I lay here, dying on the sand, from an unexpected onslaught. It was not Scarlet’s minions, nor the Miasma, that finally took me. With my last breath, I give a desperate warning before I depart to the Mist. Heed my words, Heroes of Lion’s Arch…
The Tengu are jerks!
I was a thief, using my stealthy skills to usher the citizens to safety. Dodging Aetherblade lasers and twisted Watchworks, the last thing I expected was a rain of arrows that literally KO’ed me in one strike. I’m not even the enemy!
Thanks for all your assistance Tengu, in Tyria’s time of need. I’m sure all the other races will manage just fine while you shoot down anything that comes within twenty feet of your walls.
How do they know you’re not the enemy? For all they know, a bunch of people and monsters are duking it out in their backyard. “Good” and “Evil” are just words, I mean, your character has probably murdered more than enough of bandits, pirates and hapless creatures. Would you readily open your gates to a riot?

Only if it guarantees me a better shot at a vital spot.

Chaos always finds a way, who you think Evil learned it from?
If the tengu could release those arrows all over Scarlet’s minions, this whole fiasco would be done already. We could start rebuilding our fair city.
But why would they want to involve themselves with Scarlet? This is our problem not theirs, so they have no reason to do anything except defend their own gates.

…Paranoid birds.
Oh hey, I think I was one of the players who tried to res you! Unless that was someone else who died in the same way… which is very possible.
I wouldn’t be too tough on the little birds. They’re just a little scared with all the FIRE AND DEATH right outside their gate. I’d probably shoot you too if I were a xenophobic bird in their position. I’m sure it wasn’t anything personal.
This is our problem not theirs, so they have no reason to do anything except defend their own gates.
How is a maniac who is trying to destroy the entire world (and has the means to do so) not their problem? They might try to convince themselves they are not part of this worth by acting like north koreans, but they are a part of this world.

May Primordus burn their Dominion to the ground. When the time comes and they beg for the help of the races as Destroyer hordes wreak havoc in their dwellings, let no foreign aid reach inside their accursed walls.
Scarlet’s Alliance Wars(a.k.a. “Guild Wars 2”)
A fantasy of sci-fi cyborg implants grafted into the desiccated flesh of Guild Wars’ corpse.
Given Scarlet’s penchant for enlisting races to her cause, perhaps she worked a deal with the Tengu. She’ll spare their side of the wall if they shoot arrows into our bodies whenever we approach.

Scarlet really hasn’t done anything towards the Tengu so they have no quarrel with her. Now when it becomes clear her actions will threatened even them, they will involve themselves in the conflict. Also from their perspective the problem was our own making, thus we should clean it up. The Sylvari’s pale tree created Scarlet, the various other races taught her in the disciplines she employs now. The Tengu, to our knowledge, have had no interaction with her other than her previous attempt to arrange an alliance with them.
It could also be simply a game mechanic to prevent players asking why the Tengu haven’t send at least a few fighters to help with the evacuations or even stop Scarlet.

They warned people before that they were willing to put arrows through people for getting too close to the gate. With all this chaos going on, are we really surprised that they’re doing just what they always said they would do?
I’d hoped for more, but at least they’re sticking to their word.

Might I also add that the tengu, waiting until stuff gets real bad and ignoring the issue until it involves them directly is EXACTLY what the US did in WW2? ;P
We waited till we were attacked, THEN it became our problem; up until then, we let a homicidal manic rampage in Europe. Sounds very similar to the Tengu and the rest of Tyria vs. Scarlet to me.

Seems more similar to Switzerland- in an effort to be neutral at all costs they become as dangerous as the enemy. If you choose not to decide, you still have made a choice.

Perhaps, but the Tengu don’t have awesome watches/time pieces or the world’s best chocolate!
He was not a dredge, flame legion, aetherblade, clockwork monster or krait. So yea, hey could have easily known.
He said he was a thief using stealth skills. Now, if you caught someone prowling on your back yard decked in all black and obviously trying to hide (and possibly looking for something to steal), how willing would you be to ask what they want first and turn them into pincushions later?

Not very willing if I had to take a guess.

Aetherblades are human and Inquest (asura), flame legion are charr, toxic alliance includes nightmare court (sylvari), and while there are no Sons of Svanir involved with Scarlet yet, she has recruited just about everyone else in the past, thus not a stretch to consider that possibility.
So, someone comes running up, in a city being destroyed by Scarlet. No matter the race, the possibility is there. So, don’t be too surprised

My wife says the Tengu are -obviously- from Florida.
You know, dont mind them firing arrows and killing me
What I do mind, is they killed ME and a friend, and completely ignored the scarlets minions chasing us. What, they DON’T kill scarlet’s minions? come on!

They are isolationists and as such do not have a good understanding of other races and the events around the world. One moment they are establishing trade in a major city nearby and suddenly everyone is being killed. Their reaction is what I would have expected. Not to forget internally they have a major problem with Primordius and his minions encroaching onto their territory.
Yes I would have liked to have seen a diehard group of elite Tengu braves holding the gate with ease, but for them to withdraw was logical even though slightly disappointing.
I do do not see them getting involved with world events any time soon. The lack of writing and love their race has had with the living story shows that Tengu and a new player race is very far from Arena Net’s mind.
“I am Evon Gnashblade and this message is acceptable to me.”
They understand how important that wall is, and not just for themselves. It must be defended against every threat, no matter how innocent.
From what we know, Primordus’ minions are bubbling up right under the Dominion of Winds. Letting them poke holes in a few foolish heroes today might save thousands more when things become worse on the other side of the wall.
It’s probably this mentality that makes them react the way they do. They know regardless of what they do there will be those who want to hunt them into extinction just for their feathers, as well as those who would make jokes alluding to such.

Who says they haven’t?… for all we know they’re just hitting everything that comes near the gate, whatever side they’re on
It’s a pile of Elonian protection magic, mixed with a little monk training,
wrapped up in some crazy ritualist hoo-ha from Cantha.
A real grab bag of ‘you can’t hurt me. They’re called Guardians.

I’ve read somewhere (might of been this thread might of been another discussing about the Tengu) a player observed them pin cushioning a pair of Dredge that got near the gate, also there appears to be a wrecked driller near their wall.

I am pretty sure tengu are not immune to the miasma… hence why they are behind the wall. I don’t even know how they’re spotting their artillery-arrows, might just be by sound and practice with ballistic arcs.
A side-effect of that is that you don’t really have any clue who’s on the other side of the wall, just that they’re making noise and, statistically speaking, probably not friendly.
My theorie would be: Whatever Scarlet is doing between this and next patch will affect the Tengu, they realize, that Scarlet is an enemy and help the other races. After that, they become part of the playable races and help defeating the next enemies.
But I would prefer, that we begin a war against them after Scarlet is dead/LA is dead and bring dead to those birds.

They’ve chosen their enemies.

I’ve seen this. I was running around LA looking for those heirlooms for the achievement. I wandered near the wall, but not too close because I knew what would happen, and I saw a few dredge run up to the wall and then get destroyed by hundreds of arrows. It was pretty cool.

If they were, what are they doing shooting down all the dredge that get too close to the wall? They probably kill more of them because most players don’t try twice
Also, unless I missed something they don’t have a spotter on the wall or anything. They seem to be firing blind from behind it so they probably can’t see who you are… and are likely assuming that legitimate refugees have already left (there are few if any in that area).
