

It may be that your server is not very active in WvW, in which case you can consider a server transfer. I would wait a while before I transferred, though, since WvW is undergoing a period of changes right now and nobody knows what it will become, and server statuses may change somehow – nothing is really certain at this moment.

GLHF!

P.S.: Yes, this would have been better placed in the WvW forum, perhaps a mod might move it for you.

I recommend you watch some wvw battle videos at youtube. Search “gw 2 wvw raid” and see how the battles are. If that doesn’t look fun to you then I recommend that you wont go wvw.

If you are still interested then you should get a wvw build for your character (tanky build with some team support if possible, metabattle.com gives good direction) and then you should look for a friendly wvw guild in your server. Logging into Eternal Battleground and asking for one is a good start.

Thanks, so you say EB. Not really interested in watching some random videos, I have seen them before and it was the same I saw in my early WvW days, just chaos of a zerg fest.

Any pointers what should I be doing as a lone player once I log on to EB? What’s the point of WvW anyway (I don’t get it)? Profit, loot, pvp..? For me it just looks like miles of empty space to run around for no reason and some random zerg fights happening here and there; in short – complete chaos.

When I played Lineage 2 way back in the days, objective raiding castle was simple: there was a guild owning that castle that was defending it, and several guilds could sign up to attack and take it on the weekends, however those could work together or against eachother to compete on who will take it, the objectives were clear and it was quite fun really.

But in WvW, I have no idea what should we be doing, who’s owner of what castles and what do I matter as a lone player in this zerg fest, why bother fighting for nothing?
Or should you be doing something else? I heared something about “pveing in WvW” what is that about? What are other maps about and what makes EB special? A friend showed me a place in Obsidian Sanctum once to farm some Ori ore but then we came across like a place that looked like a pvp arena and got murdered by some other players and told that noobs should stay out of this place. (?!?)

I think my server is Piken Square and I’m EU central timezone, in case anyone reading is on the same server and would be willing to take a tour, I’d gladly come along!

Piken Square is a good server to be on, its fairly active all round.

EB
SMC – Stone Mist Castle, is the main objective.
You want the towers and keeps for your team – as they are what generate points every 15/20 mins (PPT – points per tick)

Borders
Garrison – again, main objective that is owned and claimed by the enemy server – you want that for your server to make more points, the towers provide more of a strategic option for you.

I would suggest joining SCS (piken scout squad) as they are a pretty friendly guild and dont seem to require 100% rep – i had a nice time in that guild, they will be more than happy to show you the ropes.

What looks like chaos is actually … not as chaotic as it looks. Find a guild video that hopefully has comms routed into the mix so you can hear what the commander is saying. Once you get a sense of how things flow and how a ZvZ fight actually goes you will have a lot more fun. Of course, the only way for this to happen is to PLAY.

The most fun fights for me aren’t blob vs blob (which is how a lot of T1 fights go), it’s in the 10v10 – 20v20 range.

As I said, we had no idea what we were doing, was just winging it basically. And even today I’m not sure what I would do if ran into a mob of enemies that can’t wait to lynch you down just because you crossed their path. And if I go as solo mesmer, not sure what I would be looking to be doing in this game mode just by myself.

SkyShroud.2865:

What is there not to understand about PvX? It’s both pve and pvp guild, which most guilds are. But this one was more WvW than the rest. And on the wrong server. They never mention that when recruiting.

I asked because I see it’s still a popular game mode and some people seem to enjoy it, but I have bad memories of it and don’t have the motivation to start and try it; I still prefer doing my daily pve routines and some spvp but I really feel like I might be missing out on something good, it’s probably just the wrong way I’m looking at WvW so I’m hoping to find some encouragement here.

If you keep it at a small-ish scale it’s enjoyable. The mechanics are pretty interesting and you have plenty to do, regardless of your group size. The thing that drags WvW down the most are the class skills – it’s basically an AOE spam fest. Having a 100 red circles on the ground isn’t fun/strategic/meaningful in any way.

Get past that or get into small zergs or roaming – you’ll find that you have more impact and what you do will be more meaningful. Or try ESO – they fix most of the problems stated here and replace them with others.

A lot of the time it’s the thrill of the fight or the payoff of defending your Towers and Keeps that people play for but you can rank up and have a chance to get Ascended weapons and armour as you do so. Also, now we have an sPvP-style reward track system that you can work towards getting skins of various kinds as you play.

They recently released the armor reward tracks, which you can work towards. The armor appearance is completely based on your own preferences though. Rank ups also give you loot – but there’s been a general agreement over time that most of it isn’t that great. But you can buy a variety of things with badges, so there’s that. Also, the hero proofs can get you specializations if you don’t have them already.

Generally speaking, rewards in wvw tend to be linked solely to wvw – points to spend in track abilities. There’s also a bunch of wvw achievements but I mean… most of them are pretty large-scale even after the nerf.

Also something that should be mentioned – you can play it however you like. I’m not sure how PS is or their matchup, but in ours we can find fights in a variety of sizes from solo to blobs. Or you could not fight at all, and just run yaks / defend ect.

