This guide has one purpose: To teach people how to damage a world boss. This is nothing new, but there are some Tequatl specific stuff I noticed at the bottom:

Damaging Tequatl Guide

The best skills for this fight are ones that fit some of these criteria:

  • Skills that pulse in a field (He can’t move, so he has to take the full damage)
  • Skills that can hit multiple parts of him (He has multiple places you can hit him, if you can hit more than one, your skill becomes twice as powerful).
    • AoE
    • Piercing
  • Skills the rely on power damage
  • Skills that deal more damage when the target is suffering from a condition (He always has all conditions on him)

Engineer

  • Freeze Grenade
  • Grenade Barrage

Grenades are the way to go for engineer. What else is new?

Elementalist

  • Meteor Shower
  • Fiery Rush (Fiery Greatsword)
  • Flame Wave (Fiery Greatsword)
  • Ice Bow

All of these can and should be brought on an ele. Don’t target Tequatl and use Fiery Rush through him to deal crazy amounts of damage to him. When the elite is on recharge, hit him with ice bow and then switch to staff. This is the best damage against a world boss in the game.

Necromancer

  • Life Transfer
  • Well of Corruption
  • Well of Suffering
  • Deathly Claws (Lich Form)

Very possible to bring all of these. Good placement could have the wells tick double.

Guardian

  • Whirling Wrath (Careful with this one)
  • Symbol of Wrath
  • Smite

Smite is the safest and best way to deal damage.

Warrior

  • Hundred Blades
  • Whirlwind Attack
  • Arcing Arrow
  • Hammer Shock
  • Rifle Skills with Crack Shot trait (This makes all rifle skills pierce. Kill shot gogo!)
  • Whirling Axe
  • Tremor

Rifle with piercing and a longbow seem like the way to go here.

Mesmer

  • Mind Wrack
  • Phantasmal Berserker
  • Chaos Storm
  • Illusionary Duelist

Make sure you have Signet of Illusions if you are going for Tequatl. That shockwave hits like a truck! The faster you can put out Illusionary Duelists, the better, so all recharge traits help.

Ranger

  • Barrage (Careful!)
  • Longbow and Shortbow with Piercing Arrows trait
  • Split Blade
  • Any Drake Pet

Drake + longbow + shortbow and stick to the side of him so the piercing works.

Thief

  • Cluster Bomb
  • Trick Shot
  • Pistols With Bouncing Trait

Spam it!

Charr

  • Artillery Barrage
  • Fire Rocket Barrage

In case you don’t have a good AoE on your class coughmesmerscough. I assume we’ll be seeing a lot of the ever so common…charr mesmer.

To me, these are the damage kings:

  1. Elementalist
  2. Warrior
  3. Ranger
  4. Thief
  5. Engineer
  6. Necromancer
  7. Guardian
  8. Mesmer

Doing Melee Damage

Despite what people say about melee, you can definitely melee this guy. You need to pick your moments, but there’s a few that I noticed:

  • When Tequatl pulls his hands back to summon the fingers, he’s not going to shockwave for a bit. Totally open.
  • When Tequatl is fearing everyone, pop stability and wreck his dirty kitten .
  • Just after Tequatl finishes shockwave, he doesn’t attack as much.

If you pay attention to when he goes for the slam on shockwave, you can EASILY dodge or jump it. I suggest dodging as it’s much more consistent.

The best place to do melee damage to him was his front left foot I found. There’s a little island that it is on and you can even clearly see the red circles there.

Tarnished Coast got him to 10% today. LETS KILL THIS TACO TONIGHT!

Another tip: Be brave!

This guy isn’t going to go down if 80 people are defending turrets and 6 are actually attacking Tequatl. It’s pretty clear this guy has a metric crap ton of health, so we need as much damage on this guys as possible!

