Forced into even more WvW that I despise
I don’t like WvW. That said, I not only don’t mind that we must do WvW to get a Legendary but I think it’s the best way to do it.
Not to be circular, but Legendaries are legendary. I get that tons of people have them now that the game has been out over a year, and they’re not nearly as rare and prestigious than they used to be. That doesn’t change what they are. It represents mastery over Guild Wars 2. They are the ultimate status item and reward in the whole game. It only makes sense that it would require you to at least have a modicum of experience in each part of the game where you could display it. It absolutely should require both PvE and WvW.

“Forced”.
Because you need a legendary.
The whole point of Legendaries is that they require effort in various different modes of play. Extensive experience in one single mode of play is not what they’re about. They require dungeonrunning, and exploration, and WvW, and Karma… it’s the whole point! If you are really averse to a particular mode of play, you don’t need a legendary anyway!
Dude 30 ranks is not that big a deal at all.
You’re blowing this way out of proportion.
I don’t know what you are talking about, but being a little forced in WvW is better than solely being forced in PvE. The game has to adress both pve and pvp players.
Could no have said it better myself.
Back when the game first went in, you pretty much had to do at least some wvw (even if it was just going in and grabbing JP chests) to make a legendary because that was the only way to get your badges of honor. Once they added the AP chests with their copious amounts of badges of honor, you suddenly didn’t have to even set foot in wvw to get your Gift of Battle. I’m pretty sure that’s not what they were wanting (which seems to be definite, since they added the rank requirement now).
The game wants you to be well-rounded in nearly all aspects of it in order to create a legendary. And I don’t really have a problem with that. They want you to have run enough dungeons, done enough wvw, leveled at least the required crafting to make a portion of your legendary, gathered enough skill points, etc. I think it’s only fair that they have a wvw requirement. Just be glad they don’t make you do spvp, wvw, and pve for it.
Forced means compulsory which is to say required, and NOTHING in this game is Required; it is all desired.
You can get 30 ranks in WvW without ever WvWing. All you need do is achievements and save your badges of honor. It’s 2 laurels and 50 badges to get a potion in WvW that gives you a level. I do it almost every time it’s a daily.
It’ll take you some time, but I’m sure I’m approaching 30 levels.
Make sure you do your monthlies for the extra laurels. Badges of course come from achievement chests.
You are forced to do lot of thinks to get legendary battle thinky is like 1% of the loooong grind for it
People keep pointing out “hurr just buy the levels it’s only laurels”.
Yeah, the laurels aren’t the problem, it’s the fact each level also costs 50 BoH. If you’ve already made a couple of legendaries then you’re going to be pretty strapped on BoH, even with the ones from achievement chests.
Wut? This isn’t launch week, BoHs grow on trees these days. Spent a thousand the other day and will have made them back in no time flat. 50 BoH is nothing.
Legendary itself is a hard to get and the wvw part of it is not even half of what you need to do, if youre going to dedicated yourself to craft one just to look good, man up and stop complaining. Do what you have to do get it done and get over it. 30 ranks into wvw? really? I get 15 ranks a day just by zerging.
Great idea! PvP rank requirements for legendaries. Id support it.

Badges of jumping?

Yes, it has. It should do this separately for each mode, without forcing crossmode requirements that only make people irritated.
PvE people should not have to wvw. And wvw centered players should not have to pve. Its that simple. Whats so hard about that logic?
Basically, this.

You don’t even need to fight to get the golem parts. Most of the people don’t even know where to go anyway.

You got the golem parts. And you got killed by an invader and a general.
There were a whole group of players camping the location, waiting to kill everyone who wanted to get the Golem Parts. I was lucky to quickly snatch them up before they could kill me… but still they did kill me.
This is the perfect grief killing opportunity.

