I’d really like to see the New Borderlands Map become a separate WvW zone altogether, with the restoration of the original borderlands with some tweaks. These new borderlands sadly did not have the impact hoped for, and no one is ever playing them.

things still auto upgrade, just because time has been removed it still doesnt drain supply from towers/keeps it still doesnt require human hands.
for the rest nothing has been changed..

what u should have done is get a rid of borderlands and get old ones in or recreate your new borderlands.

theres still no point in deffending your stuff since keeps get insta waypoint towers get upgraded overnight anyway etc.
the human touch needs to come back. upgrade stuff should have a value too people its all crap now.

anyway just my 2 cents do whatever you want im just a single player among 1000s others but i still dont see the human touch in WvW as it used to be.

The changes look interesting. Couple worries though. I’m afraid some of these changes will make the game even blobbier if possible. Some people won’t even come out if there is a chance they might die. Some servers are already bunkerish, they will go full bunker until thier blob blocks out the sun. Not very exciting.

And like others I am worried about some of the other over powered abilities that have been introduced. Unless they are adjusted expect some real crying over the ppk.

1. For ppk make sure 1 kill by 10 is the same point as 1 kill by 50.
2. 10 min till a kill counts again from same player so folks don’t farm each other at a wp for points.

Hmm, not sure about this one. It’s designed to give smaller, more skilled groups a better chance, but if you’re a smaller group defending a choke-point, such as a wall breach or a bridge, etc., against a larger force, sometimes being able to up dead members during combat IS a part of what allows you to hold out longer, especially if your dead players have to run back long distances to get back in the fray. I can see this one hurting smaller groups as much as helping them. I’m guessing they really only had open field combat in mind when they came up with this one. But considering that dolyaks will now be needed for upgrades, I suppose it will come in handy now for the small groups who will be put on dolyak duty. Plus, of course, the roamers will like it, but that has the potential downside of encouraging more people go about in smaller groups. (Conspiracy theory: AN is hoping for that last one because it translates to less complaints when balancing classes around 5-vs-5 pvp.) But some of us like our big battles.

Changing the auto upgrades: good.

Cata changes: I honestly don’t care. I think guild siege should cost less than other siege, however.

Rally changes: good.

PPK – I have mixed feelings about this. I want PPK. I want it to be a good measure of skill. But what I think it’s going to do is promote blobbing and AJs even more than what we already see now. (And, gamers being what they are, it’s going to promote a more toxic atmosphere in some instances.)

Let’s throw an example out there: today, if I see an enemy group around my size, I’ll hit them. Win or lose, we have the opportunity for a fun fight. When that fight results in a second group hitting us, doubling the enemy presence, yeah, wish that hadn’t happened, but it did. Brush yourself off at spawn, quick review of what went well and where we need to improve, and move out again.

PPK can change that mentality, depending on how it’s implemented and weighted. From “let’s see what we can do” to “don’t be a free bag”.

Of course, it becomes a good reason to actually build and run turtle banners…

So – mixed feelings on the subject. To me, how it impacts fights and the community is going to be the deciding factor.

If anet just changed it back to the old alpine bl maps so people will come back to the game and implement new stuff into the old map, like how the npc’s are, etc.
Because most of all the WvW people don’t like the desert bl map.
It looks good but for a pve map, not for a WvW map.
But anet does things in a different way! first do the things they can change very quickly.

PPK finally they changed to this, they make it look like we ask for this just lately!! we are asking for this since wvw season 1 ended!!
Autoupgrade still in it, but they changed it a bit. Still will be boring not to do any effort to upgrade stuff.

But yeah Anet keep on holding on your pressious desert bl map! hoping to get people back into the game. Nobody likes your desert pve bl map!!

I know that Nora from far shiverpeaks EU was interviewed, don’t know if another EU commander was interviewed.

But mostly all the commanders say Desert bl looks nice, but its a map not for WvW, mix it in with eotm map.

These are some nice changes. The zerg has enough built in advantages, and the rally mechanic really favored them in almost every clash, but with a 1:1 death to rally ratio that advantage is mitigated.

PPK is awesome, but let’s hope it doesn’t make groups that think they might lose avoid fighting. That was one of the disappointments we saw when it was tried out the first time.

People have convinced me more or less on the rally changes.

The no ressing in combat still seems silly to me. I’ve never seen a situation where it was advantageous to res someone in combat. Usually you just end up with more dead people.

