Dear Kiel voters: We tried to warn you
I’d take a CoE precursor over more GW1 retcons any day of the week.
I’d take a CoE precursor over more GW1 retcons any day of the week.
It wouldn’t be a retcon, we’re not in the past. The intro video even made that clear.
The way everyone describes the “Omg Scarlet meddles with the past”-fractal-hype is analogue to this:
- We are watching Saving Private Ryan.
- I turn the TV off right at the start, before the transports land.
- I just changed history, Omaha Beach never happened. Oddly btw, modern time is entirely unchanged in spite of this.
That’s how everyone seems to understand Fractals. And it is mind-boggling, because it was never presented as this!

I said retcon, I never said the story would be us actually changing past events.
A retcon would be where the devs changed what happened and then claimed from a lore perspective it was always like that. Please look up retcon and then travel to Arah for some easy to find in game examples.
Honestly there’s a very simple reason I voted Kiel, and it has nothing to do with who I liked more:
The amount of crazy “Omg omg omg Abaddon, GW1 iz liek best garme ev0r, vote Evon nubbs, kitten Kiel”-posts on the forums kitten ed me off.GW1 wasn’t the rose-tinted version you now remember. Abaddon was a weak lore element. In fact, humans are – as always – a rather boring race in this MMO, and it’s predecessor suffered from being locked into them.
I didn’t dislike Evon.
I dislike you, the slobbering GW1 fanboi!

Kiel would have won regardless of which fractal is assign to whom or who provided which discount. Kiel won because she is human. Just look at the % of people who rolled humans and charrs.
Personally i voted against Evon because Evon is a businessman and (more of) a politician.
I voted for Evon for being businessman and being politician…
Slick and evil gets the job done… unlike Kiel who took credit for all the work the player did.
slick and evil works because of stupid people.
I would like to point out that Evon isn’t “evil.” He’s like Yomm.
Evon supporters should be down on their knees thanking Kiel supporters. Would you have preferred Scarlet show up in the Abaddon fractal instead?
This. We took one for the team.
Sylvarri came to life long long after the fall of Abaddon. It wouldn’t make sense unless she has a DeLorien.
Hell, even if it was Abaddon we got, you know Scarlet would have been involved somehow. As for the content (haven’t done the reactor yet), even if we got Abaddon, it still wouldn’t have given us more info.
So go back to your crying corner Evon supporters.
Sylvari came to life long long after the fall of Abaddon. It wouldn’t make sense unless she has a DeLorien.
For all we know, she might…
Please give us a keyring…
Sylvarri came to life long long after the fall of Abaddon. It wouldn’t make sense unless she has a DeLorien.
She wouldn’t have to travel to the past to be there, she could just go into the same fractal we’re visiting. If Dessa can take us there, Scarlet can probably do it better, because she’s Scarlet. She could go there and completely derail what the GW1 lore lovers want to see. Just to mess with us. Because that’s fun.
Sylvarri came to life long long after the fall of Abaddon. It wouldn’t make sense unless she has a DeLorien.
When was last time logic stopped writers in a Scarlet storyline chapter?
Remember, remember, 15th of November
The people saying Scarlet would be in the Abaddon fractal are just pulling outlandish justification for the complete disappointment that is the reactor.
Just admit it. You made the wrong choice.

Being a slobbering GW1 fanboy is the sole reason I hate Charr so much and voted for Kiel. Stop clutching on to your stereotypes.
In my opinion, humans are – as always – a rather boring race in this MMO
Fixed it for you.

Hah. I would probably laugh my face off. And then never pay attention to a shred of lore in this game again.

That’s fine, you can have that stance all you want, but those “slobbering GW1 fanboys” are part of the reason there’s even a GW2.
Because, you know, that’s how sequels work.

Nope. When do people finally understand normal logic doesn’t apply in video games? Especially when you are dealing with a villain that defies all laws of physics and reason.
She could have just travelled back through time and killed abaddon. That would have been ridiculous, but it’s a very real possibility.
I’m very happy Kiel won, it was for the best.

Don’t give them Ideas. :o
Epic battle between Gods vs tiny people interacting with switches?
Epic battle between Gods vs tiny people interacting with switches?
How can you forget such a thing?
Tiny people interacting with switches and SCARLET!.. Which makes the whole story 100 times worse.
Epic battle between Gods vs tiny people interacting with switches?
After Halloween I could totally see how they could have done it too. Have the gods all fighting each other as monstrously huge figures, like the Thorns were, around the edge of whatever it is we’re doing. Because of course we wouldn’t actually be involved in that fight. We’re just scuttling around trying to get through it, dealing with the minions of both sides of the fight. Every so often shake the whole map, possibly even applying knockdown that could be dodged, because giant people fighting would be that violent. Then, just at the end we see Abaddon fall. Quick, clear and short, Fractal worthy.

