Any possibility of grenade auto attack?
They are already working on adding autoattack to kit and yes, I agree, it gets tiresome hammering that same button like no tomorrow, heh.
Hopefully there will be an option to turn off the auto-attack with grenades. Unlike firing a pistol or rifle, we have to physically aim the ’nades and having them being tossed non-stop just before we get our target within the targeting circle would be detrimental.
An auto-aim would be terrific for the grenade auto-attack. It would take some solid coordination to maintain the aim as you auto-attack and move around without it.
They are trying to fix the bug that auto attack vanishes when you unequip Kits.
However, how should Grenade auto attack work? If you just throw Grenades at the current target’s location it will always miss a moving target. If you would make skill #1 hit faster you would need to nerf it to compensate. So, what’s your suggestion?
The grenade auto-attack would have to work like pistol and rifle auto-attack: a direct path from the Engineer to his/her target. Otherwise, we’ll be tossing grenades all over the place and be even less effective than manually throwing each one.
Unfortunately this is the nature of grenades in any game. They take considerable skill to use. I don’t think an auto-attack is imperative so long as the damage output compensates for this fact. If Anet makes the auto-attack a direct hit, the damage would have to be significantly reduced to make up for it.

Well they have an option to turn off other weapon autoattacks so I don’t see why they wouldn’t do the same.
You guys do know about fast casting? It’s in your options, and you can set it up so you just attack and it gets aimed wherever your mouse cursor is, it takes away the step where you have to aim the green aoe marker. Makes casting MUCH faster, less steps, more intuitive IMO. If you don’t like it just keep it off and turn off your autoattack, pretty easy.
I think that if they gave us just the auto attack on our # 1 ability it and leave the other 4 and our toolbet a aimed Ground AoE it will be fine. And as for the #1 being auto attack just have the grenades follow the person, thats what happens with all other projectile based weapons in the game and no one is complaining about the trejectory of Pistol or rifle bullets when people are on the move. The code and Idea is there it just needs to be implemented.
No, I do not think Grenade #1 will ever be auto-attack. You can’t turn it on at all right now, so even when they fix remembering auto-attack on our kits, it won’t matter. They have to change skill #1 to be player targeted, not ground targeted, and I don’t think they want to do that.

Id rather keep it ground target anyway, if they gave engi another DPS option I think there would be a lot less complaints, and people who like the ability as is wont lose the utility.
Its already been said that they are looking into making #1 Attack for grenade kit a auto attack / player targeted ability…. so its not a matter of if they will but how they will do it and how it will affect the kit over all.
I don’t think I’d use an auto-attack for grenades. Lobbing them is half the fun, not to mention you can take greater control in hitting multiple targets without use of an auto.
The grenade underwater flys straight at your target. Having the first grenade spell do this on land would be nice.

With water its better due to faster cast time, not necessarily the way its targetted.
I don’t think it’s a case of grenades having more damage in exchange for clunky targeting, otherwise they wouldn’t have allowed the option to fast cast ground target. With fast cast ground targeting I can cast just as fast as if I had an autoattack, the only difference is that I’m tearing apart the tendons in my thumb and hand doing it.
If they add auto attack on #1 and don’t nerf the damage, a close range grenadier seems real interesting to me as an alternative to a bomber engi.

Why close range? With the right traits I am throwing my grenades at a distance of 1500 and I am throwing 3 at a time. It’s very OP lol, I can hit 500 with each grenade thats a constant 800-1500 damage every second or split second it seems; depending on how far away the target is and how fast you can click at the moment. :P

Why close range? Because i can see them outshining bomb kit more than it already does with #1 being auto attack.
The only thing letting the grenade kit down other than manual aim is the fact that they have flight time, and at close range flight time is near nonexistant.
Actually, an auto attack would work like necro staff: It’s just going to attack at where your enemy is at the time of attack, no homing. Necro staff shoots a slow projectile that yes can be sidestepped, but you can also optionally manually aim the projectile by deselecting target (and pressing 1 for each attack every time).
In this way no changes to damage or balance would be required.
EDIT: so basically, using grenades without having targetted something would work as current, using grenades with manual target would fire towards where the enemy was standing at the point of attack, movement not taking into consideration.

System doesn’t work that way. They can’t change a skill based on just auto-attack.
Please do not nerf this ability. I like it the way it is. I can do a lot of damage to multiplate targets. I also use one of the settings in options that lets me save a second on targeting.

Buffing grenades will not fix the inherent issue of needing to spam, AND only make it harder to balance the fixes required to make no no longer require button spamming.
Fortunately I had training for this, heroic strike for WoW warriors back in the day. Tempted to say just make it work like underwater grenades, but that might be overkill.
Then how about just make #1 skill like underwater counterparts?
As for how it would work, that’s easy: as late as BWE 2 or 3 (I forget now) the fast-casting AOE option would cast your AOE centered on the current target, instead of at the mouse cursor like it does now. It’s already coded, they just have to assign it to grenades 1.
The question is whether that would be a good design or not. IMO it would, since grenades are used as a primary attack.

Grenade kit should work on land the same way it does in water.
I love grenades as an engi, only kit I actually feel good using. I wouldn’t mind an auto attack but it would be kinda funny, I use an extra button on my mouse to use my skills so I am fine doing what I am.

I do use the current fast cast aoe thing and love it. But would not like it if it was changed like this unless there was a UI indicator like a semi translucent circle on the screen or something and still I would like the option to have it like it is now.

That would be insane. The grenade kit, as much as I love it, is almost to simple. I wouldn’t be surprised to see the underwater kit nerfed, It is the best thing I have seen for underwater combat, I remember going to frostgorge sound and killing lv 70-80 stuff underwater as a lv 50 without being touched.
