Like or Dislike new WvW Bordelands
I want the old borderland back as soon as possible. Now I am going to spend much less time with this game as the BL maps are horrible as WvWvW maps.
When I want to WvWvW I need to queue to Eternal Battlegrounds. The current situation just creates massive queues to EB and leaves borderlands mostly empty.
I love the new map, but they need to remove the 2 copies because the population can’t fill it.
I do not like the new map at all. It’s way to big and all those small pathways leading to any place but not the place you want to go are really bleh.
The last 1 1/2 years I spent 95% of my time in wvw but so far, although I’d really like to just enter the BL, I just don’t because it’s zero fun for me there.
No one wants to spend half an hour looking for a fight for the chance to search for ages for the same spot again if you die.
I guess it’ll just end up as Karma train/Eotm style, so either it’s EB or nothing.
Roaming? More like hide and seek.
Zerging? Welcome to pirateship playstyle with all those chokes.
SImple maps would’ve been so much better. I also didn’t get an invite to the beta for those maps so this was the first time seeing them.
For me – dislike.
It’s nice as a map but not for WvW. It’s rather a beautifully designed PvE or even more, EoTM map.
It is amazing, so much fun.
Close this thread and reopen it in 3-4 weeks. There are no real opinions yet.
Many people play hot so we have to wait to see if the size and everything is good once you actually have que on every border again.
Not to mention the time you need to simply get uses to thus map. It just needs some time.
That’s also the reason why I won’t tell yet if I like it or not. Because nobody can already know how it will be played.
All we wanted was a GvG.
Is the first impresions that count since since some players come back to play the game and they do fast choice either they play or goin back. If the queues are now and this is the big amount of players on the map imagine how will be after a month when some will not play. Is just the first impresions since im playing this from long time but i was sure they will do something amazing… well im delude. I like the raptors that they put in game, if before 3 player in the morning could have some fun now in the morning the only thing you can do is fliping suplly camps. Defending a keep (called a keep with the design of startrek) where we use catapults and we fight with lasers i dont know. I like the mist of sand and lava , some good things but a lot that simply make no strategy batlefields just made me to not play wvw and this was the only thing i like it. Gliding is not in wvw wich i dont see any fun in that, now imagine the old bordeland with glide system XD i bet evryone would love to glide from old garrison down, why in the middle of the older bordelands they don put a maguma since no one like it those ruins. Im trying to give a chance of enjoing but first impresion is not like how was when i discover wvw, imagine a new player to this game.
Too much of a learning curve if you ask me. This new BL maps.. if EOTM wear light armor, this is EOTM with heavy armor. I dislike them with first impressions, reminds me too much about PvE with silly gimmicks.
I like the new map. It seems a bit empty, but I’m hoping that once people have worked through the elite spec grind they will come back to WvW and the maps will fill up a bit more.
I liked the old borderlands too, it would be nice if they could have the new and the old borderlands in rotation. That way you’d get more variation in world vs world, and the old maps were solid maps, seems a shame to just remove them from the game.
Gunnar’s Hold
This week my server is looking at a 1st-2nd-8th matchup, so players not filling up the maps has not been a severe problem. The maps are decently populated.
The map however has been absolutely terrible this far, reproducing many of the issues with EotM and why players generally do not go there to play WvW.
The map is large and have too many routes, while the routes themselves are wining and indirect, making it difficult to catch up to or reconnect with pickup groups.
The number of related chokes and drops probably came with the idea to make it easier for smaller groups to choke off larger groups, but it tends to have an opposite effect and more commonly be the cause for big groups to stand on each side of the chokes or drops and poking ranged attacks at oneanother – making it difficult to overtake prepared positions unless you have numerical superiority, at which point you can just push through with more cooldowns to burn.
The new siege makes this even worse, as we’ve spent a couple of days now looking at two big groups at a time, dancing around oneanother and building shield towers, where neither group wants to commit to anything and thus we see no wipes and rather unlucky players caught out with a further distance to run back.
There is very little in the way of encouraging small groups to claim offensive positions to operate out of with larger structures, bigger doors and longer distances over which to communicate and coordinate with other players – as to encourage initiatives and breaking up from uniblobs.
Giving the experience some time to settle and grow on me, so far, I have almost nothing good to say about the new map. The first trends are moving the direction some of us feared when we first heard of the map. It’s all about trains, gaps and boring pirateship stalemates. I really hope the trends or the map changes, or there will be massives queues to EB for players who actually wants to play WvW. We’ll just have to try to stay positive until we can see players or developers turning something around.

