WvW and PvE are really separate and you won’t find something that works well at both.

With these builds, you’ll just have to change the traits, not respec. You will have to carry two sets of gear.

Very Generic WvW starter:
http://intothemists.com/calc/?build=V7;4NF-20M3FGF90;9;6TT9;434A18A5;0U-k6-wl6CqNYCqNYQGlW0-R7-cYq8vV0X5Y8ZG4La9g0Q-6k09cV19c;9;9;9;9;9;54-6b

Starter PvE Setup:
http://intothemists.com/calc/?build=V7;4NFV20M3JG-90;9;6TT9;435A1675;05;04-NV0CqNYCqNYNBlg0-R7-VZ39wV1X6Y9ZH4Ma6Z-870HV8aNX8a;9;9;9;9;9;4V8-6s

Eventually switch all your gear out for Beserkers/Scholar runes. I would recommend looking at Obal’s guide for 48 fractals.

Always shelter for heal and renewed focus for your elite.

here is what i use for everyday dungeons/fractals and it seems to work fine
change runes to monk/ranger if you dont need much condi cleaning
change some knights/cavaliers for berseker if you can time dodges/blinds/block perfectly
keep dodging for elusive power
depending on encounters, pick also hammer, scepter, wall of reflection and potions of slaying

Should I use GS or Hammer in WvW?

Either great sword or hammer is fine in the wvw. Great sword is good for getting into the thick of things with an alright leap gap closer and for condi cleanse with symbol + Whirling Wrath. Hammer is good for control and blasting might as well as other things. So whatever works for the group you run with and whatever you feel comfortable with.

Hammer has a lot more crowd control?

Hammer has a ring of warding that blocks enemies and can be used to trap an enemy with you or prevent opponents from advancing through a choke point as well as an immobilize on skill 3. The chain looking thingee. Sword has a tether and pull which is good for interrupts. So its not a LOT of CC. Guardians don’t have really good CC in general. But that is a whole other thing.

GS is a better option, imo, because of a leap (which is highly undervalued; it’s a perfect GTFO skill or a perfect lead to bombs, not to mention the handy blind), a high damage 2 skill, pulsing retal/damage on 4 that also triggers Altruistic Healing, and a 5 skill to stop people from escaping bombs. It’s a very powerful weapon, in general, and usually a better choice over hammer.

HOWEVER, if you’re running with a less organized group (read: pubbie train), I would advocate hammer over GS because of the blast finisher and greater CC options. You have to be more self-reliant when you’re not running with an organized guild group because you can’t count on the randoms with you to know what they’re doing.

Also, in that build that was linked, swap the staff to Cleric’s and switch into it before popping Tome of Courage. Celestial accs are also far better than soldier’s, but they’re costly and difficult for new players to acquire. Very strong starting point for guardian WvW builds, though.

A lot of the stuff I linked, I took into account someone just starting out and without a lot cash/materials to get everything.

When it comes down to it; I carry a TON of equipment with me.

I have my full PVE Zerker set with Force/Night equipment
Knight/Berserker set for anchoring
WvW Soldier/Cleric Set

I think you might have overlooked something. I know a few people new to the game gearing up guardians that simply don’t have the badges/karma for a full set of PVT gear. I’m not sure how long it takes to get a full set from dungeons but for most people new to the game PVT gear isn’t an immediate option.

Anyone have an idea on how many dungeon runs are needed for a full set of PVT gear?

ps – why do so many thieves/guardians have guardians/thieves for alts?

PVE Meta builds:

Classic meta Sword/Focus + GS DPS guard fractal/dungeon meta. It still brings all the utility you’d expect from a guard but with a nice punch.

other variant of this build(just moves 5 kill points into radiance):

Classic Hammer build for high level fractals. Good for pugging, or if your group needs perma protection. My groups runs two guards in fractals and one of us runs this build.(Generally the other guard )

WvW:

GS = Mobility, the leap can help you escape from nasty fights especially with two handed mastery or get into them, if that’s your thing. The main thing is GS 3 and the autoattack. Don’t expect Whirling Wrath to carry you in difficult fights.

Hammer = When you need the extra survival. The best part about the hammer is the blast from Mighty Blow and the ring of warding thing. I usually use hammer when I need to break through heavy enemy fire.

If you can’t afford a soldier set, you can always settle for like yellow knight stuff with soldier crests or something. Dirt cheap and it’ll hold out until you get the actual goods and you’ll be salvaging it all eventually anyways.

For once you have tasted flight you will walk the earth with your eyes turned skywards,
for there you have been and there you will long to return.

As the meta’s have pretty much been listed already, and you did mention that you are new to guardian, I’m going to link you to my build, The Traveling Guardian it doesn’t have the top DPS, but it does offer a good starting point, with a reasonable amount of DPS and also a nice amount of support/survivability. It easily allows for players to get used to using berserker gear and getting used to the class before moving on to the more demanding builds, or to continue using the build if they wished.

Just a side note, if you can’t afford the traveler runes, they can easily be replaced by scholar, boon duration, or personal preference.

I would say sword/focus and hammer are top builds for pve,
generally sword focus is better in my opinion as the permanent protection isn’t needed a lot of the time and s/f offers brilliant dps along with lots of utility, but there are some dungeons where hammer is better because of protection on bosses/mobs ect (fractals, CoE (debatable), AC) so it’t really up to you. Anchor guardian is still meta because it is bad, popular and easy. I like 15,15,0,20,20 for hammer and 10,30,0,5,25 for S/f (0,30,0,30,10 – lower dps higher support/regen might stacking/dodgeroll healing/sustain/support variant). Full zerker is optimal but a few knights pieces can be used on the hammer build if you are just getting new to it and get downed too much and valk can be used for s/f if you feel you need the extra sustain, but guard got so much defensive utility anything but zerk to me now seems kind of silly, but yeah it’s up to you, also shield of the avenger is kick kitten

Because thieves/guards are awesome!

As for the gear; you can say that about most. Unfortunately the build tool assume exotics. I would start out with masterwork/rare and upgrade when available. The PVT would be the most forgiving for someone starting out. I did forget that you can’t craft the PVT jewels cheaply (requires Azurite); so you would have to fall back to Karma.

A good alternative would be Cleric jewels (Power/Vitality/Healing).
