Hail, all!

Now that the Beta Weekend Event has come and gone we’ve been firing away at various notes we’ve gleaned from your discussions about the Guardian Elite Specialization, the Dragonhunter. After distilling a lot of your comments we’ve settled on several changes for the next iteration of the specialization that should help address your damage, survival and versatility concerns while retaining the core of the new playstyle.

These changes should be available to you in the next Beta event.

A large chunk of comments we read centered on the new virtues being good, but not quite good enough to be left without the virtue passives. As we want to see you using them in the appropriate situations we tweaked each of these so that while the choice remains a trade-off, there can be more cases where the actives are used.

  • F1 Spear of Justice: Increased range from 900 to 1,200. Increased impact damage by 20%.
  • F2 Wings of Resolve: Increased heal value by up to 50%.

The longbow skills were generally well received, but Symbol of Energy felt on the weak side compared to the rest of the weapon skills.

  • Symbol of Energy: Increased burning duration from 4 seconds to 5 seconds and Vigor duration from 1 second to 3 seconds.

Traps were another area of concern that we’re addressing with the following modifications:

  • Purification: Increased bonus healing based upon level by 50%.
  • Test of Faith: Increased the damage multiplier on this ability by 20%.
  • Fragments of Faith: Decreased the duration that fragments remained on the ground from 15 seconds to 10 seconds. Increased the duration of the aegis granted from fragments from 5 seconds to 8 seconds.
  • Procession of Blades: Increased the base damage by 36%.
  • Dragon’s Maw: Increased the maw trapping duration from 4 seconds to 6 seconds. Damage increased by 20%.

Lastly the elite specialization traits needed a little more love to really drive the defining components of the Dragonhunter.

  • Piercing Light: Added a 20% recharge reduction to Traps.
  • Soaring Devastation: Increased the duration of the immobilize from 1.5s to 3s.
  • Hunter’s Determination: Increased the duration of stability gained from 4s to 6s.
  • Dulled Senses: Added that when you apply cripple you also apply 3 stacks of vulnerability for 5 seconds.
  • Heavy Light: Increased the internal cooldown from 7 seconds to 10 seconds. Increased the knockback distance from 120 to 240.

Can we please have some background on why the GM that grants protection to nearby allies on virtues cast was not touched? The duration alone makes that trait not GM worthy considering we have shouts and weapon skills that apply an equal amount of protection. >.<

The traits remain uninteresting to me in design. More damage won’t fix that but meh.

Virtue changes are nice, they needed more impact as they arent instant 600 range effects anymore. I hope Shield of Courage works properly this time as well as Spear of Justice with traits like Wrath of Justice.

Longbow: Still needed that auto attack speed increase…
Also Deflecting Shot and Symbol of Energy still can’t be fired behind us?
Hunter’s Ward was bugging out and not doing any damage over the duration was this fixed? Still needs more damage on duration and less on end if its interuppted imo.

Traps: no opinions

Traits:
“Piercing Light: Added a 20% recharge reduction to Traps. "
Still keeping the bleeding on traps. Oh well, good addition atleast.

“Soaring Devastation: Increased the duration of the immobilize from 1.5s to 3s.”
Semi-random buff. I thought the immob duration was fine from last beta.

“Hunter’s Determination: Increased the duration of stability gained from 4s to 6s.”
No real opinion, I thought it was fine.

“Dulled Senses: Added that when you apply cripple you also apply 3 stacks of vulnerability for 5 seconds.”
Makes the trait better but doesn’t address overall issue with requiring Heavy Light

“Heavy Light: Increased the internal cooldown from 7 seconds to 10 seconds. Increased the knockback distance from 120 to 240.”
Fair changes.

Still no longbow cdr trait.

LB#1 projectile speed was the #1 complaint; Idk how that got overlooked. Please give this the ranger LB#1 treatment and increase the projectile speed. DPS = 0 if the attack misses a strafing target. I do not recall reading about anyone complaining about LB#4.

The complaint is that they are not thematically appropriate for something called a “Dragon Hunter” that fights with a Longbow. Everything about the longbow encourages ranged combat. It’s counter intuitive to have a spell that is essentially melee/PBAoE.

Scenario: Tequatl – Attacking from ranged as Longbow Dragon Hunter would have to run into melee range of the Dragon’s foot in order to use a trap.
How is this thematically congruent? Traps need at the very least to be deployable from range, like consecrations, in order for this to work with the weapon type and theme you have given it.

Lastly the elite specialization traits needed a little more love to really drive the defining components of the Dragonhunter.

You went the wrong direction on Heavy Light. With a 10s cooldown it is in no way shape or form a contender with Big Game Hunter. BGH is miles above either of the Grandmasters.

