Meteor Shower NEEDS a circle
“Youre lips are movin and youre complaining about something thats wingeing.”
You mean a bunch of small circles that appear where each meteor drops right? Cause each meteor has a 5 target aoe cap.
I think it would be kinda difficult to map the individual meteors. I don’t know if there is a preset drop spread but I do know that you can game the meteor shower spread when putting it up on the walls of keeps and towers.
A giant red circle for total area of effect would be nice.
Giving Meteor Shower an AoE circle would be such a huge nerf to Elementalists that I’m not even sure people would bother using them for damage anymore.
I mean, let’s get real here: the spell already has a massive channel time and you’re a stationary target for the duration of the cast time. Meteor Shower also needs to be synced with 4-5 other Elementalists to have any impact due to the AoE cap. Not to mention the huge cooldown and that you can easily bait the spell or simply dodge-roll out of it.
If you’re having problems surviving Meteor Showers, it’s completely on your end.

You’re stationary for the cast time, not the duration of the skill. And trust me, as a well using necro main, some red circles aren’t going to stop people from staying in the AOE.
I agree that it needs some warning though, as do mesmer feedbacks and necro spectral walls.
Actually, something I have always wondered. Do you have to go through the whole channel to get the full shower? Because you can dodge out of the channel and still have meteors drop.
After playing against Maguuma’s eles I have come away with an entirely new respect for that skill. Watching about four of them kill three Sup Rams in several seconds was particularly impressive. I am not about calling for a nerf of that skill, but I sure would like to know if the 3k shots hitting my 3.5k armor is friendly fire or not. Please put a red circle around the radius of that skill.
Anyway hats off on that design which seems to be a decent counter to a hammer train. The damage from a pack of those is insane.
You have no idea how happy this will make Duke.

If you get going on the cast (about 1/4 in), and stop or get stunned, meteors just fall at a less frequent rate for the duration of the skill… The longer you channel the more frequent the meteors will fall.

Ah ok! So its just the drop rate that increases. Makes sense. Thanks!
And yeah, props off to VR. Their play style has convinced me to play a glass staff ele. It’s crazy fun and hilarious to drop people with a meteor shower.

You knew what I meant about being stationary, but whatever.
Also, Necro AoE is completely different from Meteor Shower: wells are instant, act as combo fields, and have effects other than pure damage.
If Meteor Shower was instant cast and could strip boons from enemies while acting as a blinding field, I might agree with you.

Wells are never purposefully blasted, or at least, I’ve never witnessed it. Dark fields arent in high demand. They also are not instant cast, and have longer cooldowns than meteor shower, which isn’t a utility.
@OP: This seems like a bug. ALL aoe should have a circle. ANET, please add to the bug list.

