Are we still Rare?
At lower levels I see a decent amount of engis running around, but the number thins out as you go higher. At level 80 I see few engis.
It is arguably the most unforgiving class in the game, IMHO, and that is a turn off for many players. They actually did statistics of this… let me find… Ah ha! From August 2013:
We represent about 10% of the players. Tied with Mesmers for least popular. Of note, is that GW2s distribution is remarkably flat. Other MMOs have had clear “winning” classes.
Yea, but given the current popularity of decap engi in PvP, I bet those stats are changed.

Probably still the rarest since engies aren’t all stars in any game mode except maybe spvp a little
I have pretty much the same philosophy as you do, OP. Have no fear, Engineer is still a special snowflake.
Jade Quarry
No with power creep we are now exotic.
Hambows remain ascended though.
I’m starting to see a rise of new players running them. I have one of every profession and the engi is by far my most played.
I don’t think that chart is very accurate. I believe we have allot more guardians now then shown there.
Engi is still pretty rare in wvw. They are more of the fotm in spvp though than even hambow warriors.
I kind of get the thought process as I tend to gravitate naturally towards less-played classes because I like quirky stuff (which engi definitely is, and mesmer etc…) and quirky is often less played for some reason, -but- sometimes that doesn’t work and I end up playing something popular.
So i just tell myself that no matter what I play, it’ll be unique for me if I actually enjoy it – and then repeat that as a mantra. I’m lucky I don’t like pure warriors – I don’t think even a mantra would save me from struggles there.
I’d definitely say we’re a rare bunch. I don’t see many in T1 WvW zerg fights. If I’m there with 40 – 60 guildies, there’s usually only myself and two others I know that main an engineer. PvE often feels the same. At world events, it’s usually just me. Sometimes though, like at the Twisted Marionette event, I did see a lot of engineers. That was about the only time I felt like I was amongst the educated elite. After a year of playing however, I have never come across more than 5 engineers in the same place and doing something crazy, like setup 5 mortars and turrets all over the place. It’s not hard to find 5 heavies or 5 rangers in an area, but 5 engineers is rarer then a precursor
This thread reminds me of the old Anet video they made after the game first released and the forums was crammed of threads crying that ascalonian catacombs dungeon was ridiculously difficult (just goes to show you how this forums draws the biggest cry babies and whiners)……At the time engineer was generally considered the weakest profession. They made the video of 5 devs all on engineers clearing the dungeon (I think without a death)……..I know my comment is a bit off topic, but reading this thread just strongly reminded me of that video so I wanted to mention it.

Probably because you’re not on Fort Aspenwood and a member of NERF. We did stuff like that all the time.

Lots of engis in pvp, a few in wvw.
In terms of engis who understand the class, yes we are still rare.
I dunno, population charts would show classes are pretty evenly spread.
I’m new to Engi but I main Elementalist so I like the extra complexity of pressing buttons. In WvW I don’t see many Engi’s compared to other classes.

I main an engineer and play a few other classes. Most groups and guilds in WvW don’t know what an engineer can do and are even more familiar (if less impressed) with a ranger. That is how rare we tend to be in WvW at least on my server.
Of course, when they learn. . . they often appreciate it.
(P.S. Don’t run away from my fumigation).

They have shown such things before though, which showed that engineers were one of the least played, if not the least played, profession. The particular chart I’m thinking of was released quite a while back though, I’m not sure where it’s sitting at currently (possibly in some old forum thread).
I’d say engineers are more common than they used to be though.
If you want to be unqiue in your build, that shouldn’t be hard though. Make a p/p build with full magi gear, put 14 points in all trait lines, and use A.E.D., toss mine, rocket turret, personal battering ram, and mortar. I guarantee you’ll be the only one.

Toss mine is legit though, use elixir u instead.

Elixir U is a stun breaker though, and it has projectile reflect walls. Stun breakers and projectile reflect walls are very common. He’s looking for unique.
Engi’s being rather common especially with the current Living Story. Rolling an engi is the cool thing to do these days.
You wanna be unique? Start with a unique look. To hell with magitech and aetherblade, aswell as the cheesy spinal blades pack.