Note:- A little addition to the mesmer part, they’r prolly in the top tier of the dps, and no chaos storm and mind wrack aren’t sustained dps options if u need optimal dps on teq from ranged so can avoid shockwave is with a sceptor/pistol keeping 3x duelists (maintaining 3x duelists is probably the highest damage or close to warrior in pve)

Stood next to him, put my wells as described, fired on him with everything I had. Not a single hit, even the wells just ticked with “MISS”. I went to defending and repairing the turrets as I concluded I am completely unable to damage him directly.

Wow, is there a chance potions will actually be useful?!?

Another thought, contributing the damage indirectly – if tons and tons of people go down, equip rez skills, like War banner elite, etc. to get them back up and contributing again.

Thanks for posting this. I have a tendency to ignore the summoned weapons with my Ele so it’s nice to know I need to adjust so I’m not slacking on the dps in a timed fight.

Just a matter of everyone getting on the same page and guides like this thread helps with that goal.

The only useful stats when attacking tequatl are power toughness and vitality. He is immune to critical hits (So no crit damage or precision) and conditions get overridden constantly (So no condition duration or condition damage).

I was just told that after he is hit with the laser, he can bit crit. Does that mean that it would be better to wear zerker gear for the fight or is the amount of time open for crits just not worth it?

Assuming I will on him the whole fight(other than phase2)

That’s not true. He is never crittable. If he was critable, they’d make the whole event critable.

I want to propose my own build/tactic for Rangers. It will give you constant high damage by evading most of the dragon attacks.
Main point is that you must stand out of waves and fear range. So we need Longbow with 1500 range (taken in traits). In this distance the only thing you need to worry is poison areas, but they can be easily evaded as you are standing not in the crowd and you will have only a few of them during fight.
Another thing is that in this safe place you can have spirits stand near you most of the time.
Also I found not much profit from pets attacks, as they die to fast. So I just use Jungle Stalker to give me Might in combination with Bountiful Hunter trait.
So here is my build based on Longbow and Spirits:
http://gw2skills.net/editor/?fMAQFATjEVR2VVmVg2Bili90HOD+zIPjShKA

Some explanations:
Steady Focus – most of the time you don’t need to evade anything, so you will have +10% damage with this trait
Eagle Eye – for 1500 longbow range
Primal Reflexes – there is no other useful traits in Adept for this branch, but this one at least will sometime affect Steady Focus
Quick Draw – used for faster cooldown of Rapid Fire (longbow skill 2)
Vigorous Spirits – higher chance for profit from spirits
Strength of Spirit – increases Power characteristic, as it is most usefull one for this encounter
Hunter’s Tactics – constant +10% damage as we always stands from the side of dragon
Bountiful Hunter – most usefull trait for last 5 points we have. By using pet with Might boun and using Healing Spring all the time, we will have +5% damage most of the time.
Quickening Zephyr – to increase damage from Long Range Shot, which is you main skill
Frost Spirit – 70% change to get +10% damage with a hit
Sun Spirit – 70% change to make dragon burn with a hit (the only condition that doesn’t get overriden all the time)
Spirit of Nature – there is no very usefull elite skills for ranger himself, but with this one you can help other player when lot of them was downed by some attack

During fight you must use mostly skill 1. Skill 2 and all the utilities must be used as often as possible. Keep an eye on a poison areas that can appear under you and bouns that you should try to have all the time. Mostly that’s all. Hope this will be helpfull for someone)

Little note for the ele section at the top, take glyph of storms and be sure to cast it from either water or air attunements, works the same as ice bow #4 or meteor shower if you do for a really nice amount of bonus damage, But if you use it from fire or earth the damage won’t be anywhere near as good.

My usual approach is to drop conjures and start in air, open with glyph of storms then ice bow 4 and 3 then drop it switch to fire and unload with meteor shower etc.

Agreed (with most of this). When Yak’s Bend defeated Teq, I played a support role, stacking on our commander rather than standing away from the crowd, using Frost and Stone spirits and healing spring (instead of relying on burning which has a stack limit) and Blue Moa and Fern Hound on passive for their boons.
