Guardians before announcement:

“Where is my condi, where is my long range weapon”

Guardians after the announcement:

“Wah, condi, wah ranged weapon”

You guys already have strong positions in pvp, pve, and wvw. Why aren’t you excited about getting specialisation skills that make your class more intricate and unique. Or would you prefer adding another 5 shouts to your utility bar?

Although we haven’t seen any of this in detail yet it seems as though you’re getting exactly what you’ve all been calling for, condi and more viable range.

Be happy. <- smile like this.

Because after 3 years of playing, our class doesn’t change at all. We’ll still be playing the exact same builds as now with the exact same utilities. Sure, maybe lb is useful in pvp, but still with utilities we have already. Besides, “more condi” remains to be seen since traps are NOT a reliable source of dmg.

You know that the people that were cheering for and hoping for it, and the people not happy that they’re getting it aren’t the same people, right?

Hehe, I know. I was only trying to make the point that some people should wait until Friday before they let the crocodile tears flow.

I was dreading the thought of guardian getting the 6 shout spec. In hindsight, I would have preferred it to what we are getting.

I find that incredibly sad.

I.. Um.. Eh… “Hunter”..? I know I wanted a longbow but.. I didn’t imagine this thing that looks like a Ranger specialization… I mean, traps? Really?

I’ll try to keep my negativity away until we actually see more, but now.. This is against everything I imagined so far maybe it will turn out to be cool when I see what the traps actually do (the gloves and longbow skins are a letdown to me tbh)

The problem is that TRAPS aren’t exactly top tier skills. Aside from a small subset of condi rangers who use them in exactly 1 game mode, traps are a far choice for optimal builds.

Remember meditations? They are offensive only, until you trait for sustain with Monk’s Focus.

Lets wait and see, maybe the support theme becomes a give up your support for more damage solo sorta thing.

They won’t work out great. It’s quite simple to beat a trapper build, you just don’t walk in it. We have disappointing skills and a disappointing weapon, no need for the “hey it may not be entirely useless” stuff.

You know, that you can (currently) throw the traps on the target to let them proc instantly?
Another great idea is to just stand ontop of them, so if a melee wants to attack you, he will get hit … wow, who would have thought of that?

Edit: Even just using them for stealth and superspeed through the runes makes low CD traps a great survivalability utility.

Yeah, not to mention wells get used. Wells are the same kitten thing but slower for full effect and WAY more visible. I think people are being silly honestly. If this class was named something else the mood would be much different.

I’m a little….undecided here. Reason being, traps are very underutilized in the game as is. Now granted, you do NOT have to take traps by speccing into this line we’ll have to see how the traits influence choice.

Guardians already have great area denial in the form of symbols. The PROBLEM is that we have no means to keep enemies in them. Traps are not going to be of any use because it’s just more of what we already have, but even easier to avoid.

Thematically it does makes sense. Right now the biggest threat to the world are the dragon’s and their minions, so Guardians focusing on dragon killing to protect the world makes sense. Best way to protect and guard is to deal with the biggest threat out there.

In practice, yeah traps don’t exactly have a good history of being useful. Will mostly come down to specifics. Just because current traps in the game are bad doesn’t mean Guardian traps will be bad. Or that the rest of the spec and trait line are going to be bad.

I’ll wait and see.

Except they aren’t really that much easier to avoid… The benefit of traps in general is that they are bursty. All it takes is one touch for its full effect. Plus you don’t even know what they do… “Wells” on Mesmer could have been anything and terrible. They turned out way better than necromancers in some cases >_>

I hope you’re right. I’m reserving judgement as well it’s just going by past practice sort of influences part of my judgement a bit early. I am hoping that the LB is a power-based weapon and that the trait-line (Like other lines) allow for speccing outside of traps equally.

Still, have to wait until we hear more. Perhaps it can do more than support.

That looked like it was a longbow skill, actually, given the channeling animation. I’d say people have the right to be skeptical about the use of traps considering how under-utilized they currently are on the two classes that feature them already.

You realize many traps deliver their full effect instantaneously? You don’t need to “keep enemies in them.” If their benefits are scaled correctly they’ll be better than symbols.

Some players requested a long bow to guardian Anet gave them.
But really what players were expecting was a bow with lots of conditions and damage for the easy play.

Skrits accept anything that is shiny.

If it had just been bow, I would have been okay with it. Seriously though, traps aren’t that useful. There’s a reason that neither Rangers nor Thieves use their traps very often. Mostly they’re just used for WvW roaming iirc.

indeed, and making a trap for allies doesnt make any sense even if it is for healling gw1 rangers had healling spring trap but they were rangers, that electrfied fence trap would fit something like ele or engie, guardian with wings and spears for gap closers that would be fine, imo ic this as a nail in guardian coffin.

Guardian with bow is to hard to push players to play if doest make a ton of damage.

They’re slightly changing how traps work for rangers, so we don’t know if they’ll be stronger or not. Guardians have pulls, and HoT will come with a taunt mechanic. What Guardian’s traps do is a mystery at this point.

To say that our angelic-leaping support-ish dragonhunter is a clone of a ranger, or that it’ll immediately suck, means nothing at all. We barely know anything.

Anything can happen at this point. It seems like people are criticizing the entire elite spec simply because they can’t handle its creative guardian/ ranger combo.

Its quite possible a lot of people aren’t going to use any of the new stuff; for any of the classes. This game has a sort of desire to reward high skill cap play and traps actually require far more situational awareness than “smash #1 to win”.

With the chronomancer, mesmer is receiving a new buff (alacrity), a new profession mechanic addition (F5 shatter), a shield with more blocks than the guardian shield (the irony continues), and the option for more team-support oriented builds.

By contrast, the dragonhunter is giving the guardian nothing new except for traps, which are already lackluster on the classes that currently have it, and a longbow which looks like it could be nice, but is really dependent on whether or not it will do decent damage. The LEAST they could have done would be to add a 4th virtue to give us something else new for people who aren’t interested in the longbow or traps.