You’re only ‘dragged’ or ‘forced’ into content if you are chasing achievement points – which should not be how you play GW2.
Have the dev’s been made aware of this?
Forcing people to WvW is wrong, bad call in the end, I love WvW but I am clear headed enough to see it’s not everyones cup of tea.
This will simply drive off more players, all I can say is.. with that new MMO rolling in at the end of the next month, ANet better fix this problem and adjust their views on the current end game.
It’s clear we need two separate types of legendary weapons – one obtained solely from doing pve and one from doing wvw.
Three: One obtained solely from sPvP, if you want to be “fair” about it.
And we already have “legendaries” obtained solely from PvE. They’re called ascended weapons.
You don’t even need to fight to get the golem parts. Most of the people don’t even know where to go anyway.

Oh no! MQM dead? And just when Disney is releasing that biopic…
Seriously, 1st rule of WvW is to never run around alone unless you’re a supreme bad-kitten . Those ‘enemies’ understood this. At least you got the golem part and the ~1sp repair cost and some dented pride was a small price to pay. Hell, you pay more when jumping waypoints from boss-event to boss-event in PvE.

I think you don’t know what you’re talking about here guys, if someone love wvw then its ok, but I dont want to wait 20 hours in query because pve players that dont want to be here will farm rank they must have not want( geting rank 30 for legendary) . Most of you want some easy kills because pve players will dont know what to do in wvw …. I enjoy wvw but I dont like the way it will be connected to pve more than necessary, you forgot so fast what happened last time ?

Yeah, that darn Veteran Kodan! Strictly speaking, along with an enemy Invader and a General that makes it a griefing “group”…

And you way pointed back exactly like you would have anyway even if you didn’t get killed. Then you left the map never to return. Have you never ran to something and grabbed it pretty sure you were gonna die in game ?
Was it really that horrible?

Go and check that location yourself …
camped 24/7 for me, if it’s not my own server group, it’s the others, easy way to get kills i guess…
Even checked it out at 4am, and there were people camping it, kinda pathetic.
At rank 1000 the name of the legendary will change to ‘choo choo’.
LOL. Thank you.

I’m primarily PVE, only lv 32 WvW rank. I was 27 before the patch and gained 5 more levels because that was part of the new game. I think the change is great. To get world explorer you had to go into WvW anyway, and now instead of just waiting for your server to change colors to get the points you needed, you actually have to do something.
All your QQ are salty and delicious. If they made it rank 50, then I would be a little more miffed, but 30 just is a little time investment.

Sorry to hear that. i was trying to help dudes get to it when i was there. Was only ganked by one of them that didn’t understand that i wasn’t trying to fight him when i laid down. meh.

eh.. I just sorta said “well this content isn’t designed for me” and decided to do other stuff.
I only play sPvP and WvW, so I have little ambition of ever getting a legendary. I have six level 80s, and the most map completion I have on one of them is 40%. I despise doing guild missions, dungeons, fractals, world bosses, or map completion. It’s boring and no fun for me, so I have eliminated the possibility of ever getting a legendary from day one, and I’m alright with that.
Do I wish I had access to get one through sPvP and WvW solely? Yes, of course. But on the flip side, getting 30 ranks in WvW vs doing dungeons and doing map completion is nothing.
I’m pretty sure this was another move to have the same population spread out a bit more doing things, so they can come out with another report claiming, “Actually, we’ve seen population increase in this part of the game” like they did for sPvP last report, which is clearly and obviously untrue.

