After watching “the video” (the presentation they streamed), for me it seems like an eotm +skyhammer+pve combo.

Ledges to knock enemies off.
Automated Turrets which shoots you.
Big Boom Cannon which destroys every enemy outer gate (basically opening every tower), so you can capture everything faster when you have superior numbers (timezones for da win!).
Keep Lord, which are.. “fun to fight”.
’Cos wvw players love to fight npcs, yup.

The map is nice, it’s beautiful, but.. I fear the mechanics will make it close to unplayable for me

Keep Lord, which are.. “fun to fight”. (Problem?)

I commend Anet for going through all the effort to making what looks like a gorgeous map with some interesting mechanics. Unfortunately for me it doesn’t solve the problem of being blobbed to death. Maybe they didn’t want to ruin the mood of the debut by announcing more than they needed to, but this isn’t enough to get me to come back. It’s just going to be more of the same with different scenery.

It forces people to try to get organised.

It also helps the defenders if they play correctly, The wind prison ability is the perfect time to nuke several people stuck within it. They can’t get ressed from downed.

You say WvW players love to fight npcs, Obviously sarcastically. The truth is though the ones who don’t, won’t fight them now but might fight them after. The ones who do will fight them now and after. It doesn’t actually change anything, you fight them now.

The only difference will be that the new lords will create more diverse lord room fights than before. That’s a good thing. However an organised group will focus defenders first or slot anti stealth skills.

I think it’s a big step in the right direction. They’re making objectives actually worth taking, Rather than just for points.

The ledges and stability changes, along with the new shield generator, create a lot more play in the map, especially in conjunction with the shrine mechanics. Position and situational awareness will matter more, creating the need to have some deeper planning and preparation than just running across the map from objective to objective.

Making the Keep and Tower Lords not simple encounters where the zerg nukes them down in 20 seconds increases play in fights around the lords, rather than making it so that the second the gates are breached a tower is pretty much dead, or so that a smaller defending force has an actual chance of holding a keep from a larger zerg even if they break through to the Lord. And it forces the zerg to play more skillfully rather than just auto attacking the lords down.

All of these changes seem geared at making things more competitive and requiring more thought on the part of attacking forces, and opening up more viable options in terms of tactics for the defense. That’s pretty unequivocally good; it shifts the balance away from being solely a numbers game toward being something where skillful coordination and planning matter more.

This needs to be play tested by over 200 person battles before the features are finalized. WvW is an entirely different game when you have more than a few dozen which is what it looks like they designed the map with.

The new PvE dynamic is way out of left field. We thought the hyleks or dredge were what we thought of as “PvE” in wvw and the community has had a gripe over that forever.

“But you don’t know what pain is!!!”

Thats how it feels. Now the PvE is something we have to deal with and cannot go around. Its not the immersive experience we were after, we can do that in Tyria. It attacks all objectives? what kind of damage are we talking about?

But most importantly, Why do the direct opposite of what the community asks for?? I mean I can understand a little different, but why specifically the direct opposite?

My problem is sure smaller forces can defend better now with the way keeps/towers are setup, but if its so laggy due to map capacity being so large and every1 blobbing, then really those defenses arent going to help. They need to fix populations and then these changes might actually be noticable. If maps held only 60 people instead of the 100 it can now, it would make it so tiers 3, 4, 5, and maybe 6 actually be playable and balanced.

Why on earth would they remove all the alpine borderlands? Thats insane. Those maps are amazing for open field encounters and roaming. Removing it makes me seirously think Anets agenda is actually against fighting other people in this game. This is such a huge stupid mistake from them. If its just one map being added in, then it would make sense.

This makes zero sense though. Especially with how objective heavy this new map sounds that I feel will be a lot like EOTM where there are no real good spots to fight people without being interrupting by cannons or some other BS.

If an Anet dev is reading this, tell me. WHY are you so objected to people enjoying fighting each other??? Im so stumped a with what your problem is. Is it against what you think WvW should be? Not fighting each other because thats not objective based?

You know very well that PPT itself means nothing but is merely there to create other things like cool encounters, sieges, long lord fights, or even open field fights. NO WvW vet out there actually goes into WvW thinking they can beat a server who has more coverage than them, NONE. Its about the experience, not winning, because you cant, because your scoring system is broken and we’ve all told you 10 millioin times.

