Is Anet looking into this or just ignoring it? Pretty sad that people complain they want something different for server match-ups and then the change they make is worse then it was to start with.

Blame it on Devon Carver. Last I checked, he’s the only proponent for this. Hope he can heft the bill when the customers ditch the product.

All I can say is that getting smashed four weeks in a row from servers 2 – 6 levels higher is killing moral on Kaineng. Sure we are out matched but over half of our WvW players have finally stopped playing. We could have fun even if we didn’t win before, now it’s making people quit and leave. Give us some dignity and drop us a few tiers… please… if random matchups put a server against massively OP servers for or more than four weeks in a row then it shouldn’t be so random… add some logic so the same server cant draw the short straw every time.

Having a system that takes months to balance when WvW guilds migrate can kill the game for some people.

For people who get paid to develop games for a living I really can’t believe that you guys didn’t account for the variables that could destroy or enhance a servers performance. Maybe if we had an Arenanet dev in a Kaineng WvW guild they would understand the situation… oh wait we did… they left to Tarnished Coast /goodbye

Like fileark said, 4 weeks of this garbage it’s not even worth playing. Most of us are asking ourselves, “is it friday yet?”

Not true.

That said, look at the match-ups and you can already see how broken the old “ratings” were. You have three close matches but two of them would have never happened in the old system. TC is stuck in limbo because they are not a T2 server but there’s no room for them in T1, so someone is either going to get stomped by them or by whoever is pushed out of T1 for a week. This would be unavoidable under any system because there are four servers to three spots. In T7 19>23>17 which doesn’t fit any expectation (so this needed to happen to properly place these servers), and T8 has and will always remain a lopsided match-up.

So, in NA, the only “predictable one-sided” match-ups that aren’t the limbo-trapped TC match-up are T3 and T4.

EU is all wonks of messed up from the old system but I spy with my little eye four, maybe even five given how lenient one with their metric, of “close” matches.

I’ve been supportive so far but my patience is wearing thin.

Welcome to the reason 95% of my guild has stopped playing. WvW doesn’t bring in money. PvE Gem Shop does.

On topic: only way to solve this is to balance population, that will never happen unless they allow you to have both a PvE and WvW server with the WvW servers with a small and capped population.

Players created this problem by stacking servers and are now asking ANet to fix something we broke.

And? Historically, post-collapse, SoS was never ranked above Maguuma aside from week 22→23 jump where SoS was marked up so high that it gained three ranks from 10 to 7 while Maguuma lost ratings due to its one-sided match up against DB (which clearly shows the distinction between the top six servers and the next set down, and then further the distinction between TC and DB/FA).

Meanwhile, you can see how servers ranked several ranks below their competitors, ended up winning in the middle to low tiers, showing that the old system had effectively stranded servers in places where they didn’t belong. The biggest problem, at the moment, is that the top servers have such hard distinctions between them and everything else below that some of them just have no place to fit. TC is a prime example of a server in limbo.

In general, if the spread was cut-tighter the top six servers should be pretty much isolated from the others, leaving T1/T2 pretty much stable (of course this becomes a problem in T1 where the match-up is already so likely that TC will almost never break into T1), much to the chagrin of the stale T1 match-up and, possibly TC, who haven’t showed much trouble in beating their rank-neighbors.

But, looking at the middle tiers, cutting the spread right now wouldn’t be right because you still have middle/low-tier servers that are showing that they don’t belong in their current rank (either up or down).

So, now, we’re stuck with a limbo-server (TC) and even if they move up by chance, whoever is displaced from T1 will simply demolish anyone they are put up-against. This pretty much means we have a guaranteed bad match-up every week in that slot because we have four servers that “fit” T1 but only three slots in T1. The T3 grouping is the only one that has been consistently mis-matched without any caveats to the match-up unlike T2 which is always going to be lopsided either because TC is stuck in limbo or because SoR/BG/JQ got found their way into T2 and did to it as a meteor does to the fine china. T3 – T7 have oscillated between good and bad match-ups as servers have moved around in the placings.

Vena your points are solid but there are a number of things ANet can do to still help improve things:

  1. Lower the RNG on the Ratings Deviation used for Matches (better chance of Servers close in Rank playing each other)
  2. Switch to a “One Week Random/One Week Tier” Schedule so at least every other week Servers would play those they are supposed to be closest to in Rating
  3. Add a Handicapping System so matches can still be competitive even with imbalanced Coverages
  4. Redo the whole Scoring System so that the weaker 2 Servers in a match have some incentive to team up on the strongest one
  5. Break the matches into “Weekend” and “Weekday” formats where fewer Maps count for WvW Scoring during the week helping to offset huge coverage imbalances
  6. Lower Map Capacity to both force people on over-populated Servers to choose between long queues or transferring (preferably with a Free Transfer Window to lower-ranked Servers) and also reduce/eliminate Skill Lag

Several of these should be easy for ANet to implement quickly while others might take more work, but all we’ve seen so far is silence and it is definitely hurting the game not helping.

I like idea #2, Rackhir; as far as something that can be implemented quickly.

I’d personally prefer two in tier, one random; but that can be tuned.

