What started the WvW decline
Coverage kills wvw.
Keep Waypoint kills wvw.
The thought wvw is pve kills wvw.
Ascended gear kills wvw.
No tactic kills wvw.
The line between spvp and wvw kills both.

The Arrow Cart patch and the introduction of masteries……orbageddon…..removing the matchup forums…..the announcement of Leagues, and then the announcement of a SECOND League. Anet did everything it could to really screw up WvW’s lifespan.

The game honestly needs a WvW over haul patch because WvW >>>> sPvP
You are the delusional one…or you are probably like the majority of people who think zerging requires skill.
Show me where a PvP player hurt you.
I stopped WvW after I listened into some discussions on planning who was getting what place this season in tier 1 on TC mumble. Tier 1 season 2 was staged from start to finish. It wasn’t a fight, it was just trying to maximize how much prize tickets Anet had to pay out. Literally nothing else to it. Shocking twist: the plan I heard proposed on week 1 is exactly how the season played out. Not exactly interesting unless you’re more entertained by middle school math texts than The Silmarillion.
Guess it’s not really shocking since Anet’s long game for keeping WvW alive was adding virtually (or literally) impossible to earn achievements. Don’t think WvW will ever really work in GW2 until they take a closer look at the system they took so much inspiration from. If Anet wanted an arcade shooter on rails version of world PVP they should have designed their own system. There’s a lot of things they chose to ignore from RvR that really hurts the experience and is keeping any actual fighting from ever happening. Here’s just a few things that stand out to me:
In DAoC RvR levels much more meaningful, you actually gained a bit of character power instead of being able to carry 5 more boards and set doors on fire.
Structures and sieges had considerably more health. In DAoC they were literally hundreds of time higher than they are in GW2. This made sieging a structure feel like sieging a structure, and not knocking on a door for 45 seconds to get 20 silver of salvage.
Really my biggest problem with WvW is how realm match ups work and how they are so easily influenced by the players. There’s no war when the enemy is usually just the loot pinata you picked. Take away the player influence in match ups and you take away the reason to collude with the enemy to fix match ups. Fluid realm match ups just sours the whole pot, shows that Anet will never consider WvW serious content. They seem afraid their players couldn’t handle real pixel wars. In their design the real conflict is trying to game the system, not trying to game the enemy.
The only thing I think they got spot on was EotM, reminds me a lot of Darkness Falls from DAoC except no one loses access so there’s a lot more chance of running into big old zerg fights of PVErs vs PVErs, which is endlessly amusing.
I know it doesn’t show from most of my posts, I actually like GW2, at least the GW2 that released in 2012; that is, the game with potential.
I bought the game understanding it was very casual. Especially PvE. I think that casual feel was carried over into WvW as well. It’s easier to get into, there aren’t long wait times (haven’t had over a 10 minute at most queue since last year), players can easily PuG just by showing up. You can bust into a keep/tower and cap it so easily that 2 to 4 people can do it in under 5 minutes. Five to six players can easily defend a keep from a zerg. Everything is fast and easy, like microwave dinners. I know, hardly good selling points for old-timers, especially those of us from DAoC.
However, that’s the just way most games have gone these days. And GW2 more than most.
Your post raised some good points. Especially regarding “meaningful”.
I agree ANet copied the RvR concept but missed defining details.
(edited by goldenwing.8473)
WvW is still quite active on the top tier servers, there are some things i dislike personally and some things i truly long for from the DAoC days.
This game has no character progression, WvW has no new titles, no skins specific to achievements, no cool funky abilities you could save up for and buy like DAoC. I remember when i got both BoF(Barrier of Fortitude) and DI(Divine Intervention) on my Cleric and felt like i could really hold up my group when they were under some serious pressure. It was something to aim for, save up my points i earned and buy.
in GW2 once you pick up the 2 stack boosts (rank 230 i believe), that’s it. No cool abilities to throw into the fray, no cool skills to unlock to help your group out, etc, just some crap about picking up supply faster or doing more dmg with siege. Because standing on a wall clicking a couple buttons on the siege im manning is amazingly mind blowingly fun(sarcasm very much so intended).
Ranks dont mean anything in this game, you plow over a mithral just the same as a bronze. This brings me to my next point, way too many rewards for blobbing, in DAoC an objective was worth a set amount of points. You used 10 people to take that objective the reward was divided between those 10 players. You used 50 to do that same task then the reward was divided by 50. This rewards the skilled players that managed to do the task with 10 more points than the group that did it with 50. This game has no such system, might as well bring the whole map to take 1 thing. And then just roam that blob all over the map capping objectives, welcome to the K-train.
Not to mention the terrible rallybot system, very little reward for co-ordinated small group play. No Anet i dont want to join that 40 man zerg, lag all over the place and push 11111111111111111. The group with the superior numbers doesnt need the combat mechanics to hold their hand, they already have a numerical advantage.
It’s a case of a fast paced, action based combat system built around small group play(sPvP) that was piggy backed into another game mode(WvW). And it shows, this game really does shine in small group combat of closely matched numbers, the downed state isnt too bad in such scenarios and brings in some decent counterplay. But this mechanic leans heavily in favor of numbers, the more people you bring the better.
The borderlands are identical and small, at least in DAoC you had a sense of different cultures when you moved between Midgard, Hibernia & Albion RvR maps. The maps gave you a real chance to stretch your legs and maneuver around. In GW2 a zerg can reach just about anywhere on the borderlands in 1-2 minute, gg.

