I’ve been playing WvW for about a month or so, and the other night I came on two players fighting and jumped in. The FA player /say to me that he was in a duel, but frankly by then it was too late. Never had someone say that to me in the moment before, but as I’ve been reading this forum more I see lots of people seem to seek out pure 1v1 matchups. Now I wonder if I am often unwittingly being a kitten and PO my own team by interrupting duels.

There’s no perfect answer here, but what’s best etiquette? Assume every 1v1 I come across is a duel and doesn’t want help? Assume it does? Not talking about “fight club” behind the windmill, talking about coming across 1v1 (or 2v1 or any small fight for that matter) in the rest of the world. Thanks

Well you could ask them to just quickly type a single letter if they want you to help. Voice chat makes it easier.

If I come across 2 people fighting I will leave them be, sometimes I just stand and watch to make sure no one jumps in (I have had some good 2v2 ‘s this way) and to see how they play, but it is WvW so you do what ever you feel like, personally that is the rule I run by, but if I’m in a 1v1 I also don’t stomp people if I win (unless they have jumped me while taking a camp etc.) that’s just how I play it doesn’t mean I expect people to treat me the same way.

I think the general rule is if you come upon someone and they don’t attack, stop, and bow, that is usually a sign they want to duel. There is a pause typically before the attack.

However, on the other hand if you happen upon someone and they just attack, well, that is a “red is dead” mind set (which is perfectly legit) and it is game on. Regardless of which direction they run if almost dead, friends help, etc. WvW is supposed to offer a dynamic of play if you will. 3 servers but who says they have to be equally at war? Alliances are built, destroyed, has are small groups of people doing duels or other such things.

Some of the people I follow or have friended are on other servers after meeting them on the fields of WvW. Jump puzzle, duels, or all around generic questions. But for me, when I see a bow it is typically a sign of a requested engagement. If I am not interested I decline by ignoring it or party up and say why.

Oh the number of times I tried to save one of my team mates when he was in a duel >.>

But if you pay attention, you can easily see if they are dueling or if you need to help :
-if you see emotes (bow) it’s a duel
-if one of them is chasing the other around, it’s not a duel because players in duel accept that they are going to die and don’t try to run away and take cover.
-also, but this is getting more rare, the winner doesn’t finish the loser, he just goes away.

I watch the duel and wait to see if one goes down (mainly my servers guy) if they are attempting to stomp I will intervene and stop the stomp and proceed to ROFLstomp the other guy. (if it was my guy I will let him get stomped next time)

I’ll always intervene. It only makes sense that way. If my teammate is in a duel, he needs to say it fast enough before I stomp the downed person.

Red is dead, imo. However, if they say something to you and you feel it is necessary to let them continue the duel, you can always just not stomp. The other guy can then rez up and they can fight again in 30 secs or so… Anyone that gives you a hard time for killing an enemy on a wvw map, remind them how to get to sPvP.

It’s your own personal choice, but if you do not want your duels ruined, stay off the kitten road and away from objectives.

I’ll usually just leave 1v1s alone when in doubt.

If you see someone in a 1v1 fight, you should always help your teammates. If they call you out for interrupting, well tough kitties. they should have joined one of the 100s of empty spvp servers. I always expect my teammates to help me in a fight.

I will use /say and ask “duel?”

If they are duelling they will quickly type at least Y (for yes).

I also don’t charge in right away when I see only two players fighting. My guy on my team shouldn’t need my help He should be able to stake them. I’ll often wait and watch the fight, and if my guy goes down, and dies, I’ll jump in, stake the enemy, then rez my guy.

More than two players? I jump in.

people who want to duel and test their skills dont want help and will try to steer clear of the servermate from what I have noticed and what I have done.
I also see people will bring the fight closer to me when they want me to help them because they got overwhelmed.

If you see 2 people and no one else just standing around, you can always ask your teammate to run toward you if he needs help. I have had experiences where just not immediately attacking someone can lead to fun adventures (like one time I came acroos an opponent trying to take the other server’s camp and losing to the guards, so I helped him take the camp for his side but they were losing so much it didn’t matter). Also, the towers at the southern portion of the BL’s is a typical unofficial place for dueling.

For me , if I’m in a duel, I usually just stop and let the person I’m dueling take out the person in my server because they’re not built for it and I can reset the fight, bu that’s just me lol, I guess it’s kinda wrong that I let someone on my own server die, but on a t1 server, it’s hard to find other people that wants a good 1 vs 1 sometimes

its too hard to tell the difference between a roaming ganker and 2 random ppl involved in a dual. just kill the the enemy and move on. if they complain you helped them, remind them to take it to the southern supply camp area next time. it also helps if you know the dualists on your server. you can find out who they are by asking around in lionsarch or just reading these forums.

Go for it. if it’s a 1v1, the person on your side will back off, and you know to stop. If it isn’t, the person will continue, and you can continue on your merry murdering way.

They usually do it behind the windmill in the south camp.

I don’t. In fact I’ll usually shoo off others who come along and mistake the 1v1 for something else I like watching two skilled players fight, maybe I can learn something and improve myself … And maybe I’ll even get a duel myself.

That happened last night actually. This tough Kodash ele caught me off guard and staked me. He ran down the road and got caught by two of our guys. Someone rezzed me while he was fighting the two, and I /sat nearby until it was over and watched. I grouped up with him and we both ran down to the windmill and had this epic 10+ minute fight. It was awesome, even though the fight wound up ending in a draw.

I know for a lot of players duelling is about ego. For me it’s about learning and improving. Which often translates in bigger battles later.