On the other hand it’s super easy to troll people with treb gas etc. If you fight near your keep, it’ll be important to have someone ready to 24/7 treb a spot where the fight happens, in order to guarantee that they have to respawn even if they win the fight.

I’ll be around for some days before the holidays, but I wanted to take this chance to wish all of you a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

Gaile, I definitely support these changes! I would like to mention something about the way that squads work in WvW regarding player contribution to receive credit for kills. In the traditional parties, it was very simple to receive credit for killing a monster/player even if you only hit that enemy for very small damage. In squads I noticed a significant increase in difficulty to receive credit for kills during large scale combat. In squad it seemed that there was no group contribution system for receiving credit for kills/loot. After noticing this, I found several reddit threads regarding this issue and have seen several comments about it in-game. I decided to test this with a couple friends by creating a party and comparing how easy it was to receive credit for kills in WvW with that party versus the rate at which we received credit for kills in WvW in a squad. It was very clear that being in a party instead of the squad gave a significantly larger chance to receive credit for kills. This is a disappointment for me because creating a squad is the only way that a commander and his team play together in WvW now. There is also another downside with squads in WvW since they have a player limit of 50 players when there is often more than 50 people present on the team, so the players that are locked out of the full squad are not included in the organized squad sub-groups and supply count (commanders mainly look at squad to check his/her team’s supply count).

no rallying is great for zergbusting guilds. people used to get yelled at a lot if they died during a zergpush and rallied everyone.

getting rid of autoupgrades is good too. please also remnove the constant messages of who capped what. we have a map and scouts can open the map to see that there is a camp that was capped.
we also dont need to know on screen which guild capped it. otherwise the whole ninja capping many smaller guild used to love is pointless as EVERYONE on the map knows that your server capped a camp and your guild claimed it…..

could we get the old map rotated in sometimes? i really enjoyed being able to just walk with my map open and if i die have a chance at least to walk back to garrison…..

Not only are the changes going in the right direction, but the method of presenting them in advance with an indication of the launching date is imo the best way of doing it.

I do agree it’s the first step to the right direction. Honestly I don’t know how it is for other servers, but the fact that there is such a big drastic change in borderlands basically made it deserted for our server. Since people couldn’t get used to the borderlands (and a lot of us don’t have time to try and get used to it), they just stick to EB only.

That, and the problem of night capping really has affected our server’s mentality. Mostly because we know they’ll win due to night capping anyways, so why even bother. Our server recently really only look for fights rather than doing PPT anymore. I really do hope one day Anet will push out something that would stop this problem. (I know someone has addressed the issue.) Either close WvW at night, or make it so that it doesn’t count as much, or don’t count at all. I understand that some players might play at night or early morning only, but still, there are plenty of time during the day to quickly do the dailies too.

I would like to suggest that Sentry points should be able to kill or stop dolyaks from passing them. that will encourage players to take the Sentries.

PS to all the players that don’t like the new maps, if you spend the same amount of time playing the map as you cry about them than you will see how easy and fun they are.

Bit rude there.

For me, the new maps, whilst being nicely made, are considerably less fun than the old maps.

There’s too much focus on verticality and that mid event is a disaster. That’s my opinion, it differs from your own one, but it is equally valid.

Any comment here, both negative and positive, helps the devs create the ideal game mode – and if this thread is any indication, it could start getting much better from here on.

Many of these changes were suggested by myself and others in this very forum at least 2 years ago. Let’s hope it’s not too little, too late.

Sadly, for some it already is; I know many players who are leaving the game because of the lack of WvW support and the fiasco of the borderlands implementation with the HoT release.

The take away from this should be:

a) Stop letting WvW languish.

b) Listen to the WvW player base when they make suggestions and don’t take 2+ years to implement them.

Unfortunately, based on past experience, this probably won’t happen.

Erm…which one? The one who was downed the most recently? The one downed for the longest? The closest? The one who did the most damage to the killed one? Some other measure? Random?

That’s the change that puzzles me, both in how it is going to work and why it’s apparently so important. I wasn’t aware hard rezzing was an issue although clearly from the responses above it has been for some. Certainly no-one’s been hard-rezzing me in combat over the last three years!

The Dolyak change is excellent. Auto-upgrading was a daft idea to begin with for so many reasons. If we could get rid of the ludicrous “Kill Dinos to Fire A Laser” mini-game that would be great too.