You now need Rank 30 in WvW to buy the Gift of Battle.
Glad I grabbed one ages ago…
BTW, you get a ton of badges from achievement chests. Should be more than enough if you’ve been playing a while.
As far as rank 30 goes, you can buy it with laurels. Will take about 60.
Oh joy, more mindless tasks to accomplish in pursuit of a legendary. Now I get to gather laurels and/or murder NPCs for some useless WvW ranks, sure glad I knew about this before the update.
…oh wait.
Seriously though, this couldn’t have been communicated? I can see why people are kittened off—it’s not because of the requirement, it’s because of the way Anet sneaked it into the patch and left us to figure it out for ourselves. Sure glad I was saving that bank slot!
Before I get hate from WvWers who might be too quick to say that I don’t deserve a legendary then, I’m in the process of crafting one, and I’ll get the requirements for it. I’m not upset about that. I’m upset because I feel like Anet was literally and deliberately hiding this for whatever reason, maybe out of fear of threads like this, who knows.
Now that that’s out of the way: I don’t mean for this post to be more hate against Anet. I want it to be something constructive about legendaries and how they should work. They shouldn’t work how they are now, and they shouldn’t even require as much PvE grinding as they do, because it is true that there’s unfairness on both sides as far as requirements go.
I proposed an alternative that would hopefully make both sides happy, but it was ignored and buried. So I’ll try it again, but in a separate post below.
As I said before, crafting a Legendary was initially supposed to show that you had mastery, or at least some participation, in all aspects of the game. This requirement is long overdue.
If a player hates WvW, I feel sorry for them, because they won’t be making a Legendary Weapon, and possibly Armor in the future. But at the same time, those who do participate and help their servers in WvW will be much deserving of their crafted Legendaries.
Let’s begin by (hopefully) agreeing that Legendary weapons should be challenging to obtain, not some grind fest. That said, I realize there will be some grinding, regardless. But what exists now isn’t challenging at all.
Now, my idea of a legendary weapon is something that existed in the past, some weapon wielded by a great warrior but was lost to time. I’m not sticking too religiously to this concept as all players have access to them, but bear with me:
I think there needs to be some material indigenous to WvW and to PvE that cannot be obtained in the other. Additionally, you would need to complete the Personal Story up to the point where you are initiated into an Order. After that, you will have a new questline, one that will lead you to your legendary once you hit 80.
Once you hit 80, you are beckoned to open the Gate to the Mists. This requires 500 of the WvW tokens and 500 of the PvE tokens, which are then crafted into keys for the gate. However, you need Master Craftsman for these, and for WvWers, there should be better ways to obtain materials, or a system with WvW specific materials separately.
Once you make the keys, you can enter the Mists, a true mix of PvE and WvW, where you can opt out of the PvP aspect. If you do, however, champions will be the normal mobs, and champions will be legendaries. No normal mobs, no vets, no elites. However, they should all be solo-able, albeit extremely difficult to kill and require lots of coordination with skills. You might even need to try 10, 15 times before you finally beat it. It would at least come close to mirroring the PvP aspect since human players are far more skilled than random moas in Brisban Wildlands.
You need to complete this map. The achievement for Exploration would be “Mist Cartographer” or some such title, and Been there, Done that would be something PvE related only. Once you complete the map, a new area opens, sort of like a dungeon, but again: solo-able.
This is where you find your legendary. You have to fight through more mobs (or players) and complete a series of story-like quests related to the weapon. Each one would have a different looking dungeon based on the weapon’s looks.
But this isn’t the end. You still need to research the weapon before you can wield it. This means getting the Been there, Done that achievement for PvEers and getting an equivalent combination of WvW achievements for WvWers (sorry, I’m not too familiar with these!). Maybe certain quests teach you a little history about the weapon, or at the very least, there are little places hidden around Tyria and WvW that tell you its history, and those would be required places to find.
Maybe it doesn’t seem like a good idea, maybe I’m missing some key concepts, and by all means, give feedback on it, suggest better options. I know it’s not the best thing in the world, but I think at the very least it makes things less heavy on PvE for WvWers and less WvW for PvEers, and that was the intent of this brainstorming.
TL;DR: I’m not against WvW; I’m against this rift that exists between PvE and WvW because of the unfairness being felt on both sides, and I wish obtaining legendaries was both more challenging and less dependent on both game modes.

