The Warrior turns to the guardian and says, “Did you hear something?”
Guardian replies, “No, but how’d the elementalist die?”
I had thought for some time about making this post, for a couple of days in fact, knowing that some wouldn’t agree, but decided it is something we need to broach.
I’m talking in particular about the collapse of SoS and the subsequent transfer of people off of it. Before I continue let me be clear, SoS is a great server that I respect, it held the number 1 spot for many weeks, and many great people were responsible for this. No one can ever take that away.
In any event, as a WvW community we’ve come to a cross road now. That is, just prior to Free transfers closing, JQ stacked itself and made itself a formidable force. Initially JQ struggled, particularly over the weekends but it soon became apparent JQ couldn’t be stopped. JQ has recruited better than others and has now, much like SoS previously, placed itself in a position to win repeatedly.
As this became obvious a number of people left SoS. Why? Only they can tell you, but the reverberations are still being felt. It set a precedence and in turn other people may have thought for some time about it, ultimately some did in fact decide to leave. The symbolism of this was subsequently felt throughout the SoS community and in turn others left, a snowball effect. As I type this I’m aware of similar things happening within the EU WvW community.
Why is it an issue? Because free transfers have FINISHED.
People now have to use gems to transfer, some may have the gold to get the gems others may have to farm more, a percentage will have to use real money to purchase gems.
Why is this relevant? Because GW2 is designed to make money and by people using gems to transfer they have in turn undermined the WvW community by reinforcing that. Let me explain.
JQ was going to win, everyone could see that. With free transfers ended, it would be expected that JQ would win for a long time.
At that time, the pressure was on ArenaNet. If JQ was simply going to win forever and ArenaNet let it continue that way, with nothing but ppt to focus on then it would upset the community greatly. Now I guess what’s sad is that it would have taken time, weeks if not months for ArenaNet to do something. It’s no secret that the WvW community is placed far behind PvE and sPvP, there would be in no hurry to make changes.
However, that pressure and any immediacy with it is now significantly less, for 2 reasons.
1) The WvW community can ‘manage’ itself. If people are unhappy that JQ is winning or in the future BG, it’s ok. The community will start to transfer to a different server, that’s high population and within the same tier or one tier removed.
2) The business that makes the game makes MONEY. Anyone within that infrastructure that cared about JQ dominance, that wanted to address these issues and the future of WvW has had their influence undermined by the money that’s being made by transfers. The corporates will be standing back saying ‘OMG don’t change it, were making money, just leave it and see what happens. Why didn’t you stop free transfers sooner!!??’. Actually the worst case scenario is that they try and reinforce the transfer trend.
So that’s where we are at, nothing needs to change because we can use 1800 gems (very high server) which is just under 35g (adjusted) to solve our own problems.
At this point there’s nothing more to be said. If you didn’t think about the server you were on prior to free transfers closing, perhaps you should have, are things really THAT bad there, I don’t believe so. The server where you currently are is OK.
So we are now in the position of ‘do we use gems to transfer?’. If you care about WvW, don’t transfer. Think about server pride, about what fun means to you and how to win, without winning all the time should your server get less ppt than others and what that all means to ArenaNet.
If you have recently transferred, then be happy where you are. Place pressure on those that make the changes if you are unhappy sometime in the future. But don’t transfer, in the long run, the WvW community does not benefit, those that don’t care about WvW do.

Because F2P games don’t need your money.
Paid transfers are genius.
There is only so much pride someone can take in their server, when others don’t. When people talk of throwing matches to drop a tier because the one they are in is ‘too hard’, or the WvW guilds are all in dungeons, or if there is so much incompetence that your head feels like it’s going to explode… OR it stops being fun and you are seriously considering leaving the game – yeah – I’d say that would be grounds to parachute out of the burning plane that is your current server..
Why is this relevant? Because GW2 is designed to make money and by people using gems to transfer they have in turn undermined the WvW community by reinforcing that.
I stopped reading at that point… The game doesn’t make you transfer, you transfer by your own will, and it was the will of the guilds who left SoS (which still i don’t see why they did it). Now saying it’s Anet fault is one of the most idiotic thing i’ve read on this forum.
In fact everyone though that the bandwagons would end after the free transfer ended, but with the current situation of SoS, we see that isn’t true. Also, that show how pathetic that portion of SoS population was… Once it started losing, it collapsed… (Just as ET, HoD, IoJ, SBI).
Let’s just wish SoS luck wherever it will stop, because i’m sure Fergusson’s Crossing and Eredon Terrace situations are waaaaaaaaaaaaay more delicate than SoS’, and we don’t want another server in that situation. (although if SoS really colapse that bad, we might finally find the 3rd member of the bottom tier)
Man, people used their own money to play this game. We can’t force them to stay or go. It is their decision alone. It may hurt feelings, but. >3<