1. Elitist and unwelcoming guilds
2. Removal of match-up forum
3. In case of NA: too big gap between tiers. In case of EU: too many huge migrations from server to server causing an already very well balanced region to become far too unbalanced. Certain servers are now rising to tiers they do not want to be in.
4. Lack of a LS that engages you as a player. Yes, the lack of an engaging and challenging LS to fall back on when burning out has made many players quit the game entirely rather then just taking a break.
5. Its exams time. April to july always see a large reduction of players as people start prepping for their finals
Currently @ some T1 server in EU
well if you join desolation, you will see that there are a lot of open and welcoming guilds lol.
WvW is like a public park.
All are welcome to come and they can do what they like there, as long as it isn’t illegal.
But the public (the players) aren’t in charge of maintaining the park, the government or local councils employ people or businesses (ANet) to maintain public places.
If a public park is left to its own devices, it goes down a steady decline, until it is a huge mess and effort to clean up (WvW). The grass grows long. The bins overflow and rubbish is every where, in bushes, on the walk ways, in the rivers. Fallen tree branches are left on the ground as safety hazards. There might even be a dead body or two somewhere.
And this is what has happened to WvW. The ones who are in charge of maintaining it, ANet, have let it decay into a state of disrepair since August 2012.
If things get really bad, the public (the players) usually writes letters of complaint (suggestions in the wvw forum) to the local council to get a company (ANet) to keep the public space maintained, since that is what they’re being paid to do.
Except ANet refuse to transform WvW from a neglected dump to something that doesn’t hurt the eyes, and instead focus on keeping the PvE-only Zombies happy in their green pastures and rainbow skies.
PvP modes are the “endgame” in every MMO.
Stop failing at PvE, start fixing PvP/WvW. Thank you.
There are so many options that ANet could investigate that could change things up in WvW. These include:
1) Allowing server transfers for PvE purposes, but blocking players from entering WvW (at the very least while seasons are active).
2) Altering the loot table so that less loot is dropped when participating in huge zergs. It’s ridiculous that there are loot bags galore when one giant zerg wipes out a smaller zerg. When WvW was first announced, I imagined people roaming everywhere, not stacked up in one giant army.
3) Get rid of the pretty! WvW is supposed to be a warzone for goodness sake. Once again, when WvW was first announced, I imagined long open spaces with charred terrain, bits and pieces of broken siege equipment lying everywhere, barbed wire barricades and more variety. The maps are simply too symmetrical for my liking.
4) Add new mechanics, or change up the current ones. Why not make blueprints more expensive, but movable? Force us to escort flame rams from one location to another, for example. Add more things for people to do if they feel like roaming on their own, apart from capping ruins and supply camps (for those who can solo them). I hate the fact that there’s almost nothing for me to do if I log in and there isn’t a commander leading the charge. Why can’t I assist by building destroyable barricades (with a limit to the number that can be built)?
