WvW is dying
Maybe it’s related to this post?
I can only guess many of the hardcore WvW’ers decided the wait is too long and moved onto newer games?
I’ll make a couple of points here to hopefully clarify this issue.
1) It takes a very large amount of time and effort to make a new map. It’s definitely more than a 6 month process from start to finish. Especially if we are talking about building a new borderlands taking all the thing we’ve learned since the game came out into account. With that in mind it’s a big task. It took us a little under a year to get EotM built and shipped from conception to release. So that is a more reasonable timeline for a new map.
2) The area we added to Obsidian Sanctum was in progress prior to the incident mentioned above and, while it didn’t take a particularly large amount of time, was still a process of over a month. We don’t release map changes without thorough testing. Keep in mind that was just a small change to an existing map, not a completely new map.
3) We currently, unfortunately, don’t have the ability to rotate maps in and out of the game in the manner discussed above. We have talked about this concept many times and it is something we’d like to be able to do long term, but it is not a small task given the technical structure of our game.
All of those things being true, we absolutely want to make new maps for WvW and when we have them ready to talk about and show off, believe me we will. It’s very important to us that when we do release a new WvW map it is a clear example of what we think the ideal WvW map would be. That means we will test the heck out of it and do everything we can to make sure it is even more awesome than the current maps. I realize this isn’t a timeline or an answer to where are more maps, but it’s as much as we can give you right now and it hopefully gives some insight to the size of the task. As I said, as soon as we have more to talk about or show, you will hear it.
I used to do WvW a lot, but now I basically just live in EOTM because there’s more to do and more enemies. I still have nothing good to spend 42k badges on either. WvW needs some sort of reward track like PvP, or some unique armor/weapon skins that cost thousands of badges. Like branded armor or something epic.

Not satisfied with the badge armor that you can’t recover your runes from?
WvW might have a bit fewer people now. But that might have to do with several things:
1: It is summer.
2: There is no Season going on.
3: There haven’t been any big updates in the game for some time, so people don’t play much overall.
I also seem to recall having posts about WvW is dying basically at the same day the game was released, and yet it is still there with rather long queues at times.

Most people are taking a break it seems. If ANet at the very least, changed the conditions for victory, that would be a major deal. The PPT system is pretty blah for large battles. I really don’t think adding a new map is what WvW is lacking. It’s the stale zerg 2 win, karma train.
There’s just nothing to look forward if you’re a WvW player. Absolutely nothing.
Devs themselves show little to no interest in WvW, no one comments anything, no one talks about anything, valid constructive criticism and suggestions are being ignored.
WvW top priority isn’t a new map, it’s the fix of PPT system which has been asked since the day one.
And no one wants Season 3 except for PvErs who just want to farm some APs.
Man…. Yet here i am preforming CPR for over a year now trying to keep hanging on..
“it is even more awesome than the current maps”
I hope this is just Newsspeak because he can’t say the current maps are unimaginative and rather dull.
E.A.D.
Tons of GW2 players are currently playing wild star
If it did not go from taking over maps and such to running down small groups to people alone with 60 or more people it might be a bit better but my first two attempts at it where my last two cause all people cared about was being in a train of 70 people to attack one person waiting for them to come back and attacking them again for no other reason then they where there and could attack them. Could have been a group of level 80’s and I was only a level 30 I decided then that world completion was not worth even trying. People where just being bullies and went from the idea of the game to just pushing people around.

dying again? dying in a different way than it has been dying for the past 2 years? zombie invasions?
Sorry but with all this and that is dying or killing something else you really need to clarify which variant of dying or dead or soon dead is involved.
I might be missing something but the times I’ve played you just get in a zerg and take places while the other team takes places you just left. I just dont get the reason people play the grind.