If I come across people 1v1ing I check to make sure the person on my server isnt getting facerolled. If they arent I leave them be and watch, if they are then I usually jump in.

WvW is an open map though so unless you are deliberately going to the windmind and ruining people dual on purpose, dont let anyone make you feel too bad about join in a fight.

if it’s anywhere close to an objective, go ahead and jump in. if it’s somewhere remote, leave them be.

Don’t stomp the other person and it is fine. Let your teammate decide if it was a duel. If they want to duel that badly they can wait for the other person to get back up. Don’t ever let someone make you feel like kitten because they were dueling. Its wvw, they will get used to it eventually.

That being said if it is at a common dueling spot like the windmill you better not jump in. If you do so you are an kitten(unless you didn’t know about the windmill).

Duels are great and I’m a full supporter of dueling. However, if I see 2 players engaged in combat and it’s not behind the windmill or some other secluded place that the players have arranged to meet, I’m stomping the enemy and helping my teammate. When your teammates need help in the open field there’s no time to stop and say, “Excuse me server mate, but do you need me to help you?”

Never help a teammate in a 1vs1 unless he’s a lowbie or a staff ele (bearbows can die, I hate them too much).

Kill any enemy you come across. There are sPvP servers SPECIFICALLY for dueling. Ruining a duel nets your server up to three points in a matter of seconds.

if you’re in a common place for people to run by, then you’re fair game.

if you legitimately want to duel /beckon and have them follow you somewhere less obvious.

if you duel by an objective and I happen across it on my way playing WvW I am going to jump in for my loot, unless you are quick enough to type something in /say chat so I know you are dueling.

The global signal for dueling IMO is jumping around like a fool xD.

Is just funny how people seeks mechanics to compensate the lack of duel . . .

If two people are fighting 1v1, I just watch even if it is people from other servers.

If it is someone from my server and they are downed, then I will get involved at that point if the other person tries to stomp. 1v1 types tend not to stomp at the end though.

Either ask if they need help or jump in when you see your teammate trying to retreat.

Well sometimes it’s nice if you don’t jump into a fair 1v1 even if it was not a setup duel. Pulling 2v1 against two decent players is almost impossible in this game and so chances are that your intervention just trivializes the whole fight. Not very exciting.
It’s still allright to res / intervene if your ally goes downed during the fight, I believe.

Ruining a duel nets your server up to three points in a matter of seconds.

a.) three points matter a lot when matchups have point differences that go up to 100k.
b) winner of a matchup matters a lot.

ok, I just reviewed the monty python rules for pvp -

you kill them both, if they get upset, then it was a 1v1 -

Some times you can tell by the name or if you see them both bow, often I wont bother messing with a 1v1 just out of principle, but in my opinion if they want a clean 1v1 then the place to have it is at the windmill or some other out of the way place. I never mess with those areas, outside of that make your best guess and they will have to live with that.

I charge in right away, because if it’s not a duel then my teammate may need my help RIGHT NOW. if I see some indication that I just interrupted a duel then I’ll try to back out and let the duelers reset and restart.

I would rather force duelers to have to restart their duel than let a teammate die unassisted.

As someone who solo roams, and has this happen to me on my side and the enemies side, let me offer some suggestions.

1. If you see your side killing an uplvled guy, Don’t join in the fight…The person is already killing an uplvled person…In fact unless that player attacks you, don’t kill Uplvled people…Its prickish.

2. If you see 2 people fighting, its real simple, Don’t attack..you can watch….and only join in if someone from there server joins in… (Making it 2 v 2)

3. Its perfectly fine to stomp someone…..Though I have some rules myself, if you are terrible, and I just rofl stomp you….I generally will not stomp you and instead will leave you…Mainly because I didn’t think you were worthy of the stomp. If you were a good fight i’ll let you res and offer a rematch.

4. If you see 2 people fighting a 1v1, and one starts begging you for help…/laugh and walk away..

If it’s in some remote location, where it is very unlikely, it is NOT a duel, it might be an option, not to jump in, but even then, when in doubt, jump in and prepare for the stomp.

If they choose to duel in a crowded place, they gotta live with the consequences.

just tell em they were obviously about to get destroyed and didn’t stand a chance of winning, so you decided to save them because they obviously didn’t have the skills or equipment to win, then hit their opponent with a bunny finishing move and move on.

Over time you develop a sense for this. Location can indeed be an indication, yet the other night two of us came across a 1v1 by the windmill and it was NOT a consensual duel. We asked first and there was no response. We got a clue when the red player proceeded to stomp our teammate. Duelists usually don’t stomp. Needless to say, we saved the day before the stomp and the teammate said thank you.

How i identify a duel? Simply, i don’t attack guys near windmill or of green guy ask me to not interfere. Otherwise, red is dead.

Pretty much this. If i see a server mate in fight i will try to help him, no matter how many opponents there are. Obviously i will not charge into a 80 men zerg, but i will add into any fight as long as i think that there is at least a small chance that we can win.

1vs1 does not automatically mean that the fight is fair, not even when its the same class. My mesmer is build for solo roaming, if i attack another mesmer who is running group utility skills like Veil, Portal or Null-Field, then i have a huge advantage against him, despite the fact that we play the same class. That has absolutely nothing to do with “if he is bad, then he is dead”.

If you want to fight 1vs1 without a disturbance , go behind the windmill, there you will find like-minded people for fair fights.

I jump in and then let the other player stomp. I have had many people thank me and without the stomp they can just restart the fight if it is a duel. No harm no real foul. But I let my team mate choose whether or not a stomp happens. Sometimes your teammate doesnt have the time to tell you its a duel if you have heavy spike damage.