The random matchup system has had some positive points. It did shake up some stale matchups and it can act as a vehicle for a server that has bettered itself to actually prove that fact.

However, I think T3 is never going to get to fight T3 at this rate. FA vs KN; SoS vs. SBI? That’s not helping anything and is making things worse.
How about SBI vs KN vs BP? That will actually settle something. Mag-SoS-EB, that NEEDS to happen in the worst way.
How about CD vs EB vs YB? That would prove something.

The only drastic corrections left are AR dropping like a rock and DH coming out of nowhere to be a force in T5.

Due to constant population shifts and server attendance I don’t think you can squarely pinpoint that as the reason.

Not to mention that the current system along with an increase in lag with a recent update; has increased the number of people switching servers. While we haven’t seen too many large guild shifts like we have in the past, there are a lot of small groups moving around and a lot of individual changing servers.

That’s like with me, I’m from the Piken Square server, and last week we were doing great, but this week we were put up against number 2 and 4 I think of the top wvw servers. Needless to say we’re struggling to keep our own borderlands, let alone our own stuff in Eternal Battlegrounds.

It’s a huge turn-off for any WvW’er, knowing that you’re up against the elite, when you’re nowhere near that, and it really annoys me when people say ’it’s not all about numbers’, well, actually, a lot of the time, it IS all about numbers. Try 8 vs. 50, yeah, not gonna come out of that alive are we?

Usually when we’re the red team, we are put up against the hardest teams ever, and on those weeks I hardly ever WvW because we just constantly lose, it’s not all about losing all the time though, it’s numbers. When we’re up against way better servers, everyone wigs out and ultimately end up outmanned 90% of the time. It’s a sign when you have to keep all your siege golems at the very first waypoint, and logging in to see yet another enemy server just recently take over your keep – it’s just ridiculous. It’s almost like they’re mocking us with ‘who wants to take over Piken Square’s keep this hour?’.

What Anet should do is stop making it completely random, but based more on strategy (siege/overcoming huge obstacles etc.), team points at the end of the week, and the amount of people playing in WvW (numbers). Because it wouldn’t be fair matching 2 of the elite servers with 1 that isn’t anywhere near it, or 2 highly populated WvW servers vs. 1 that hardly plays at all.

I remember when we were up against Riverside (the arrow cart gods), and they seemed to never sleep, they were always in WvW. Maybe they just have a lot of WvW guilds online all the time, who knows, but what I do know is they were good, and a big part of that was their siege placement, NUMBERS, and their strategy – they managed to keep one of our home borderlands keeps for almost a week. They had many arrow carts, a waypoint, they had 0 supply left, but because their strategy was so good and they had the numbers, they got supply from other places and simply waypointed back at the right time and we couldn’t do anything. Trust me, we tried EVERYTHING. To be fair though, it was around the time when arrow carts could hit you from a world away, but still, they were one tough server that we were unfortunately matched up against.

Tell me..if people aside from Devon favor the new system..why do we have a 17 page thread filled with complaints from disgruntled customers mostly? Even the mindless reddit/hive mind/fanboyz stopped defending the new silly system.

Nobody Likes getting spawn camped or logging on to get rolled by large zergs week after week.

There are countless valid suggestions of fixing this on the forums by various customers. I see their suggestions and pleas continuously ignored. I see it as stuberness by the person responsible.

It’s one thing to make a mistake. It’s completely another to insist on doing it over and over again.

Seriously ANet, what did they ever do to you? I remember getting in knock-down, drag-out fights in grade school for 1/10th of the provocation involved than there is here.

I know EU has bunched up their top ratings so that’s why it’s happening; but isn’t this a good reason to cease the RNG experiment? You have T1-T3 less than 100 rating points apart right now, maybe you should tier it up a little and let things shake out a bit.

The closest matchup that SoS has had since RNG started was the exact same one that everyone quotes was “breaking the system” (SoS-SBI-CD)

The posters from the two servers who complained about the matchup ad nauseum were absolutely thrilled with this matchup over the alternatives. Even SBI (up matched 7 spots) found it a nice break from the servers they had been facing.

When the servers from the most unbalanced NA matchup, prior to the new system, are happy to see each other again….that’s pretty much a raging endorsement for scrapping this failure of a sociology experiment with 3 lines of bad coding.

First however, we need to let the ratings adjust by having more varied matchups like these. If you look at EU, which is using the exact same system, you can see matchups with numerous surprising results. The same will likely be true by the end of the NA matchup.

Yes and they are still very surprising results but not in a good way.

TL;DR: We are going to wait at least a couple more weeks before changing any of the math behind the new system, but it is very likely we’ll decrease the size of the variation at some point.

Please Devon, I think it’s about time them Maths need changing up a bit, what I mean is Kodash and Far Shiverpeaks shouldn’t be said in the same sentence as each other, never mind same match up. The variations of ratings is far to wide they do need to be adjusted slightly.

The rating difference between the 2 server was 330.117 at reset which seems quite alot.

Kodash was: 1 813.937
Far Shiverpeaks was: 1 483.820

Just slightly unbalanced.