I fail to see how racing to kill dinosaurs to grab power cores and bring them back to camps while avoiding being killed by other players so they can steal those items and turn them in themselves is some PvE style event. They’ve said the dinosaurs are very easy to kill, to the point where zerging to deal with that event is super inefficient so that should tell you something; the difficulty isn’t in the pve side of the equation, it’s in dealing with the players running the power cores. Think part race part capture the flag, and still very much focused on the player competition aspects and not mindlessly hitting dumb AI. It only starts looking like a PvE event if no one contests the capture, but that’s not any different than what happens if no one contests you taking a keep or a tower either, so…

And the cannon blows up the outer gate of all enemy held structures; so towers will be left with no gates and keeps will have their inner gates left alone.

I got the impression that the new map will actually be BETTER for fighting against each other. Mainly due to it breaking up massive zerg-balls that runs around in the current ones.

Also keep in mind that they did seem to imply that they will put it on rotation at some point after release, so we will most likely get the old borderlands back now and then as well.

This is indeed bad news, but I was expecting it already. Excessive amount of choke points and places to fall to your doom (or fear/launch etc your enemies) is nothing to cheer about. Nor the addition of gimmick mechanics.

It seems Eternal Battlegrounds will be the last good WvWvW map in this game. And the lag on that map, sighs…

Actually it is quite usual for devs (especially in MMOs) to remove stuff, I would actually say that most do it.

It is also a big sad to see people rage without actually checking the information first.
They made it rather clear that it will not be removed permanently but rather be put into rotation a while after release. But I suppose that doesn’t matter?

I sometimes think the people who say every change anet is doing to wvw is “pve” have never really played pve or just love making strawman arguments like children. WvW seems to have become this idea that it is ONLY supposed to be open-world pvp but, as far as I remember it, it was always marketed as a balance between pve and pvp. Anet’s plan may just be to try to entice more people into the game mode since it is insanely boring right now unless you are in a guild.
And I love how eotm is constantly bashed when I can legitimately say that the first 2 weeks of that map’s release were the funnest wvw I’ve ever done and I’ve played since beta . The fact that the points never truly mattered is what started killing the game mode and the death knell came when pve’s discovered the karma loot and started abusing it.

I fail to understand WHY Arenanet developers are doing this, unless they think every player and his uncle enjoys trolling. We already have EotM which has excessive amount of ledges to launch off other players (perfect for trolling), abundant amount of choke points (horrible for solo roamers to move around the map unnoticed), powerful NPCs, automatic turrets and so on. So instead of having EotM, we seem to get “EotM 2.0” in the form of the new desert borderlands. Not to be completely negative, I think it will be better than the current EotM, which is so bad in so many ways, I don’t want to repeat myself.

My logic is:
Those people who like EotM map design, can always go to EotM. Thus that map caters those who like such. There is no need for more of the similar. And there is absolutely no reason to turn WvWvW into more pve alike experience, as this game as pve content for those who want that. There is even a pve desert alike map at the Dry Top with tons of annoying ledges to fall and jumping puzzle alike mechanics, which distract the core game play heavily (plus that map zone seems to be mostly vacant from players as well, should be a hint, majority players don’t like it).

Developers should be more transparent and honest. Everybody makes sometimes mistakes. Smart people learn from their mistakes and admit them publicly. Now it is dead obvious that the earlier borderland changes with the bloodlust and replacing lake with ruins were a fail. That area has extremely few human players (even less than the lake had), all the most interesting fights happen outside the ruins area. Such map design simply doesn’t work well for WvWvW. Even the guild vs guilds (gvg) audience and dueling (1 vs 1) people choose to fight somewhere else.

Now let’s see when the map is, when it is actually released as I understood it is still being worked on and HotT will be released much later this year, maybe in summer 2015.

Settle down. The new BL map will be on rotation with the old BL map in the future. Of course the new map will see a ton of play time for months on end when the expansion is released. Look for Anet to keep things fresh by rotating in the old BL map and possibly improving upon the old BL map when it is out of the rotation. I assume Anet will continue to create new BL maps going forward as well as new EBs. All will be rotated in and out. Hopefully into the game’s future we will have BLs and EBs rotated in and out on consistent basis. What is not to like about that?