Much like you I’ve been playing GW2 for quite a while now (on and off) but only recently decided to properly try WvW for the first time (like a month or so ago).

I’m on Piken Square which, as others have said, I’ve found to be a good community to play with.

Some things I did, which I’d recommend trying since they worked well for me in terms of getting to grips with things:

1) Join a guild called [PS] Stomp for Piken
https://piken.eu/index.php?/gc/4-stomp-for-piken/

I was invited by Dogg one night after joining open raids for a while – he’s a nice guy, and there’s a whole bunch of good-natured folk playing there.

There are so many people on Piken who are in PS as well as their dedicated WvW guilds that it’s a good place to stay in touch with what’s happening.

There’s no rep requirement and the guild chat is pretty much used a place for the general WvW community to hang out and for telegraphing server-wide updates about map status for those who’re interested.

2) Just find a map with a blue tag on and join the squad (blue tags are generally open raids, yellow being guild raids – sometimes open, often closed). You can now simply do this on your map screen from anywhere by left clicking on the commander tag and selecting join squad.

3) Get on the Piken TS server – ts.piken.eu – (this is pretty essential if you want to get the most from your time in WvW). Find the channel for your selected map, and you should be able to see the commander you’ve joined tagged up in the channel and all the other squad members in there.

FYI, you can also see a whole bunch of Piken guild channels on the TS server, which will give you some idea of the many guilds who you might consider approaching if you want to join a WvW guild. You can also find a list of Piken Guilds on the Piken Square website, headed by [PS], here: https://piken.eu/index.php?/gc/

4) Then, just roll with your commander and begin soaking up the rhythms, geography and language of the WvW environment; it takes a bit of getting used to, for sure, and was bewildering for me to begin with, but after a while things start becoming familiar and even second-nature (even for a noob like me).

After a while of playing like this you will no doubt have experienced a range of blue-tag commanders and met a bunch of friendly, helpful people. Just as a pointer for commanders to look out for, off the top of my head and in no particular order, I have enjoyed playing with blue-tag commanders like: ljd (Evilxzephyr), Crobena, Dogg (Guard Dog) and Dudu among many others, all of whom have been welcoming open-raid commanders.

You might also have encountered some of the smaller, WvW-focussed guilds and you can perhaps begin to approach individual yellow-tag commanders to ask if their raid is open and if you could hang out with them a bit. Some will say no, some might say yes.

You should definitely let them know your level of experience and ability. I’ve come across several commanders (both blue and yellow), and many other players, who have been very patient, friendly and supportive when they knew I’d only been playing WvW for a short time. You can expect, probably, a high amount of personal fail to begin with (certainly if you’re anything like me), and people will tolerate this (even laugh with you about it) and offer plenty of guidance when they understand your inexperience; or so I’ve found.

As for class?

Again, like you, I tried my guardian to begin with, and I completely sucked… I mean, completely. It was disheartening.

For some reason I then decided to take my thief into WvW. You should also understand that I had completely neglected my thief for months, really since the major trait changes (whenever that was, ages ago now). Quite why I made this reckless decision I don’t know, but I did some research and decided to try and get to know my thief again, in the context of WvW.

There are probably many other routes into WvW with other classes that people would recommend, or which you might prefer, but I can tell you that I have had a blast getting to grips with WvW on my thief, and I’ve fallen in love with him all over again.

However, I say that with the following caveat: I know that as a thief in WvW I am not really bringing any great utility to my squad compared with most other classes.

But, the flip side of this is that nobody really expects much of me, which has really taken the pressure off big-time as I learn how WvW works.

People tend to expect a lot from certain other classes, be they melee or ranged, particularly things like guardian, warrior, ele, necro, mesmer, revenant, etc. In fact, I think thief probably sits there almost as an oddball class to choose for zerg-based WvW, some people might say a wasted slot, or a selfish slot or whatever (not that anyone has ever given me any grief for choosing to play as a thief). But, as an inexperienced WvW-er playing thief you’re unlikely to ‘let anybody down’ with failing to deliver a vital utility at a critical moment. So the pressure is largely off.

Also, since you don’t really sit squarely in either the melee or ranged parts of the squad, you’re kind of left free to move how you like. It’s a pretty liberating way to learn the rhythms, ebbs and flows of a zerg fight. Since I’m still a pretty rubbish player, I play my own mini-game which is all about staying alive – you have really great mobility with your shortbow and closing/evading skills, so it’s great fun trying to whizz around the battle, doing your best contribute and trying just to stay alive.

The short version of my own setup is: vanilla thief (I haven’t had HoT for very long); traited at the moment Trickery (2-3-1), Acro (3-2-3), Crit Strikes (1-2-1); pretty much full marauder, shortbow + D/P.

Bearing in mind that I am actually pretty terrible at PvP, I spend the majority of my time on shortbow, skirmishing between the back and front lines, just surfing along the edge of the action.