There’s too much going on atm to make a proper assessment on my part. I will wait a couple weeks then decide.
Have done 4 raids on the new borderlands,
-first impression : nice and beautiful environment. The shrines with buffs on keeps is a good to use advantage to defending ur keep.
-No supply use for upgrades is a good change, now players don’t need to worry that the upgrade is not done in time. And escorting dolly etc.
-nice to have some missions what u can do during ur raid to get some influence points.
Give u some extra thing to do if there is no fight at that point.
-many high and lower terain is good for fights imo, who think smart and know the map well has a slightly advantage against the other group.
-the new upgrades system is a hell for roamers/solo camp cappers. If that camp didn’t touched for a hr its a fully upgraded camp then u as roames has nothing to do there.
-the area inside any keep and tower is way to big, the lord is now already more powerful and more HP, so why make the inner area of a keep and tower so huge to take more time to take it. The design inside the towers look good tho, but that’s it.
-I had a big feeling that I was walking in EoTM because the map is just to huge.
- had some good fights in the new BL’s, but when we swap to EB there was even better fights and more people around. Because most players really dislike the new maps and don’t even bother to get in and defence or capping stuff.
In short terms: good to have a new map for a change, but this map is a fail imo, to large and to many PvE stuff what’s totally not necessary, new people will not go there because the old players doesn’t like to play there so it is empty, and why would a new player wanna walk solo in a wvw map with nothing to do? If I was a new player, and I go now to wvw and check out what it is, I see it’s pretty dead I will never go back in there unless there is a mission to do.
Thanks Anet to kill WvW again. Just a tip, please ask one or 2 of ur Anet dev squad join a guild and also a community to run around with 25 players. Do that a couple weeks in the old maps. Why I’m sure they didn’t joined a guild, because all what u see in the new changes ( stab change, pirateship, limitless stealth etc) I see u roam to much and didn’t participate to any guild runs.

The new map will be the reason i lost my last hope anet care about the rvr community and will force me to pause gw until a prober new rvr starts or anet change amny things like
-reverse stab change
-back to old bl
-proper gold/gear/skins for wvw player
- 0,00 pve in wvw or the need to paly normal pve to get gear/builds/heropoints
-lower the dmg in genral from players maybe a bit more on bl side
-stop this stupid ac staking/hiding in t3

i was so exciteted for new maps! thanks for another huge dissapointment. at least ill finally manage to quit this game for good, now that its completely ruined.
I hate this map, you spent toons of time just to get to the zerk, is lag and confusing. =(
I’m waiting a week or two before I make a decision about the new bl.

Pretty much.
I’m also likely done with gw2 for good, as well. Pretty crazy to think that I’ve been moderately addicted to it for nearly 3 years, spending entirely too much time (not to mention $ on gems). Anet is stubborn, so I don’t see them reverting things anytime soon.
Anyway, as has been widely discussed… my preferred game mode, WvW, went from merely neglected by Anet to utterly ruined. Not much more to say, really.
As for the PvE mastery gating/grind BS? Heavens no.
This expansion has been a failure of epic proportions. Probably the worst in MMO history, which makes me sad.
The only bright side that I can think of is that we only wasted money on one copy of HoT between my wife and I…
How can anyone answer this question? No one has been there yet. We’re all to busy grinding hero points in maguuma jungle.

omg… that laser thing is the worst idea ever… oh… let’s give the team with the most people on the map an even bigger advantage by damaging all the gates… who in the kitten thought that was a good idea? I was thinking the person/people who designed the maze like qualities of the new map needs to see a shrink… that laser idea confirms it as fact.

wvw is in my personal opinion my game type. I look forward to going onto my server and defending and enjoying my time in game!
Now nope i just can not enjoy eotm as a standard format for wvw maps .
Why
why not just improve what you had with the current maps why change it to eotm style maps.
Disappointed – ripped off- and hype train well gone with the maps !
If it ain’t broken don’t fix it… who ever redefined wvw i guess does not play that part of the game.
And any response from the developers ? says it all … got the money thanks cya..!
Any how as i say just my opinion of wvw my favourite past time has died!
God save the Queen! Before she gets updated too…