That 1/4 second cast time must be a real downer. For all intents and purposes, it is essentially instant cast.
Dark fields are also highly underrated and I’d love to know what guild/server you’re with that doesn’t think blasting them is worthwhile.
The playstyle only works if you have a meat shield frontline which can protect you or when you outnumber the opposition.
Also, there’s an additional kicker to how those eles you’ve mentioned function.
Venomshare with devourer and basilisk.
In other words, when a meteor hits you, you get basiliked then immob, with immob being reapplied each hit after.
That is why it’s so effective.
You mean a bunch of small circles that appear where each meteor drops right? Cause each meteor has a 5 target aoe cap.
Whatever is easiest to implement and would have the least impact on game performance is my vote. If that is the entire field or the individual drop, doesn’t matter. Just want to know I should dodge something before I eat a ton of damage. Some of those shower hits would easily clip my thief for 5k+.
I agree that it needs some warning though, as do mesmer feedbacks and necro spectral walls.
Agreed given how plentiful area of effect skills are it would be nice to be able to separate friendly circles, lines, etc from the not friendly ones. Currently the only way to know if we should dodge or stop firing is to get hit first then realize that is what is hitting us.
You have no idea how happy this will make Duke.
As a side note while BP is getting rolled this week by a clearly stronger server, Mags is one of the more fun match ups I have had in a while. Lots of roamers, new styles of play, interesting skirmish teams. Sure the zergs are still there but for us small fight guys lots to do. Been a long time since I found so many solid fighters on a server. I got rolled several times by better skilled players this weekend and actually had to make several build improvements to handle Mag crews. We started calling them EleMaguumers due to the heavy elementalist and mesmer mixes. Course yesterday we were introduced to the Guardian/Ele roaming teams that made for some hard fights.
“Youre lips are movin and youre complaining about something thats wingeing.”
The most powerful aoe skill in the game that starts hitting you before its animation shows up definitely needs an aoe ring.
Dark fields are also highly underrated and I’d love to know what guild/server you’re with that doesn’t think blasting them is worthwhile.
What?
Why would you waste any time at all blasting a dark field? It does aoe blind…. so… you cast it in their zerg and give up your ranged blast finishers on your thief to blind their mobile zerg instead of basting a water field or a fire field under your own feet? If we are talking offensive blasting, I would much prefer poison, as it does AOE weakness which lasts longer, is harder to clear, and has a much more noticeable effect.
I am not saying an incidental use of a blast on a dark field isn’t fine, but by no means would anyone “coordinate” a dark field blast to any degree of success… nothing like basting 3-4 times stacking up blind duration only to have it cleared with one auto attack. Not to mention the blind effect doesn’t stop a lot of the dangerous pulse skills, like wells and… meteor shower.
Dang, VR strikes again!
All I got out of this is venomshare OP.
Nothing more fun than a lone Ele stopping an advancing zerg with a well-placed meteor shower in front of the enemy.
Go ahead, cross this, if you dare.
Circles won’t actually do much in some cases. Having also played a wells-speccd necro, I’ve seen too many instances where they are just ignored.
-Runs with a 4-man swat team of 2 elementalists and 2 necros. <grin>
As a zerker ele I agree that circles wouldn’t be terrible. It may suck for your heavies to go down to eating 3-4 strikes, but with 900 toughness I get nearly oneshot by crits from another zerker ele sharknadoing.
The only reason I’d argue there should be circles, is fairly often you get hit by the damage before the animation fully renders. It wouldn’t really be a big nerf to ele’s that I can see, since from my experience using feedback on a mesmer, people will continue to stand in an AoE and take damage anyways. However, people can take massive damage from it before they even see the amination render (image if you couldn’t see a feedback placed on your stack until after a second it was up..the forums would be ablaze!)

I find it funny that apparently your guild/server wastes their blasts on dark fields. The only time I’ve ever had anyone ask for dark fields was when they could be used to bypass righteous indignation.
But to the point, meteor shower generally is hitting you without much warning and it’s entirely possible to dodge and still be inside the AOE. It should have a circle, as all AOEs should. In fact, I wish all red circles actually reflected where the damage where the damage could it you.
(edited by Roe.3679)
This would be a great in-game application for those fancy circles they introduced to PVE…. just saying….
The meteor showers isn’t whats killing you. Its just the 20 backstab thieves that VR runs that is killing the majority of you. The meteor shower is just a cover for them.

You can hear and see the meteor falling. What is the problem with just dodging/ moving?
How about give me an aoe circle that tells me where hammer leaps are going to land if they’re coming toward me? This is what Wildstar is doing, and I’m not sure I like that everything is telegraphed for you.
Both skills are based on positioning. Getting caught in either is death.

Some don’t play with the game sounds on (I don’t myself because they tend to give me headaches to ofast). As for dodging/moving to avoid the damage, the main issue I have with meteor shower is that because of the animation, you can actually take damage before you even SEE the meteor shower. You can see the warrior doing a hammer leap (Unless you’re really really laggy).
It could just be an issue with the fact that when lots of particle effects start happening, the meteor shower animation isn’t tied with the dps. This happens fairly often on my screen with feedback. I throw out the feedback and I get indicators that it’s doing damage before it actually renders on the screen. However, it’s not a crucial problem, since it normally only causes 1 hit delay at most..odds are if it kills you its because you were standing in it for too long.

In group combat, both sides often have MS firing so it is impossible to know if the MS is friendly or not until the first damage is registered. Even if there is only one ele on the field, the damage starts on or just before the first visual or audible effect.
As for a hammer warrior… Earthshaker has a big wind up and is headed right for you. MS can be cast from 1200 and hits are often from the top of a wall, behind a door or in the back line where they animations aren’t seen. If MS was a melee skill, it would not be an issue.