I’d take a CoE precursor over more GW1 retcons any day of the week.
I’d take gw1 lore over any lore gw2 related any day. While gw1 lore and story telling aren’t premium, its way better than anything in gw2 at this time.
GW2 feels like a saturday morning cartoon, maybe a bit like Scooby Doo.
Windows 10
Darksun it doesn’t matter even if the writing team can see it. If you go read the interview section with the head writer and see the kinda powers she was given over GW2’s story. Combined with her intense love of the Sylvari it doesn’t matter how bad it gets or what a majority of the fanbase thinks or even what it does the long standing lore of so many other writers involved with this series.
She will just do whatever she wants and at risk of just getting this post deleted. I’d compare that mentality more to that of a fanfiction writer then a professional of their craft.
I don’t know exactly who created Scarlet, but I do get the distinct feeling that you describe. I think that’s why people even brought up Villain Sue. it just fits. it feel like a fanfic that is fulfilling a personal fantasy. Its obnoxious.
If her story ends with us defeating her & as she’s dying she spouting exposition about how she did everything she wanted & how it all worked out in her favor & she’s laughing, that’ll be the confirmation, It was a personal wish-fulfillment character. If the writers care even a little about the players, they’ll have Grenth drag her into the Realm of Torment forever or have us go back in time & erase her existence.

Hence why I said GW1 retcon. The Guild Wars 1 lore is out there all neatly tied up in the Prophecies/Factions/Nightfall package. All attempts to revisit that law in GW2 and even Eye of the North have just made it worse and dragged it down to GW2s level.
Now I have come to terms with GW2 lore not being that great as long as it just carries on being its own thing instead of keep going back to ruin already established lore.
So Kiel supporters…
How does it feel to have supported the Scarlet fractal?

You have no proof that scarlet would be absent from fractals if evon won.

It has been established that Scarlet being a part of the Reactor fractal makes perfect sense lore wise and her involvement could have been predicted from various blog posts from the past.
Tying her into the Abbadon fractal would be impossible without committing some seriously crimes against storytelling, since the entire Sylvari race didn’t exist at the time.
I can’t make definitive statements regarding what is now a hypothetical entity, but a little bit of inductive reasoning is all you need to realize that the chance of Scarlet appearing in the Abbadon fractal would be slim to none.
But don’t let that keep you from the denial. As an Evon supporter, it’s pure entertainment.

You do realize the current person in charge of GW 1 lore right now is Angel McCoy? You know, the same writer that created Scarlet and made a whole bunch of these GW 1 retcon?

You should really read her “input” and tweaking of GW 1 lore. Its not a happy ride.

Frankly GW1 had better storytelling and writing than GW2. No Angel McCoy.

“Oh my, something terrible happend. There is an interference in this fractal, but… its comming from the outside! Oh no, watch out someone else is in there!”
We can go into a Fractal, whats going to stop our omnipotent villain sue from piggybacking into this particular fractal for her own utterly obscure reasons?
You now spend 15min chasing after Scarlet untill she teleports away with her all-time favorite catchphrase “my work here done”.
There, took me 2min to put Scarlet into the Abadon fractal.

Why aren’t people reading my posts before quoting me.?
Oh you Evon voters are so silly.
You should be on your hands and knees thanking us that the story team worked on the Thaumanova fractal first. With the current sad state of the work going on with story and lore at the moment it is almost assuredly guaranteed that the Abbadon fractal would have disappointed everyone.
Now when they do work on it, the Abbadon fractal has every chance of succeeding.
You’re welcome.
So people who voted for Kiel based on the Fractals offered got exactly what they expected and voted for.
What’s the problem with that?
The fact that we all have to now suffer the permanent loss of the Abaddon Fractal.
Go read the lore on it. Yay, you now know what happens in the Abaddon Fractal. It’s old news, already written in stone. The Fractal won’t change that.
Sorry but I’d rather experience new stories and new lore, instead of reliving old lore that we already know what happened.
we know what happened because its written in lore you say? im sure what the lore says about it is EXACTLY what happened ( Abaddon was incensed and went to war with the others, and he was eventually struck down at the Mouth of Torment, in a blow that turned the Crystal Sea into a desert.)
well.. at least its meatier than “inquest make boom” id have rather seen and played a part in an ancient mythological war and see exactly how it turned out – all the wiki says is that – abaddon waged a war, and failed….. we know that from the title “fall of abaddon” so we know that part – what about the foot soldiers, followers of the gods, the epic battle and the finale that caused a break in the fabric of reality?
Kiel Replacement Movement
Hindsight is 20/20.
Abaddon vs other gods = no Scarlet
Thaumanova Reactor + Inquest = Scarlet
You did this to yourselves. Even though I actually like Scarlet, I like lore better. And an Abaddon lore based Fractal would have been epic.
Having finally played the story mode (only had parties doing normal FotM so far), I’m very happy with this, actually.
I mean, Scarlet’s involvement is 0 surprise as her previous story explicitly told us she was involved with the Inquest around the time of these experiments, and fiddling with dragon energy siphoning fits her drive to experiment on modifications to races and artificial life.
And otoh, the final part is awesome. It not only gave the FotM very needed context, it made Dessa a highly interesting character. Could be the cliffhanger for the next “major” LS part.