Furthermore, you have two traits that entirely depend on each other which basically makes one useless without the other. Dulled Senses is entirely depended on Heavy Light’s knockback, which is now even less reliable with an increased cooldown. Heavy Light would be a ridiculous trait choice unless you had Dulled Senses. This reliance on another trait is in direct contrast with the trait rework performed in the Specialization release and is a huge step backward in that regard. I encourage you to merge them and be more creative with a replacement Grandmaster trait.

Soaring Devastation: Not sure if this needed a buff to immobilization. Maybe a damage increase instead of the immob increase.

Heavy Light: Not sure if this needed a nerf, was never really powerful, just annoying.

Symbol of Energy: I like this change, awesome. Helps dps guardian who don’t use Honor(most don’t).

Traps overall: Excellent changes but again, you’re losing too much sustain taking these instead of meds/shouts (pvp).

Piercing Light: Excellent change. I was hoping you’d change it something other than bleeding on hit since Procession of Blades is the only multi-hitting trap that would hit this consistently.

I believe the worst of Dragonhunter is the bow itself. Slow and klunky as hell…slowmo projectiles…Rooting skills…

Thb these changed are okay, but still not good. One big problem is for example that F3 isnt a instacast anymore, so we cant savestomp anyone. For me reason enough to not play dragonhunter in pvp. Also symbol of energy is very good, the skill which needs a change is deflecting shot, its nearly to useless. Make it something like a ground-target port with high cooldown and everything is allright.

Thank you for the change notes.

However, a couple of lingering concerns that don’t seem to be addressed:

1) The auto-attack is too easily strafed by a single target. What is the reasoning behind not improving its flight speed?

2) The changes to F1 and F2 are okay, but it feels like Shield of Courage could still really use some instant cast love. The projectile block is great and all, but it would be more useful to be able to actually use it reactively when you are stuck in one of the longer dragonhunter skill animations (picket fence) rather than have to wait to queue it up or cancel the cast.

3) As mentioned above, the GM protection on virtue seems really out of place both thematically and in terms of play style, not to mention its out classed by other skills the guardian already has.

4) Some trait interactions are a bit wonky with the new virtues (as one example, Justice is Blind. It waits till after the cast animation of the spear and centered on your character.) Given that the range on the F1 spear has been bumped up to be longbow range, would it be possible to look into making traits like these more functional (ie. maybe blind around target when hit?)

Scepter is worse. Both miss pretty much unless you’re RIGHT in front of someone.

These changes are pointless and do not address any of the core issues raised numerous times!

Traps are still garbage.
Traits are still garbage.
Virtues still have a cast time.
Deflecting Shot and Auto Attack are still garbage.
Virtue trait line is useless with Dragon Hunter.

Honestly what is happening at ArenaNet? Do they hate Guardians that much that they would deliberately insult us with these “changes”?

Also there are a few ideas i would line to see on guard in the future since i play guardian since gw2 beta some of these seem real strong, but im not asking to make everything happen, just considering them

1st how about a DH grandmaster trait which males smite conditions knock people down for 2 senconds?

2nd what about an f4 whichs passive is something weak (maybe 10% increased movement speed?) and its active is a ground targeted port!

3rd id love to see radiance shine a little bit, so what do you think about an radiance/dh grandmaster trait which stuns people on blind?

4th making it able to move while casting true shot on LB

5th i would love to see a minor/adept virtues trait like the mesmers shatter trait which refreshes the virtues when the guard is below 50% health

They sound pretty strong and i would love anet considering some of these for the future of guardian since guard is becoming a more selfish class with the dragonhunter

Thank you. I think for it to work, the shield would literally need to be right in front of the Guardian and not have a space between him and the shield. I think it needs to happen due to the massive CD it’s on.

edit: Not to mention Revenant’s have a Darkfield applied to theirs for lifestealing and ours does…what?

Alright, we’re making progress.

Although I’m pleased with the buffs to our new Virtues, I’m not sure they are in the right place- I’m still worried about DH synergy with the Virtues, both Radiance and Virtues lines.

F1 blind/immobilize traits from Radiance need to properly synergize with the Spear of Justice.

F2 interactions with interrupts: This skill is easily as telegraphed as an Earthshaker, on a much longer cooldown, and goes on full cooldown if interrupted with none of the benefits you traited for. Having what once was one of your biggest cleanses interrupted by, say, a perplexity necro, causes you to not only not cleanse the conditions already on you, but have even more conditions than before, is a huge problem. I’d think that at the least, if it gets interrupted, negate the attack but activate Absolute Resolution. It’s clunky to use- I understand if it gets interrupted, the movement is already done etc, but condition cleanse from AR should be absolutely front-loaded. I’m on the fence about the heal though, since the heal’s been buffed it probably makes sense to negate the heal if interrupted, or heal at the area where the wings get interrupted.

