Our first WvW Forum Specialist has found that he is no longer able to continue in the program. The Forum Specialist Program involves volunteers, and we fully understand when other projects and real-life demands preclude someone’s ability to continue. We wish our departing WvW specialist well in the future, and thank him for his service.

We would like to reach out to the WvW Community to ask for volunteers to join the Fansite Specialist Program. You can read about the program on this post. Please pay special note to the two brief posts that follow in that thread. The first provides additional information about the specialists’ role and the second addresses the question of “If I have an infraction from 1954, am I disqualified from applying?”

If you have questions about the program, drop us a line at the address provided in the post.

We are committed to the FSP and look forward to hearing from members of the WvW playerbase who want to get more deeply involved in relaying player concerns and helping us make this exciting game mode even better.

No offense, but what service? Please pick someone that is active in WvW and on the forums.

Just because he wasn’t posting doesn’t mean he wasn’t doing what ANet asked him to do. The other specialists have chimed in to say that they is no rule that they have to be active on the forums.

One thing struck me hard when reading the rules about FSP.

“must live in USA and be 18”.

18 years old, I have no quarrel with, i’m baised as I have this age requirement, but then again legally it’s best to only accept ‘adults’ since that prevents law problems.

“must live in USA”: OUCH. really OUCH. Yes Anet is a USA based company. But that’s about where the ‘USA’ tag of Arenanet Ends. Mother company is Not USA based but Asia based as far as I know. Player base is almost all the world. This specific game instance is EU+NA and in lesser way asia + africa. (statistical at least). Forums? Americans + english speaking EU + others joining in. I think I pretty often see EU players post on forums. There might be more NA (USA even specific) gw2 players then any other country out there, But I strongly Suspect that USA doesn’t even have half of the gw2 player base of gw2 on their hands. So with all this in mind, why are EU people discriminated? I don’t get it.

Another point to support this opinion: I played on NA (two servers), FA and a t1 server. But I mostly play on EU. For wvw specificly, the playstyle massively differ, communities Differ, Ways of using Teamspeak are quite different in my opinion. Of course there’s also some similar things, but overral, they are to different, to be carried by only one side FSP. Since not one but TWO are asked for, one should be from EU and one from NA in my opinion.

Wvw is a hugely complex problem at the moment, balancing versus reward, Freedom versus forced equal matchups, Fun versus Win rate etc. Having only one side of the world (with their specific playstyle), be the appointed FSP is a little to biased in my opinion.

Sorry if this post comes across as non Collaborrative, but As a long time Gw2 player, I find these points important, And I think nobody on Anet plays enough wvw (1000+ hours) to have enough knowledge at this point to hold an unbiased opinion about it. I’m neither unbiased, but my opinion is more balanced due to the long time of playing wvw and the game. My hope is this insight will make it so, that the forum specialist are almost as unbiased as possible, making the program a big succes. The first 6 month application is the most important one imo. It will never be more important then now, cause of the Stability chance, pirate ship meta, Trait overhaul (potentially breaking wvw balance), new wvw borderlands, matchup balance, etc.

TL:DR: Choose the right people in the right way.

Snip

As to why only “must live in the US” Source

First let me address the “US resident” thing. It breaks my heart when we have to do this — for contests, for this program, for other things — but we really must do it for legal reasons. Different countries have different definitions of volunteer work and we simply do not have the means to have the program reviewed and adjusted to conform to multiple legal requirements that may apply to any given volunteer opportunity.

I think a lot of potential good candidates wont be eligible simply because of the USA requirement.

Yes, that is very true and I regret it more than I can say. This is a pilot program and we may be able to extend it in the future, though.

Be careful what you ask for
ANet may give it to you.

Well I understand Laws can bite you in the kitten , but it still feels Biased, and tiny discriminating as EU resident. EU is a huge part of gw2 playerbase, without EU, i think Anet wouldnt even be able to invest in Heart of Thorns.

If Law is a problem, then why can they sell the game in our countries, have the Rules of Conduct apply in all countries? That is no problem. Sure revenue is more important so they researched this a lot to have it settled, but still, it can’t be that hard.

Volunteer is volunteer. That doenst change in any country. NDA contract is a standalone thing. If you sign it, it binds. All countries support NDA, otherwise release dates etc would be spoiled far and much over the internet. And volunteer is simple: you sign some rules + responsibility, but you can step out at any time. I’m pretty sure a contract like that would bind legaly in all countries.