5) Encourage server pride. I think it’d be pretty cool if we could customize the likes of towers and keeps more. Why can’t we decorate them with emblems, erect flags and other things that add some identity to what are faceless buildings?
There’s so much that could be done, but it feels like WvW hasn’t gotten much love at all since its inception.
The long decline happened over a lengthy period of neglect regarding the most important WvW issues: Population & Night-caps
Arenanet did a grand total of N O T H I N G to address either of these over the nigh-on-two-year period since release, and despite having had a plethora of suggestions, they haven’t even hinted that they even spent any time at all thinking about any of them.
I am of the belief that the all of the passionate WvW devs were the temporary ones that all MMOs fire just pre-release.
1) I would like to say that EOTM is a very well designed map and makes keeping certain objectives important. If people thought it was more competitive and less “K-train” that might help. I personally think it’s a fun map but gvgers kinda take over it if they join the overflow.
2) The game was just released to China and I have seen screenshots of massive queue times. So I don’t think the game or wvw is dying but perhaps in NA and EU it may be “declining”.
3) Elitist guilds as others have said do not help new players and “pugs” to join wvw. I love pugs and I personally think it’s very fun to teach them stuff about wvw. But some gvgers do not and I guess I can understand they just want to gvg.
4) Seasons with a reward encourage overtime and burnout which follows. Many servers and guilds wvw community is simply tired after 9 weeks of competition. Perhaps Arenanet might consider shortening the seasons I don’t actually know just ideas.
5) The players need to be more of a WvW community and love each other rather than try to destroy each others server. It’s just a game and if we try to kill the competition completely then it’s not much fun for anyone in my opinion. In conclusion I am sorry to anyone if I have offended anyone because I love wvw and I love the pug players too.
For me the decline started with the tournament. I burned out after 2 weeks and every time I looked at the wvw panel, I just couldn’t get motivated to join in. The queues didn’t help. The lagfest in blob fights didn’t help. The repetitive nature of blobwipes didn’t help. The fact that take and hold was overshadowed by PPT didn’t help. WvW had an enormous amount of potential but sadly it’s just degenerated into farming mobs moving from point to point and lagfesting each other to victory. Strategy is virtually non existent, tactics are limited to how tightly a commander can hold the zerg despite the lag and how quickly they can split the enemy zerg.
I started playing WvW from my first week back in 2012, but have quit after the summer of 2013. WvW from then on just revolved around numbers, zerging and karma-training.
This game mode is totally finished.
Hate to say it but I see about the same number of people on today as I did a year ago. I am not saying that many of the issues raised aren’t valid but people are still playing WvW even with the migration of players leaving to play something new. Seems WvW rewards do pull in achievement hunters in and some stay. If we add in the EoTM zergs, probably more playing today than a year ago.