F3: Should be instant cast, period. Being unable to pop stability/aegis mid-stomp is a ridiculous issue. Should also block all attacks, if Revenant can have a similar shield on a lower cast time.

Longbow: You forgot the most important thing about Symbol of Energy, as a lot of the other posters have stated, make it interact like Combustive Shot/Arcing Arrow. Longbow already lacks kiting potential compared to scepter/focus and this issue makes it absolutely crippling.

I don’t think these changes for the Dragonhunter are enough.
The Longbow still feels super clunky to use and doesn’t feel rewarding enough.
Also trait wise, too little to give it more umph.

I’m missing attack speed and / or damage on the auto attack.
True shot felt unrewarding damage wise considering the charge up.
Ideally a more reliable/impactful deflecting shot.
Nice to see symbol of energy changed, feels more in pace with the lower endurance vigor gives.
Hunter’s ward could use some tweaking as it was super clunky, and I didn’t like using it for that reason.

Overall all the skills just don’t feel rewarding, fluid, nor fun.

Will have to see how the traps work, not sure if I’d like the cooldown to just be baseline or not.

I don’t think the trait changes will put them in the right place yet. I wish there was more focus on things that actually impact your weapon usage, mostly the damage aspect. The vuln helps, but is already so available in game.
More focus on bleed/burn would be cool, or perhaps just pure physical damage.
I also really don’t see why zealout’s aggression is only 7%

I expected in the very least an AA speed increase. My mind is literally blown at this response. I wanna keep what I’m saying constructive but wow is it hard at the moment.

How about we all take a step back and look at this from a new angle…

The clearly missed a lot of what is wrong with DH with these changes and it seems like what has been said here was overlooked. Some things were changed for a much needed buff but the root of DH – LB – is still an issue.

Seeing as how they’re putting out update notes for the next BWE, I imagine we’ll see the next BWE really soon.

When it does hit, the best we can do is to reiterate our concerns collectively through official feedback methods.

Don’t get too discouraged, HoT still doesn’t have a public release date yet.

Umm, a TON of feedback threads I read mentioned the LBow auto attack being to slow and easily avoided by players. There is even a YouTube video linked somewhere above this comment. Please address the DH LBow auto attack speed issue.

I agree with most of what you listed but I need to comment on this.

We can’t take the name “Dragonhunter” too literal. It’s a theme like you said and one that would match that of a big game hunter. Hunters hunting a Stonehead for ex will need to lay traps and lure the enemy into them. Much like The Predator movie. So focus more on the hunter part rather than the dragon part. Plus, we don’t know what HoT will bring.

Also, I found GS to be a great second weapon and this allowed me to get in close and when the moment felt right to lay down more traps before I backed off and swapped to the LB.

I like the new changes but I share the concern with others that we still can’t ground target behind us like other classes can:/

i feel like anet totally misses the point with the changes. Dmg wasnt really an issue of guard. main issue was was it (mostly longbow) feeling clunky,the new virtues being an downgrade to the old ones, traits being boring and Traps being useless. so no, changeing numbers isnt the way to go here imo.

so. pls watch what people tell you in the forum. when BW1 was, nearly every comment contained “fixes” to longbow. It could look like this:

1. increase arrow speed (the whole point of guard getting another range option was that scepter aa sucks. so giving us a weapon with the exact same problem just leaves me speachless)
2. you can now move while casting (maybe reduce the dmg abit in exchange)
3. its not a ground target anymore. instead you target an enemy (this skill is near useless as a ground target skill)
4. make it able to shoot behind you (like arcing arrow)
5. this skill is actually fine

Virtues as i said feel like a downgrade. a fix could be:

F1: seems fine. dmg increase wasnt really needed
F2: 900 range
F3: instant cast

the traits of dragonhunter feel mostly boring and without love or just underwhelming. The propesed changes help a bit but are far from being enough.
my ideas:

“big game hunter” make it cause cripple instead of vulnerability. this would also make the F1 skill much more useful. the chain effect you see would also come to life. enemys once hit cant run away that easily anymore

combine “heavy light” and “dulled senses” into one GM trait. The created space in master tier could be used for a trait like: " traps are groundtarget "

combine “bulwark” and “hunters fortification” into one master trait. this GM is really underwhelming. The space in the GM tier could be used for another trap trait. This way we have the ability to pic one trap, one longbow and one virtue trait in every tier

ideas for it could be: “immob on trap activation” or “increased radius + duration of traps” or maybe something like " Fragments of Faiths if you get stunned"

Im overall not a big fan of traps as a utility. but it seems we are stuck with it. so maybe some love in the traits could make it useful. also it seems like a good idea to go with 3 traits for longbow,3 traits for virtues and 3 traits for traps. People gonna use the Dragonhunter for one of those 3 things. They have to go into the traitline to use them. So why not give them traits in each tier for the thing they want to use aswell?

