This poll was messed up from the start in all honesty. The wording of it, the announcement that there would be another poll about removing dbl in the future instead of before this poll.

Sorry everyone who likes dbl and those that worked on it, now I am forced to vote to remove it entirely. I could have lived with a 2alpine/1dbl implentation, but 3 months of all borderlands being dbl, nope not again.

IKR and we will never get a new map because anet will not want to risk going through this again. GG anet for the poorly constructed poll and gg players for consigning WvW to becoming stale very quickly.

Tyler and Anet I would recommend you revisit this poll after the poll on the DBL and specifically state that you will be doing so in the DBL poll because this poll was so poorly done that the results are questionable.

Your gonna find out eventually but thought I would add, they are going to remake and redo this poll. And have the dbl poll next.

A three-fourths supermajority vote is an extremely rare requirement in most modern democracies.

I get that Anet is trying to ensure that vote results reflect a majority opinion by setting a high threshold, yet supermajority voting is commonly criticized as empowering the minority opinion.

Which is exactly what happened here. 31% won the vote (3 month rotation).

That’s how we ended up with the dbl/HoT disaster. WvW is a sandbox and requires a light touch. Trying to shape it to fit their vision by shoehorning in a bunch of gimmicks is not what is right for the game mode and the community.

FYI you didn’t pay for the new borderlands with the expansion because it was given to all accounts, including the free ones, it was just thrown in there as an ad for the expansion. Just as silverwastes and dry top were free and not paid for by the expansion.

The DBL disaster happened due to them misinterpreting feedback then not listening to player feedback at all during the beta. There’s a difference between having the entire direction of the mode dictated solely by player polls and listening to feedback and analysing it properly. I agree with Demonninja that this poll direction at such a granular level is an overreaction and almost an abdication of responsibility.

Is it just me or does there seem to be only 1 solution 2 ABL – 1 DBL? Personally I do not like DBL’s but with only 1 in the mix seems fair to all. Anything else and I will be forced to vote to get rid of it.

Would it not be easier to have this poll first instead?

A) Take DBL back to beta to be reworked and retested until the community votes that they enjoy playing on it and it is ready to go live.

B) DBL is ready and should be brought back to live game.

In addition, It is awesome Anet is using polls, but they need to get this a bit more organized first. I do hope they do not become disheartened with this poll mess and stop using surveys all together. I really think they should go back to doing it the way they did to create the game via email surveys instead and for WvW content just email surveys with write in options as well to all wvw players over a certain rank since these polls currently can actually be used by the same player who has accounts on every server so like one player gets to vote as many accounts as they have. Of course they can have multiple accounts with higher WvW ranks, but they will have a lot less of them than the ones with low ranks as these polls currently do.

I think I could have lived with having one less borderland to visit knowing that some people enjoy the DBL, but the thought of having a 3 month period of only DBL fills me with dread and I have no choice but to vote to have the DBL scrapped in the next poll.

I’m really sad to see people from my server complaining about borderlands: some just quit because ABL are back, just as others had quit when DBL were up…

I guess, even though you didn’t reach 75%, the majority of voters want mixed borderlands, and it’s the best solution to make everyone happy imho: you can play on the borderland you prefer, and that’s it ^^

I’d advise that the WvW Forum be treated like a bunch of Back Seat Drivers.

The actual driving needs to be done by ANet.

Be firm & take your time responding to us.

That’s quite a big evidence of the big flaw in those polls. You devs shouldn’t vote in those polls like every other players does, for the sole reason you’re involved in the process, and thus can’t truly express your opinion. I mean :

• You were working on the “no” option, and made the “no” option default should there not be a super-majority. This should imply you may not vote, because a “default” option should be the one the devs stick to. Then I can understand you ask for a high threshold to change what the plans are
• If you’re allowed to vote against what you’re currently doing, then you should only ask for a qualified majority, since the B-plan is strongly envisionned, and you may treat yourselves with special-votes (that would count twice or somthing like this).

Voting against your own plans shows obviously that you don’t like what you’re doing, and eventually you won’t do something as good as if you truly were enjoying it or for the slightest believing in it.
You had an idea of mixed bordelands, that you liked and voted for, that 70% of the community liked, that you said could lead to further developpement of new maps… What do you need more ?

I just hope the next poll on this topic will put things back to common sense.

What rework would u possibly want? they made it easier to navigate beaquse apparently peep have alzheimers who play wvw and forget where to run. They removed the meta event, yes it caused major lag for all parties. Yes they could make north towers position more strategic but why would that be a problem, the vocal cry baby minority only likes to fight on open fields with no structures so why do they care.

If the map is retained it will make much people embittered … and if the map is removed it will make a lot of people disappointed … .No consensus or compromise and necessarily dissatisfied people to the exit.

Furthermore a removal of DBL may make it harder to take the risk of creating a new map later…In that case I hope people really love ABL as they risk to play with it a very long time.

