The real views of the candidates
They arent real people…
They arent real people…
I take it you don’t really get into character much.
Well if you look at it this way then Kiel as a soldier-type brute force approach person that didnt even want to be captain but was forced into the role is both unprepared and unsuitable for the council position, as well as lacking the ambition to do well in it beyond “Ellen Smash”.
Evon seems to be more at home in such an environment, and tying him and his vast organization closer to LA would be a smart move by the other captains.
Not on the forums, no. If Anet wants to write some actual characters and give them actual views like the OP describes that would be great, I would probably be one of the few who actually reads them but they are just cardboard cutouts atm with a few lines and the barest hint of character. Anet would have to write their butts off if they want people to actually vote in character.
Having said that the OPs request is reasonable and something I would actually like to see, and my snarky response was inappropriate, so I apologize. The braying #vote kiel/#vote Evon rubbish is already seriously getting on my nerves, Im probably going to play the next two weeks with map chat turned off to avoid it but thats no reason to take it out on somebody who is getting into it.
Well it’s a different approach at the least. I can understand that it’s not for everybody. That said, the subforum name itself says we get to make a choice that impacts the future of Lions Arch. While that might be marketing fluff, I care to think there will be some sort of significant impact and so the characters do matter.
It was just something I was curious about, tbh. I’m aware that it’s a videogame, but generally candidates for a position of power have a bit more background than “I is giving you free and new stuff”.
Silly roleplaying me, I know
I would also very much like it to be the case that there were some sort of lore/story significance to these sort of events. I dont hold out a lot of hope that it will be the case though. I generally really like getting into character in RPGs but I just cant manage it in MMOs. The world is too artificially constructed, the characters generally paper thin and the logic behind things too clearly dictated by the meta, rather than in game factors. This isnt Anets fault though, if anything we the players are to blame with our joke names, insistence of sprinting through the content and refusing to sit for 2 minutes to read a bit of story or watch a cutscene.
Whenever I wander through a place in a deserted zone like Ebonhawke and notice all the little characterful touches and obvious care and attention that went into designing it I really feel sorry for the devs. Is it any wonder they make a stream of shallow, pointless minigames when we ignore their attempts to create something deeper?
I have to admit that GW2 is one of the first MMO’s which made me want to explore the lore and history. In previous MMO’s, the world just seemed too static to be really interesting. Here, I have to admit that when the PS changed focus from race politics to ED stuff, I still wanted to know what happened in my race’s hometown.
So in that way, I guess I got sucked into the world a bit more, which led to my question stated above.
Because the world is pretty layered and deep, and my friends and me have actually said that the world would be perfect for a tabletop RPG
I agree with you, why are players so focused on the short term and on mere fractal gameplay (while there’s a good portion of players who don’t frequent fractals), it is just such a small part of the game that isn’t significant. It’s almost like tunnel vision. A little bribery and gimmick and voters will flock to one party. Almost reminds me of real politics…
To me, the candidate who wins and will actually affect Lion’s Arch, whatever way Anet has cooked up for us will matter. Anet has made it clear and suggested this will influence the future events and development. there would be no point in our voting if this wasn’t the case. I really wouldn’t want a charr who controls our economy and our gold already to have more power to affect the entire city, i honestly don’t think it will amount to good.
Kiel has been fighting “for justice” along side our stories and involvement throughout the living stories, it is also sad that people eagerly choose a little bribe over potential good for the city. If we read sea of sorrows we will feel that patriotism, belonging with the founding of Lion’s Arch and what the kind of sanctuary and safe haven it stands for, not the focus on money.
There is also a bit of symbolism in here as well. Evon, and thus the Black Lion Company, are RNG.
A vote for Evon is a vote for RNG!
RNG is our friend, so your statement is OK.
Give or take.
#TeamKiel
And why is Evon RNG? I know the community as a whole seems to think so, since we buy gems through the BLTC, and keys, and boxes. But isn’t that just an easy “real-life” way of combining AH, and ingame store?
I mean, I’ve never seen Evon say ingame: “Arr, I luurve these lottery boxes, I love selling them to you idiots”
Just my two cents of course

Oh. It’s definitely a RL thing. But it’s the only way we can really “retaliate” against the practice.

I was asking for non-real life reasons to vote for one or the other, from my characters point of view.
While I don’t like RNG, my asura is kinda meh about it. She’s never bought one of Evon’s idiot traps, and she never will. But people have the choice to spend their money any way they want, according to her. But she would like to know what the candidates plans are for the future of LA, and Tyria.
As I said before, sille roleplaying me lol

Non-real life reasons? Hmm…
Kiel is more known as a competent Lionguard who assisted and lead multiple successful investigations. Evon is the leader of the Black Lion Trading Company, Kryta’s foremost merchant company. That is heavily simplified, of course, but covers the basics.

I know, I know. My point of the thread being that we don’t know anything about their politics or reasons why we should vote for them, except for the promised research.
But I realize I’m taking this too far probably.

This is one of the most respectful comments I have ever read on a forum

Kiel’s reason is apparent. Because she is being ‘asked’ to by Magnus. And noone says no to Magnus.
Evon’s reason is as apparent. Him getting on the council would expand his power, thus expanding what he could get away with trade-wise. Allow him to get an even firmer hold on all trade in Tyria.

It was officially stated that the politics of the candidate we pick might influence Lions Arch over the next years to come.
Vague as always but something to consider. Though I have a preference for Kiel atm, I’m not completely convinced she’d make a good politician. I think the choice between them boils down to either military support or financial/material support in further dragon campaigns.
Those are personal reasons. Let me explain it like this:
While I don’t care irl why someone entered politics, I do want to know what their plans are for the future. Are they planning on putting money in education, commerce, bureaucracy, etc. Those points are important (for me, and so for my character) when i decide who I’ll support