Supply cost for cats is okay although I can’t say I’ve noticed all that many cats in use in the new BLs – mostly we seem to have been flash-building Omegas.

PPK I couldn’t care less about either way. If it makes people happy, fine.

In the end, though, it’s the new BL design that’s the problem. It would make a great PVE zone with flying enabled, something it was clearly designed to be, but there are no tweaks that will ever make it any more than awkwardly manageable for WvW.

Sorry Anet, but these changes do not bring me any hope whatsoever. I appreciate that this is meant to be a “sneak peak”, but these changes are worth little to me. In fact, some of them will just make WvW even worse in my opinion – why would you make it so that you can’t revive a dead person whilst in combat? I understand the logic, but I personally think it’s just a terrible idea with potential to be abused by trolls.

You only mention one thing about the new BLs, which is the cost of catapults. Whilst I agree with this, I personally think that the main issue with the new BLs is that a (seemingly) vast majority doesnt’ like them. We just don’t like them. They’re huge, they’re far too vertical and although they’re pretty, they’re impractical. I feel like they’ve killed the attraction of small-scale or even solo roaming. I’m not about to build a cata to take something by myself like I once did because it’s just too much time spent running back and forth from a camp across such a large map.
Ideally, Anet would bring back the Alpine BLs as well as keeping the new ones, but then again that’s not going to happen.

It just seems to me that there are things more problematic than those you’ve addressed so far. WvW is dying, if not already dead in some smaller servers and these changes are too little too late. I do hope to see more.

I’m not quite sold on this because there is still an automatic element to it.

I believe upgrades should require a player to talk to a quartermaster and click on a confirmation button when an upgrade is ready to occur otherwise empty maps, especially in lower tiers, are still going to have yaks reach them and they’ll upgrade automatically. Servers should not be automatically rewarded for the opposing server having no one around to snipe yaks.

I’m going to preface this by stating I used to wvw a lot. Occasionally solo roaming/defending/annoying, but typically in a small group, 2-5, of friends, roaming and looking for fights. Only reason we really took things was to get fights. Typically it ended with getting a zerg called in on us, which even if we died gave us quite the laugh. This was essentially our end game, for well over a year. More like 1 1/2. Since HoT release, however, we have barely stepped foot in WvW. This will be long winded, so hopefully it’s not ignored completely. Feedback was asked for so here it is. I wasn’t going to post, because I’ve been disillusioned with wvw in particular, but for some reason felt I should throw in my opinion.

I will say that whoever put the effort into the Desert Borderlands did an amazing job, in that it is a beautiful map and I’d like to do things with it, but not as a WvW map. If it was a pve type map, it would need far more going on though. If it was more like EotM, perhaps it would be more interesting, although most likely people would just ktrain it so meh. Would need some way to get people to divide up into smaller groups and fight it out on that map. As for what to do with it, I don’t know. As is, it’s just far too big for a WvW map, especially a borderland. It feels like I could have run laps around the old Alpine map in the time it takes to walk just the width of the Desert map. I know when the map was tested, that people doing so stated it was too big.

  • Auto upgrade without anyone doing a thing will still occur, so this issue isn’t resolved that can hurt morale and discourage servers with no off-peak coverage and everything upgraded by the time they do log on. At least there can be action against yaks to stop upgrading by a few. Overall probably a good change, as it makes those that enjoy being havoc a chance to make a difference by killing yaks more. Not just slowing upgrading, but stopping it. Does little for real fights unless defenders guard those yaks, which they should, then perhaps we have a target to small group fight around. If so, all the better. Will see how it goes.
  • Supply cost change for catas is a good thing for small groups, but probably far too nice for larger groups and zergs. Of course it also leaves a question about rams, and what incentive is there to use them really. If you are a small group, between gates being fortified now and cata cost getting lowered, cata will seem even more desirable. As it is now, you have a chance to get to an objective and possibly raise an alarm to potentially save it, although not easily. With this change, it could be a bit too easy to quickly take objectives before any defense can arrive due to Desert BL size. EB will probably be about like it always was really.
  • I’m hoping this is points per stomp and not actually points per kill, although I’m assuming the latter which will just give credibility to zergs chasing down roamers. Yes it happens, and yes it will happen, but if it is actually ppk, then it gives further encouragement to doing so. Points per stomp rewards doing something besides just pressing 1, and gives some risk to the one doing so, which is how the ruins were intended to work before with the Bloodlust mechanic. Either way, those that ‘rage quit’ to prevent stomping/killing should contribute to points, or this behavior too will be encouraged. And they should give bags (no they don’t always, and one way seemed to always prevent you getting a bag). Will Obsidian Sanctum kills count to ppk? Assuming not but felt should ask as it shouldn’t count.
  • As for rallying, this is a mixed bag. Perhaps it will help limit the instances of people rallying off of someone dying across the map, which was so frustrating, but if 2 allies are downed, and I stomp someone to rally them, who gets rallied? If I have a friend downed, and some random ally had come up and also downed, and I secure that stomp, what is to say my friend will be rallied? Far too often, a random joining a small coordinated group can be a detriment and not a help, either because they aren’t as skilled or just because they don’t know what the group is going to do. Their intentions may be good, but the result may not be, and hate to sound callous but they are the last person I want rallied. If all of my group are up, then of course I’d want to revive the downed ally, I’m not completely mean unless given reason. I also think this will primarily actually benefit larger groups. Oh it will lower the ease with which a larger group can just hard rez people, but then again, being a larger group, they can afford to have a few people break combat and start reviving, just as happens now. Smaller group may not be able to keep them all in combat to prevent reviving.

