During the day, map is empty except main keep. So when I see the devs saying you need to hold this and that, you gonna activate whatever gimmick… WITH WHO?

You see, this is what I’m talking about the problem is with “population imbalance”. The world is made of three types of people:
1) The people who complain that things aren’t getting done
2) The people who’s get the kitten done
3) And the people who don’t give a kitten
90% of the players in WvW are either 1s or 3s. And this than divides servers. The servers who have the most 2s will get a lot of kitten done because a 2 looks at a situation and doesn’t quit until they are victorious.
Let me give u a scenario: say Kaineng is faced up against a server that has so much coverage an numbers, they spawn camp is LITERALLY everywhere. I’m talking Zergs at all 3 exits of every spawn on every map. I’m just gonna try to kill as many of those noobs as I can before I die, and I will keep doing it until they get tired of killing me or I kill all of them. This never happens, and I am a bit of an extremist.
So how does this solve your problem?
Hold the thing YOURSELF, activate the thing-a-mabober YOURSELF! Obviously there isn’t no one on the map of you are there. Last time I checked, if you actually bother to log on, you are considered a player. That is the point im trying to make. Don’t be so caught up in your zerg that you forget how to think for your self. I don’t give a kitten what rank you are or how many kills you have if you have done all of that through zerging. If you can’t defend something by yourself, you aren’t a REAL wvwer. Quite honestly, I dint believe you can call yourself a evert until you can solo a tower, and if you sit in a zerg all of your time in WvW, you probably can’t.
Moral of the rant:
Stop moping, grow a pair, and get the kitten done YOURSELF!

The problem is that I don’t play an MMO to play by myself. I want to play with other people. That’s where the fun is.

I do things solo like scout or take a camp sometimes. But that’s not really fun. The fun comes with playing with others. And if there’s a lack of people online then you can’t do that. And too many servers have a lack of people.

I do think that there is a lack of leadership in WvW. (Perhaps that’s what you’re saying between the lines.) But leading is hard.

I am amazed at what I’ve seen in terms of human psychology and sociology here in GW2. The presence of one good leader can make all the difference. That leader goes and poof – everyone else evaporates. Pretty interesting to watch. But I digress.

Spiritus’ point is valid even if he didn’t say it well. A new map will not fix the underlying issues of WvW. Population/Coverage Imbalance being the main one.

Agree 100%. This PVWALL/PVDOOR crap needs to cease. I just came back to the game after a long break and am amazed how everything is just a karma/xp train now, no one even wants to fight, no one wants to defend, and it is more advantageous to let them flip it then stop them. “Don’t repair the doors/walls!” in EOTM…..huh? The pvp in this game is a flipping joke.

We need objectives to give a kitten about that promote actual pvp.

Smaller server E.G most of the server are gonig to struggle to populate all these maps, home border, enemy border, EB and now this new map. did you consider the servers like vabbi or wsr etc who have no chance of covering these.

Now the 4/5 MASS blob servers will absolutely destroy everyone, you’re stretching allready struggling servers at the moment. you’re gonna kill you’re game in wvw at this rate.

You make a valid point. If someone does not enjoy solo play than it is difficult. What you said about a single leader being charismatic is very true. There are those few people who, when you see them, are always doing something entertaining.
This is a fair enough argument that I cannot dispute because it is all a matter of your opinion. I can only say that tagging up helps to gather people, being in several WvW guilds helps you to find people to roam with, and music makes solo roaming much more entertaining

if i remember the HoT presentation correctly, it was said that the new map will be part of the weekly roration. In other words, this map will be important to a server’s ppt which is what wins matchups. guilds will most likely defend it but as to what kind of map it is or what kind of pugs will be there, we’ll just have to wait.

I think the OP means: From the albeit little information we have, it seems they’re focusing on gimmicks instead of fixing (or attempting to fix) the problems that have existed with WvW at a fundamental level, again.

It seems that Arenanet have given up on doing this and so it is understandable that players have given up on Arenanet and are looking to other games in the hope they won’t have the same flaws.

Nobody at Anet loves WvW like Grouch loved PvP. That’s what we need, a WvW Grouch, but taller.

I’m hoping for something completely different from EotM. We already have one, why would we need another? Pretty sure anet knows this too. EotM was presented as somewhere to go for overflow, so most never really took it too seriously. This new map sounds a lot more integral to the wvw experience.

