Quit GW2 almost a year ago because I hated mindless zerging and seemingly pointless WvWvW.

My desire for open world PvP, however, has been rekindled. Was wondering if there were any changes made over the past year that would psyche me up to return to GW2.

Five out of seven days are spent karma training where the zergs try to avoid each other and take undefended objectives. The other two days you get to sit in queue for hours on end hoping to get in before the commander you want to follow logs off. If you do manage to actually get in and a big fight starts up you get to deal with skill lag.

If none of what I said bothers you WvW might be for you.

That doesn’t happen in EU. The train, not the queues … Although the queues EU side seem to be improving. Believe that’s happening NA side as well?

They fixed culling. Many people said it would never be done but they were wrong.

Now they just have to work on optimizing the game and fixing the lag.

They didn’t “fix” culling per se, they just got rid of it. “Fixing” it let you see a lot more players, but it also increased the lag.

I came back 2 weeks ago after a 2-3 months break and WvWvW seemed to me quite improved. The most important thing they did is the party priority regarding buffs and buffing. It completely put wvwvw in a whole new level. Organized guild raids have now a purpose. It’s not “mindless” anymore.
Of course blobbing is still present and will always be, but as a small (20+) guild group you have GREATER chances of winning in situations in which you are outnumbered.

Frenk, thank you. You answered a question I had about fields and buffs that no one replied to in your response.

I don’t think it put wvw at a whole new level so much as it forced it a baby step forward. Forcing people to group in an organized fashion is not a ‘whole new level’. Quality players were doing this already, it just means we do not have to avoid others as much.

As for the original question, it really depends on what scale you like to play (blobs, zergs, small man, solo), imo.

We still have blobs. The game still encourages and rewards blobbing or zerging in every aspect of the game. So nothing is different in that regard. The vast majority of the players still fall within this category.

The biggest change would be at the 20-30 man range. The GvG crowd has really pushed some improvements in this area creating more organized zergs rather then mindless blobs. So if you like the 20-30 man range I would say things have improved, but in my opinion it is still a pretty faceroll level of game play with a few notable exceptions.

Small man groups, 5-10, I would say is pretty much exactly the same as always with few equal size opportunities.

To me it feels like there are more people soloing, but it varies so much server to server and matchup to matchup, that it is hard to say that with any certainty.

Skill laag is a pain. No incentives except a chest we ll get in 6 weeks.

You can still have fun in a Omega zerg.

We are getting more organized vs. tier 1 servers and having fun with that. It is intense but very engaging. Lots of f words on Mumble, but it is good stuff as far as learning how the game works. Zerg looks way different from a blob when each player has a role that needs perfect timing and movement.

I think two styles of play have developed in WvW that are most fun. Organized guild groups in 20-30 people, and small groups (1-3 people) roaming around. The addition of the ruin area on borderlands with the point on stomp mechanism really adds more fun and purpose for small group roaming.

So you will still see blobs, but a lot of times (especially on organized servers) these are not mindless zergs but rather highly cooperated groups communicating on server TS.

As for pointless WvW, it depends on what server you are on. If you are on the top servers in each league (in NA, like T1 on gold or FA/SBI on silver), the WvW is not pointless as the whole server community is trying their best to win their respective league. I know a lot of people are doing overtime just to win. So if you are on one of those servers and join the server community, it’s hard to not get motivated. However, if you are on one of those bottom servers in each league, I guess the feeling is quite different.

it depends on the server that you are on, in short it’s very unbalanced, either your server outnumber the others or you are being outnumbered.

You have to understand in NA, two servers actually coordinate tower/keep flipping/location on map, so the enemy will find it vacant —- just to flip for loot like that Queen Jenna Pavillion, or the Orr karma trains.

Ah well there’s no coordinated for map cycling. It’s more like blobs that are totally unorganised that will just PvD and steamroll small groups. Still karmatrains in any case. :P

Ques are the issue now. If you run solo it shouldn’t be too bad. If you like to que as a guild then you’ll have trouble getting together. Even if everyone ques together at the same time you don’t get pops in a reasonable time frame.

RUN! Run as fast as you can!

A lot of people like to think they’re not karma training, but blobbing up and further taking the path of least resistance and rolling over everything yields the same results, the former is no better than the latter. They removed the culling but that only allows you to better see the glaring population imbalances. Mindless zerging still very much a thing in GW2.

Well, their are karma trains, especially during the off hours coverage. But, even in some of the lopsided matches, you still can have some pretty good fights during prime time. I guess, that depends on the match as well.

EB usually always has good fights during prime time.

I don’t think you understand how much that change implies. People were already doing this, but before the prioritization it was just useless:

“Hey, look at me, I’m a shouts warrior! I will heal my buddy who’s going to die in the middle of the zerg and save his life! YAY!”
NOPE. You have just healed a random guy, or a guy of your guild who didn’t really need your heals.

Now it’s different. Everybody has a role, it’s not random anymore, people organize their parties in order to get stability all the time, in order to get healed constatly, to get their conditions removed etc etc. This was NOT possible before. Now tell me that this isn’t an incredible improvement and I will just laugh at you and stop writing.

It’s not fun anymore. The league has utterly spoiled it. Implemented before WvW’s core problems were addressed, and has only served to exacerbated them.

Stay away. There’s nothing worthwhile there, and won’t be for some time.

I’d say try it out and see if you’d want to stay.

Your only shot at enjoying it is on a bronze tier server, like Sorrow’s Furnace if you aren’t in NA and aren’t a solo roamer.
