WxP Ranks - Do we really need them?

Well before the ranks were added people were complaining about no progression in WvW, so no matter what they do there will be unhappy players.

WxP ranks are fine. If you don’t have the mastery then don’t get on siege. Simple as that. What is the big deal if someone asks you to get off the ram, etc? No one WANTS to sit there and ram a gate… but those who take it upon themselves to put 3 ranks into ram mastery SHOULD be the ones on the rams. They spent their hard earned points to provide a service to the server… why should you or anyone deny them their role in that? (edit: this goes for any siege…just used rams as an example)
The only reason I can see where this is an issue is for PvErs who want their demolition achievement… which honestly, why should we care about that?

Did anyone ask for progression? I don’t remember too many players saying it was the biggest issue. I do remember people talking about skill lag, server population, class balancing, lack of new maps, a horrible commander system, hacking, and too much pve in WvW.
I’m fine with all the ranks, ’cept the guard buffs. What is that, like 200 hours of game time so that 1 of your characters can have stats on par with someone else?
i like them myself, if you look at the max levels of those skills – it’s as if they planned a whole new level of strategy – what i don’t like is feeling like i’m cheating my main character out of progression every time I play another character. It’s not like i’m going to play the same way on every character – my low armor characters will probably spend more time on ranged sieges , where as my high defense characters can do the flame rams and sieges on the field where it’s easier to attack me. I won’t be a geek gawd just because all my alts share my wxp – they would all have their weaknesses and unique purpose.
Ranks are a very good idea, but 10k ranks (?) … while character bound ?
Either have 10k ranks and make it acc-wide… or have like e.g. 500 ranks and make the ranking progress harder and more time consuming (acc-bound, like pvp ranks).
What we currently have is incredibly dumb imo.

PvP ranks are account bound just fyi, so WvW being char bound is doubly stupid.

the real problem again, is the score……. I see what anet is working at – making a 3rd pvp choice of pve mixed with pvp – the problem is the scoring tilted the scales to competition and totally killed the story / rpg value of wvw – so instead of it being a complete storyline with pvp involved – it’s a half finished competitive arena without a real story.
Bad for new players/alts and bad for the game — especially considering how OP a few of these are (ram mastery, guard leech, applied fortitude)
I like mastery, too. It gives you a way to specialize your role on the team. I hope ANet opens up a few more ranks on some of them.
I think they are a good thing since there needed to be some kind of progression. I need something to work towards or it becomes too pointless for me. I get bored with a character soon after I hit 80.
I would have quit the game a long time ago…oh wait. I did quit for about 8 months and find I am having a lot more fun with WvW ranks. I feel like I am still accomplishing something even in lopsided matches were I am mindlessly zerging and taking stuff by beating on doors.
No we don’t. They’ve poisoned the meta with WxP farming.
I think anet didn’t implemented it right, Wxp promote mindless zerg.
Some people need it to feel they are accomplishing somenthing, but it gave Anet the tools to start the so loved Korean farm.
I’m liking ac and treb mastery. It enhances my defensive style of play. It is fun to send an assault dodging and running for cover.
So many threads in the past few weeks that are clear indications of PvE players unsatisfied that their first foray into WvW has shown them that they need to work to become a valuable player, and can’t just berserker-facetank through every challenge…
If you don’t have mastery, get the kitten off the siege.
If you want to play with the siege engines, you have to earn the privilege by investing some time in learning about WvW and building up your masteries.
Also, for the record, your own team mates cannot see your rank, only enemy servers. If they’re telling you that you need to get off the siege it’s because they’re watching the door that you’re ramming and seeing that you are not applying another stack of structural vulnerability when you hit it, or the fortified wall of the enemy keep isn’t moving enough when your shots strike it. If the commander is committing to taking a tower, keep, or castle, he’s perfectly within his rights to expect that people who know what they are doing are on the important jobs. In other words, the “rank” itself is superfluous, people are looking at whether you have the appropriate masteries — and you don’t.
I guess i just love to play different characters. When I have 5 characters with each at about 40 ranks, i just feel like i’m going no where.

Most people have made the conscious decision to rank one or two characters. If what you claim regarding your ranks is true, you should have nearly 200 ranks (nearly, because the first 4 ranks have a faster progression). Where one person may have specialised, you diversified, and you’re suffering from being a jack-of-all-trades, master-of-none.
Sadly, that’s just the way it works. If you want full masteries on a character, focus on them.
Progression is fine. All they need to change it to be acc bound.

This is the new mentality with WvW. I UNDERSTAND that with ranks people want mastery only, but maybe there is that one guy that comes to WvW to play with their WvW guild and have large pvp and SIEGE battles. To the players who want progression fine, but make it an achievable goal, idk maybe account bound ranks that have been requested almost since WxP has been introduced.

Yes we do need them, but they need to be made more meaningful. Splitting wxp amongst all involved would go a long ways towards helping this. As it is right now you can just farm wxp with a zerg just running around flipping objectives with almost no real challenge and everyone in said zerg gets just as much wxp kitten people would get if they did it.

Birthday bonus can give you 50 ranks or possibly more in its duration if you’re with a good karma train commander.
1 day = 24 hours = 50++ ranks
you can get applied fortitude when you’re Champion. So that’s about 2 days of splendid runs. And that is on primetime weekend.

It’s not really going anywhere. It’s kind of been a mess since day 1, but I don’t see them removing it.
Even changing it to have an upward curve, a limit of total # of ranks, or be account bound is a mess and may be off the table….we might just have to live with it?
Put down your own superior siege, now nobody can kick you off!

And sadly, I think the motivation is PR and to avoid people calling it a grind. An upward curved system like every other game that does this would have been more alt-friendly AND allowed individual progression… but they were afraid because people would say it’s a “grind”. (Because of course, those abilities are so awesome you need them to compete…)
i like the ranks, but accountbound doesnt make that much sense.
lets say u have a main. u play it a lot in wvw and build it for cata, siegemight, ac, ram and treb mastery, because u siege a lot.
now u make a thief and wanna roam, u might wanna go for guardleech and applied fortitude.
i think anet wants to make it like this:
a wvw rank is character bound, because each character has a different role. so my mes is good at siegeing, but maybe i zerg more with my warrior and therefore build it more with applied fortitude and guardleech, siegebunker.
they want each character to earn their ranks, which sorta makes sense. so if u wanna run fotm builds and have to make a new class, then u gotta earn your guadleech and applied fortitude…

I think that most people logically would rather buff something over time until it feels right rather than introduce constant nerfs. Also I think allowing you to buy it may be more about removing badges introduced from achievement chests not increasing wxp rates. And sadly I think many people would agree with you that its a grind. Despite the fact that a level 0 character can contribute equal amounts to a team with a few vets on it.

forums are made for feedback, usually people leave feedback when something bothers them about the game so it is fine if ppl cry here reagrdless if they are wrong or not

In general, WXP ranks are good.
Guard defense/killer lines are questionable. But considering that ascended weapons are also in WvW, it’s a good counter balance for those of us who don’t have this gear.
