I want to make an engineer but I don’t know what race I want to use. Give me some suggestionse in terms of style and straight up kittenery.

Charr racial skills complement the engineer very well.

I think norn are the only race that don’t make sense for engineer, and my norn is an engineer.

It’s funny cuz the toolbelt skills for norn racials are just eating.

I love my engi charr and the skills compliment well. Though I’ve gone for a more modern engineer look.

Human, no doubt..

Look really good in med armor without the HUGE clipping issues the charr have.

Charr look so freaking stupid in the med armor, it is not funny.

I mean look at the guy posted above me.. Gears as piercing in the charr horns.. lol it looks freaking horrible.

I like my Asura, personally. The inventor/scientist story was a perfect fit, and it makes sense that a small race would rely on gadgets and inventions to turn them into formidable opponents.

As for the worst choices, I think the Sylvari and Norn stories would be awkward to play through as an Engineer. The Norn story begins with you proving yourself in battle (something tells me hiding behind turrets would be frowned upon in such a scenario) and the Sylvari seem much too innocent (especially your character, who is newly awakened) to be focused on creating weapons of destruction.

Norn, followed by Charr. Norn because they are “da best” at everything and Charr because they are “da second best” at everything.

Worst engineer: Sylvari, because they are vegetables and vegetables do not have thumbs and therefore can’t control machinery.

People don’t seem to get what the norns are about. They are not barbarians that only know about the glory of smashing stuff in the face. They are a people that want fame, ANY kind as long as it’s not too disturbing.

Killing mighty foes is not the only thing that bring fame. Creating great statues, being the best blacksmith, drinking the most mead without passing out, seeing every type of snowflakes. Those are not feats that really require guts and honor, yet you can see them all in game. Tinkering an army of lethal turret is just the same.

Asura. Without question. We are the mad inventor race. Case closed.

As far as style goes Asura all the way baby!! My suit, my gun , my golems they all scream superior tech (At least they give the appearance of them)

Yeah i know they are horrible, but we are mostly talking about lore so balance is irrelevant.

At least I am not alone in having a Sylvari engineer!

I’m also Sylvari. Clearly we are not understood as engineers. We naturally have more turrets than any other engineer race. We can Take Root and suddenly the whole battle field is awash in turrets.

Sylvari look great in dull grey industrial plate metal skirts~ (i.e. Dredge armor)

But everytime I go into fractals and get the Old Ascalon one.. I’m like “Wow charr have SO MUCH BETTER dual pistol animations”.

If only the Iron Legion had a foreign exchange program for Sylvari’s~

Charr are engineers lorewise, Asura are alchemist. If you go back into interviews a year ago, Anet stated that the engineer proffession got the elixers from the asura, which makes no sense because they should have just kept elixers as racials….dem mouse are jacking our proffesion….

I don’t think so. The alchemie comes from the engineers not being able to use magic and therefore having to search for a replacement. Asura are a highley magical race, I can’t see them having to rely on alchemy like that. It’s more likely that it comes from the Hylek, who are known for their potions and poisons. It was probably the Asura who refiend it later, or maybe the Charr.

…The engineer profession was born from the technoligical advancements of the Charr, who mainly shun magic(and magical elixers). In several interviews long long ago, Jonathan Sharp points out that the engi spread quickly and was ‘adapted and refined’ by all races, directly afterward mentioning elixers, he makes a reference to a certain asuran elixaholic you can find….

I wish I could find the interview that directly states that the elixer part was influenced by the Asura, but saddly I cannot. Just saying, but their unreliable nature (and birght colors!) pretty much screams Asura.

Awesome screenshot. My Engineer is a Charr as well, and I love it. Asura probably makes the most sense, but Sylvari would probably be very interesting since it’s such a non-canonical combination.

Of the playable races, Charr are a good if obvious choice, Norn look good in medium armour and wear the backpacks well. I suspect Human and Sylvari will look a bit swamped by backpacks and Sylvari’s the least likely choice which you might either see as a bad thing or not. With Asura you could rock the whole mad tinkering scientist image.

I played human engi in the beta and the backpack swamped her. She looked like a student on a gap year who was backpacking her way around Tyria. Didn’t work for me. My skinny humans are both casters.

Charr racial skills are OP especially when on Engineer.

Nah, heritage or CE mixed with CoF is what I run, looks good, Orr and T3 is nice, but they are thief/ranger armor respectively. Other than that, we suffer large amounts of clipping w/tail and helmet due to Anet not making sets account for tail movement and horrendus jobs at stretching the shape to fit on the charr. Example ,if you wear full AC armor it actually clips through your belly XD, and many sets clip with the head, even the goggle starter engi piece and craftable pieces

mine is human although I think asuras make more sense as engineers and look far better

• Charr make most sense in lore.

• Charr have the best racial skill synergy with the Engineer profession.

• Charr look awesome … though you do need to spend a bit of time finding armours that don’t clip.

Every race seems to have medium armour blues though, nothing really looks that good in the grand scheme of armours. The backpacks look pretty silly on everyone.

Asura medium is ok. Their bots are also in line with the concept of an Asuran engineer even if most of the Engineer graphics compliment Charr tech.

Though honestly I wish their were an Asura Golemancer race restricted class.

(Norn Shaman – Charr Shadow Beast – Human Monk – Sylvari Druid…to be fair)

Eleazyair.5716 haha I run with Asuran tier 3 Cultural, mixed with tier 2 (I likes parts of both) I mixed that with the Azure Railgun and the Hyperbeam Alpha and I run the golems for style as I made the gear have the same color scheme. In wvw its fun to see people ask me where I get the grear from. But I like the idea of a tech based engineer. I feel that Char and Aura are really the onle choices for engineer because the others dont really bring a particular flavor. It also helps that Asura have the most amusing animations in game imo from the run to the jumps to the way they use toolkit. XD

Its not pink no, thats just from the light from the area I was in, Lowlands Burns.

Its Celestial and Abyss. Ive had alot of positive comments actually.
