How about this?

  • Shield of Absorption cooldown goes from 30s to 24s baseline.
  • Shield of Judgement cooldown goes from 25s to 20s baseline.

Added to the release notes maintained in General Discussion.

Edit: For clarification, the shield recharge trait is still there on top of this. It brings the cooldowns from 24>19s, and 20>16s.

Find all the code you have for guardian shield. Mark it all with your mouse. Hit delete.

Step 2:

Make something useful

Reduce the cooldown to 5 seconds and we will still use focus, or no 1 hander at all. It’s not the numbers, it’s the skills. They are terrible.

Shield #5 is completely countered by a team with Stability. If the Knockback effect misses due to blinds, blocks, or stability then #5 is worthless.

Focus Mastery trait offers twice the Protect up time than Shield #4 does… kind of sad really.

Who ever uses the Shield in competitive PvP is, sadly, under performing himself. If they remove the immobile channel effect on Shield #5, then the offhand would have some merit to it as it would finally be on par with other offhand weapons (other focus weapons) in the game. I would even consider using it, given certain situations.

Guardian players have one huge problem, no dev likes to play, so they only know the burst builds using hammer/gs and sword focus…. well because with high damage is easy to kill so they ignore the rest…

There are two problems actually with bunker guard, and might be a trait balance problem only i think this would make them a good point hold choice to pvp also.
I will talk about mace becouse shield is highly dependable from main weapon to.

Mace on guardian could have its healing value halved while on fight, it is a very low mobility game-play wich is a huge burden in this game, and guardians to have a minor working value need to sacrifice alot, compared to other classes.

Same with guardian shield traits:
Merge stallwart defender with strength of the fallen, so players can use strenght in numbers also, imo this would make shield much better and a good option to defenders, and e strenght in numbers could work like similiar to invigorating bullwark, guardian increasing defense of group by spending time on fight(start ( 150 on the inital fight time and then change to 250), that would make the bunker viable as other better classes filling that role with damage only.

A1nd probably increase shield 4 damage plus resistance or block on shield 5 detonations for 1 or 2 seconds?
Funny how this looks completely op on paper but on combat would be more balanced than many tough.

Bunker guard should be a circle point holder/delayer, it is far from that.

  • I use Sword/Shield on 1 Map only, Wich is Battle of Khylo…

  • Dont try to land cc if you see they have stab on, even if there is stability you can use the detonation has a peel( 1.5k ish) or to reflect incoming projectile but must be clutch cause you cant rely on the reflect much..

  • Yes, but your protection aint AOE, it is more of a selfish play..

  • Not really, depending of the map and comp you will face, shield can shine more than focus + It has more clutch plays..
    Dont get me wrong, I do miss the fix they did on the Draw Weap SoA ( When you still had the reflection up)
    Overall you should use it to kittener comps and build.

Anyway heres my POV,
I think shield still need a small buff, im not talking about giving it more blocs.
What i think will be balance and a good n nice fix is :

  • Shield of Judgment : Create a shielding wave in front of you that damages foes, gives Protection and Aegis or Resistance to yourself and up to five allies.
  • Shield of Absorption : Create a dome around you that pushes foes back and absorbs projectiles. Detonate the dome to heal nearby allies and it is a Blast Finisher.

I feel that if Anet make these changes, it will add more synergie to the table.

Honestly, I love shield, and I still prefer it over focus when it comes to bunker in pvp. However, in my view, it needs some slight adjustments. Shield of Judgment should have either Taunt or Resistance added to it, if those are too powerful then add Aegis. As for the Shield of Absorption, maybe have it reflect instead of absorbs projectiles, and also make it a blast finisher. Furthermore, the trait (Stalwart Defender) is fairly underwhelming. It competes directly with SiN. SiN applies to your whole party and you only lose 30 toughness; compared to Stalwart Defender, which you only benefit from. Additionally, SiN doesn’t require a certain weapon to get the bonus. The 20% skill reduction isn’t enough to justify it, they need to significantly increase the amount of toughness you gain from Stalwart Defender.

I’ve genuinely clutched out some projectile defense with sword and shield, though at the time I had a shield using guardian I mainly ran Mace and shield.