Players created this problem by stacking servers and are now asking ANet to fix something we broke.

Ending free transfers (and banning new-transfers from wvw for a week) sorted the stacking problem. Then Anet, for reasons I still can’t fathom, decided to utterly break the matching system. Being unpaid alpha-testers for a product we’ve paid for is starting to wear a little thin IMHO.

100% agree. T1 + T2 should be in their own little world and battle each other. The drop off from 6 to 7 is massive.

GG ANet. We continually get placed with servers WAY out of our ranking (KN, SoS, CD, etc) while T1 stays static as always.

I’m done with GW2 for a while. I’m so bored with this garbage I feel like uninstalling the game. Get your crap together. Get a clue. This is stupid.

Actually I think the opposite is true. Ending free transfers created worst stacking than ever before. With free transfers, people will stack onto servers to force those who wants competition and those who wants to play onto other servers. The queues will be unbearable and thus forces people to move away. Now with paid transfers, people want to only spend their gold/gems to transfer into a server that is guaranteed to win even though they know they are super-stacked. Most guilds loves to go to a server who they can out-blob another server. Their mentality is hit 1 key repeatedly and close eyes since any other skills probably won’t activate. Wake up and see badges and other loots.

WvW is just getting horribly boring. Same thing week after week. One server will always be a super zerg that has 24 hour coverage and 80 people on constantly rolling over the other 2 servers and spawn camping them. People have made countless suggestions on how to fix this and Anet does nothing about it. Customers are getting kitten ed and this wait and see what happens attitude by Anet isn’t helping. DO SOMETHING OR PEOPLE WILL JUST GET BORED AND FIND ANOTHER GAME TO PLAY! Atleast freaking act like you’re trying to fix it. No one is enjoying the current system except for the mega zergs. It needs to be fixed now, not later.

We had Pac-man done to us last week, and again this week. Boring, boring massive zergy servers that we can’t compete with. WvW = no-go zone.

Kowtowing to the top tier server’s whiners was the worst best mistake in Anet history.

Nobody at Anet loves WvW like Grouch loved PvP. That’s what we need, a WvW Grouch, but taller.

Not everyone is unhappy, a lot of people said they like the new system.
And for sure it is much better than the old.

But it’s a bit boring to repeat that week by week as you continue complaining week by week

The new system could be improved by some details, e-.g. by smaller variance or non-uniform rolls (make 0 rolls more likely than +1/-1 rolls).

And imbalanced matches are not necessarily boring, it is just you did not saw the trill of parallel competitions. (We played our match better than our competitor played his match, so we passed them, e.g. EU top 3 plays in 3 different matches, who will be the 1st, 2nd, 3rd on Friday, is a quite open question at moment.)

Edit. I guess CD has a good sizeable Ocn but in our match SoS kept them in check so it wasn’t as noticable. And BP never did care that much about Eternal.

And imbalanced matches are not necessarily boring, it is just you did not saw the trill of parallel competitions. (We played our match better than our competitor played his match, so we passed them, e.g. EU top 3 plays in 3 different matches, who will be the 1st, 2nd, 3rd on Friday, is a quite open question at moment.)

Elona Reach… imbalanced matches… ah ok

Of course, it needs both sides for an imbalance.
Elona vs Gunnars vs RoF would be a nightmare match for us as bad as FoW and Vabbi for you.

And yes in an imbalanced match we are most likely the winner by score, but unfortunately also the looser by rating.

I just have the feeling that the main issue is leting all the 3 t2 servers fight t3/4 servers, most of the imbalanced matchups so far were one t2 server steamrolling t3/4 servers.

Even tho TC steamrolled DB and FA when they faced then I still think if there was to be a DBxTCxFA matchup it would still be balanced

Well…. it’s not like some people can say whether we like it or not, as we’ve had a total of 1 random matchup since this crap started.

I am unhappy about this and yet ANet is silent. They make me appreciate Riot Games and its openness so much more.

My server and me are absolutely thrilled and loving this new system. within the last 2 weeks and 1 day weve re-matched 2 server that we havent seen in months and are playing/have played 3 new servers that we have never played before. granted we aren’t always in 1st/2nd we arent doing that bad.

sure theres alot of complainers on the forums, ironically they are all part of the more populated severs where:

They move up 1 tier or 1 sever from the higher comes down- they get wrecked…. they whine and complain.

They go down or a server from below comes up…. they complete map due to other servers lack of coverage…..they whine and complain.

They stay in the same tier of similar servers that have the coverage to compete and put up an equal fight…..do they do something here? NOPE they whine and complain about lack of diversity

To be honest i never really understood this whole thing of transferring to a top tier in the first place….the enhancements are mediocre and little noticeable ( as they should be), A server that comes in 1st on tier 1 gets no bonus then a server that comes in 1st in t8,

or is it your trying to make up for alack of a certain something IRL to the point where youd rather afk login wvw to win…….i guess that explains all the whining though o.0

Good to know that matchup has been kind to your server. Now quit being so tunnel visioned and try looking at matchmaking from other people’s point of view where they have to face tier 2 servers while they are tier 5.