Engi is king of solo roaming (i havent had such an easy time on any other proff). I dont see many doing it though :/ most are mesmers, warriors, and teefs.
That being said im not saying its easy to play just easy to roflstomp everyone once you get it down.

:O you know the super hidden 14×5 Magi/gadget build and didnt swear to keep it a secret. Now its going to get nerfed.
Mesmer is the least popular class, closely followed by engineer. Both tend to be more used in pvp than pve though.

It IS, easy to play. Engi’s been known to be hard to handle but any kitten can wield a pistol, a shield, a bomb kit and a tool kit with dire/rabid/settler gear, assuming most of new Engies these days barely look any further than this which is insulting.
It would be the time to stop the whole trend of “Hey I wanted to live dangerously so I dropped my Warrior and went Engi”.

I’ve been playing since launch, and I play all aspects of the game. We’re not common.
I will say that I have only ever once seen another lvl 80 sylvari engineer, but they might have just managed to sneak by me aside from that guy.
if people knew how awesome it was being a Charrmy ranger, there might be more.
See signature! we’re the only ones that the legion system really fits.

Must’ve been Chaba you saw. Shes the only sylvari engineer in existence.

Not entirely true, I’ve seen a few my own included. My Sylvari Engineer was my first level 80, followed by an Asura Ranger, and a Norn Mesmer. Good times were had on all.
Part of it is actually due to the problems inherent in the class and some of the nerfs it’s suffered over the time the game’s been out that were never fixed in PVE so you do have to take those considerations into account. It’s not that it’s a bit more difficult to play with certain things (like using 3 buttons to do an AOE heal for example compared to a guardian’s 1 button spam) but more so that certain traits and skills just aren’t on par when compared to other classes. I speak of course only about PVE.
So after the new feature pack are engineers still gong to be least populated? Till now out of all my dungeon runs per week which is about 60 runs per week i see maybe like 1-2 engi. After reading the update engi seems like it might be more fun.
Why would you bother with any of the new traits compared to what we have now.
Engineers are a just a slight bit more popular than they have been but only in the pvp community due to certain builds making a rise. Whether the engineer is good or not is another story. Otherwise it’s still sporadic outside the pvp scene.
Why would you bother with any of the new traits compared to what we have now.
Why wouldn’t you. You do not have the slightest clue how they will work with the other incoming changes they haven’t mentioned yet.

Yes, we’re rare. Use a Mystic Salvage kit if level 68 or higher.

It’s the only combo that I feel at home with. I’ve tried everything else and never made it past 30.
Yes we are but that’s okay. Other professions haven’t figured us out entirely so it’s nice to pull something out of our sleeves once in a while and get people to say, “wtf was that?! how’d you do that??”
We’re a rare breed…I rarely see any in T1 WvW. There’s one guildie besides me who plays an engineer as a main.
We are misunderstood a lot. Even in my guild there is a sense of trying to figure out our role.
When I add that I can provide great stealth you can almost see the blank stares.
Or when they praise the elementalists (all down) for water but it was a healing turret. . . .
Or when the light field is from the elixir gun and the blasts from all my toys.
And don’t get me started on what confusion gets sown when I respect to a healing engineer.
One thing I personally find people do get about engineers is our ability to add confusion and burning.
We are a great utility class and that is very powerful in WvW. Keeping one engineer up provides a small zerg serious “uh oh” utility. Are we as good as four classes combined? Not really, but how many times have you seen the ele go down and there went the water? How many times is the guardian not near the range and there goes the condition removal? How many times have you seen Mesmer’s portal go down but there is need for a quick stealth so you can stomp or get away or revive?
The versatility of the engineer is what makes them such a good addition to a team and what makes them so hard for other players to wrap their arms around the role.
In PvE and WvW yes. I believe at least 80% of the engineer profession play PvP, which is where you will find one or two every game.
You can find me in PvP | I normally answer PMs
Engis are rampant in sPvP since it’s such an easy yet rewarding class to play if you know how to use grenades but in WvW outside of roaming there is no usefulness. Probably why you see so many low level engis, because they are spvp characters.