Shield probably does need some help, but certainly not what people have been generally offering. Just by having skills use pve versions only and fixing all the main bugs, shield would be a lot more attractive. After that, it only needs a slight bump in functionality and its golden.

I want to add my suggestion to this topic about shields:

- Shield of Judgement is the worst skill comparing to the rest of the professions / class shield skill. I would gladly use this skill if there was a trait for shields that also removes condition and gain a boon or 2 or blinds opponents

- Shield of Absorption is okay since it absorbs projectiles however, it doesn’t heals your health unless you detonate the dome which i don’t like about it. If guardians have to stick to holding position while having this skill active, at lease have it gaining health with some fancy animation and add removal condition trait with shields (animation for this must be complete to remove/absorb conditions).

As for detonation part, I wouldn’t mind if it also counts as a blast/fire finisher with small-mid range. Light finisher needs to go, I would like the idea to blast water fields with a shield otherwise burn players with AoE. Also when detonated, few conditions transferred to enemies.

TL:DR: I’ve been playing bunker spvp builds before and after the recent patch. I still prefer focus than shields because their roles are other way around. Also ranting about fighting against condition builds which I literary can’t do anything but run away.

Otherwise if Anet is still going that dragonhunter can you please add a…


SUPER LARGE, MEAN AND SCARY FACE LOOKING MONSTER shield that is larger than the bastion ascended shields. I’d love the idea of seeing my guardian with mean scary face shield absorbing the projectiles and conditions all stuff monster-shield’s mouth. I don’t have if the polycount is so kitten high for the shield BTW as long it’s something the artist are proud of creating that scary shield.

Bonus if there’s animation for opening and closing mouth with sound and cool ambient lights from its eyes and mouth

that would be great.

It’s easier for developers to have all the info regarding shield in one thread, especially since it’s already been replied to by the devs themselves.

Don’t loose your time.
Developpers already did a great job for shield. But it has been made for the revenant.
The elite specialisation provide tons of support with pretty nice shield skills.
I think you’d better enjoy your cd reduction given on last patch (thx again grouch for this wonderfull solution) because I fear it will take some time before you get anything else.

Probably won’t mean anything at this point but here is my 2 cents. (on top of fixing bugs and PvE/PvP split)

Skill #4: Shield of Judgment

  • Taunt (2 seconds) your target and block next incoming attack. Skill duration: 2 seconds.
  • Triggering or cancelling the block triggers the current cone attack.
  • You can move while blocking

Skill #5: Shield of Absorption

  • No longer knocks back on activation
  • Still roots on cast but follows the Guardian when moving (as seen on Revenant skills)
  • The healing burst on cancel is a Blast finisher

Trait: Stalwart Defender

  • In addition to current functionality, secondary activation of Shield skills causes knock back.

The idea is to make baseline shield more useful in most situations so it is better group support. I wanted to remove the knock back from the initial activation of Shield of Absorption as it limits the situations where you can use it without being detrimental to your group. Also, moving with a field is a new mechanic introduced with the Revenant that I thought would fit well as a trade-off.

I thought about making the knock back on secondary activation baseline for both skills but it felt like too big of a step from the current functionality. So instead I went for the additional blast finisher and thought to buff the trait with the CC since everyone agrees it isn’t that good as it is.

For Shield of Judgement, I based myself on how Chronomancer and Engineer Shield skills are balanced.

I know it may not seem much, but ArenaNet prefers iterative balance changes. We can see that with how they gradually tweak content from the beta events.

I think this could be a step in the right direction?

If you really think this isn’t enough for a first pass, add this as a throwback to GW1:

  • Shield of Absorption grants 1s of Protection to up to 5 allies within the dome whenever it destroys a projectile.

Changes nothing for PvE. The shield bubble knocks back enemies, and knockbacks are despised in pve as it spreads the mobs out.

The bubble would also be better if it reflected projectiles instead of absorbing it.

Alternatively, the skill can be changed so the guardian can use his own actions while the shield is up.

Remove the knockback, add protection upon the bubble’s spawn or maybe even Resistance.

For the other skill, make it grant aegis for those it passes through.

Yes the only good thing about shield is the knockback, if you remove this… I would like to see that arenanet upgrade skill 5. Maybe they make the knockback stronger also the shield last langer, but that your not imobilized and that it would block/reflect projectiles.
