It’s been here since forever. It always happens at the most inopportune of moments and it frustrates the hell out of you when it does.
Overcharged Shot and Blunderbuss seem to love to fail when you are right in front of someone. Sometimes if just fails just cause.
I used to think it was because I didn’t have a target but Blunderbuss is an Conal attack meaning it shouldn’t need a target and Overcharged shot is supposed to remove immob, chill and crippple so using it without a target is pretty much neccessary and the screwed up thing is, YOU CAN!!! But as soon as you get a target in front of you……50% chance to fail and 100% chance to cause frustration.
This is the reason why I might just stick to Pistols…….
This happened to me yesterday when i was fighting a thief in WvW. Overcharged shot failed to pop 3 times in a row cause the thief was right in my face. Annoyed the hell out of me.
If you go with pistols, be careful when u activate #2 of pistols (poison dart volley), u can interrupt that EASY, especially if your used to spamming 1 for grenades -_-
try not to play the game faster than it allows. i.e. don’t spam stuff. a little practice with rifle and you won’t have the timing problems and end up interrupting yourself. Rifle is a kittening beast when you get comfortable with it. Far better for 1v1’s and single target bursting than Pistols could ever hope to be. I LOVE the Rifle. Could the “misses” at close range be a little more forgiving? Sure. But mostly it’s just practice and timing.
This happens if you button mash, or you’re so close to your target your gun barrel points through them. In that case the game treats the target as being behind you. Spacing is extra important when using a rifle, but mastered it is a deadly weapon that will earn nothing but rage from your foes.

So in other words yes this does need a fix. Some of us love our charrzooka you know
In a way, this is done for your benefit. If the skills had gone off in the scenario you described, they would’ve have shot behind your foe and not hit them at all, and then they would’ve gone on full cooldown. With the way it is now, they’ll only get a 3s (I think) cooldown, so you can use them again faster.
It is kind of fiddly though. Main thing is to try and exercise a bit of patience so you know that your spacing is correct before trying to trigger the ability.
In the case that you were snared and trying to use overcharged shot, I guess that’s probably a scenario in which it would be better if the thing just fired, so maybe that skill should get changed. Otherwise, you can just try to detarget before using it to remove a snare, although that will increase execution time.

Dude, all I do is press the button once and then I look down at my bar because I’m wondering what just happened and then you see the bloody thing on the 3sec cooldown and then you can do nothing but headdesk
I have been playing rifle for a bit again, Imo it would really help if blunderbuss with this problem was instant cast. The half a second delay before shooting makes it very awkward to use, considering how close you have to be to get full damage and how fast other classes are, that half a second delay means that by the time you shoot someone has already moved, maybe out of view, and the skill just goes on cd.
This is a real bug, at least with overcharged shot. It can go on full cooldown without any effect at all, and not because it’s interrupted. It doesn’t happen to me often, but I think it is an auto-facing issue with moving targets. Immobilize seems to prevent it from facing your target as well.

WOW well I guess the practice of new bug building and no old bug fixing is going strong still I see. The whole problem with pistols is that they shoot as slow as rifles do, even on thieves.
This was probably put in there because engineers suddenly got too close to doing actual burst damage.

The way I usually use it is to charge it up while I’m getting close. So don’t get up close and then activate it. Use the ability slightly before being in the proper range, so that the half second cast time is used up during the last few steps towards the target.
I think think everyone’s always been confused about the 100 range thing though.
kitten the rifle on engineer, it has the worst weapon skills on any profession of the whole game. Wait till they add skills that are useful, then play with it.

-.- more info of rifle engi the worst? 13 000 + kills here in wvw and i dont feel like being worst. Lacking yes but worst no.
I’m pretty sure i know whats happened, both Overcharged and blunderbuss won’t fire if the target moves behind you, most likely whoever you fought moved inside your character model or behind you.

Then I suppose you have played the game for way too long and/or are a more than average player. I played WvW on a more than casual level (1 hour max a day when I play it and sometimes didn’t play WvW weeks on end) and have harvested 3k kills.
I have also played 6 classes to level 80 and the engineer was by far the class with the most lacking weapons. Rifle is rather sucky, pistols are too, and grenades and bombs seem to be the engineer’s last resort.
