I pretty sure it’s a limitation of the game. Otherwise there is no reason that this type of encounter should end in this manner. For everything that guild wars 2 has achieved, they still haven’t found a way to make events less binary.
It is a little strange. It might make more sense if players were actually winning and he was like “Oh no you don’t! I’m outta here!”, but most times he’s completely killing everyone. When the time runs out, he just destroys the laser and leaves, despite us never once firing it on him.
Alternatively, if what we are striving for is realism, after 15 mins there could be a hard enrage mechanism:
1 – Tequatl does some über-attack that kills all players currently in Sparkfly Fen.
2 – This zone-wide wipe triggers a worldwide debuff on all players: “Tequatl succeeded in taking over Sparkfly Fen and destroyed all life within. Morale on Tyria is low.” (everybody in every zone gets -5% debuff to dmg)
Now that might be motivation enough to defeat him when he rises. :-)

That’s still not realistic, if Tequatl wins the only realistic thing would be for him to rampage through the world (or at least the map). The problem with that is it’s not fun when it fails. Think about Orr and all the contested WPs. I would love more consequences to give a purpose to our actions, but I think most of us are too familiar with how much it sucks to be on a map where every WP is contested and mobs are all over the place.

I could understand the timer being 15 minutes….. IF the fight reset like every 30 minutes when it’s failed (and 3 hours when it’s won).
But it’s taking a lot longer than 30 minutes to start again.
…I thought one of the biggest no-kitten-sherlock realizations EVER that Anet got from watching other MMO’s punishing players arbitrarily, is that you’re not supposed to make them stand around for hours waiting for something to respawn?? We had it bad enough just standing around outposts waiting for a Monk to show up in Gw1 and they fixed that and made a HUGE DEAL out of it.
Then this gets overhauled and unlike the Temples, we have to wait and wait and wait to try again just to learn what progress looks like. Doesn’t jive at all with their original Game Aesthetic. It runs completely counter to it infact. (not the timer… the waiting and waiting and waiting)

Yes, just like the scarlets invasions, and it was very unrealistic too (scarlet attack a zone (she wants to captute it) and 45 min later even if she is not defeated, she just go away), but it was still doable.

I totally agree with you, but ill personally w8 untill they nerf it or someone find a new (or at least better) way to defeat him, because for me now its just waste of time with 0% chanse to beat him + no reward.

Or it might just mean permanent Overflow on all the Sparkfly Fen’s and a zone no one is able to complete.

Better to be a time attack rather than a time gated content. Depending on time you defeat it you get more rewards. Once 15 minutes past “Something” left Tequatl and it becomes the pre-patch version and you get the same reward before patch after you beat it.

Sure, if you feel going in a zerg train to get champ bags is a better use of your time, please go ahead and do that. But Tequatl is there for those that would like a more challenging boss fight than what the current loot pinatas have been offering up until now.

I keep seeing people saying about how they’d AFK autoattack him before, but how would you dodge the poison pools and spawns?
Or were you one of those people that I’d have to rez after every Teq fight because you were doing it wrong?

As for this other jab you gave me, give it time, the new Tequatl has only been out for a little for 24 hours, it’s going to be awhile before people can start beating him consistently.
Timers are the only way to make open-world bosses challenging. Otherwise, they can be zerged down. See: Temple of Grenth.
Would you rather he kill us all permanently? Because that’s what would happen in a realistic loss scenario.

Actually i think his response is very valid. You can have 80 full geared lvl 80’s coordinated and in teamspeak, and have it ruined by a couple of trolls/griefers. It can take hours of time to get such a group on the same shard, all to be ruined by just a couple people…

A timer like this only functions as a gear-check in this type of gameplay.
Why they put a gear-check for a public event that anyone has access too is ridiculous, because its a dungeon/raid mechanic, not something that belongs in a PUBLIC event.
This timer is no joke either, it’s really ridiculous. So if you have a bunch of players who are undergeared or are doing condition damage… let me tell you, it’s not going to be enough to do this dragon.