Theres a rule thats true in game design and in most things in life.
KISS. Keep it simple stupid.
Anet forgot that rule.
Like. I like it. I can see a few problems – I am, on the whole, positive about it.
I am 100% pleased.
I expected a pile of kittens so my expectations were totally fulfilled.
As a map, its great, varied and interesting.
AS a game experience, its pants. Was there for 2hours earlier, saw 1 enemy player roaming, and the biggest fight was 5 of us, against 5 of them……wow.
It descended into people roaming the map, calling out in /m to other lonely souls wandering the wasteland, occasionally you glimpsed other players in the distance, but its hard to be sure, delirium may have been setting in at that point….
Fighting at structures is far, far more fun than before. There are still some issues like catas that are right next to a wall being nigh impossible to hit/disable, but on the whole it’s much better. I’ve found that I get around as quickly as on the old map so the size doesn’t bother me. I also am constantly seeing players…no matter the size of the maps, they all tend to gravitate towards objectives sooner or later.
Overall: dislike
What I like: the size of the map
What I don’t like: the content
chopping wood one day, dropped a piece,
all I could say was, “…fell…foot…”
the map is too chaotic and insanely confusing as well as complex. it is a big disappointment to me. A-Net why don’t you revert it back for now the way it originally was or just make it a optional map in the list of wvw options with the original maps included in that list. because the new stuff is god-awful for wvw.
Dislike and so does all my guild, and we gave feedback to this effect during the beta tests

