Why are we fighting at all?
WvW is more of a gameplay feature than a storyline feature.
I can’t remember the exact quote, but one of the NPCs outside of the portals in LA explains it quite well. The other servers are evil, and we must eradicate them. :P

that “reasonable” guy you talk about tried to get in my garrison…
just listen the sylvari and norn NPC front of the asura gates in LA. the myst war is a misundetstood.
Just the WvW
R3200+
btw the myst is not a “real” place. just the the mirror of the past, present and future. the NPCs are not alive. they are just the same as the earth, air or water in the myst. the myst is changeing. things grow from the nothing and disappear in the next second.
the myst is the “dream of the reality”

I’m confused, why would anyone play WvW for lore ? I mean its your $60 and you can play for whatever reason you want it just doesn’t make sense why you would play WvW for the story.
- You see, according to quantum mechanics that the asurans discovered, there are 24 parallel universes in total and after having discovered the stargate mechanics from aliens delivered 20000 years ago, the enemy is constantly trying to eradicate each universe so that in the end there can only be one. Also i am very sure I quoted 3 movies in that paragraph.
The enemy is of different color and is trying to inhabit your neighborhood.
all is vain
I do it for the nookie

ya, but were talking about this game. stay on topic please
Why fight? Because Balthazar demands it!
I’m his Friday night entertainment. Grenth has a frequent flyer program too.
I agree we do not need a complicated storyline for WvW, it is just a massive PvP map, it is cool if you have some story to explain the existance of the mists and why we fight other “worlds”… but we just want to fight, if we want to be part of something bigger and have a role in Tyria universe we go PvE.
But… it is true we lack motivation… losing or winning in WvW means nothing. It would be nice to have something to fight for rather only server pride alone.
And I also gree that guilds should have more importance on WvW, give us something to fight for as guild, a guild ranking, anything…

Second prize: 1 Mystic Coin.
Third prize is you’re perma-banned.
Anet remove WvWvW from this game, in any form that makes WvWvW not what it is in its current state, and this game is done for me, and be assured, I would not be the only one.
Fighting and wars happens inside the game, and there’s in-game narrative that gives reasons to fight (defend what’s ours, conquer what’s theirs).
Abstracting from in-game narrative and talking about people, not characters, it is just a competition, pure and simple. Competition has intrinsic value. Of course it can be boosted by additional incentives, but there’s core self-sufficient value to it that lies in human nature. As long as the process itself is fun and engaging, it will survive without additional boosts. Those who complain should realize that it is the process that stopped to be fun for them.
Good example is GW2 unofficial GvG scene that is surviving and feeling good in absence of ANY extra incentive apart from being able to say “We won against that guild and that was intense as hell”.
So, which one are you talking about? Weakness of in-game narrative or your lack of competition spirit?
Killing players, most of them are bad and need to know when I:
Throw siege on their dead bodies
Jump on their dead bodies
/emote on their dead bodies
Is there any other reason to play?

Thanks, I knew I had forgot one.
My guild and I fight in WvW to have challenging fights against other guilds or big blobs, certainly it would be nice to have some special armor skins you can only get through WvW, but Anet never thought that WvW would get hyped the way it is now…
They never realized that guilds would like to fight each other, or that there would be all these organized guilds roaming across the maps, searching for action.
They just kittened this game up, when they decided to set their focus on pve (and tpvp) – why you ask? Because there are so many other games that outperform gw2 in pve, it’s just ridiculous and they still spitting out this new pve kitten every 2 weeks.
And for the tpvp part; I used to play tpvp for the first 4-5 Month, but than they removed the paid tournaments without something new. When they finally introduced custom arenas, observer mode, new maps, Ladders and all these other featured – most of the tpvp guilds had already left the ship, leaving behind a small portion of tpvp players…
I mean it took them more than 4 month to rotate the kittening maps in tpvp oftener than once every week, which means you had to play the same map over and over again – and the biggest joke, at the same time the maps were rotating randomly in pve (fractals).
I mean, I know that most of the pve players buy gems for kitten from the AH, they need to make money, so they try to motivate all the pve players to stay with gw2. Well to be fair, every now and then they release something for WvW and tpvp, but in the end it’s far to late and far from being good or something, they are just lucky for the time they got into, there is no real competition right now, but I think that will change in the near futur.
In the end there is just one think left to say, GW1 was a really nice pvp game and it’s always the same – “Cobbler, stick to your last!” – they should have never started with all this pve crap. Do one thing right, and that should have been tpvp and WvW (PvP)!

I think your head is in the right place, but not enough people care (generally) about lore and pve like mechanics in wvw.
The only thing holding this game together for me are the combat mechanics, and I think that it still needs some minor tweaks.

I may not be “fighting for my guild”, however, I AM fighting with my guild. And that’s enough for me.
Outside of server pride, of course. <3 my community.
i like to kill things, i don’t need lore to give me motivation
heck, i would even kill ppl from my own server if i could..in game, that is…<_<
[Teef] guild :>
Well, guilds should have a much bigger role in w vs w , the game name demands it, even the coat of arms is a joke . There is no motivaton other than to have a good fight sometimes , if you find a worthy enemy.
There should be a link between Tyria lore and wvsw land, fortifications should be kept more taking in consideration that some players upgrade them for 4 hours and a blob tales them in some minutes.
I want to see my enemy names in w vs w. I want to make a real coat of arms . I want 100 towers , each owned by a guild with complex economy.
Why are we fighting at all…… Same question that I thought … No engine to spin the wheel
Probably most money come from pve players
Balthazar wants war. Balthazar gets war. its the only reason we need.
For weeks did the battle rage on, and those who had taken up the mantle of war grew weary and their courage began to falter.
Then did Balthazar, god of war and fire, appear to the soldiers, carrying with him a grand sword that did glow with such brilliance it blinded any who looked upon it. When he spoke, His voice was like thunder, and it shook the ground with force.
Then saith He, “Lift up thy weapons. For you are my soldiers, and must you be steadfast, strong, and brave of heart. They who neither hesitate nor stumble shall be rewarded. Then shall you have glory. Then shall your deeds be remembered for eternity.”
And then did release from His sword a hundred thousand flames, which encircled the soldiers. For this was the fire of courage, and forthwith did they follow the god into battle without fear or hesitation. Thence was the enemy struck down.
— Scriptures of Balthazar, 48 BE
the lack of lore just proves that they never gave much thought to WvW, even while the game was still in development. every other aspect of the game has a ton of lore backing it up. WvW is, and always was, an afterthought, and it’s always been at the very bottom of their list of priorities. sure, they might try to deny it, but that’s just PR spin (lies). actions speak much louder than their hollow empty words ever could, and their actions show that they couldn’t possibly care less about WvW, and that they’ve always felt that way.
I agree Phantom. Look at Faction Battles in GW1. That had lore and a reason to fight. The more your side won, the more actual of Tyria was “claimed” by your faction.
