The trait : Bunker Down
To bring your party members to the edge of madness
If you are in a group with low condis but good stacking, it can put out more vulnerability and damage. Also if you are kiting people in PVP/WvW, those mines lying around can hit unexpecting players.
This trait is great for solo farming if you use it with bombs kiting mobs in small circles it increase you damage by like 25%. Its bad mob need cross that proximity radius to activate a mine so its useless in dungs while you stacking for example.
Tekkit’s Workshop
Here’s another discussion on this topic I started while ago (specifically for WvW): https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/professions/engineer/Bunker-Down-in-WvW/first#post4027008
I have experimented with this trait in WvW with a high crit rate (50%+) and high power with a few kits/weapons with the following results:
Flamethrower: Lots of procs as expected, but usually you’re chasing zergs (e.g. moving forward), so usually the mines end up behind you and nowhere near your targets. Not as good as expected.
Tool kit: I tried a TK melee build with bunker down. Same as FT, TK melee is often useful only for chasing people who don’t like you being in melee range, and in those situations they’ll be running away and not get hit by the mines. And of course TK is slow so it doesn’t proc as well as FT.
Rifle: works okay. You don’t want people in melee range (just slightly outside of it), so a melee fighter will chase you, and this is where Bunker Down seems to work better. As a result, I think Elixir Gun with Bunker Down would work great, since melee attackers will always be chasing you around (aside from obvious flaws like Elixir Gun generally has a useless autoattack except for bleed stacking, and if you’re using a condi build then mines won’t hit hard),
Bomb kit probably works very well, I simply haven’t tried it. Pistol probaby works okay as well, since you’ll be chased by melee attackers. But again, you’ll need a power build, and power pistol is kinda underwhelming.
Astaxanthas (Revenant), Hepaticus (Engineer), Eosinophus (Thief)
I guess it may have some use when fighting a thief.
Other than that, no i’ve found no use for it.
If they exploded on impact instead of requiring movement they would be OP.
They don’t so they’re not. Only on large moving targets you’ll see some success with them.
They’re used with flamethrower to check if you are hitting anyone stealthed, and annoy any teammate who has sound on

Annoying your teammates is a huge boost that people are overlooking lol.
Bunker down is great. I use it in both wvw and pve.
After you jump shot a large group, you leave a little pile of death all over the floor for extra damage. And as mentioned it’s great for kiting.
At first I thought it was pretty useless, but I forced myself to use it and grew to love it. It’s especially good when you’re creating bombs on dodge roll and kiting away from your enemy. It builds “hidden damage” on them, basically taking their health away without visibly doing anything offensive, like shooting at them.