8 months … DBL isn’t old days

And the paradox is that it was designed to answer to a lot of players’ requests:
- Decrease the influence of the zerg play style on the score
- Make the Attack of the gate a less obvious option
- …

Sure having them together with old maps would have been a good compromise and a potential window to the creation of a 4th map (see some posts of the team).

Well the result is here and we will see the futur, but be sure that as some people didn’t apreciate the complexity of DBL mechanism some other people bored on old maps and mechanical dating back to the beginning of the game.

You also need to get someone with a Psychology or Sociology background to write your Poll questions because the bias and confusion inherent in your questions actually manipulated the results – which you then FURTHER manipulated by going with the minority decision.

I would like either option but a better example/explanation of the plan would be more informative. On my server there is probably a 50% split of people who won’t play the DBL. When our most popular commanders switch from EBG to DBL they lost almost half of the group.

I missed the last poll but based on the response I think it would be best to not use the words Yes or No for selections unless it is actually a yes or no question. Use bullet style selection with a description instead or something similar to avoid confusion.
Some people just don’t think about the selection as hard, which makes the polls end up biased when they read the question quickly and misunderstand it.

Would also be nifty if there was an option to have these polls sent to email or sms so when we’re on vacation we know about them.

I don’t see how, the maps are extremely similar. Full of PvE gimicks, there is no strategic positioning, caters to k-trains. Maybe they can toss something in the middle of the dbl that lets you transform into rocket shooting bugs or whatever the hell it is eotm players enjoy.

“I’ve worked 1 year photoshopping this background image for the desert borderlands and now you want me to start over and make a background image that will fit with 2 different maps? I was just 3 months away from being ready to release it”

And then the other Anet person said:
“Ok we’ll scrap the previous poll and invent some new type of democracy or something, keep up the good work.”

I think Anet highly expected the majority of the votes would be for 2/1 borderlands rather than the 3 month rotation, basically 5% of the votes would go on to screw this up.

I know they want to get the community involved for major changes, but I think this was one that just needed to be implemented right away to see how it worked out.

I don’t get this either – by setting it to 75/25 you’ve just given yourself another 51/49 situation except even more ridiculous. 70/30 is really not that ambiguous.

As for desert borderlands, I would be really disappointed if that was removed – since the switch back, I’ve barely touched the borderlands at all because I’m just so bored of them.

No screen for me, and not the same matchup (AR, AG and JS last week) yet the same figures. Never more than 10 ppl on 3/4 maps at 9PM and no queue at all at 10PM.

I think requiring 75% majority to act is way too high especially when the two options favoring mixed borderlands came in at 70%. 60% seems like a more reasonable threshold to act upon. And like others have said, polls shouldn’t be the prime decision maker for wvw design, it’s a tool and one that isn’t overly suited to complex topics. IMO written feedback is just as important as polls probably more because it can give insight into why players want something, and way deeper detail on what they are concerned about.

Good points. WvW would have turned out to be a very different game if the “capture the flag” mechanic was still in it.

The problem with DBL is that it tries to add all these random bonuses and side effects that just come off as gimmicky. It’s confusing to navigate and has far too many narrow passageways. Honestly it feels like EOTM. The originals are good because they’re simple, lack gimmicks, and promote open field fighting.

Hi guys, I just wanted to respond to a few concerns:

Why does this poll need a 75% majority?

• Honestly, we had a difficult time deciding if this poll should be decided by a simple majority, rather than a super majority. When we first decided to start polling, the team decided that whenever we are making a major change to the existing game, that change should require 75% of the community to agree to it. We wanted to avoid anything close to a 51/49 split. Mixed Borderlands definitely falls under the category of a major change to the existing game. However, what made the decision harder, was that polling only started relatively recently. Had this poll existed 6 months ago, before we ever started rotating borderlands, it likely would have been decided by a simple majority instead.

Why does this poll not have an option to remove the Desert Borderlands?

• As per the above, we require 75% to make a major change (like permanently removing DBL.) If we try to ask two, or more, 75% questions in a single poll neither is likely to achieve that requirement.
• Prior to this poll, the community reaction to the Desert Borderlands had seemed much more positive. Forum posts approved of the changes we had made to the map in the April 19th release, and were largely in agreement that the map had noticeably improved.
• We believed that those that were hostile to Desert would be less so if the Mixed Borderlands feature allowed Alpine to live in harmony with Desert, rather than replacing it for 3 months. So we wanted to provide this option before creating a poll about removing DBL altogether.

What’s next?

• We’ll poll the community to see if at least 75% of them would like to see the Desert Borderlands permanent removed. This won’t be next weeks poll, but likely the week after that.
• If players vote to remove DBL, then the results of this poll will be void (as we’ll only have one borderlands map.) Otherwise, we’ll move forwards with the results of this poll.

The poll has ended! After removing all votes for “Don’t Count My Vote” and combining the two “Yes” votes, the final results are:

69.7% – Yes (55% Double Alpine + 14.7% Double Desert)
30.3% – No

Since “Yes” to Mixed Borderlands did not received the required 75% of the vote, we’ll continue with the quarterly borderlands map rotation instead. Thank you to everyone who voted!