My bad I forgot the majority of players played PvP over WvW. Completely slipped my mind how 500 man guilds were queueing up for tPvP……
Why is it all the PvP heroes have an air of self entitlement?
… hod got massive server transfers before the season started, of course hod sees more people than it used to.
and I was one of the transfers so I am factoring that in. The servers I faced on BP were EBay, YB, SBI, FA, Mag, IoJ, DB, etc and most still have strong populations. Sure some servers have less WvW players (EBay, AR, BP) but others have more. Seems like the overall population is about as strong as it was a year ago.
We already know T1 has an incredibly strong population. A year ago T7-T8 was almost empty by comparison and that hasn’t changed. Given that EotM is part of WvW, the number of WvW players is probably higher. Granted that is a technicality of sorts.

Straegen used to be on BP, he moved to HoD just before S2.
I moved from T4 desolation, to kitten pre S2, left TC during S2 because it is absolutely rubbish to play in NA T1, moved back to Desoation (now T1) and i could barely see a difference in Desolation coverage…..

Stagnancy. The borderlands did have some good bloodlust additions, but the thing is that maps are still largely the same. We need more map rotations.
It’s a miracle this game mode is still alive.
for there you have been and there you will long to return.
I think I’ll be leaving this game soon if there aren’t some outstanding changes in wvw.
A lot of people/guilds will be. People want devs who actually care about their game modes. Gw2 has devs who only care about some poorly written story that they can’t implement through content. People who play wvw or gvg do it because they like big scale pvp. Our devs don’t care about that, they don’t want to give us content we want, they want to do things they want lol. So by the end of the year this game is going to be quite dead without any significant updates.
Can’t understand the hating on the orbs? It introduced a different mechanic into the game, plus some much needed new terrain. Did you guys all love the lake so much?!?
EotM outlived its need as “something to do while queued” when we finally got a friggin’ queue size indication. No one likes sitting in queue, but what sucked was you had no way of knowing how long you had to wait. That also made the queuing system look buggy, much more so than it probably was. Which in turn gave rise to anecdotes of you having to stay in one zone, no porting, or you’d mess up your queue position and won’t get in before next Wednesday.
If the queue indicators had been there and maybe access to the separate Obsidian Sanctum for some FFA PvP I don’t think EotM would have ever seen the light as it is now. Maybe, with changes, it would have been instead a alternate borderland map.
Stagnation. What’s the main reason we still play PvE? Content patches and living story.
I wouldn’t mind a new map or some type of map rotation

zergfest race smash keys bececouse makes damage content, no ty! better time playing 2048 or defending on wvw.

While I agree with you the majority of people not in WvW play because it’s all the same everyday, night and week. Downfall relates to the average player leaving WvW.
Free Transfers started the decline, to let them go on as long s they did … that was just stupidity at its finest.

And an unfair advantage due to the transfer issue.

Orbaggedon IMHO started the whole process of what we are seeing today.
I feel the summer of 2013 was perhaps the best times in WvW. Then anet released blood last and it began. Season 1 just killed servers tbh.
You could argue that the complete lack of developer attention started it but even with that all aspects of WvW thrived until blood lust.
Post your thoughts and definitely speak up if your home server became a victim
It all comes back to one single bad decision as far as I can tell, comparing last year to this year and being on two winning servers:
MEGASERVER and a complete lack of cohesion and community of the “server” attached to each WvW instance.
The second thing that is ruining WvW? Servers buying guilds for real money and in game gold.
If that isn’t against the terms of service, I can’t think of what would be worse. Maybe actually being able to see the cursor once I start shooting at anything, oh never mind, I am mixing fixes with extreme devastation while some pay to play, literally.
Those of us on the honest server that from my knowledge wouldn’t buy a guild are not losing hope, we have a wonderful community on my newer server but (although I can see some rumblings starting even on my server – angry, mean-spirited just like those who are buying guilds); the toxicity on some servers is more than palpable – it forces one to leave a once beloved server for kinder shores and this rancor is ruining the game.
Meagserver

Trolling/Verbal Abuse/Drunken Depravity The C word flows across WvW even on my newer server…(as well as other choice words for any who try to use any different type of strategy or recruit more pve’ers into WvW.

it has been discussed on day 1 in a HUGE forum post which the devs locked away.
no1. issue in WvW has always been, will always be… population / coverage. thats why servers getting stacked, thats why servers are dieing out.. people join stronger servers to be part of them and that makes them even stronger. people leave lower populated servers becaue the opposition is overwhelming / there is nothing you can do. there is not a single tiny mechanic in the game to stop that except gem costs and those usually arent even related much to the strength of a server in wvw. oh, i forgot outmanned buf (lol!). The actual competitive WvW game is bringing more wvw people to your server, all the ingame stuff is just a sequel.
ppt is not meaningless, the issue outlined above MADE it meaningless.