But the point some people are making is that they don’t help their servers. For my part, I try to, but I usually just go about my map completing business. It isn’t fair to WvW that they’re being forced out of a queue by people who don’t want to be there and who (with exceptions, definitely) don’t help out.
The problem is, gaining a legendary doesn’t currently show mastery of any kind. The whole WvW should be required argument becomes a little contradictory in that, if it’s supposedly so easy to get what you need from WvW without encountering a single player to kill, then we haven’t mastered anything now have we? Unless you count the same activities we do in PvE “mastery” just because they were done in WvW, but that makes less sense than a polar bear in a sweater.

I agree, the requirements for making a Legendary just involve putting in time. I understand that there’s a demographic that doesn’t want the biggest carrot in the game to be difficulty gated. I get that it’s probably in ANet’s best interests that this be so. However, it does negate the idea that there’s any prestige involved. When I saw people in WoW with top tier gear (back at the start of Wrath), I thought, “These guys are mastering the current raid content.” If I see someone with a legendary in GW2, I think, “This guy sank a lot of time into the game.”
So, why not just have equivalent time sinks for both game modes? There could be some way that speeds the process up if you’re a completionist and obtain certain objectives in both WvW and PvE. That would please the PvE-only people – they could get theirs without having to do WvW. It would please WvW-only people, who would no longer be “forced” into PvE. It should also please completionists, who would gain an advantage for being completionists. Finally, it would provide an incentive to enter both game modes without the appearance of “forcing” anyone to play a mode they don’t like.
This is a disappointing update UNTIL you consider that a entirely new, permanent map was added in this update. By comparison, this update is exceptionally well polished as opposed to Lost Shores.
So, now not only do we need Badges of Honor from WvW for a Legendary, but we also have to have a certain WvW rank for it? Why not just add PvP Rank in there too?
Public Service Announcement:
You can obtain Badges of Honor from Achievement Chests.
You can gain ranks from Laurels.
You do not need to enter WvW, except for a brief moment to buy your Gift of Battle.

I don’t agree with getting ranks using Laurels. We need for force these players to touch every aspect of the game before being able to craft a Legendary.
Here are my ideas:
1) Require SPvP rank 10
2) Require WvW rank 50
3) Keep other Legendary mat requirement (250 of each T6, 77 Clovers, etc.) the same.
4) Keep Icy Runestone requirement
5) Keep Precursor requirement
6) Remove Legendary Weapons from the TP
Blah, us WvWers are “forced” into PvE for content all of the time. Want money? PvE. Want materials? PvE. Want content updates? PvE. Want to have some fun? WvW.
The percentage of WvW to PvE for a legendary is still incredibly PvE centered.

Just skip the achievement that requires entering that place.
It only took me one try and one repair bill to learn that.
Problem solved. Onto next LS update.

I was just pointing out these players saying they are “forced to WvW” are simply wrong.

And you forgot, you then need to waste laurels you need for ascended gear for levels instead. It’s not as easy as you people try to make it out so you can stop with the “buy levels” garbage, we have heard it dozens of times already and just because you keep repeating it does not make it any better.

I haven’t forgotten anything. Sorry that your Gift of Battle isn’t free anymore because you happened to do some PvE Achievements. You don’t have to do WvW, so you have nothing to complain about. If you want to save on Laurels, then go to WvW. The point is you have options, and have absolutely nothing valid to complain about.
However, ask a WvW’er what they need to do to get a Legendary. They have to go to Dungeons, and they would definitely spend Laurels as a substitute if they were given that choice. Either go to WvW or spend your Laurels. It’s ridiculous that the Gift of Battle was essentially free due to the Achievement chests.

Decide whether you want PvErs being forced to pretend they play WvW in order to get Legendary, or are you claiming that doing PvE for Legendary is something that WvWers do not want. You cannot have both.

I wonder how much tears there would be if you had to beat all SAB worlds in Tribulation Mode to get a Legendary… -evil grin-
Agreed, I truly dislike WvW. MIt makes no sense in capture this camp, leave, find another to capture and let the first one go back to whomever takes it again. Anyway…
My question is this: If I already have my Gift of Battle do I have to go back and get to rank 30? If I do, then I’ll bag the whole deal (was only waiting on map completion) Thanks