I rather have them go ahead with it, even with the scare of law problems. In worst case, the EU people are temporary pulled out to solve the legal problems if someone claims Anet is not abiding laws. The only reason I can see them to scared to do this, is if the FSP people have knowledge other people have not the right to know yet. But there’s several sources the claim FSP people know nothing more then ordanary players. So I don’t get it. A bit of rambling, but I think this FSP program will hurt EU player base as their opinion (and more importantly straightly connected experience as an FSP player) will not be in the notes FSP-people send to Anet. Matchup balance is complex enough as it is, it needs straight imput that is 100% understood by FSP from both EU/Na. And some things you just can’t wright down, but have to see for yourself.

Maybe they can’t appoint someone from the EU as it would be subject to the Human Rights Act and if they suffer from infractions and a lack of freedom of speech a case would be taken in the European Court of Human Rights? (haha).

Seriously though, restricting it to US based players only isn’t a good idea, whatever reasons are put forward for it.

Perhaps a better solution would be to appoint one from USA to cover USA issues and one from EU, as we are all aware that the issues and playstyles are slightly different between the two regions.

As for being disqualified for infractions, just use an alt account, problem solved:-)

What is the point of having one then? We allready know what WvW problems are, they have been the same in years.

The point is to placate the community’s desire for communication (both despite and because there is nothing to say) without committing any Arenanet™ manpower to the problem.

Nobody at Anet loves WvW like Grouch loved PvP. That’s what we need, a WvW Grouch, but taller.

People asking for payment or compensation of some sort for being a forum specialist? Really?

I was a volunteer GM for a gaming company based in Europe (although I’m in Australia). When I signed up for the role, I did not expect to be paid anything. The satisfaction of being able to help fellow players and have a part in improving player experience was all the payment I needed. Being able to kick gold spammers off the server during times when other GMs were asleep was a bonus

The fact that I was on a completely different continent didn’t seem to be a problem, they just asked me to sign an NDA and code of conduct.

Having been in a role where you’re the link between players and the game staff/developers, I know the frustration of being ultimately powerless, but having to bear the brunt of players’ anger. I hope whoever takes up the role of WvW forum specialist is prepared with extra thick skin and infinite patience.

In my last MMO I was guild leader for the largest international guild on the European servers. We were a social, adult PvE guild where people could play with their kids. We were well respected for playing fair. No hacks, no scams, nothing. They just weren’t needed.

Several of our members applied for positions as forum moderators and volunteer in-game moderators. They couldn’t moderate on their own servers, but they got GM characters with a bunch of special powers to not just report but to sort kitten out and put hackers out of their immediate misery.

It got to the point that there were so many of us that many players just assumed that I was one too, but it was never true. I finally had to ask company game mods to confirm that. Then I gave an explanation of why that is.

Any gaming company that wants to know what I know about their game, where the problems are, who the problem players are, only need to read my posts on their own forum. I believe in name and shame, because it works. That last game was free2play so a lot of people didn’t care but after a while it worked to take out the garbage. It’s no fun getting caught all the time, losing an account and getting your name on a wall of shame (again).

Next, I always appreciated a fairly prompt reply, as in, “thanks, we’ll have a look at that the next time we see that player logged in”, and to really get my respect, actually deal with the game bugs and problem players in a timely and public fashion.

Last of all? If you really want me doing a job your staff should be doing? You can pay me, otherwise I’m going back to playing a game.

That last game company didn’t always didn’t do those things and that’s why I never applied for any position. I’m probably not alone in wanting things done this way, and given what we all know about Anet’s forum policies, it doesn’t surprise me that many WvW players are a bit cynical.

My posts are facts as I know them, or my own opinion, and do not represent any guild.

Volunteering for companies just doesnt make any sense. Privatizing profits (—>Anet/Ncsoft) but socializing the losses (time and electricity in this case) doesnt make any sense to me. Anet isnt a charity so no reason to work for free for them.

Again, there is no loss to the community that you won’t ever be a forum specialist. It has nothing to do with your thoughts on getting compensated. Trust me.

Thats your opinion. I would hate to see you being a forum specialist, too.