Yes, Blackgate is already enough of a bandwagon… Now we get a lot more of bandwagoners from the biggest of the old Bandwagons, ruining even more the old blackgate… I miss the days when we had no big guilds and the community was all around medium-small sized guilds helping each other.

What sucks if the transferees bring their ego, as if they’ll make the old server better.
OK, so essentially your wall of text is built around a couple very simple premises.
1. OP thinks that paid server transfers will ruin WvW. The logic is pretty much fail in that category.
2. Albeit in a very polite way, he/she is raging about apparently still being on the SoS Titanic as it continues it’s slow slide into the icy waters of the WvW community.
Now, I’m one of those folks who used to be on SoS and transferred out several weeks back. I can tell you absolutely why some people left, and it had nothing to do with jumping on a bandwagon. It had everything to do with having a little pride in your server. When you’re down 15k on Tuesday and you can’t raise much of any support in home borderlands that’s frustrating. When that trend continues for weeks on end, well you only have a few options left – transfer out, or resign yourself to the fact that a good portion of the WvW crowd are nothing more than frontrunners who lose interest the moment the outcome isn’t certainly in their favor.
All in all, paid transfers aren’t killing WvW. Get your head right.

GASP!!! A gaming company is making money ! OH NO! That means we can play their games and they won’t go belly up. Applaud! This guy knows nothing about economics. Guess what ANET NEEDS to make money. They do have bills to pay. The only problem is that server transfers should have ALWAYS been paid transfers.
But if I don’t transfer, how will me and my hardcore pvp guild get off the server that isn’t winning anymore and on to the next big thing?
I have no sympathy. SoS was bolstered by server xfers. Seems just t1 servers feel the pains lower tiered servers do.
This problem will fix itself eventually. These people have no loyalty and will eventually just leave GW2 for the next shiny OMG-inducing wowkiller.
OP post makes no sense!!!
Please people on top servers spread out more to all servers!
-To make weekly battles more challenging
-reduce queues
-reduce problems like culing and ability lag
Our guild changed to another server a few weeks ago.
Why:
-Because our server climbed up to tier 2 and the problems of high tier servers started, so we transfered to a server a few tiers lower.
-Because our server mentality changed because of all the bandwagenors joined before paid transfers. And people start playing for points except for nice battles.
-Because of queues or server got
-Because people wanted us to adept to another playstyle high tiers uses: blob up in large zergs of guild groups.
-because of the ability lag and lots of problems with culing in top tiers
On our new server we have lots of good fights without ability lag and almost no culing problems.
We have no queues and we can transfer between borders whenever we want.
There are lots of enemy guilds of the same size (20-30 people) that give us very good fights.
So transfering is bad? It made the game again worth playing.
Yes our server will probably never get to a higher tier.
But i prefer to play for good battles.
We dont have server pride?? Maybe(servers change: piken used to be a very unique server i was proud of).
But why being proud of a tier 1 server? Because they have better tactics? Better guilds? No being tier 1 only means you have a better 24/7 coverage… So you are proud on someone else its work(mostly the night teams)…
Players and guilds in high tiers only can win if they outnumber the enemy with a lot.
So personly i think being part of a high tier server means you have no skill.
And you are proud of a server full of bad players, abusing zerg tactics(ability lag, culing, getting to all crossed swords before they can get inside a tower/keep), and mostly are in high tier because they have a better night/morning team!

Transferring is not the smartest move in my opinion.
You’re paying ArenaNet to transfer all your characters to another server. And by the way that service used to free.
You could have simply bought another account and created new characters on your new home world. It’s about the same cost.
So you can stay in your old world and experience the new world at the same time.