I could give more advice, but my coin purse won’t let me.

There is a section for this class balance discussion now.
Well nerf incoming anyways. Need to abuse tornado in EotM until it get nerfed and then go back play warrior.

No no no, leave Meteor shower just like it is…
Since every Meteor Shower pops 20-30 meteors, having a circle for each meteor would cause a lot of unneeded stress to the servers.
And if you decided to only place one big, red circle for the whole area covered by the spell, well, just better to remove the skill completely as it won’t work against any group with half a decent brain.

If Meteor shower gets an AOE ring, then thiefs backstab and all that other crazy stuff that hits for kittenING 15k+ of an ele’s already low hp, should also have a big red ring around the target and reveal the theif for a longer periode of time before the stab due to latency…
Stop arguing for something that is obviously a bug.
Ring or no ring people will still get hit by it because you don’t cast it on people that aren’t afk but people that are already fighting and preoccupied especially if your glassy staff.
I don’t have a problem with it getting rings.

i would like to have a circle as in a large fight u simply cant tell where the meteorshower is comingfrom, u dont know if its friendly or not and also an aoe that hits that hard out of the blue is not a good idea.
it will still hit everyone but at least people will have a chance to react. i mean i got crit by 6k meteorshower and all i saw was the meleetrain hitting our train and then bom booom boom my life started dropping like crazy. in a massive fight the lag also affects this issue as u dont see the meteorshower hits drop fast enough.
every other aoe has a circle, so this one would make sense.

putting more warnings and red circles sounds like GW2 for Dummies, anyway your superior rams cant dodge it
I am a longtime Elementalist and I admit I am a bit torn on this issue.
1) The staff really does not need any nerfs (of the 20 skills on the staff only about 6-8 are worth using).
2) any AOE that does damage should have red circles (and probably have a very reasonable animation/cast time)
3) when those meteors fall, it is not exactly very subtle… (but someone pointed out that it can be difficult to figure out if they are friendly meteors or the rude ones).
Overall I think it should get red circles, but I think they should fix a couple skills on the staff like aiming gust and lightning surge while they are looking at it.
The problem with going down this path, is that it applies for every AOE in the game, you have to consider that almost every skill IS AOE, should Whirling Wrath or the similar skills have a red circle around it?
The same arguements listed for giving Meteor Shower a red ring, applies to the other AOE attacks in the game where some of them deal more damage than a meteor.
The only exception might be that it can be difficult to tell if it is friendly or not, but this goes out the window in big fights where people complain about not being able to tell if a Meteor shower is friendly or not, as it is really hard to see the animations of enemies in big groups

Thanks for the feedback!
Yay, need more nerfes to ele.
Sucking in pvp – check.
Sucking in wvw – in progress
Sucking in pve – pending, first steps like nerfing crit damage already taken.
No.
Meteor shower is not an AoE. It’s a skill that produces several AoEs within an area.
Meteor as well as each individual meteor created by meteor shower should have its own circle, much like Comet does.
They should also all be blasts. Because they are big things falling with an impact like comet, and the circles would make a bit easier to evade them, so them being blasts would compensate for that.
I seriously doubt that. The servers has to send each meteor individually as they drop in random locations within the area, so the client already knows where each one goes. And it’s the client the one putting the red circles as it’s a visual effect.
Of course, lots of extra circles appearing and disappearing would mean more stress to the client and the local system. But not to the server.
In TPVP:
Im using 30/15/0/15/10 Meteor focus on my ele and still go down fast if my teammate not protect me .Was try before this some oldschool d/d 0/10/0/30/30 Sodier’s heal tank too but not good enough to tank with condition meta.(or im suck at it)
Today i got the Champ Magnus title and switching to play war hambow 0/0/30/20/20 .Tanking like a boss at mid and " YOU SHALL NOT PASS !! " spam when finish someone.
I dont care what is your " red" or “circle” ,just leave meteor alone. It’s fine. out of the point if u dont wanna get hit.
HAHA, ill probably get suspended again for this, but really Allie Murdock? 100’s of legit game breaking builds, skills and yet you come back to ele.
You have yet to comment on the broken skills and traits in game, like conditions, hides, perma eva sins. But first time someone brings something up about the weakest profession in game you jump all over it and send it off to the balance team?