On the note about rallying, I know that I’ll be quite ticked off if I get downed, along with some random ally, but they get the single rally and run off. Of course I also have some of the same questions others have asked about reviving dead. Most likely this will interrupt channeling the revive just like being hit at other channels interrupts you. Why not just see someone trying to revive a dead person, and hit them, to keep them in combat but just dance around nearby. They can’t revive and are stuck in combat. People will do this. I mean, I’ve attacked players trying to revive someone. Now, wouldn’t have to kill them, just keep them in combat. Already reviving while in combat was discouraged by how slow it is. And, there is nothing to stop people getting revived in large battles anyways. You just need someone to run off, break combat, come back, and sneakily revive as already stated, it has always happened. Of course, you’d be surprised at how many people will ignore an obvious shadow refuge on a dead body as well >.<
Last but not least, is something being done about this sometimes being stuck in perpetual combat for no reason? It will be a bigger issue with this change to reviving dead. This occurs all over GW2 though. Of course since it’s so random most likely will never be fixed.

Why in the world are PvP League Ranks shown in WvW and PvE.
Shouldn’t WvW have their own Icon based on WvW rank?!

I like the Desert Borderlands, Great Job, But AGAIN you guys have copy pasted it 2×.

Why is it not Themed by color.

The concept of Factions instead of servers would be most satisfying. T1 Servers have guilds that control the wvw maps and can switch out to different servers.
How about if we have Factions that guilds can join so that all the Tiers can play on the same kittening level. A large dynamic map with territories that do not reset for an extended period of time.

Enough with the Tiers and ladder tourny set up.

This game has so many factions aka servers what if we had just 2 factions like how Gw1 was set up I do not see any conflict with server transfers and other crap. This game has an issue with even distribution of players through out the other tiers and this could solve it.

PPK is a good thing for many especially zerg busting groups and those servers that manipulate the system in order to remain in present match-ups. The flaw I see? Recently, match-ups for some servers have been made up of 3 servers from 3 different tiers on NA. Not complaining-it is a challenge & a bit entertaining when your server is the lowest tier (gotta love the emotes & whispers). I watch the Death /kill ratio on a regular basis. It is not a surprise that the stat declines for the bottom server. The main reason that tiers exist is due to population-WVW is a game of numbers for the most part. PPK, from what I have witnessed would be detrimental to servers who have the outnumbered buff 75-85% of the time. It’s a conundrum. Stale match-ups or fluctuation of tier match-ups ? The latter taking a toll on the lower server’s PPK and Glicko. <<shrugs>> In the end it is not my decision. I imagine this will occur also in set tiers when one server dominates in population. But, is the population as distinct as in different tiers? Just my 2 cents

New maps are not a problem. We do not dislike new maps, we dislike the new map. Re-do and do-right. You need to learn how to iterate upon what you have and expanding upon the game mode, rather than completely changing the entire premise of the map and the game mode. Learn from the two mistakes (EoTM and Deserted). Roll back to the Alpine maps, iterate upon them and release new different but similar maps when available.

Dude I don’t want to play the old kitten. I’ll just leave for good if they bring back the old map we played a million hours already. You’ll realize how bad it was after 1 hour.