Tell me how 20 dollars is the same as 60 dollars?
This game, like every other “F2P” game, uses your addictions in order to get you to spend money. It’s not even remotely as bad as other F2P games I’ve played like World of Tanks where you needed a “premium” account for 50% more XP/gold earning.
Free transfers (and Overflow + being able to play with people cross server) at the game launch was an intelligent move in order to prevent the “ghost town” server issue that plagued SWTOR and caused people to quit en masse.
Now it’s time to cash in. Nobody transfers alone, they transfer with their entire guild.
If you’re paying $60 to buy another copy of the game, you’re not getting the best deal. I’d post some links here but I’m not sure if there’s a rule against advertising low-priced copies of GW2 at certain very well-known web sites.
Anyway, the “special” seems to be $30 over the next two days. Happy treasure hunting.
So now I’m paying $30 to start all over with no characters vs. spend $20 to transfer my five level 80s? You are one smart consumer sir. Please come shop at my establishment any time. Oh, and for those of us who’ve made a little coin along the way, or who stockpiled gems when they were dirt cheap…. I’m not spending any money to transfer. Soooooo…. yeah

Very nice. Yes, someone is taking advantage of those players that are addicted to “winning” or “being competitive” etc.
Like my guildy said yesterday, “hope these players find a home someday”. Hehehe.
The fundamental flaw in this game is that to improve your server you do not get better, you do not play harder, you do not come up with new tactics, you get more people and you get more coverage. Really the game has become CoverageWars, and yet so many people are still driven by the PPT system and Tiers, like it maters, or means something.

I’ve jumped around my fair share of servers, but that’s because I don’t feel any real attachment to what server I’m playing on because Gw2Lfg + Overflow makes finding groups on ANY server easy.
Server home bases only come into play in WvW.

This is an interesting point, just this morning there was a Q for EBG, I dont remember an Oceanic Q ever in EBG and when I got in Kain was having fun with BG all around SM, a week ago there would be 5-15 of us trying to stop the bleeding enough or maintain our keep until Thai finally logged and evened things up. Now if theres a Q in EBG and Thai / Urge can’t get in who’s going to push Kain ( or future JQ) back to spawn.
On the other hand someone ( actually 2 servers) needs to attempt a fair match against JQ which should actually make T2 a little more competitive as well. From my understanding the reason the SoS’s transferred was because when JQ started rolling with all their transfers, many on SoS stopped logging into WvW, not sure exactly but I think their NA primetime numbers fell off drastically and WvW turned into a turkey shoot and we all know how fun wvw is when theres a few of you trying to keep up the good fight. The SoS guilds made the right move to BG if they wanted to de-throne JQ considering they knew better than anyone if SoS had “given up”
I remember many a morning getting on and finding a handful of us in spawn camp while in T1 staring at the breakout event commander wondering what he was going to accomplish against the 35 MERC standing on the right and the JQ stacked up in Veloka. We would try and sneek around and grab a tower or camp until Siegebreaker or Patzero/Thai or Orcommander or someone would finally show up and bring a few more souls with them, we all stuck with it because we figured once we dropped back down to T2 the scared little rabbits would scurry back to WvW once again. I’m not sure SoS saw it the same way since they spent so long at the top, maybe they figured their server had givin up.
It’s a tricky situation for sure, hopefully everything works out and T1 is actually fun this go around
the SoS community as a whole cared little about what happened in WvW except for the big guilds that defended in WvW. SoS WvW started falling apart after 2 guilds left because they couldn’t handle JQ which was weeks ago. This destroyed the morale of the rest of the SoS community. Our militia was nonexistent since they all hopped on JQ.
There was only one solution to this; Consolidate WvW guilds onto another server that shows promising tier 1 attributes. Sea of Sorrows is just a name. The WvW guilds in that server are what gave the carebears the world buffs and now they won’t get them anymore once they sink to tier 5.
Transfering to another server was the best thing to do instead of sitting on SoS and looking at JQ full capping because of numbers.
Which server will be the next to crash and burn?

Clearly the solution to this is to go to another server hoping to full cap because of numbers…?
Never mind the rating system designed to let your server fall to where it can compete if you lose some strength! Keep jumping servers, get angry at coverage, jump more servers, repeat. It’s a self-perpetuating problem. You guys have a good time hitting the transfer button and staring at the ppt board like it means something, we’ll be playing WvW down here in the minor leagues that are clearly not worth the time of superior hopping guilds.