Yes, indeed it is my opinion but having seen many of your posts over the years I stand by that opinion.

I agree I would be a horrible forum specialist as well. I’m way too opinionated, too eager to engage in arguments, and often tend to devalue what others have to say. That is why I didn’t volunteer and will never volunteer even though I am eligible. At least I am aware of that.

The legal reasons have to do with labor laws being different around the world regarding volunteerism and the simple fact that U.S. laws make this permissible and legal for them to do with U.S. residents.

As I understand it, in order to do this in a way that would allow people to apply from other countries they would need to hire some lawyers there and sort out the legalities, making it very expensive to implement with zero financial return on investment.

It’s not unreasonable and it isn’t them being mean and excluding all of us outside of the U.S., but it does really suck.

I love how they had to lax the ‘requirements’ for WvW rep because everyone that cares about WvW has been infracted at one point or another

The parameters for involvement in the program have not changed at all; we’ve simply made them clearer by expressing them outright. We have never had a “You must have a 100% perfect record” policy because we understand that the occasional slip of the fingers or overly-heated comment does not mean that someone would be a bad specialist.

Throw in a free GW2 T-shirt and I may consider.

How many gems does one get for “volunteering”? And don’t say none because we all know the answer is never none.

These are volunteer positions and do not involve compensation, that t-shirts or gems.

Anet is a business. Why would I help them being more successful without any form of payment?

For non monetary/material gain?

I was a volunteer GM for a European gaming company for several years until I no longer had the free time to continue. They specifically did not give players any perks in order to attract those who truly cared about helping make the player experience better. I think that was a good strategy. I may not have gained anything material, but I did have a lot of fun and worked with some very nice people.

I have also volunteered for local conventions, and even if they didn’t pay me or give me free/discounted entry, I still would have done it because it was such a great experience. These events usually had hundreds of volunteers, and simply could not happen if they had to pay the volunteers as employees.

On a similar note, one of my work colleagues loves going to live concerts and gets free or discounted entry by volunteering at the concerts of her favourite bands. Yes, this benefits/profits the business/company, but if the person is willing to volunteer, why not?

Now I’m not suggesting everyone should work for free, but those wanting to be paid for this forum specialist role are probably not the type of people Anet want for the role anyway.

I think knowing that the WvW player’s concerns are surely going to be relayed to the devs instead of wondering whether they are actually listening or not is a pretty big deal. Granted, the last specialist was super fail but that was mainly because Anet did not properly advertise the program.

There are also probably a lot of players who would be able do this job (or provide valuable feedback to the devs) but were banned thanks to the overzealous moderating of this forum during the first year of the game.

I’ve lost count how many people got infractions for voicing their very legitimate concerns, would get frustrated by the complete lack of communication by the dev team (face it anet, it was true back in ‘12-’13), would post more aggressively as a result and ultimately got banned.

See now this is (for me at least) the example of a (almost) perfect FPS: Someone who comes to the forums and even posts in forums that are not really connected to his ‘expert’ domain, and even gives people a fair warning. It means he cares about the game, community, but mostly importantly the forums. That’s what I kinda hope comes out of the FSP. I sincerely hope for wvw, that the people chosen can act as objectively as possible, but mostly try to connect with both NA and EU wvw playstyle wich vary to some degree.

Oh we know that, but those of us who do are unable to apply for one reason or another. The problem is that many of those who would have been well suited for this position have been banned from the forums already. Anyone who cared for WvW would have complained continuously and gained enough infractions for it.

When marmatt was chosen you should have read the immediate reaction by us, we all said he was not suitable based on his forum history and even his WvW activity and rank. He even boasted about his rank, and we laughed cos PvE ktrain players in EOTM would have had a greater rank than he did!
We were ignored yet again, we were forced to give him a chance even though we knew he wasnt up to the job.

This is why I find it funny that the PvP Forum Specialist is posting here, I know sPvP has also been ignored by devs, but when it comes to WvW, you aint seen a more hostile environment. There should be a sign on the door “Lasciate ogne speranza, voi ch’intrate”

Who is/are the “Guild Wars 2 Forum Specialist – Profession Balance” folk? That’s a position I’d be interested in.

