Critical Impact [Crit]
Power or Precision?
Critical Impact [Crit]
IIRC Spirit Weapons aren’t affected by Power, so Precision I guess would be best.
I’d say for pretty much any offensive character that isn’t going heavy into condition damage, you need a balance of power, precision and +crit damage. Precision is better than power if you are building for self healing.
Why would you say precision is better than power if building for self healing? for the might stack?
Me personally I’m full clerics gear. Power is persistent dmg, and doesnt have to depend on crits.
Short answer: It all depends on your build. You need a balance of both to do decent damage.

If you put points in boon duration, prefer power because you’re basically covered with SYG (unless this is PvP, at which point still prefer power because you’re not going to be able to not have 100% retaliation).
If you invest in Crit Damage, go precision and go honor to dodge forever. If you’re going spirit weapon, you’re pretty much an anti-kite guardian who’s doing Staff Scepter, and Smite is pretty much a crit dependent spike.

Altruistic healing can heal you for 200-500hp per second with a high crit rate when you’re using vigor on crit/might on crit. Throw in superior sigil of blood and lifesteal on crit food and you can get 1000 healing per second from crits. The healing is somewhat dependent on the situation: more targets and more party members = more healing.
For me id rather have power than precision (because power makes retaliation hit harder)… but my guard is a sPVP bunker… depends on your build.

I don’t believe the player’s power stat boosts Retaliation boon. I think it completly dependent on the sources stats.

Critical Impact [Crit]
Power > Precision.
We get decent stacking of power through our weapon abilities and skills.
Guardians more about sustained dmg anyways and power works off your crit but still have a big effect with out crit. While crit is completely dependent on power
Edit: Didnt see the spirit weapon part, dont know if it does/doesnt scale with power or prec. I dont use spirit weapons. But what i said before applys to melee/normal combat with weapons.

The “source” being the player who put the retaliation on, yeah. In other words, you or your ally.
If you’re just looking at raw damage, power is almost always better. It simply scales better (it’s about 1% per 10 points) versus precision, which, at max possible crit damage (103%) is worth about .75% per 10 points.
Math above seems a bit off.
For attacking a given armor 1% more damage from power is found with an additional CurrentPower/100 points. Crit % scales as a factor of crit damage. If a crit does double damage then 1% more crit adds 1% more dmg. Max possible crit damage is well above 105% (32 from trinkets, 16 armor, 10 weapons, 10 runes, 10 food == 78 or 2.28x normal) but you will do 1% more damage putting points into Perception with 2100/(CritDmg + 50) points.
You need a CritDmg of 50 for 21 points of Perception to add another 1% dmg. Until you have over 2100 Power it takes less than 21 points of Power to add 1% dmg. Unless you want the higher Crit % for sigils or other effects you should concentrate on power and add Perception and CritDmg where it doesn’t take away from other stats you are working on.
Can someone do the math and work out the expected values and plot them on a power vs precision vs expected value (3 dimensional) graph?
pleeease
If only it were that simple. Power scales differently between weapons, and also based on rotation.
General rule of thumb:
Power is usually better than precision. UNLESS:
- You take proc-on-crit traits that are important to you.
- You invest significantly into critdam or the Valor line, in which case you want to not have all that critdam locked away behind a low precision.
If you follow that guide, you’ll be either at or close to your optimal damage.

It’s 36 jewelry, 16 armor, 12 runes/orbs, 10 weapons, 30 traits actually. So it’s 104%. 114% if you count food. You can then find how much you get per 1% crit chance by doing .01 × 1.64, then dividing that number by 21. I don’t know what that adds up to off the top of my head but it’s less than 1% per 10 points.
Either way the conclusion is the same. Power > precision for raw damage.
Traits. Duh. And at max CritDmg it’s a touch over 16 points per 1% extra damage so wins at any power level over 1600 (which you are probably going to have to have gotten all that CritDmg).
Thanks for corrections.
I’m partial to Power because it applies more widely to most situations equally. Getting good damage from crits depends on two stats and it’s chance driven, making it less likely for a slower weapon to crit in a given time than a faster one. Bottom line is that it’s easier to get more from it than crits.

I thought “source” refered to the enemy that dealt the damage? That tool tip is very misleading

Power>Precision. But remember, it’s not always a trade-off. You can have both.
It’s never either/or. But since power improves the damage of ALL your direct attacks, including criticals, you’ll get a better return out it.

This for sure. My build relies on me getting crits for self healing, so not only does perc give me more damage but also more survivabilty,