My main problem is with the focus on defending. What I enjoy the most is large scale open world fights, and most of the people on my server shares this sentiment. I never heard from people that it was so exciting to sit on a tower for hours escorting dolyaks and building/refreshing siege. What I can understand from the snippets of information is that defending will become more important now for points. I don’t want to play in a WvW where every server turtles in their keeps with kittenloads of ACs as this is the best way to get the points.

Speculation: I think towers/keeps/etc will give more points the longer you hold them or T2/T3 keeps give more points.

I appreciate that you are interested in finding out more of what will be in the new map, but we didn’t show anything about it in the trailer that could lead you to the conclusions here. We’ll be talking about it a lot more and showing it off soon. At the least I’d hope you can reserve judgement until then.

i think you would have more faith from the community if there was more interaction between the players and the wvw team. i know people insult for stupid reasons (OP for example), but that’s out of frustration. a more interactive relationship cuts down on frustration and will lead to a better experience.

if its anything like the current EotM though it WILL suck. that much i will agree with.

Looking at the promotional image I’m having a really hard time trying to figure out how this is a WvW map, and not some PvE map. Bottom right, there appear to be glass platforms that look like they belong in a jumping puzzle. The rest looks highly vertical (and the description even says so). Just a quick show of hands, when you play WvW do you want to

1) Navigate treacherous heights?
2) Have to constantly worry about falling to your death thanks to “traps that blow your foes to the depths below”? *cough*EotM*cough*
3) Fight people?

Personally I like #3. I don’t want to see any of the influence of the abomination that is Skyhammer in a borderlands map, I don’t want to hop across platforms like a JP to get anywhere ever, and since when has WvW ever been enjoyable when you throw in vertical combat? How does that even work when the majority of weaponry has limited range, and most of the good fights currently in the game involve more or less horizontal engagements? I mean, I’m sorry, but the promo image just looks like a mess. Sure, it’s pretty. But I’m really struggling to see anything else I like.

Maybe instead of dropping in and leaving Devon could enlighten us a bit about exactly how this map is supposed to work?

Defending ain’t boring. Siege wars are boring.

I love siege wars. Especially do I love the way roamers sometimes fight each other over the whole map. This weekend I tracked a thief, who killed me earlier, just by looking at objectives on the map. I found him and got my revenge. In the same time I prevented him from killing more dollies. This is what I do day in and day out in WvW. This is what I enjoy and what helps supply flow into keeps and towers.

Another time a mesmer surprised me. I managed to fend him of and made him run. But he knew where I was going and ambushed me when I absolutely didn’t expect that. I died. I would have most like taken him in a straight on dojo style 1v1. But via strategy and map exploitation he won the upper hand. This is what WvW is for me. All those fights happen outside the main Zerg movements and are part of the siege war.

I understand, that that’s not for everyone. But don’t assume something is generally boring, when just you don’t like it.

My opinion on this is that people are going to try and turn it into EoTM, but its going to be more like yaks bend siege humping the kitten out of 10 arrow carts inside of a tower, so even if you some how get the gates or wall down, you are going to wipe your fatty blob over and over again to 10 kitten holes. This isnt even the worst part either, NPC’s are going to be raining down ice bows like EoTM along with my guess of NEW champion keep lords dropping bombs on you too. Im all for rewarding defensive people and scouts, but at the same time how are you rewarding the open field fighters that like to GvG? Please do not tell me SPVP STRONGHOLD is your fix, because if we cannot use our WvW gear and literally only fight players, then you have totally ignored the WvW part of the community. Give the GvG community a way to fight in OS or some other new arena using our current WvW gear and with the numbers/size fight we chose without any PVE, and make it so we dont have to be in the same tier to do it. Now any GvG or WvW player would want to buy something like that. I know I will not be buying HoT with real $. The only way Im getting it is if its free, or its available in the gem store and can be bought through gold to gems in game. I know atleast a few people who feel the same will not buy it either with real $. I notice also that instead of revamping all borderlands maps and making it different for each borderland, we are left with 1 new map in rotation that instead of giving us a different experience each time we change maps, we get no where near the experience that PVE players get. When I say this I mean PVE players get new maps it seems all the time. How is this fair? How do you justify making us pay for an expansion that doesnt even give us those multiple experiences(completely fresh new maps) that PVE people get so often?

2) Mechanisms have to be put in place, so not everyone can stack on one server, or stack their off-time hours, making the achievement of objectives from 1) trivial.

I hope the WvW HoT reveals will show that ANet addressed these issues.

I’m starting to see why they don’t have a presence much anymore on these forums.. From someone who is a hardcore wvw’er all I have to say is most of you guys complaining is why this game mode doesn’t get many updates.. Lots of ideas from forum users are totally out of this world and if they listened to everyone, this game mode would be long gone and dead..

