Just a bit curious to know what all the staff eles out there think of the trait changes?
How will they affect your build? What’re you planning to run in the future?

Edit: I think blasting staff and attunement reduction made baseline are welcome, but overall, the changes are neither good nor bad. I think i’ll spec for more survivability than I used to, though. I’ll try different stuff, until i find a build that i feel comfortable with. I’m happy there will be some new openings in gameplay, but I whished some staff issues were adressed, or at least looked at. Well, it’s just wait and try for now.

I feel like at this point people are just throwing this out there to sound cool or something. Staff getting pretty majorly buffed, and it wasn’t lacking by any means before.

I would argue with that, I can see why people are disappointed. I mean look at mesmers and engis, they got some new fun stuff to try while we’re here arguing if soothing mist will work outside water and how you’ll be able to apply it to someone when the radius is small. All I wanted from this was a wider build diversity, something new to play, but we didn’t really get things like that.

I plan on playing a different class. There is no way in hell I will ever run d/d, If I wanted to play like a mindless attunement changing bot (I talking about fixed rotations). A botting program would be more efficient.
I already have 8 classes level 80. I’m not a true multi classes since I don’t play Necro. Nevertheless, I think I’ll play Engi/Mesmer for the first 1-2 weeks to enjoy the OPness before they get nerfed. Then I’ll come back to Ele, but I’ll be playing maybe D/F. Staff cast time/projectile speed are too slow that it won’t be much viable except for a healbot, which I got bored.
Staff needs buff for cast time/projectile speed to be good for any role that’s not a bunker in PvP. Currently, staff must play bunker/cele because it can’t react much to the enemy. Therefore it is forced to play bunker to heal back. It’s boring, and slow.

0/0/6/6/6 will give me higher protection update. Frost Aura as Staff will be very welcome. Buffs to Ether Renewal which will now give Vigor and Regeneration. EA dodge roll heal unnerfed (big thing there). Elemental Contingency for free when I didn’t have it in my build before? Blasting Staff is now free and clearing up another spot? Extra damage reduction from Earth’s minors and now I can get Evasive Arcana, Water Swap Heal, AND Rock Solid + Ether Renewal combo? This sounds great.
in pvp i’ll be speccing fire/water/arcane. this update is really buffing my build to be honest. pve will mostly be running fire/air/arcane, with zerk weapons and armor and sinister trinkets (not meta, but it’ll be fun)

It’s because you play Bunker staff. I played it for so long I’m actually kind of sick of it. I’m not saying you’re playing it wrong or anything. I just wish that Berserker Staff Ele becomes more viable in PvP. It’s more fun, and more active.
Right now the Bunker staff is like “alright, you can’t kill me, I can’t kill you, let’s run around on the point, slowly draining each other”. It’s also very boring to the audience. Nothing for the shoutcasters to tell either.
I’m usually able to bring people down quickly with my staff build. Cleric amulet with runes of strength and sigils of force and energy. the patch will be bringing even more damage with the 150 power boost in fire, as well as pyromancer’s training and puissance (those are the traits i plan on taking, since i already use spell slinger).
the way i see it, staff ele works best in 2v2 or more situations, where you can stand off the point to support your team and hammer enemies with meteor shower
(speaking of meteor shower, how thrilled is everyone to be getting that skill on a 20s CD?)
that said, i do think it would be really nice for zerk staff to be viable
water/arcane/?, same basic pvp/wvw build we’ve always had.
Naturally I’ll try other stuff but I highly doubt it will be as good.
Master build on master class is going to be even better. Fire or Air + Water & Arcana is pretty obvious. Counting down the days.

I play an offensive staff ele in my team, when I want to play staff. I’d say it’s a lot stronger than people realize in team fights. My team peels for me, so reacting to the enemy isn’t as much of a problem, but I feel like staff has some very potent skills for that anyways.
My staff is shaking with anticipation, I like the changes as my current build will be stronger even if (for comparison) I don’t include in the additional traits we’ll get with full 3rd trait line.
I play a zerker staff ele in PVP and I rather like it. Now am i a meta build? I am certainly not Will i get destroyed by a good D/D ele who is ready for me? Probably but i find it a fun way to play. Heck i don’t even spec into arcana (no i am not a down lava tomb troll build either). My build is just becoming stronger with this patch so i have to say i’m excited. I enjoy the control with the staff and the wide versatility it provides. I find with a staff there is not a set rotation you can use but you really need to know your opponent and what skill will benifit the time it takes you to cast it at that moment.

For group runs I’m thinking along the lines of this:

You would strive to cast ice storms whenever in water for the 20% damage modifier. You begin the fight with lightning storm > swap to water and do ice bow, then probably swap to earth and do eruption and camp fire with lava font from thereon out. I’m not sure if fire attunement would be off cooldown in a normal fight when swapping out of fire again, so if it is then skip the eruption. Will see soon enough.

Obviously final shielding is an option but to be honest the only reason arcana is useful is because of renewing stamina and bountiful power. 66060 can work for solo play as well but in low man settings going 66006 would be the post-patch equivalent of for example 64004 currently.
And obviously for both builds, tempest defense is not always applicable and should just be swapped to whatever else is most relevant in the circumstance. Same with ferocious winds.
P.S. – Still bummed about arcane ferocity being scrapped. RIP

I run fire/arcane with two in air (arcane brilliance/wave/shield (sometimes armor of earth instead of shield) and a conjure, elites don’t matter) currently, so the only thing that really bothers me is elemental surge getting the 20% cooldown on arcane skills, because I like having evasive arcana.
Elemental surge is cool if you face someone that doesn’t have cleanses (not to mention it applies with arcane power), but everyone and their dog has six cleanses that they can afford to use to get rid of that massive stack of a single condition. It’s funny now because you can stack upwards of forty seconds of burn, but that will be quite gone.
Thinking the fire air water staff ele will be the all in dmg build. The stander staff ele build will still be air water ar but it will be able to be more dmg aimed then before. earth water ar can be the super tank build not sure if it will be that good though.

We cannot tell without the Tempest line. If it sucks though, due to Karlmir, then PvE will be all fire/air/arcane.
Zerker staff in pvp is still the most useful build to me. 03033 with lightning rod and tempest defense. Same build will be used in wvw.

You only get the 20% when you are in water and since we dont have lingering elements anymore I won’t use it. The only dmg skill on water staff is #2.

Naw I was wrong you want water for the +20 while you frostbow. I was thinking you could get alot more out of bountiful power but then I remmebered its competing with the arcane trait and you aren’t gonna be getting that ferocity, and that you don’t really stack too many boons in dungeons anyways.
Dmg modifiers are tasty especially in lower lvl dungeons but with many parties, a staff ele is often the only one generating some might/fury, if I do so, I lock myself out of fire for like 4 – 5s if I go to water for ice bow.
