why can't we see the enemy name ?
Much more bullying in WvW, I guess if they could see your name then they wouldn’t have to take the trouble to block + remind name + unblock + whisper and thus would lead to more ragging
[RUN] solo/duo roamer
Partly to make it harder for trolls to single out targets for abuse, and perhaps also partly to make it harder for groups to identify the enemy Commander and take him out so as to deprive the enemy zerg of leadership.
Abuse, trolling, bad sportmanship and all that, it happens enough in WvW even through blocked whisper lists.
I just hopped into pvp match just now and the qq was pretty bad itself. -.-
Plays completely opposite professions to his main Teef.

Well then why is it enable in spvp? and in e-sports? and like every other mmo? If someone is trolling you you can just block him lol.
I find this so cool because like the whole mindset it gives is “hordes of faceless and nameless enemies”. Also, just seeing their rank helps to identify which server they are, and fast. Overall, I would never want this feature changed
I think it’s very much to prevent singling out commanders and what not. I mean it’s not that hard to find the commander but it still takes some awareness that wouldn’t be required if it just was “look for the name, everyone get the target, when they go in, everyone bomb him”. You have to wait for them to initially engage and see the front runner and assume it’s the commander. Then they veil and you have to do it again unless you remember his title and character look and can distinguish him quickly after the veil.
That is, I think it’s the purpose it serves, might not be the initial idea behind it though.
If you went up against any enemy zergs with devs in them in the recent “adopt a dev” thing, you probably noticed how it’s extremely tempting to focus that dev tag (and, at least on my server, there have been several occasions where we engaged an enemy zerg for the sole purpose of stomping a dev tag).
I assume it’s to prevent enemy commanders from being so easily spotted. We have to know what they look like, their guild tag, and rank in order to spot them, and that’s not always easy in the middle of a fight. If you could see names, it would be ridiculously easy to focus them. It happens a fair bit right now, but it would be so much worse if we could just hone in toward a name.

Imagine the commander has to go through hundreds of harassment whispers from a dozen of nameless people during the fight. Being a commander, they have to keep their channel open for scout reports, etc., so it wouldn’t be wise to stay invisible to have a peace of their mind.

The enemy seen the commander would actually bring more strategy to the fights. In the mid of a stacked hammer train it would still be hard to notice him by the name anyway. Maybe disable intraserver whispers when inside a wvw map could solve the trolling problem and let us see the enemy name. It would make the game more competitive, player can build a good or bad reputation.
Actually, Iris probably has the answer right there. “Hey, so-and-so is their Commander! Everybody spam them non-stop with useless messages to try and annoy them enough so they’ll quit the battlefield!”
It actually had happened to Jang Gun during the prime time of War Machine. Poor guy, I feel bad thinking about it >.<
Also, I play in a sniping team and have no trouble spotting and taking a commander down. So I don’t see the issue with seeing the enemy’s name here.
Plus, good commanders are already recognized across the servers without the necessity of name-calling in game.

If you could see the PMs I get after enemies attempt to join my party you would know exactly why we cannot have nice things like this.
The last one was from a player in the PRAE guild. After killing a thief and necro in hylek, this guy shows up and we proceeded to have a nice little fight with my test build. I couldn’t kill him and he couldn’t kill me… that is until two more of his friends show up. I put one down, nearly kill the other before they kill me. This guy attempts to join my party, gets my name and starts trash talking. Five minutes later I run into him with his friends and peel him like a banana. He then starts the trash talking again. As per my usual reaction, I do not reply and now hunt their guild without mercy.
“Youre lips are movin and youre complaining about something thats wingeing.”

So the current system fails to prevent the communication between the 2 servers because they can get your name via party invite or block list. Wouldn’t it be better to officially implement it anyway?
About spam the cmd with whispers: the commander probably is giving the orders on TS and has 1 or more players to type stuff for him on map chat. He also can just disable whispers at one chat tab and just read map/team/normal chat.

No thanks, i don’t want to see your ‘real’ name. I see an enemy (aka. you) passing by, i kill the enemy (aka. you) and i keep walking. No need to see your name.

Because WvWvW is serious business. sPvP is for fun.
So, when the real necknames will be avialible in the WvW?

They won’t
Because people would say “mean” things to other people if they knew their ingame names.
If we can see their name in spvp is there any good reason for not do the same in wvw? You can still send a whisper blocking and getting their name anyway. It feels more like pvp fighting someone you can recognize by the name, not just a faceless enemy. Pretty much almost all the games let you see the enemy name in pvp I dont see what is the point of hiding the enemy name.
Because we don’t have enough adult players and I don’t mean the age?
In GW1 knowing your enemy’s name was half the fun….I made some great friends chatting with Luxons when I played Kurzick…and vice versa.
People need to get a thicker skin…someone PM’s you and says mean things…then block them. Easy peasy.

True ppl need thicker skins but, more importantly, they need to grow up.
I don’t get why you can talk to your opponents in PvP in the first place… It makes sense to me that you can’t see your opponents names in WvW because of the reasons others have listed above. Trolling and the like. PvP is just as bad if not worse than WvW in terms of toxicity so I seriously will never understand why we can talk with our enemies in it or why we can even see their names. I’m guilty of having a short temper and I’m not ashamed to admit it because we all get frustrated from time to time. I have only myself to blame for the things I’ve said but it would make life easier if I couldn’t so freely say those things to my opponents..