I would have to disagree with you on this, people are getting bored, I’ve seen major WvW guilds transfer servers to find excitement in new blood or because with recruitment drying up and dissolving or going to play other games like wildstar.
A known issue with WvW guilds is that you always bleed members because they get bored of either WvW or the game itself and you have to keep recruiting. So a guild’s constant presence is not a health indicator for the state of WvW.
A good example is SoR’s demise to the point of going from kitten being one of the worst servers for WvW, a massive exodus caused by the main guilds leaving the server or game because they got bored. I’m still playing the game, but the skill level in WvW has considerably dropped since the good days and the mode is boringly stale after 2 years of the same thing.
WvW guilds come and go. The same WvW guilds that played the game back at release are not playing now, but others have taken their place.
That is just how life is, groups come and go, but the actual amount is usually around the same.

Lordkrall, the gamemode of WvW is unfortunately dying guilds are going down all over the place, the amount of players is decreasing in WvW.
At the moment the laddersystem is broken as after season2 there was a lot of transfers around and a lot of the servers in gold league in EU is more dead than most servers in silver league.
Gandara at the moment really dont have bad queue’s atm, it’s barely just EB that has a queue during primetime, and maybe another border now and then, depends on the day. Which is pretty much exactly the same as Aurora Glade had for 1 month ago. Difference is, AG is ranked nr 15, Gandara is ranked nr. 5 and the difference in players is not very much.
Yes it is summer and there is less people playing due to that ofc, but in general the the playerbase of WvW is declining, and there is been done nothing to keep the players in the game. However Anet is putting in season to try to make some of the PvE players into WvW players. However this is a very slow and long progress, and it’s working slower than the amount of players moving on to other games. Therefore the player base in WvW is reducing in total.
Which again, is pretty normally now that the game is around 2 years old and the amount of players normally lowers over the years to go. But if Anet want’s to keep this game active it needs to introduce/create something new that keeps players interest in the game, more than it is at the moment, as it will be new games coming out where they communicate with the player base more. Even before the game has come out into alpha and beta, some of the companies have listened more to the PvP players than what has been done in this game for 2 years unfortunately.
But it will be interesting to see if Anet actually is willing to put in the effort to save a already dying gamemode.

And yet the same has been said about WvW since release, and yet WvW is still alive, so clearly it is not dying as much as people try to suggest.

When something is dying/bleeding it does not happen instantly, but over time.
Look half a year back in time and the top 6 servers in EU would have queues and guilds on all maps during primetime.
Ath the moment you are lucky to have 2 borderlands with people on it + EB.
If that is not a proof of dying, then I dont know what needs to be said to convince you

It is rather unfair however to compare a point in time that was in the middle of winter when traditionally people play more with the middle of summer.
Comparing it to a year ago on the other hand and we had about the same situation as we have now.
Sure it might be a sign of it dying, but it has been going up and down in waves since release, and people have used the same argument since release about it dying.
If it were dying already back then it is extremely unlikely that it would still be alive now 2 years later.

It all depends on the measures that’s been used to keep it alive, which have worked from Anet’s side, which is good.
But there is a certain amount of PvE players that will turn over to PvP players, and I’m pretty sure that the limit has been reached very soon, and the numbers of people in WvW will sooner or later reach a drastic fall in activity, no matter if it’s winter or summer

Seasons artificially inflate the player base of WvW with PvErs who just want their achievements done and after that they don’t play WvW anymore.
The number of hardcore WvWers is decreasing.

but only the first days
i did my archievements the first 2 days and joined never again
wvw is boring – always same – all run in a zerg and spam #1
remove all aoe and bring friendly fire^^ – and you will never see zergs bigger than 5 again and wvw could be fun
30 seconds in if the time link doesnt work properly.
Sounds like a good time to get map completion since there is hardly anyone there to bother me while I do….Hates WvW and the forcing of Map completion through it. But if its dying then maybe I can get it and run before it picks back up lol.
“Nothing is true! Everything is Permitted!”
these people who don’t know what to spend BoH annoys the hell out of me…
spend it on siege and give it to your commander!!!!
The only time I go into eotm is to get BoH after I run out of siege.
I play T1 wvw… and it is far from dead
I think too many ppl confusing gvg with wvw in this game

What is BoH? Been here a while but still cannot get these abbreviations down. And I do not have a commander So hard to give them to them if I had them.