I transferred to Blackgate for map completion. I now have a shiny star in my name
They have left SoS as they cant win on easy mode anymore. Its the same guilds that cant hack having to fight for a win and just want to cruise it. As soon as life on Blackgate gets too hard they will move again.
Which server will be the next to crash and burn?
I don’t think there will be more major colapses… But the next server that will suffer a huge exodus will be either SoR, which is composed by SoR+SBI (People who fled during the fall), or BG, which is composed by BG+SoS (People who fled during the fall). But knowing both SoR and BG core communities, their tenacity won’t allow such a long fall to the bottom.
Maybe JQ if for some reason it start losing? But then we will get Kaineng as the next T1 “Superserver” since it will be waiting quietly in the 4th position.

This. Hopefully they run out of those cheap gems that they claim they stockpiled and are forced to buy transfers to support their scrubby server jumping habits. I’d prefer, if they are going to continue to screw up WvW for all the other servers that they help keep Arenanet afloat by paying their bills.
To late , SOS is doomed , all the wvw guilds are moving , no reason to stay if you wvw
::Waves to Sea of Sorrows::
The trip down might be a little bit bumpy, but man when you settle somewhere I garuntee you wont miss tier 1.

JQ’s core kept them competitive even losing 9 weeks in a row. If all their bandwagoners left, that same core would still keep them competitive at a high level.
Shame the SoS guilds didn’t have even half that intestinal fortitude and could only survive 2 to 3 weeks without winning before giving up and fleeing.
Winning too easy is boring anyway… I joined JQ months ago when it was struggling to keep t1, that was more fun. I dont get why people just have to win without the challenge. I appreciate the guilds that made the effort to recruit for other time zones, since its annoying losing everything immediately when you log out, but aside from that I dont get team stacking.
Hang on a minute, aren’t we just playing a game here?
They have silly reasons for leaving. It is their money they are wasting.
I’ve been expecting this to happen ever since DB was gutted several months ago by transfers to SoS. I didn’t expect them to have to literally pay for it though :P
To late , SOS is doomed , all the wvw guilds are moving , no reason to stay if you wvw
This is not true.
There are a number of small and mid sized guilds that are sticking around.
You are correct in that if you are unable to deal with adversity, I would advise moving to BG or JQ.
But the guilds that are staying are actually quite fun to run around with and ZN has one of the best commanders I’ve found in the game.
Plus we have spies and naked asurans, and who doesn’t like that?

Don’t worry, if I see a HSSS player in WvW, I’ll make it a point to help them.
But thanks for your post. The melodrama is delicious.

Maybe JQ if for some reason it start losing? But then we will get Kaineng as the next T1 “Superserver” since it will be waiting quietly in the 4th position.
A BG collapse has been predicted for a long time, but I do not see it occurring anytime soon. Our community has been and continues to be quite stable.
SoS didn’t complain when guilds transferred to them, which left other tiers weaker, so you don’t have the right to complain when these same transfer guilds leave. Live by the transfer, die by the transfer.
Dragonbrand is now giving away cookies for transfers to server, next is low interest home loans.
Would love to see the current queues on w3 with just a little more talent in the commander department lol.
No. The Sea of Sorrow player community already claimed the [former] Dragonbrand transfers. After the players finish the Tier war they still need a place to call home. They know where it is.
Everyone should transfer to Kaineng.
Everyone should transfer to Kaineng.
Bad recruiting. I see cookies, I see low interest loans, I see naked asurans…what have you got?
I’m not from Kaineng, but I think that people should transfer there. Kainengs the best do it up.

Heck I was on SoS from the Beta till I saw where it was going. Home will be a server where the players feel that they’re having fun.
. ……resign yourself to the fact that a good portion of the WvW crowd are nothing more than frontrunners who lose interest the moment the outcome isn’t certainly in their favor…
And those are the ones that will transfer again and again and again….
Pride in your server doesn’t exist! WvW guilds will always want to be in the top tiers even if that means server hopping.
When SBI dissolved, the people that left were often the MOST hardcore players. They already sacrificed a lot of time for the server. But they were burnt out and got to leave. I don’t blame them.

Surprise. The direction changed. No stress. Better communication. Server events. Live music linking if you want it. New movie projects. A FIRE guild officer received 30 new recruits in a few hours.
Porky is happy judging from his/her post.
We’re still doing well-wishing and good-bye posts though…