Seriously wait till it is released before you all jump in and say its another EoTM map.

When EoTM was first introduced it was sort of fun, We had massive fights, players defended stuff etc etc. Players and the fact that there is no community(server identity) in EoTM is what turned it into a k-train. Map chats are full of trolls and backseat commanders.. Scores have no impact so why even defend?

EoTM was a place for people to have some sort of competitive fights while waiting for those long queues to pop up.. Anet let everyone into EoTM so it has turned into what it is by the players.. Want to fix WvW population? Get rid of players being able to go into EoTM if they have no maps queued.. Put back EoTM for only those servers that have high queues since that was what it was basically created for..

If players keep saying it will be another EoTM map well sorry to say you are the ones that will turn it into an EoTM map..

PvE Megaserver….meet WvW Megaserver in alliances.

I know several players who stopped playing GW2 because of the megaservers. The map caps are set high enough that every map feels crowded now, which I don’t consider a good thing, and they broke the community on lower population servers. I no longer see the same familiar faces, which I also don’t consider a good thing. Doing that to WvW, where I stay on a low-population server because of the community, would probably kill the game for me. No, I don’t play for massive battles against faceless opponents. I play for the scrappy fights against unpredictable odds against small and moderate sized groups of players.

EotM is actually super fun when people actually try to hold and defend territory. The reason it has turned into a ktrain lovefest is due to the core problem that has plagued WvW since the beginning; there is no real reward, other than satisfaction, for defending.

Anyway, I am quite excited to see what the new Borderlands brings. I wonder if it’ll be on a all server rotation each week, or whether each server gets a different Borderlands. (e.g. Blue gets the new one, Red and Green get the old ones. Next week it’s Green and Red with the new one, Blue on the old one. Third week it’s Green and Blue on new, Red on old.)

Reading throhgh this thread and the contradictory demands makes me wonder, if Anet even has a chance to satisfy. Also it is way harder to create an even semi balanced map for PvP than for PvE. So the demand for as many new WvW maps as new PvE maps already is unrealistic. Especially considering that the PvE player base is bigger than the WvW player base.

The problem with EOTM isnt the map PvE elements, it’s the lack of reason to defend because PPT are not added to the server score.

I disagree.

The reason isn’t because of PPT not added to the server score, it is because sieging is too rewarding.

It is simple, remove all rewards in EoTM. The map now rewards you with every objective held each time the timer is up.

The game is called “Guild Wars”, so how about Anet focus on guild vs. guild and instanced gvg. I’m guessing most of the players (me included) started playing the game since there was a premise of great gvg focused game, and here we are.

Well Anet did say they want to make defending and holding objectives more important. I hope that they will at the same time consider how to fix the “coverage wars”, which there are several suggested fixes, most of them being detrimental to the importance of “night crews”, which might kitten off many people, but I don’t think it was Anet’s original intention that servers could only compete if they hired a lot of people from outside their own region’s timezone.

And Kulaz, the name “Guild Wars” does not derive from GvG. It’s part of the history of Tyria. In any case, there will be GvG sPvP in the expansion, with leaderboards and all. On top of that you can still GvG in larger numbers at the OS arena or wherever.

WAR community was all about RvR (realm vs. realm), and still some of the most competitive gw WvW guilds were the ones joining the game from WAR (RG, VII). So question stands why most of them left? Or at least why most of the players have left? Well for me – there is nothing competitive about current WvW. And if players take their own steps creating GvG scene, that should raise some attention from devs.
There is something unique about potential of GvG, which could make this game one of the kind in the sea of PvE based MMOs.

Well that’s what I read from your post. Maybe I misunderstood. In game development it unfortunately is either/or, because the team’s resources are limited.

Both WvW and GvG have received updates in the past. WvW gets more updates because it has a player base far bigger than the GvG scene has. PvE gets even more updates because of the same reason.

Both GvG and WvW are also getting updates in the expansion, although it’s safe to say they pale again compared to what PvE will get.

That’s just how the wheel turns. More players playing a game mode means more money spent in relative gemstore purchases which means even more money to use to improve that particular game mode. I’m pretty sure Anet tracks the time usage of each of their players and can see demographics of how much an average person spends in each of the game modes.

I would also wager sPvP is by far the least played game mode measured in both absolute player numbers and time spent there on average. I would also wager the ratio of gems purchased versus time spent is the worst (Anet’s PoV) within the sPvP crowd. It only receives attention because the content there is quick to create and Anet wants it to be an Esport.