confusing is my first impression seems massive dont care for it already. the old borderlands or eb was never this confusing. tried to get one place took me an hour to figure out the route. too long they should have done kiss method. i dont also like they took out the ruins but keep the daily big mistake dont think they thought sany of this out just a few people sitting there thinking hey this will be cool and they got as glob of mess
I like the new ones, maybe cause they new, anyway, anything is better than same ones for 3 years.Seen just desert, looks epic.Had some funn fights already, think am gonna love it more than EB.
Maps are kinda empty because people are busy playing through the rest of HoT and getting their elite specs.
It will also take some time for people to figure out the map so I wouldn’t pay too much attention to those who jump to conclusions.
Dislike. Takes way too long to find a fight, and if you happen to die and have to port it’s a very long way back. If you’re running boosts to try and level up some wvw levels to try and get the elite before Xmas 2020 then these new maps are a no-go. Stick to EoTM and clock up the levels in there, you will go slightly less crazy.
Should have listened to the feedback from guilds instead of fanboy streamers who would probably tell you stampedes of elephants in wvw would be a great mechanic if you suggested adding it…
One map with three sides and 120-150 cap per side would have been great. Oh well.
Forced myself to do some pve after boring EoTM karma training for an hour, feels like a grind not a game.
It feels like anet attempted to deal with the population imbalance by making the map more “fun” to draw in new players. Here’s the problem with that:
The reason there was a lot of action in the old maps was because coverage was scheduled. Coverage was scheduled because it was possible to control each map (sometimes by a single commander and group). Consistent map control gave you an edge in the matchup which made all the effort worthwhile. That’s impossible right now. So much more coverage and effort is required to do what was done before, and we have to feel happy about doing that on a PVE styled, strategic mess of a map. I just don’t see it happening. The new map sure is pretty though.
Some of what (I think) the organized WvWers were hoping for:
- A new map that allowed for strategic control similar to the old one.
- Incentives and game mechanics for scouts, siege refreshers, tower defenders and havoc groups.
- Incentives for taking/defending objectives that scaled intelligently. (Outnumbered/excessive siege use penalties/2v1/time held)
- Server-wide incentives for winning a weekly match.
- A server-wide “call to arms” game mechanic.
- A solution for population imbalance.
- A solution for server lag during large fights.
First of all, I must say that the Desert Borderland looks amazing. If your computer can handle video quality at maximum settings, it’s pretty remarkable. So I give the interior decorator an A+. But unfortunately, that’s as far as my complements go. The map would have made an awesome PVE venue, but does not belong in WvW. It seems like it is ridiculously large and hard to navigate because of the terrain. This makes repelling borders almost laughable because of the time it takes to reach the enemy. The lack of Way Points in the East and West Keep’s adds to the frustration. With the Alpine Borderland, each fortification had a very distinct shape that was very recognizable on both the full screen map and mini map. You could tell where the walls and gates for each structure were at in a glance. The Desert Borderland map is too obscure. Also, the Keeps are extremely large and somewhat confusing to navigate because of the vast array of stairs, structures and over all layout. A couple of time’s, I wasn’t sure if I was on the inside or outside of my own keep and the map offered little assistance. Moving on to the World Ability Points. Reducing the cost of ability lines and completely removing Applied Strength/Fortitude to make them feel more attainable to new players or players with a world ranking below 300 is somewhat insulting to veteran players. Keep in mind, veteran players were newbies at one time too. We spent a great amount of time earning those abilities while learning how to play in an WvW environment. AF and AS were not OP. Labeling them as being unfair or speculating that they gave people this amazing game changing buff is simply untrue. They were a nice fill-in for builds that sacrificed power and health to increase other attributes to support different roles. Also, lowering the total points necessary to fulfill World Abilities means more useless points players are faced with. Here’s a suggestion, after attaining the World Rank of 945 “Silver Squire”, every point thereafter should be converted into Badges of Honor (Or some form of currency/loot).
All in all, IMO, the Alpine Borderland was rather simple. It focused more upon people actually fighting against people and emphasized the importance of learning the game mechanics.
Another thing I’d like to point out is, the major lack of incentive this new map brings to bear. What I meaning by this is, during the old days, people worked as a team and fought as a team. People would work hard to keep the supply lines flowing and the camps upgraded so the Keep’s would have the valuable supplies they needed. People would babysit the Keep’s to ensure that their Upgrades were started as soon as possible and in the right order. They also built & refreshed defensive siege. It took a lot of time, team work and effort to get a fully upgraded Keep. Therefore, when a Keep was under attack, there was a sense of urgency from all your team mates to defend. No one wanted to see all that work and time go to waste. Now that everything is on auto-upgrade and the Keep’s have no WP, defending a Keep seems pointless other than begrudging your enemy of a few PPT points and a little bit of karma.
Just my 2 cents
I love the new map, but they need to remove the 2 copies because the population can’t fill it.
I think this idea would help a bit with most servers but gold tier. This should be very easy to try out for the devs. I don’t want these guys’ hard work to go to waste. Though as any person with eyes can see by looking in this and every other WvW forum on the internet, that this isn’t working at all. A select few do like it, and tbh I’m not surprised. Some players actually don’t want to see other players when in WvW. It’s nutty, I know, but there’s always someone with the opposite taste as the average person. But this is the needs of the many vs the needs of the few situation I’m thinking.
Maguuma & A Few alts on other NA/EU servers
Yeah I’ll only go into EB to roam. The new Borderlands is EOTM without the ktrain. They clearly didn’t ask any wvw players/guilds and quite frankly it seems like the Developers have never been in wvw.
I think the map encourages running zergs over small teams more than the old map.
I do a mixture of solo roaming and T1 map blobbing (20:80 mix respectively).
Operating as a solo/duo roamer I found it harder to get things done than I normally would.
All the NPCs are stronger and in greater numbers making it take much longer (and thus more dangerous) to take an objective. Still achievable but gives emergency responders too much time.
Building siege is much harder because the run back to the supply camp is so much longer (or is that just in my imagination?).
The multi height layers in the map were also an issue. I dropped down a ledge to build a cata against a wall and then I turn around to run back to the supply camp to get more supply and I see I can’t get back up to the level I came from without running a marathon around the entire tower. So I gave up. It may just be a case of me needing to learn the new build locations, but I didn’t have that issue in the old borderlands.
While guilds are getting siege that have superior damage:supply ratios, roamers, the players that actually need a “low supply” solution don’t get one. They can buy guild catas from the TP but that’s not really the point.
I would like to a supply depot in near proximity to each each objective (so roamers can build things quickly) and a reduction in NPC strength/numbers (so roamers flip things more quickly). I see no point in designing a map to be counter-zerg and then making everything harder for small groups.
On the plus side, it’s very pretty map and once the Hero Point debacle settles down it is going to lead to some interesting fights in future. So I look forward to that.
I just wish Arenanet would gift WvW their elite specs so we can return to WvW. Right now having JQ/BG having organised Hero Point farming in WvW shows how bad the idea was.
Note: This is my early opinion and subject to change.
Get rid of the laser and I will learn to live with the rest in time but that laser has to go… replace it with some extra guards for the winner a bit like the quaggans used to do when you won the island in days gone by. But reducing all gates by slightly less than 50% is only going to advantage the side that needs the least amount of advantage (aka the side with the most players).

First impressions? Like, just because it is different and offers new fields to fight players in.
I like change, but as for whether it is balanced I can’t say one way or another.

