How does scaling works in WvW?
Was your gear good for your level? Was his?
I was using level 14~16 gear and level 20 weapon(almost all equips with +power). He was using level 3x gear(not sure about bonuses).

WvW level scaling is interesting because it bases your stats on the max stats for your level at any one time. That means, if you’re level 5 and you just upgraded to level 5 weapons and armor, you may just be doing more damage than a level 10 with level 5 weapons and armor. That is because you are closer to the maximum stats you can possibly attain than the level 10 is. Now keep in mind that armor and weapon upgrades are available roughly every 5 levels, and if you don’t upgrade you are actually getting weaker each time you level up because you are getting further and further away from your possible maximum.
Here’s where is gets interesting. After a certain level, new item rarities open up with much better stats than before. At level 60, that set of masterwork items you were so proud of before is going to be hurting you because you could be wearing rares, so that’s the new stat limit the game is comparing you to. So though your friend has better gear than you stat wise, his gear is much farther away from the possible maximum of his class at that level (your gear is 2-3 levels behind your level while his is 20ish levels behind) which is why he’s doing less damage.

So the more you level up the more weak you get? Until you became able to get better equipment(which will become each time more difficult to get) and return to your “normal”. What is the point on this? =/ It makes me fell bad for leveling up…
In a weird way it keeps the playing field more even so new wvw player’s aren’t getting one shot
As you level up your maxium points in each stat also go up. So a level 80 will have a much higher maximum possible power/vitality/etc than a level 1. That means that as long as you keep your gear up to date you will get stronger as you level. Not keeping your gear up to date though results in you falling behind the curve and doing less damage than you would otherwise.
So using you and your friend as an example: A level 23 person with gear 2-3 levels behind is going to be more powerful than a level 52 person with gear 20+ levels behind. However, a level 52 person with gear 2-3 levels behind will be considerably more powerful than a level 23 person with gear 2-3 levels behind. That also means that a fully geared level 80 is much much stronger than a level 1 even if the level 1 has max stat gear for his level (not counting the obvious advantages of having more skills and traits).

Just buy all blues every 5 levels and your stats will be 2/3 to max all of the time. Gear 5 levels or more below your level gives you a penalty in wvw.
Until it scales armor and weapons like spve it’s not even playing fields. Funny to think so actually.