I’m also curious…

  • may not be employed by ArenaNet within 12 months of acting as a Guild Wars 2 Forum Specialist

…is intended to indicate forum specialist can’t be ex-employees, forum specialist will categorically not be considered as hiring candidates, or both?

Not easy for WvW as WvW has a lot of things to complain about compared to PvE and PvP. Furthermore, WvW seems to be neglected and that will add further pressure to the specialist as players will bombard him

Dungeon content is pretty much just as ignored as WvW. Their forum are also extremely disgruntled. However they ended up with a really good specialist who communicates very well with the forum. I believe he sends weekly reports to Anet.

Yet communication from Anet to that forum (whether through him or otherwise) is just as lacking as before.

Thank you for the kind words!

Trimmed down your quote just for the sake of space, please don’t take offense to it.

I really do not know exactly what Gayle looks for within a Forum Specialist, I know within my own history i had a lot of small infractions from heated debates. Hopefully she can clarify a bit more on the ban issue and see if it will be an auto deny or not. I’d hope as long as it’s not within the last 30 days it should be fine to apply.

I did read the things posted about marmatt;however, I did not know anything about the guy so i kept my opinions to my self and let the wvw community do their thing.

Things could have gone differently on both sides, I personally really did not like how he tackled the situation on day 1. From a community stand point, I think it would have been better to give him a week before tossing him in a ditch.

Who is/are the “Guild Wars 2 Forum Specialist – Profession Balance” folk? That’s a position I’d be interested in.

The current Guild Wars 2 Forum Specialists are as followed:
Rising Dusk.2408: Dungeons and Fractals
Riku.4821: PvE
The Gates Assassin.9827: PvP
Wolfey.3407: PvP

For everyone else:

For anyone who does apply for wvw, do consider posting your accolades and criteria within the WvW area. Even if they are pointless or not really something to brag about, list it for Gayle and others to see.

E.g.
What is your WvW Rank?
569 Bronze Champion
Do you command a lot?
I command roughly two-three hours a week
What achievements are you close to finishing within wvw?
Realm Avenger i’m 45,456/250,000
Everything else is T3

Looking at mine with regards to the wvw community, you can see that is pretty laughable on how low most of that is. But, its done in a way to where they can quickly pull out some of the information and see that I play wvw somewhat frequently, i command very little but i do know how to command. That may be enough information to have my application be tossed into the “maybe pile” instead of the “auto reject pile”.

Ah, thank you . They described the position in the original call for volunteers… they just never filled it. Good to know.

The problem was that one of the requirements was and still is someone who is active not only in the game but also on the forums.

Marmatt dud not meet either:

Marmatt

Total hours: 2,500
WvW rank: 300
Total AP: 8,500
Total Kills: 5,700

As you can see his stats were lower than yours (assuming the example are your stats) and you agree you wouldnt be suited/accepted by the WvW community, so why did Mark?!

Well after dozens of concerned posts, Mark threatened us once again, so we kept quiet and decided to see what would happen. And all our expectation were met! In fact Marmatt surpassed our expectations, not only was he a really bad choice he disappeared and couldnt even be bothered to let anet know!

So the next question we want answered is if Marmatt was to send [b]weekly] reports, didnt the WvW dev he was supposed to send them to ask where they were?!
not only did Marmatt miss one week’s report, or even 2; he didnt make 10 weeks worth of reports!

The stats are mine sadly lol

In regards to the forum reports, we as forum specialist do not know what happens to them after we submit them. The process is as follows:

Read The Forums → If there is a questions answer it honestly → Move on.
|
V
If there is a suggestion or feedback → Read through the comments→ Take note of it within a word document with the format Gayle has provided. → Add our recommendation → Send to a email address provided by Gayle.

Once we hit send, all of our reports go to the same inbox and what happens from there is a mystery. I’d theorize that Gayle or someone else goes through them and send them out to the correct departments.

With heart of thorns/ support tickets/ everything else going on…. I’d imagine our weekly reports are a “when we can get to it” type of priority. Again, I don’t know so i really can’t say for sure.

Well that’s really lame.

This was supposed to improve communication, instead we get the message “We cant be bothered to read the forums ourselves”
You would expect them to get back to you regarding your reports, otherwise what’s the point?! Players will be bugging specialists about their reports and what the devs’ replies are; but if communication is still one-sided then why have this set up, it’ll make things worse.
