Whats so good about engineers?
engis have some of the best aoe and single target conditions available. we have access to all conditions except for fear and no amount of condition removal can keep up with the constant reapplying of conditions. both ele and engis do have to micro manage, but its way more punishing on an engineer to miss a keystroke than it is on an ele, while its also more forgiving to swap to a kit/weapon set on an engineer than an elementalist due to the no cd on swapping kits. because of this we can make better use of on swap sigils as we can swap kits to proc it, and swap back if that kit is not needed at that time.
Engineers also have the best cc in the game. very few builds will have an engineer w/o at least 2 major cc abilities.
I think what monadproxy forgot to add, engineers can have some of the most fun builds in the game to play while they arnt the best builds to go there is allways a new way to have fun when your playing an engineer

this is true, some other classes have like 2-5 “viable” builds while engis have a crap ton of “viable” builds.
That’s how I feel too. Engi isn’t very straightforward, but almost every ability has a secondary effect. Steep learning curve but good engi play really shows.
Furthermore, it’s a profession, not a class.

Naturally, coming to the engineer sub forum and asking that type of question is going to generate quite a few biased opinions, but some of those opinions hold true.
Yes, engineer is excellent at applying most all conditions (I think fear is the only one we don’t have access to) and a fair few of those conditions are applied through aoe.
Yes, engineers can be comparable to elementalists when it comes to swapping out and micromanaging skills if you choose to use kits.
As for what sets us apart from other classes. It’s already been mentioned, but I’d have to agree with crowd control. If you choose to, Engineer can have plenty of crowd control. Some would say that engineer is the jack of all trades, but I think a fair chunk of our diversity has been destroyed by Anet and their careless nerfing.
The only way to know if you’ll enjoy the class is to play it yourself, rather than have others tell you how “fun” it is.
What sets us apart is that we don’t have silly quotes, we don’t look ridiculous, we’re not from some stale fashion and we don’t mindlessly spin our greatswords for great justice.
Also, it’s much more than just grenades.
We blow stuff up, what’s not to love?

Just listen to the sounds that “Fumigate” and “Acid Bomb” make. If that doesn’t convince you to roll Engi, then it just aint for you.
Engi’s are just fun, funny and frustrating. What’s not to love?
@conflict: Where do you prefer to play?
PvP: Engs are strong
WvW: roaming Engs are strong; larger battles not so
PvE: reasonable solo roamer and dungeon support, but weaker overall, especially in large events.
Overall, Engs are a kitten load of fun if you like an active class – and you need to be active to be viable as an Eng.
Engineers are so dam versatile, which is why I love the class. I love my Guardian more, but that’s a personal playstyle kindof thing (heavy armor tanky healing paladin). The Engineer, minus the heavy armor, can play the same way, and they just have so much amazing stuff with them. I didn’t even notice I was loving it so much I hit 62 in 2-3 days. There’s literally a build for everything, and different variations. Do you want to play a condition damage spec? NP, would you like that tanky, or squishier? Grenades? Bombs? Focused on burning? Take a look at the Flamethrower (which can also play super tanky). Or would you rather go full power? The Rifle has a LOT of traits specifically for wrecking face from afar, also can be played tanky or not. The Engineer is hands down the absolute in versatility, they literally have kitten for EVERYTHING.
The kits are amazing, the synergy of traits works really well together. Unlike Guardians that have 2-3 builds that are “meta”, the builds I’ve seen for Engineer don’t lock you down and make you feel useless without that 1 specific trait. Mesmers are awesome as well, but you said you don’t like that playstyle, which is perfectly fine. Play with Engi builds, go to GW2Hub and look up the profession guides. While they’re SPvP/WvW oriented, you can still use them in PvE and dungeons (if you’re into that stuff).

Especially frustrating. I don’t have that “SMASH THEM” feeling with engineer as I have with my warrior or elementalist. Even guardian does more damage and has bigger impact.
Engineer is by far the most fun class to play… Alongside Ele, and Mesmer IMO. Simply because of the crapton of utility, and variation you get with the class.
Furthermore, it’s a profession, not a class.
No. It is a class, hidden under the tag of profession. Just like classes are professions, hiding under the tag of class. THERE IS NO #&¤/(#& DIFFERENCE.
WvW: roaming Engs are strong; larger battles not so
Why do you say that?
Engineer is a great addition to any zerg. Fumigate is an amazing mass condition removal skill, the same with Healing Turret and Super Elixir. Healing Turret is actually really good given that it’s an almost instantaneous cast and can be dropped and overcharged while on the move, providing a Water field for Blast finishers, more condition removal, and Regeneration.
We also offer projectile walls with Toss Elixir U and an area revive with Toss Elixir R.
I love rolling as support as Engineer in WvW, though I just as often spec into the FT for badge vacuuming.
In PvE, I will admit we are not top tier. I will always go on my Guardian to any dungeon unless the group already has one—to which I then go on my Warrior. Engineer is usually the third pick if all other bases are covered.
It’s actually the reverse, Engi has alot of protections which are imbued to like 150% when used within his large group of allies, a rifle engineer in there guarantees you free hits, and its magnets can potentially lead to an ennemy’s death every 20s.
Lotsa Fun.
Lotsa CC.
Lotsa ’splosions.
Lotsa fire.
Lotsa builds.
Lotsa versatility.
Lotsa underestimation.
Lotsa aoe.
Lotsa…uh, lotsa strength in PvE, WvW, & PvP
Lotsa conditions.
Lotsa direct damage.
Lotsa lists.

Think you got it wrong man, engineers might not have that “impact” in a fight but we are deffently a force to be reckognized. The way I see it we are the dirty fighters, we fire of static shots that blinds everyone and cause confusion, we deploy useless inventions that fire of pallets to annoy people and before the realize it that useless turret was a heavypacked bomb that just blew up in their face and knocked them down.
By just being a engineer you have the advantage in every fight because your enemies never know what to expect unless you run HGH nade build.
Just a tip, what ever build you go with bring atleast two knockdowns and perma vigor/swiftness it will take you a long way.

You need to be good.
Everything else is facerolling compared to a 3-4-kit engi.
(edited by Kontrolle.3514)
AOE grenades, that’s really about it. Everything else can be done by other professions far better. Unless of course we get to count how nerfed we are and how many bugs we have compared to other professions. Then were are A-number-freaking-one!. Or maybe the number of useless skills in our set or entire trait lines that a portion of intention is 97.6% useless cough turrets cough.
Dont take me wrong. I love my engineer and hes my main. But I have an 80 war, 80 guard and 73 ranger and a couple 20s etc. They stomped the engineer in every way other than aoe grenades. Which in my opinion is entirely mitigated by the fact you have to manually aim EVERY SINGLE attack with grenades and they are basically useless in small groups in WvW and entirely useless in pvp.
Out of every profession I have played this one is by orders of magnitude the most neglected and busted in the game.