You obviously did not read any of the feedback given over the beta weekend!

These changes are pointless and do not address any of the core issues raised numerous times!

Traps are still garbage.
Traits are still garbage.
Virtues still have a cast time.
Deflecting Shot and Auto Attack are still garbage.

Honestly what is happening at ArenaNet? Do they hate Guardians that much that they would deliberately insult us with these “changes”?

Everything I am feeling is in this post… and everything below is targeted at the OP.

Are you kidding me? That’s it? You are correct about one thing, “distilling a lot of your comments” because obviously you didn’t listen to any of us.

We cried out for instant cast virtues because putting a cast time on a profession mechanic just seems like pure discrimination (Warrior and Engi are an exception, but only because it would be broken).
We cried out for increased projectile velocity because it’s too easily misguided by strafing or sudden movements ESPECIALLY in PvE.
We cried out for mobility while casting True Shot.
And most importantly, we cried out for a good set of traits! Who gives a kitten about 3s protection upon virtue activation? and about the lousy and lazily tossed around minor traits?
Most of these changes are far from fixing what’s wrong with the DH. We definitely didn’t need the increased heal and immob duration on F2. If you’re so concerned about “using {virtues} in the appropriate situations… so that… the choice remains a trade-off”, then reduce the cooldown and reduce the payout. Players need to be rewarded for skillful play more often than every 50-75 seconds. Right now, Guardian to me feels like nothing but a kitten class with three signets.

F1: Reduce the range back down to 900, increase the tether to 1200.
F2: Reduce the healing and immob duration back down, make the skill remove all movement-impairing conditions.
F3: Change this into a target area effect, like a ranged Shield of Absoprtion. Why should a LB spec have a front-line styled ability?

Make everything instant cast. F2 will function like Thief’s Withdraw; the movement happens immediately. Reduce the cooldowns.

If I could bet my money on anything, it’s that Irenio is just Karl’s alias because I feel like the same quality feedback was given.

Am I the only one who finds that the condition for cripple on Puncture Shot is a problem?

If you are fighting a single creature, it is not crippled by this ability, so anything you do that relies on cripples requires you to be fighting multiple enemies, which means you become weaker specifically versus immobile bosses such as dragons, especially those with barriers such as Jormag. Granted, someone else will probably apply cripple, but that is less certain in dungeons and fractals.

I get the idea of the traps. Traps work as a way to keep minor enemies from wasting you in melee while you plink the boss off in the distance, or allow you to get some distance from them so you can use your range. I do see how this is a problem with a stationary range-oriented boss (again, Jormag).

Since outside of Jormag-like situations, traps are often going to be quite useful, it may not be a good idea to buff traps directly. Instead, perhaps a trait could add a boon to you and/or allies either when you are within the trap’s confines (like a banner), or when it expires without being triggered. This would have the bonus of reinforcing the supportive nature of the guardian, and could lead to interesting strategies like trap stacks being laid out during a fight as banners are now.

Glad to see the changes & good to know you guys are reading the feedback. Also any word on virtues being instant cast. Was the aiming issue of symbol of energy tweaked? Thanks. As others have said below can we please get an adjustment to the projectile speed of the bow?

This. Instant virtues and crap bow attacks were the most addressed issues and yet only minor tweaks on trivial stuff happened.
It’s ok if you ignore people asking for ground targeted traps, but DH virtues are not as good as Guardian’s

I have to ask you all, did anyone else notice that bow #1 would only bounce if the second target was behind the first? I found that really annoying having to change targets all the time in order to hit both. I don’t know if it was a bug I was getting or something else entirely.

I didn’t test Spear of Justice but i’m not surprised. And like Garull stated, it won’t be fixed because if you look at Scepter Auto, it’s been broken for 3 years.

The only thing I learnt from these changes is that they haven’t paid one bit of attention to the actual complaints. As far as I can tell, all that they’ve done is throw out a bunch of random buffs in a poor attempt to appease people. The new virtues aren’t “good”, they’re not even considered to be “okay”. The longbow was not well-received either.

I knew these changes weren’t going to be worthwhile. :>

I agree. Nobody cared about 30% more damage on the sigil or range on the spear of justice. We want speed on virtues and bow.

Normal virtues can be casted even while on the ground or when locked into a long skill, without interrupting it. And F3 has a stronger effect with that AOE aegis (that is the best boon in the entire game)

Some of these changes look interesting, but I thought the two biggest complaints (by a wide margin) were activation times on virtues and projectile speed for the longbow, neither of which has been addressed.
