It may be lame sometimes but it really is that easy to counter.
Use siege weapons, well of corruption and feedback bubbles.
Sorry but with no prior warning siege is not a valid counter. Its not applicable in most situations. Feedback bubbles do work to a particular extent and as a mesmer is currently my biggest spike in loot bags :p But alas does not take down any more than a handful if I’m lucky. Considering we’re seeing numbers in the 30’s and 40’s it takes seconds for revives to go around.

Yes yes it is a valid counter. I’m of the mind that everyone should at least carry rams and arrow carts. Personally I carry everything aside siege golems all the time (although I have a golem atm). It takes 30 supply for a ballista or arrow cart… you literally need 2 other people to listen to your request to put their supply into it. If you’re moaning about anything in WvW you’d better at least be someone who carries supply. From supply camps (shock horror)!
As there is no siege aoe cap you hit EVERYONE for like, 5k damage. If you’re organised 3 ballista’s isn’t even that much of a stretch frankly and then you can just about one shot the entire turtle.
we were using this since the first weeks of wvw. this is not a new tactic and done by many. Why people started to complain after 3 months.
The first time I saw a turtle my impression was “how could Anet have overlooked such a basic flaw in WvW”. There are ways to overcome the damage from siege weapons in a turtle, so saying “siege” is no solution.
Here’s a thought: why doesn’t the turtle tactic work in other WvW type PvP games?

Really, I love meeting turtles. Your tanks can soak the damage, your ranged can wipe them.
As others said, many options to wipe turtles:
1. Siege.
2. Feedback (spec it for confusion)
3. Null Field (spec it for confusion)
4. AoE dmg, you will hit max all the time.
Probably lots more! This is just from a Mesmer perspective! Just look at your skills and how you can lock down and wipe a small area!
What kind of turtles are you all coming across, in Tier 1 EU we literally have moments where instead of decent multi-player combat we have entity fighting. I mean statistically it makes sense but this is a game I personally play for fun not to become part of the system to achieve a goal or number.
Your talking 30-40 people stacked (half of which you cant see battering each other) until someone makes a mistake.
There is no AOE cap for siege? Pretty sure that’s untrue, don’t mistake multiple ticks of bleeds/conditions as extra numbers i know arrow carts still only tick 5 people per damage tick. Its the same as everyone else’s aoe’s… you can only hit 5 people per tick but can hit multiple targets and still doesn’t resolve the issue.
This is easy to fix remove cap from aoe