As your opponent as well as your teammate for two different seasons, I agree with you.
You of all people can’t be happy at the state of FA being greedy enough to buy even more guilds and have standing orders for ours on HoD, you put heart and soul into WvW and the state of the game can’t make you any less happy than it does me.
I had to shut down my computer last night for the trolling I was enduring – similar to what TUNE was doing to many on FA before they went to HoD (I had no idea) and all from a person who uses denigration of women’s bodies and misusing for unlawful carnal knowledge (when will anyone learn… it never was a word that was anything but clinical/legal and means nothing in and of itself – showing that people can’t think for themselves without filling the spaces with nasty speech that harms some, amuses others and annoys the rest while the game-makers are seemingly oblivious of what is killing the real end game of Guild Wars 2.
You’d like HoD, you really would.
Your skills and those of several of our commanders are so different and yet all of you could learn from one another.
I invite all FA who are tired of trolling, buying and unacceptable behavior to rally around FA or to leave and come to HoD or any other server (Devona’s Rest was amazing for guesting and told me I was not only welcome but would have fun trading builds… never happened on FA).
On HoD, this last season, I have had fun, frustration, ideas that never would have occurred to me on FA because no one was sharing in TS or in the guilds. I’ve had 16 hour days in HoD BL and yes I am FA’s favorite focus – yay me
I miss your commanding. I really do. When you took a property it was with confidence and with experience that you can actually teach to others. (sans the yelling – and I am kidding you aren’t the loudest commander in any WvW map by a long shot.).

I was on the FA forums – sorry you can’t find the name I used.
Every server has trolls but some have far more than others.
There were many servers that had free transfers, I chose HoD over all the others for many reasons – after guesting and testing out the waters.
I am sorry more didn’t follow to the “free” servers – it was a good move for many.
Sorry that FA deems it necessary to buy guilds – WvW doesn’t need the extra stress but there it is.

I found your name on the FA forums. You didn’t participate nor request access into the private section. You go on and on about server community yet, as far as what anyone can tell, you never got involved in FA’s community. No one remembers you being on FA. I’m not saying you were not on FA, only saying that you didn’t make a very good effort to join the community, let alone the WvWvW community.
It’s been how many weeks and you had “no idea” about TUNE? If you really were familiar with the FA community like you claim, you would’ve known about TUNE.

So I don’t know if this is the best place to do this (and it probably isn’t), but Habib started it..
The most recent update has finally realized most of the hopes and dreams I had regarding world versus world all those years ago when we first started talking about it around the office (somewhere in the 2007 or 2008 area). Wuv has been near and dear to my heart ever since, and I’m extremely proud of what the wvw team has created in that time. Wvw has been my primary focus for a couple of years now, but now it is time to hand the keys to the castle to someone else, Devon is that someone.
Devon and the rest of the wvw team will be fleshing out the new systems we’ve introduced and taking care of a lot of the long standing issues that we can tackle now that the great culling dragon is dead!
I’m extremely excited to see how the game will evolve and improve over time with Devon leading the way. He’s an amazing designer and I’ve seen the list of updates the team is prepping for April, I think most of you will be extremely pleased.
For all the conspiracy theorists out there, this is completely unrelated to any news elsewhere. I’m still at Arena.net, but the next time you see my name it will be for something other than world versus world. Something quite different indeed.
Until then..
I’ll see you on the battlefield!

