Do you remember the times:
- When building wp in garry during Friday reset night was something special
- Holding garry for entire mu was server pride
- One or several guilds running to defend north towers when scouts where screaming for help, usually map respond was hold it for next 10-15 sec and we are there
- Ques on enemy borders and no open tag only guilds running closed raids there
- Preparing home border every day for prime time so we could have epic battles that lasted 30-60 min in hills or bay, sometimes even more
- Open guild raids on every border on reset night
- All salt on black forums between guilds, commanders and fanboyz
- Borderlands filled with enemy roamers who did sniping and havoc

I could go on but for me that where the times of guild wars when guilds fought and respected each other when you saw 2 guild fighting and you would not disturb their scrim but rather w8 for your turn.

For me commanders are the fuel for WvW and are the once that bring and keep players in wvw and on teamspeak if they leave the game wvw will become k-train only.

PS: I did lot of commanding in T1 EU before but perhaps only 10 hours in HoT something just don’t feel right

Ah the good old days.

I still remember a 3 hour battle in garrison, all 3 servers involved with full zoneblobs. Constant battle, no rest, lord must have been ressed 50+ times. At the end, we where too physically exhausted to continue fighting.

Good times, I used to do everything, and I mean everything in wvw… zerg, roam, scout, havok, map hop, follow different groups. I loved the diversity of gameplay and that I could always jump in anytime to play, 2am on a thurs oh yes there were fights even if scores werent close.

Now…I simply dont care anymore, reset night change made fridays dead, the garbage gimmicks they added irritate me to no ends, the desert bl is a broken waste of time, there is no reason to care. Now I just pretty much have a small window of time to find any activity, and if not going with my guild, Ill just check eb after a queue ofc, the desert bl’s dont have queues often but heck they are usually dead and being ktrained.

I say what needs to be said, get used to it.

WvW is collapsing from the weight of malaise. The WvW community is suffering from depression and needs an injection of passion and life! Think of all the things that symbolize a flourishing life and that’s what’s needed in WVW. An arid desert is certainly not it

lol that is really true. Its almost like ANET knew WvW was gonna die with the new BL… no life, no activity… just a barren desert.

Yeah I remember.

I also remember when hundreds of competitive WvW guilds were recruiting players prior to launch, across all servers.
Or when hundreds of players would line up at the portals in Lion’s Arch right before reset occurred, and people would curse wildly in comms if they got stuck in queue.
Or when you would have massive 3-way fights at north camp over the orb, and they’d continue along the roads all the way down to the keeps.
Or when you’d be playing on maps and it was regular to see 5-6 sets of orange swords (not sure if they changed the player req. or just more people ran in guild groups back then).

I also remember when ArenaNet had a good reputation as a developer, and players in WvW had faith that they would put resources into supporting and improving the best RvR game on the market, rather than ignore key issues for 3+ years and watch it die a painful death as it hemorrhages players and guilds.

Those were the days. I feel bad for players that missed the first year of WvW. It had a ton of issues (culling, orb hacking, glitched queues, free transfers etc) but the playerbase was passionate and the fights were intense and a ton of fun.

I agree. I think part of it though is the stability nerf, causing 75%+ of commanders to quit the game.

I think the best thing they can do is go old school. Push the button in the attachment. Pop out the cartridge, blow in it, pop it back in and go in the complete opposite direction as they have been over the past 3 years. And they need to stop relying on gimmick mechanics. They’re pretty much Anet’s crutch at this point, and they’re not helping anything at all, ever. The maps need to have a strategic flow to them, and the areas need to have some form of synergy. They need to get rid of their failed attempts at a center area replacement, and bring back the orbs. Change the buffs on them so they don’t cause snowballing, and ban the hackers.

All WvW really needed at launch was a tiny bit of tinkering and then just regular maintenance. They didn’t do the necessary tinkering. They ignored what was broken, and broke what was fine. And never bothered with any of the maintenance. So we went from having a shiny new sports car, to having a broken down, rust bucket.

I hear you, Hap. And it was nice you were commanding short time on Deso BL this reset. Unfortunately no good fights, enemy outnumbers us greatly. Thus Desolation is no longer “very high” population server, but only “high”. The only “very high” servers in EU are: Baruch Bay, Jade Sea and Seafarer’s Rest.

The best thing Arenanet could do is give us the original maps back and revert many of the changes e.g. get rid of banners and auto upgrades (supply & human interaction should be required).

I simply don’t think that will happen. Instead they will be force feeding us that abomination called desert borderland and think that gimmicks like those banners make the game mode more “fun”. They think “let’s just give more time, players will adjust” and they are too blind to see that the player base is bleeding badly and many moved to other games.