I disagree with some people here, I think this map will be amazing for roamers and small groups. I guess time will tell.

i really have no idea whether I’ll like this or not. i honestly cant tell from the vids. i like the aesthetics, but i can only hope they made the objectives and PPT fun and rewarding. otherwise no one will play. i don’t mind playing a more RTS-like map, but again…it needs to be fun and rewarding.

so while i am willing to give it a chance of course, i cant say i understand the reasons for the design choices. the devs are not giving the community what they’ve been asking for (gvg support and open field combat). this map will also make GvZ raids either silly or impossible. for many people i believe, this is the end of WvW. for me, im willing to try something new…

asymmetric map for competitive fights? works not on oetm and will never work!

You want straight up PvP? Hit spvp or organised GvG’s or duels.

EOTM is NOTHING like the new map. You can literally be knocked off from virtually anywhere. Not only that but your sent back to spawn and EOTM serves no score in your matchup.

I could argue that you STILL have EBG up all the time and the rotation of the old map. Stop whining and l2play. The only realistic complain anyone could have about this map and it’s mechanics is if your one of the braindead people who like to blob up and “Stack” because clearly they set this map up purely to stop that.

Why can’t you? If you avoid it now i assume you don’t capture objectives. Who said you HAVE to capture objectives when the new map comes?

I think thats what they’re trying to avoid, had you not noticed. They don’t seem to want you to join an unorganized blob of 100 players. They’re TRYING to change that mentality without punishing you.

Yeah there is. Don’t get me wrong theres no 50man zergs or mapwide server lag. That’s one of the reasons i move here though (When they was very bottom.)

I also moved to piken but as someone who mainly plays EB most of my roaming fights turned into zerg fights quite quickly so i got bored and moved back. There also seems to be a lot more “Cheese” build roamers up there when i was there.

I liked the old map actually, yet after seeing the trailer, I’m really interested in the new BL.

What would be awesome is that new maps come afterward, to give each server a different taste (just like EB where keeps change for each side).

It’s a bit sad to leave the place I’ve been “living” in for nearly 2 years (I’m a late WvW player), but since it will probably break the massive zergs… BRING IT ON!

Anet give a s…t on what the wvw communtiy was looking for and releases eotm/cancerhammer 2.0 for ther casual/pve/ppt hereos .

asymmetric map for competitive fights? works not on oetm and will never work!

This presantation destroy my last hopes about wvw in gw. So hope anet not destroy pvp until cu headstart.

hey, like im sorry to break this to you man but CU is about 2.5-3 years away. the plans they’ve advertised are mere fantasy atm, as they’ve made very little tangible progress. so what’s the point of even fantasizing about it? im looking forward to CU as well, but it will be a long while before it’s ready.

The map actually looks fun but I’m not sure how it will feel for solo roaming. It looks a bit too chaotic for that. I think slower classes will find this map to be a bit rough depending on how all the different terrain works. ON the other hand, once you know the terrain I feel like it will be a lot easier to get away or catch people if they don’t pay attention. Secret passages? Heck yeah.

Not sure how I feel about the shield generator though. I feel like it will be too powerful if you are not facing organized groups.

The keeps look like they will be a lot easier to defend which will be awesome if you are outnumbered on defense.

And in the closing video, 34 minutes in to the whole thing, it looks like a … cow? … gets trebucheted at a wall.

The map certainly looks fun.
But I am a little afraid that all those environmental factors may exaggerate the population imbalance problem.
Most of those powerful buffs will be claimed by the side with more people and make it even harder for the side with less number.

Ok, for someone who had a chance to watch the live stream today, they are replacing the old boarderlands with this one, but are the removing all 4 maps and putting this in, or are they putting this in place of each boarderland, so we will have 3x the new map and EBG on top of that??

The new map looks great, its hard to tell how big it is from the previews, the new event in the middle I think will be better for open field battles.

One of the biggest complaints ive seen on the forums about WvW over the last 2 years is lag, the new map has mechanics in it that just look like they will promote heavy lag, and unless you have an excellent computer you maybe struggling real bad in battles.

Colin has stated in an interview that the new borderlands WILL BE accessible to those that do not buy HoT.