Keep telling yourself that. Keep deluding yourself that Abaddon wouldve been perfect and you were completely right to stick to Evon.
Go ahead and tell yourself that it wouldve been impossible to push Scarlet into that fractal’s story, ignoring that it would actually be incredibly easy. If that makes you feel better, go on.
Most of us know better. Abaddon’s wouldve been just as buggy, with just as many reused assets, with similar frustrating mechanics (trial and error), it wouldve been a disapointing exposition of lore (seriously, what do you expect from a 15min fractal?) and Scarlet would’ve been a part of it.
So Kiel supporters…

Pretty good actually because I can get past the fact that scarlet is there, it’s a good fractal, fun and neat. Maybe it’s just an adult thing to be able to get past 1 bad thing to see the rest, and to me, it’s good.

Yesterday in the story group, one of the randoms whined how lame that fractal was, and just as we got back to Dessa’s lab he left the group and the instance.
I saw the rest of the story, went from “Well, that could have been better” to “Awesome story piece! :o”, and then realized why I think many actually hate it in the first place, they think it’s over when you port back. And I know many never pay attention to sound or chat, as some in the party didn’t realize Kiel and Dessa were talking when we entered, either.
So I think even if they stick around, they’ll miss important elements like Dessa’s tone when she says “I don’t… I can’t…”.
So practically the highlight of the new Living Story content is [spoilers] Dessa not being able to leave the Fractals.
Because the Thaumanova Reactor was not even a bit interesting → nothing happened there. We didn’t even get to know WHY the reactor blew up or what this whole event was even about.
So yea. What we learned about Dessa is more interesting than the Thaumanova Reactor. Good job Arena-Net.
So yea. What we learned about Dessa is more interesting than the Thaumanova Reactor. Good job Arena-Net.
And this is a negative thing? I find that rather positive. It’s a much more inherently interesting story. Mind you, I’d have loved a 2 hours dungeon with tons and tons of readable research logs and memos, explaining every little detail of the Reactor incident.
Sure!
I bet plenty players would hate that. :P

Hell no.
But compare these two things for a moment.
Thaumanova: a freaking hard Story Mode Fractal with a duration about 30 mins (I guess) → story content = 0%
Dessa: not even a minute of spoken content. → more interesting than 30 min worth of content.
Something is wrong – isn’kitten
Accusing Kiel supporters for something they did not know, were not aware of, had no power to make it happen or prevent from happening (other than not voting, but that ties to the previous points. Feel free to ignore the previous points to continue your diatribe) and was sprung as a surprise that many are as much against as Evon supporters are.

When I did the story, only one other player and myself where still in the instance when the Kiel/Dessa dialogue was over and the final story reward popped up.
People who played a lot of fractals are used to things being over once they’re teleported back to the observatory. Some leave immediately, after a “gg” or “bb”. The end of the story is placed awkwardly, and easy to miss. I’m pretty sure a lot of the people complaining that they still need to do the story after doing it once or twice didn’t get credit for it because they missed the end.
Tying her into the Abbadon fractal would be impossible without committing some seriously crimes against storytelling, since the entire Sylvari race didn’t exist at the time.
Then it makes perfect sense, seeing as “a crime against storytelling” describes most of Scarlet arc already.

Well true. Although the dialogue wasn’t bad in the reactor. Though did you find it difficult? I thought it was woefully undertuned (haven’t done it as part of the normal FotM yet), but in a way that is fair enough for the story mode I guess.
I voted for Kiel
I’m glad Scarlet has destroyed the potential epicness of Thaumanova.
Better to ruin Thaumanova than Abaddon imo.
Evon voters would’ve gotten:
Scarlet has gone back in time to make Abaddon crazy on crack! Stopppp HER!!!!
I’m usually typing on my phone