How deso managed drive away thousands of f2p players. I was little bit scared when deso got 90% of f2p players that they might get more gold medals that i have, but i still have 73 gold medals more. Let’s just hope that anet reward me one day.

TBH im still convinced we can get used to the new maps, if they re-design them a little. The oasis event could also become a nice fighting-pit but everything else (auto-upgrades, these moron-banners) is a total mess.

sure. when will that happen? 2017? srsly even with the small team they have for WvW they should have been able to get some kitten done faster, obviously anet is pulling people from the WvW to do PvE

It’s because you’re left with just Pugs on Deso now, I don’t even think I saw a single raid from other guilds who could bring together 10 players (AIM/IRON) and then there is EB. That is the state of Deso, the only thing that kept Deso from dropping, is Night capping.

The maps won’t change a thing, people fail to adapt (blob mentality) and Anet needs to bring some changes to their border, the mechanics and merge populations somehow. Everything about wvw got stale and the meta got worse. (no surprise, cause they don’t balance for WvW)

Those were the good days. Friday night resets, seeing the same roamers everyday and having a large hammer train guild. I remember hitting Gold Knight 2 years ago and getting the 3rd zap to drop for me while roaming. I remember the server vs server threads provided interesting entertainment outside of the match-ups.

I remember a lot of discussion on how to improve wvw and now the WvW forums have died down. Still reverting back to Alpine Bl will not bring a lot of players back. I am looking for something that will make people excited to player wvw, not a minor improvement (stuff that A-net should have done years ago) but a major one that will make players say WOW this is awesome.

I remember when my guild would put together fun zerg busting groups that were actually successful, because the game used to be in a state that rewarded skilled well thought out play. I think it started to go down hill when the Rapid Fire buff came in in conjunction with the change to stability that massively empowered the zergs and just shut down small roaming groups completely, resulting in tiresome pirate ship battles as all the other classes realised it’s better to just stand far away lobbing ranged attacks. Then the specialisation update happened and balance was thrown out the window by allowing most classes access to too many offensive and defensive traits at the same time, rendering the original well designed class strengths and weaknesses, that are a fundamentally important part of “learning” the game, redundant. The nail in the coffin was the expansion which just exacerbated these major balance issues and brought with it Coalescence of Ruin which has ironically ruined the game mode.

Then you’ve got all the tedious gimmicks added to WvW, like Iron Will on guards/lords and -75% damage to siege (just awful) plus those banners that just ruin battles. Then there’s the new map, that’s just full of annoyances – barricades to prevent roamers getting around (does nothing to hinder zergs), loads of dead ends and winding paths that take you out of the action (major pacing issues – poorly designed), a central PvE event that just empowers zergs and causes massive lag issues and auto-upgrades that removed all meaning from a game mode that thrives upon player-player interactivity (where’s the drive for taking an objective, if you know nobody had a part in its upkeep?).

Luckily the auto-uprade thing is being addressed. But issues with WvW are so entrenched now that I’m not sure Anet could convince all the people that left to return.

“Server pride” died within months of launch because it was a one-way relationship.

Maybe there are not that much server pride anymore. But I know a lot people that play GW2 for their server. For sure when I say server, I’m talking about the community built around it and not simply the PPT and servers ranking. For sure server pride can only carry a game for so long, if the gameplay becomes so bad that you can’t stand it anymore… The community start to suffer as a whole since people don’t log as often or simply decide to quit the game…

Remember those morning connecting to the server teamspeak and conversing with some lads you barely knew a few months ago? Remember that British commander speaking with his followers (I often imagined him as King Arthur from Monthy Python)? Remember the Canadian folk and his too many ’’I’m sorry I did not mean to interrupt you speaking’’? Remember that Australian who swears without any evil intention but simply out of habits? Remember that… Well I do and those are what made me stay on GW2 and my server for longer than I would of if not for that great community ^^.

Miss the good old days :’)

I remember, and yeah they will be gone forever most likely. I have been chatting with my friends about this often.

The times when we made special team builds and defended a tower or camp against a blob with 5-10 guildies. We once fought for the Greenvale “Headquarter” starting at noon, ending late evening, killing groups from both opposing servers. The times when we rallied to our server commander and fought three way battles in the field or in stonemist. The times we coordinated with other guilds on the server to strike different objectives on maps. The times we skrimmed against other havok teams, battles flowing all over maps.

Ahhh glorious old school WvW. How much it has changed now.