…..I kinda like this, I don’t mind chatting for a min with someone after a good random fight.
An “Exiled” type 4th opponent on the map would toss in an element that would keep everyone on their toes and also give each player from each server the option for a locked period of time to just go rogue and group with any other rogues in WvW. But in it’s current state the forums wouldn’t allow these players to find each other

WVW was never a priority for the game and that is ultimately it’s biggest issue.
Loss of matchup forums was the final nail for me because it demolished the limited amount of community we had going, but mostly I stopped because rewarding players for playing poorly is a bad model and GW2 does it in every conceivable way.
So you didn’t read the INC GL’s post in the match-up thread; just heard it second-hand from your GL. HoD has only itself to blame for losing guilds that want to go to T2.

INC had made it public that they intended to get many members and transfer off. There was a “see you soon” post by them left in the PUBLIC section of the Maguuma forums…dated at the START of the season.
Everyone told HoD they had collected fairweather server hoppers…why did they think these guys would buck tradition and stay for them?
I just dont understand peoples rose tinted glasses of DaoC. That games RvR had tons of problems too, everyone here pretends it was pure gold.
The reason people dont make “hardcore” games like that anymore is they dont sell, no one wants to play a game where months of work is ruined by a few kittens in 20 minutes. I personally thought Shadowbane was the pinnacle of large scale PvP but a game like that just doesn’t sell and for good reason. Note the way PvE doesn’t look like original EQ anymore either.

Oh, I was misunderstanding the incredulity. FA has had a bad track record when it comes to warchests and using them. Especially since they really don’t need hopper NA unless INC convinced them they run late NA (like 8pm-12pm PST).
I heard they got some bronze leaguers for their night-time coverage but I hope they are ready for SoS’s bored nighttime legions. With DB avoiding fights with them (or blobbing), they really want someone new to sink their teeth into.
In fact, what happened/ is happening to FA is a lot of what this thread is about.
They lost out, big time, on server politics. In a better game, you shouldn’t be forced into decisions of whether or not to move up, to focus one server over another, or to buy coverage.
ArenaNet hosed everyone with the repeated increase of the server caps in T1. Increasing population limits for servers that were already FULL, while others were not; was just a slap in the face to so many others.
FA has had a bad track record when it comes to warchests and using them.
Which is why 1) no fully paid transfers and 2) there is no expectation that any of the guilds will stay or not disband. All guilds eventually disband or move on. Some of that happened even during the season and not only on FA. What matters more is the immediate future, not what could’ve/would’ve/should’ve happened long-term.

What I would like:
-New cycling maps (a couple of different sets of maps which rotate on a weekly basis)
-Bigger maps: discourage blobbing
-Higher health for structures. The most fun I had was after a 5 hour siege , actually having to take out the nearby towers and supply caravans and not just Golem rush it.
-Import features out of EotM. I don’t mind EotM that much+ I love the destructible bridges, implement this in regular WvW and maybe expand on it? Also Walls, bigger maps with build able (weak) walls to slow down opponents, could be fun. (wasn’t EotM going to be a WvW testing ground btw?)
-I like the special objectives in EotM, some of the places I wouldn’t want to see in reg WvW, but I like the variety they add. They should probably be in Neutral Lands, so all teams have a fair chance at capping them.
-Make the mercenaries/guards more powerfull, they have no point of existing right now, a group of ogres helping you in battle should be a serious help, hell, let them drop their own (weaker) siege like Ogre Ballista and Ogre Arrow Cart.
-Leave room for fights in a big open field and reward people for fighting, not only for hiding in a tower
(You can spread these features over multiple maps, one server might be better at holding multiple objectives, an other might be able to strategise better and so win in bigger maps and an other server might be the best at fighting and win in an other map.)
Actually, someone did bring up a good point earlier… removal of the matchup threads was a dumb move by ANET. Getting people passionate for their servers is a good thing. Instead people have gotten bored and moved onto new items.
I’m still hoping that the rumors of new WvW leadership are true. The last guy had a poor vision for where WvW could go. My hope is that someone else can take us in a better direction.