GvG seems relatively easy to implement and it would be a nice move towards mass pvp community. WvW overall changes are far more complex.

Now the numbers game. It’s bit like the carriage driver saying in the beggining of 20th century saying: why’d you invest in them useless cars. Carriage is far more superior. lolz Or even a better comparison with MOBA becoming so popular in short period of time.

I can think of at least few hundred (few hardcore guilds 30+ members) players who have left the game due to the lack of changes in WvW area. Also these are the players who devote themselves to gaming. All the strategic/build/class theorycrafting can improve the game in general.

Tbh my best time playing GW2 where the betas, staying up all night excited that we are enetering something new with guildies. And here we are. I’m aware I’m not the best example since i hate the PvE (thank you Anet for gear balance, a no gear grind).

According to an old Anet Dev around 1/10 of the WvW population remains and I dont think many will return to WvW just for a new Map. Spez and Class changes will bring back more tbh. And yea we cant say how CU turns out but most I played with in DaoC and WaR are waiting for just that game and alot have already left despite nno othe option really is out there, says ALOT.

Of the games u mentioned above only ESO has real WvW but UI,SuB and well other stuff failed that game hard. I may be wrong and its not like CU is out anytime soon but yea it will be final nail in the gw2 WvW coffin, of that I have no doubt.

We’ll be talking about it a lot more and showing it off soon. At the least I’d hope you can reserve judgement until then.

Sure, I can reserve judgment, but I’ll just mention that WvW players I’ve spoken to don’t seem to want any fancy new mechanics (unless they are intended to solve the problems we currently have). That’s why, when we hear about Earth and Molten keeps we get sceptical about the new content being gimmicky like EotM.

On another note I’ll just state that we heard from devs in the past how difficult and lengthy a process it was to make a new map and yet when they do get created they are far more complex than the playerbase either requires or desires.

As a word of advice, without trying to sound patronising,
give us plain(ish) landscapes and let us make the gameplay!

Nobody at Anet loves WvW like Grouch loved PvP. That’s what we need, a WvW Grouch, but taller.

I agree, most wvw players want nothing to do with EoTM, it’s landscape, its PVE Nonsense.. That is why no one takes EoTM seriously and pretty much treat it like a PVE leveling zone instead of actual gameplay.
Give us plainish landscapes and let us make the gameplay.. just give us more toys to do with with.

Well Anet did say they want to make defending and holding objectives more important. I hope that they will at the same time consider how to fix the “coverage wars”, which there are several suggested fixes, most of them being detrimental to the importance of “night crews”, which might kitten off many people, but I don’t think it was Anet’s original intention that servers could only compete if they hired a lot of people from outside their own region’s timezone.

Who’s night crew? My night or yours? :P (By the way, my night= NA Prime time.)
I think the night crew does well, considering the game is world wide, and each player in a different region has a different “Night” then the rest.
Heck even some within the same regions have different “nights”. ^.~ I wouldn’t want my gaming time to be less worth while then others who live around me yet play during “prime time” because they can with their jobs.

I agree the move to MOBA like mechanics might bring a lot more players to sPvP. Still, the few hundred you mentioned is a grain of sand compared to the hundreds of thousands of PvE players Anet is trying to keep playing by offering them enough content.

Don’t get me wrong. I would absolutely LOVE for Anet to give us PvPers (and WvWers if you want to separate them) loads and loads more content, especially when PvP content has generally a lot more longevity due to the unpredictability of the battlefield. I’m however also a realist, and understand that in order to run a successful business, Anet needs to cater to their core audience first and foremost.

You could think about it also in a positive way. Because of those hundreds of thousands of PvE players we have this game in the first place and they can give us crumbs of updates every now and then.

Happy to get something new. Though I’m also skeptical about the introduction, but will reserve the judgement until we find out more at PAX East.
I just really hope that nothing is taken away when this is introduced. Like when they removed TA fw/fw path to replace it with Aetherblades. My fear is that they might remove EB in favour of the new map. Which would make me a sad panda.

If they put in a new map, there might be coverage and population issues, at least in the Bronze. But I’d rather deal with that than yet even more content removal.

Was thinking of the same, all you guys said was that there going to be boons due wich castle is owned an SM defense gona change due those boons, like the EOTM castles areas have, but i really hope in a refresh design ^^ dont forget that there are only 2 tiers in wvw with alot of people to, im really hyped to the wvw map (finally something hyped me in gw2 after release).