“Seriously, just dodge.”
It is a beautiful map. I’ll give it that.
I think we need to learn all the shortcuts around the map. To easy right now to find your self at a dead end or too high/low and need to double back.
No ruins which makes master of ruins kind of pointless.
RIP City of Heroes
A sentiment that I have heard from a lot of dedicated WvW players (and one that I share) is that the maps would be awesome if they were always full of players.
I really think that the maps are fantastically well designed. They are interesting, and nuanced, and complex. I do think however, that this complexity really tends to exacerbate the feeling of emptiness that comes with a lack of population.
Honestly, Imagine how things would be different if we had release level population (queue every map during prime-time for the top 2-3 tiers at least) on these maps, it would be absolutely amazing. Right now though, they feel huge and empty and a little sad.
I’m hoping that once people work their way through a good portion of the PvE content, things will come alive again. My sole worry is that a lot of people will never even really give the new BLs a chance, which will leave the people who do running around empty maps. I know that for a lot of veteran WvW players, it feels a lot like Anet has just given us the shaft with this one, but maybe take a break and come back, see how things are in two weeks or so when Halloween is gone and people have unlocked an elite spec or two and decide to WvW again.
Don’t like it, too big, too much PvE.
They definitely should have delayed the release of the new WvW map. With so many people in PvE, that is really souring people on the new map, as well. If it was going to work at al, it needed to have a good population. Since everyone is in PvE, people are randomly wandering into WvW, seeing it barren, and getting a very bad taste in their mouths.
This could, honestly, be the thing that makes WvW jump the shark, if it has not already.
I think they should do a log-in vote or something to get a better sense of what their player-base as a whole thinks.
love it. will be much better when initial HoT hype dies down and more people are playing wvw. most wvw people I know, which is a good chunk of the CD wvw community are working on their guilds, masteries and specialisations.
it’s gonna be killer when everyone’s back on. never have to defend bay again. woooooo

looks like this new map is the end of wvw. that makes me sad, I was hoping we’d see a resurgence of new and old players. looks like a dead game mode =(

Yes this is a good point and the fact is such a situation really only occurs on T1 reset for a few hours. Its a situation that is also exacerbated by server caps being too low. I think they may have banked on a lot of players returning to the game which doesn’t appear to have happened. They are going to be forced to merge servers I think.

100% in agreement. However all of this is related to WvW population issues that have been talked about for almost 2 years. Releasing this map without resolving the low population issues was a huge mistake that they will have to fix really soon else this game mode is not going to survive.
As I said: Merge empty servers or remove duplicated maps or both.
This could really have been a amazing thing if they actually had listen to their regular wvw players about what they actually wants, but they didn’t, not even after all the betas were this was said over and over they just ignored it.
So what would we have wanted if they had asked us. Less pve stuff. Because we are not there to do pve at all. This they understand in pvp, because they do not put pve things in pvp maps that effect fights because they understand that it would be a bad thing and that we are only there to fight eachother not to do pve. For some reason and i don’t know if it is different developers doing this, but for some reason wvw developers have a different view over what their wvw players wants and it is not representing what we actually do want.
So what do we want. Well the new sentries are great were you can see enemies for a short period, i really like those. The shrines are ok, the upgrades are ok but need a overhaul because as it is now it does not work as intended, but with some adjustment it would be great. The defense are ok, but is overwhelmingly to much pve over it.
I was all for getting more hp to any npc inside camps, towers and keeps. They could even be harder to kill, but having two zergs inside of the earth keep having to focus on jumping to avoid waves from the lord and to win over the other zerg and be able to cap it (none of us owned the keep), like a stupid teqatl event, it just pushed me over the edge to a point were i dont want to go back in to the new maps again. And wvw is my first choice of game mode in gw2.
What need to be done to reverse this before it is to late, and please do not think that this is just something we get used too, like with EotM, we wont, this is a emergency that needs to be dealt with.
So what to do, well either put the old maps back, or start rebuilding the new one. Make the map smaller, make the keeps and towers smaller, put suplies closer to gates, remove the stupid pve events from the lords and get more hp on them and more damage from them so that it just takes longer to kill. As it was before i could actually kill sentries as upscaled lvl 2 character.
Remove the EotM bridges, lanes and what not, so that we can focus on fights not on how to walk. We are not there to watch our feets, we are there to fight enemies. Like in pvp, just bigger fights.
Make running to and from camps/keeps and towers more straight forward.
I am really worried about wvw and even more worried that we do not have a comunication open with devs before this is to late. Because it really will be to late if nothing is done. WvW were already bleeding players before expansion and the reactions i have had so far is huge disapointment, so please open up comunication and work with us!
