I like Runes of the Forge and Runes of Hoelbrak personally… It just sux the only 25% movement increase we’re offered as Guards is through runes. I’d gladly sacrifice a utility slot for 25% movement signet.
Well I personally use them because I put them in tier 3 cultural armor and don’t feel like losing out on my gold by salvaging, or wasting gems on a splitter lol. I love the vitality boost offered by the speed rune, but the problem is I invested too much into travelers to turn away now.
As a solo guard roamer running a medi build, the extra vitality is greatly appreciated. So I would choose speed over travelers for the health alone. Just my 2 cents.

If you are roaming or doing any form of fighting where you don’t have a staff, traveler runes are totally worth it.
I use speed runes for golem driving, where the extra vita is useful… But i don’t find them particularly useful for actual combat. if i was to have swiftness in a roaming build I’d use traveler purely for the crit damage and boon duration
Crit damage, and the duration bonuses are both better than you’re giving them credit for. Either is fine, but Travelers offers a lot more utility which translates into team benefits. Speed is more selfish.

True speed is more selfish, but I don’t think people should be running either in any type of group setting anyways, since you should have some type of easy swiftness in the party anyways. as far as crit damage it is 6%, now personally I don’t put as much value in crit damage as I used to, but even then 6% just doesn’t seem like enough to worry about. As far as boon duration goes, I don’t think many builds that run traveler’s are boon heavy, but I could be wrong in that.

I run travelers in my WvW set with 10/0/0/30/30. Very boon heavy.

Bah you and your healway knockoffs! :P Though with that style of build I guess I can see it edging out speed. I just cant get over running almost 20k health in my roaming damage build to see how travelers can be better.
Also, off topic: how did I not know you were on TC? Next time Sor/TC/BG face off you I and Akamon should duke it out in OS. :p

Ehhh. 20k, 15k – all that matters is that you can resist a Thief or Mesmer burst IMO. 15k can, so that’s about what I run typically.
And yes, that would be fun – I would probably lose though, I haven’t PvPed heavily in over three months. School and all that. :[

Applied Fortitude —> Traveler’s lol. XDD
I use speed in PvP though, since there are no traveler’s and they work well also. they’re definitely a cheaper alternative as well. but i feel overall, if you can afford to traveler’s does give better rounded stats and you definitely don’t lose all that much in terms of survivability. i definitely don’t spec for boon duration so i just kind of see the boon duration as a bonus. ://
and i’m down to meet up in OS. : )) 1v1v1?

I use runes of speed in www. They are fine if you don’t feel like forking over the money for traveler’s.

I use travellers on my roaming build simply because they are better all round stats than any other set and the 25% movement boost allows me to use greatsword hammer instead of limiting myself to staff which I only use when running with zerg or guild.
stacking vitality is ok but having 80+ critdamage is much better when I already have 18k hp to sirvive heavy bursts.
it is a metter of preference, I did save for a while to get them but its money well spent imo.

I’ve been playing with various runes for a meditation build the last couple of days. The thing I found with speed runes, when compared to traveler runes (just for the guardian itself), is that the commitment in vitality makes it so that your offensive capability is hardcapped due to lack of any power or crit damage bonuses from the runes. When you try to make up for the difference in gear, what happens is that, since power primary only goes with 3 combinations. You will have trouble getting a setup where power and toughness are both at respectable levels.
From a team perspective, I feel that speed runes limits the variety of builds you can push out with optimized stats (where the 15% boon duration really becomes a more interesting factor) for the same reason as above.
That being said, the difference isn’t all that large. The min/max definitely produces notable differences, but is it worth the price difference of the runes? That’s much harder to say. Additionally, speed rune’s primary advantage is that swiftness, which, by preference, may be more important than anything else travelers can offer.