The new map is better designed for more varied fights. The only problems are lack of waypoints and population, both of which have nothing to do with the map itself.

What they need to do is give us 4 different maps with an alliance system and close the EotM overflow. Or merge all the servers and have 3 DBL maps, 3 ABL maps, 2 EotM maps, 2 EBG maps.

That’s the change that puzzles me, both in how it is going to work and why it’s apparently so important. I wasn’t aware hard rezzing was an issue although clearly from the responses above it has been for some. Certainly no-one’s been hard-rezzing me in combat over the last three years!

It is a problem: the bigger the enemy blob the better they can “hard rez” their dead = their numbers don’t get smaller.

Changes seem to be a decent step in the right direction – but the most important thing for me is that finally someone from Anet has posted in WvW forum.

Gaile – thanks for letting us know and seeking feedback. I hope this signals a change in policy for WvW and in future there will be more of these “here’s what we want to bring in, what do you think?” posts. In cases like this your player base represent many many hours of play whether casual or hardcore and whilst you’ll never get 100% agreement, that combined experience can help review ideas in a way that would take the development team months to do.

I like the suggestion (somewhere in here) of reviewing any changes after a trial period too. This is no different to doing regular balance reviews.

One point I’d like clarified though – camps upgrading. They don’t need dolyaks to arrive so will they just auto-upgrade on a timer (no change) or will they require human interaction (my favoured choice)? It does make a difference for single roamers, and leaving us to start camp upgrades would not be a bad thing imho.

How about: Scrap servers entirely, and randomly assign all players to one of 3 factions (red, green, blue). Then, give each player one free transfer so that guilds/friends can move to be together. After that, charge a fee (equal to the average transfer fee now) to switch factions, but double the fee if moving to a 5%+ higher population faction, and make the transfer free if moving to the least-populated faction. All new accounts would automatically begin on the lowest-population faction (with 1 free transfer). Then, WvW can be on a megaserver with overflows (which also contribute to faction points scored). Players can taxi to a BL/overflow to be with their friends/guildmates. Week-long faction tournaments then would become incredibly fun!

‘Elite’ in all 9 professions. I take mediocrity seriously!

90% of these changes are good but I can see one very serious flaw. The number of rallying players being reduced so greatly will crush groups that work on rallying instead of defensive ressing. That however would not be a huge issue, though I might suggest making it 2 or 3 rather than 1 from 5, too drastic a change can create a really nasty change that people don’t like.

The big big problem comes from “hard ressing” Not being able to res in combat will be a hassle if you are stuck in combat, it will stop groups from being able to hard res if needed in combat… that is not resolving combat, that is disadvantaging a group if their dps goes down… meaning it will flux groups to only target certain players in fights… its not really a good change. Ressing a player in combat should be a tactical choice, not something denied by a system. Ultimately everything is in line, but I would suggest changing the rally to 2 instead of 1 from 5, and taking out the hard res. At the very least until you see how this is going to affect the combat in WvW.

So a good step in the right direction, but please be careful with some of the rampant over-nerfs you will see with stuff like this… good luck

Whoah! That’s some Wintersday present to WvW players.

  • Objectives upgrades will no longer be automatic based on time
    • Excellent change! Dolyaks, supply camps and roaming will become important again.
    • Please fix the dolyak routes while you are at this change:
      • Returning dolyaks position has been bugged for years. The returning dolyak is not where client thinks it is.
      • This week also the forward going dolyaks are lagging badly. The dolyaks just stand still for minutes and then teleport to their destination.
  • Supply cost for all catapults are being reduced by ten supply
    • Excellent news for low populated servers like mine. Having to run supplies is a real pain on the desert borderlands.
  • Points per kill will be turned on
    • Many forum posters here have been asking for this. I’m on the fence with this one.
    • Please consider making this point-per-finisher instead. That way it will require some skill to gain points. Smaller fights would be more significant than a huge zerg just carpet bombing an area.

The changes just miss the point that not everybody loves the architecture and the environment of the borderland map as well as its keeps (there are enough threads about this one, please don’t discuss).
Nobody will want to upgrade the objectives just because it doesn’t happen automatically. They may probably start doing this until they’re fed up.
Same will happen to Open-PvP lovers: they just don’t like those maps.

conclusion:
From my point of view those features are great, but you should first deal with the fact that ppl don’t like the new borderland design – not only its mechanics.