People have been saying it forever. It goes up and down.
WvW is going to be very deserted for the majority of the summer I imagine. With major fluctuations in server activity. Right now on Jade Quarry, we are constantly outnumbered (or at least in EBG, where I spend most of my time) while the other two servers seem to be running 50+ man zergs.
Bear in mind that isn’t a complaint, just an observation, and I really feel that this will continue for the next couple of months. Who knows, next week it might be us that outnumbers them, I don’t know.
Either way, I wouldn’t say WvW is dying it’s just less active because of summer and the recent PvE release (Dry Top.)

Biggest problem, at least on my server, is that we can no bring PvE players into WvW by letting them know we are doing a golem rush or that commander X is taking a bl etc.
I don’t understand why cities have to be on megaserver, it’s not like you need more people to be able to do inventory management or shop on trading post.

I’ve been here and in WvW since the very beginning. I’ve periodically kept an eye on the forums and seen all the numbers of ‘WvW/the game is dying’ threads and never bought in to all the hooplah.
However, I can attest that now it is different. The slow attrition that has been going on for the past couple of years is finally starting to make a dent and even some of the die-hards — the most loyal fans of WvW and the game — are starting to pack it up and move on.

On TC, we seem to be outnumbered 3 out of the 4 maps, and lately I havn’t seen us tick higher than 175. I do believe, this will continue long through summer. I know of a couple of large guilds that have left the game permanently.
so the only thing worth coming back and playing is dying… guess i’ll go enjoy zerg based pve or raid world bosses with a group of randoms woot. /o/

I had to but in to say that T2 has been awesome this week. I hope Mag, SoS and us FA keep this even. Right now, SoS is pushing really hard to earn an extra 2000 points to surpass FA, even though I have work now; I’m very tempted to log on, to try and fight them back a bit and prevent them from overtaking us.
Basically, a competitive match-up is a fun match-up. And while it only looks like T2 is balanced this week, I feel like it is possible for other match-ups as well. Most fun in Wvw I’ve had since the first time FA fought HoD. Slaughtering them by the hundreds, felt like a member of the 300… XD

I haven’t seen any proof of this posted by ANET, they are very tight lipped on player numbers and their playing times. If you have seen any numbers posted please share them,

It’s a thing that happens to more MMO’s. People tend to play games more when the weather sucks ( think autumns and winters ) As of now its summer so people going to the beach or on holidays.

It is not a GW2 specific thing. It happens to ALL games, simply due to the fact that people (for some weird reason) want to spend time outside when it is nice weather.

The world doesn’t share the same season and weather patterns with your local area, the earth isn’t flat.
Many people wont have the same seasonal reasons to go out side as you do. Again it would be nice of you to share this information about Guild Wars 2 having reduced players during certain months that you talk about, I think a lot of people would like to see it

Exactly, when both season 1 and 2 hit you had 50+ queue on BL, 100+ on EB.
The “problem” is people get their achievements and get outta there, and then you have the dedicated players trying to cover 3BL, EB annnnd EOTM, so no wonder right now with no achievements to get the game mode feels a bit dead, but rest a sure there are still plenty of people, you should see the freaking blob SFR had going yesterday.

Says the person on the server where one is alone a lot of the time Pacific time days.
This isn’t about matchups, but Anet wants to make it about matchups so they can close threads.
It’s about there not being anyone on the maps besides one player, me, on many of the maps, a lot of the time during the day US Pacific, and it’s getting worse.
This is one of dozens where there are no more than 15 of us but 50+ of “them”.
The pic is one of many times I am with one or two others or completely alone. It’s more than frustrating – it’s depressing and disheartening.
Apparently Anet doesn’t care just how alone anyone is on any of these maps.

He is, however i have to agree with his points here, MMO’s usually are “dying” in summers as people spend time outside and on holidays. Does not apply to all world parts but at least thats what happens on EU servers in my opinion. Playing MMO’s for lots of years now and its usually the same, no matter if it gw2, or not.