SB #2 (cluster bomb) you can pretty much spam to blast everyone’s fields and use as a deterrent along your zerg’s flanks, 1-1-1-ing to keep pressure, #4 (poison) helps prevent enemy resses, and #5 obviously gets you out of (and sometimes inadvertently into) trouble. If the enemy start downing, you can switch to D/P and take a more direct role cleaning up; but beware target-fixation… this gets me in trouble time and again – when will I learn?

Like I said, I know I’m not bringing a lot to my team as a thief, but when I get in a rhythm with things I feel that I do contribute enough to justify my spot, and most importantly I have fun.

Other than that, my second job is rallybot – but, in all seriousness, nobody has ever given me a hard time about that since I started playing WvW; I don’t know if I’ve just been very lucky, or whether Piken simply has a good community (I think the latter).

Anyway, hope that’s been of some use to you.

Best,

~TG

Anet has added some nice, pvp style reward tracks to the characters for wvw. Makes wvw much more rewarding than it used to be. Am not sure if you need the HoT expansion to access these reward tracks. (I already have HoT, so no idea if they exist for a non-HoT account)

Also realize, the armor/builds in one mode, don’t necessarily translate perfectly into another mode.

I.e. a full zerk glass pvp build might work quite well, with good enough sustain, in pvp. Take that exact setup into wvw, even if you’re purely roaming, might not be so great.
But then again, maybe it could be, some of my builds in wvw I run even glassier than pvp, and do quite well with it. While other builds and classes, I run quite a bit tankier.

It is important to understand why you play games. “Fun” is too vague. People play games for different reasons. Some play game because they are bored, to pass time, lonely, to dominate, to feed ego or etc…..

For myself, it is because games allow you to do things you can’t in real life. Exactly because of that, I play a wide range of games from RTS to city building to sim to fps to moba to mmorpg to sandbox building to survival to horror to rpg etc. In other words, I am literally a gamer who just like to game.

The thing is you don’t find it fun and you asking why it can be fun or how it can be fun, it suggest that the reason you play game is different from mine. For me, why is WvW fun? Simply because you can do things you can’t in real life. For others, it might be because of the excitement, the ego, the greater degree of interaction, the competition, play against people, etc. The reason why it is fun usually is simple reason and subjective to each individual.

There’s a couple things you need to get down first.

1. Pick the class and spec you want to play, you said mesmer is preferred, they do well in almost every situation. Classes do have defined roles in groups, guardians are not useless they are one of the more needed classes, but you will most likely need a guild in order to get that to shine, as pug zergs are usually bring whatever you want. Check http://metabattle.com/wiki/MetaBattle_Wiki to get started on popular specs and then build from there.

2. Find the role you want to play in wvw. By the sounds of it you don’t want to play in a blob or a zerg, you may want to do small group which go from scouter/defender, roamer, to duo, to havoc groups. You can usually find more of those in the borderlands.

3. Find your server Teamspeak and join them, get verified in map chat and hang out in the public sections and hear what’s going on with your server. Join your friends guild and run with them for a bit and see if you like it, the hardest step is joining a new guild and trying to get involved, but with your friend already there it should be easier.

If you just want to do wvw for achievements then you will need to run with a zerg to capture objectives which make up a lot of achievements in there. Eotm is probably faster this way as it’s mostly a k-train running around the map taking stuff with the odd fight in between.

Finally, just relax, don’t take wvw too seriously, Running with a zerg is not that bad, you get to capture stuff, you get to kill groups, you get to learn the map in safety. Run through your own structures and check out the siege placements, look at what can be used to counter enemies, wvw is more than just running around in a zerg hitting 1.

Attacking and defending structures, sieging and countersieging, roamers cutting off reinforcements, scouts calling for enemy positions so ambushes can happen, or defenses can be mounted, flipping camps so supply can keep flowing to upgrade structures or even killing enemy yaks to stall their upgrades, tapping enemy structures to block their waypoint, on and on. Even zerg guilds do organized guild vs guild fights if you want to get more serious about fighting.

There are many things to do in wvw, you just have to find the ones you want to do. My current guild started from friends who wandered into wvw during a tournament, they liked scouting and defending, which led to the creation of a guild for just that, it evolved into more offense with havoc in enemy lands to take their t3 structures with a handful of people. Before that I got invited into a big zerg guild with a popular pug commander who was randomly inviting players, which led me to finding my current friends and guild. Contact has to start somewhere, you just need to get into wvw and give it a chance to happen.

Another derailing post. ^^

I find WvW to be the most varied and fun game mode.

“Soloing” things is much more dangerous with the combined populations so I recommend getting behind a good pugmander and running with the zerg.

Or if you can get 4-5 friends together run your own havoc group for defending or back capping.

As mentioned above, your build is critical in WvW. Builds are different for zerging, dps, roaming, support, scouting, heavy melee etc… People typically need to be a lot more tanky than they think in WvW, and with the recent changes, melee and tanking have definitely made a comeback.

It’s not that hard to find your role based on your class and build. Once you start filling that role you were made for, you will enjoy being successful defeating your enemies.

Edit: If you really want to have fun.

1) gather as many people as you can
2) Make rangers
3) get longbows
4) get bears
5) WINNING!
