Torch 5....why...
There’s a plethora of skills and items in this game that doesn’t make sense… let’s push aside that argument for the sake of it being a fantasy game.
If the Torch didn’t say Magical Flames then I would also complain about there not being a burn effect. After realizing the weapon itself actually goes through walls, I took the context of “Magical” quite literally – it isn’t a flame base weapon at all, in spite the animation’s SFX. The word Flame is but a mere description of the effect, not what the effect actually is.
Don’t underestimate the power of Torch #5. People complained its damage and functionality prepatch, but Torch #5 actually got a noticeable buff postpatch. Those who are using Supreme Justice + Permeating Wrath in a heavy cleaving and cleansing TPvP environment will know that it does massive AoE burn damage as well as moderate amounts of party cleansing.
The radius (the width of the Magical Flame) of the effect is fair enough as well, I really can’t complain considering it’s not an AoE effect
TL;DR
“Magical” means magic. “Flame” is but a mere description of the effect, not what the effect actually is.

it procs virtue of justice a lot, so theres some burns for ya. i swear by sw/t for zerker guardian and would only swap that set out if it got horribly nerfed. i can get the shole channel off onto people and it wrecks face. my pal will judges in with ring of warding when we are roaming and then we both torch 5 in the ring. few survive.

As was mentioned, it’s magical fire, which means it has no need for your interpretations of logic of science. Likewise, it’s fierce combined with Supreme Justice and Permeating Wrath. Potential of 10 stacks of burning (to 5 people). Even better when paired with “Feel My Wrath”, which isn’t unreasonable to see. Also, cures up to 9 conditions on 3(?) allies. Deals moderate physical damage (loosely compares to sword auto with Quickness). All this on a 12s cooldown.
Because balance. It cleanses condi’s on allies, which is pretty kitten powerful if you use it right. It also does quite a bit of damage on its own. Add to that that it can – moreso if traited into virtues for AoE burning – proc VoJ very fast means it’s a pretty solid skill for AoE bursts.
If it ALSO applied burn on its own, think of the value this skill would have if combined with full burning guardian. Nyea… no.
well lets talk about the fact that it removes condi from allies but not the guardian.
I would be more bitter about the guardian himself does not receive the benefit of the flames (i.e. condi removal)
it means THEY got me for " neg criticism in clever disguise".
Know that it has been fun and I love ya all.
tl;dr
It pulses twice a second up to 9 pulses. Virtue of Justice rapidly procs during this time, giving burning to many targets.
Not tl;dr but still “in short”
I think the skill should be reworked to not just remove conditions on each pulse, but to heal in a small area around the cleansed target for each condition removed. Alternatively, have it apply burning around the target if a condition is removed.

Torch #4 release DPS definitely makes up for the absolute banter of a skill that #5 is. Doubt we’ll see a re-vamp of #5 for quite a while but would be good. As people are saying – some kind of self cleanse would be nice. Honestly I never use cleansing flame for condition removal as in my opinion I think it’s such an awkward method of condition removal and I never really need that much condition cleanse anyway (talking PvE here) (& dat dps loss is too much of course)).
Meanwhile i’ll keep throwing my truck of a zealot’s flame until they make #5 worth using.

Actually, the torch #5 is finally viable now with VoJ related traits. I have no complains more about this skill (and I already complained a lot).
I think they finally fixed the design flaw of the class in the condition aspect.
The design flaws that must be fixed in my opion now are only mace and shield as supportive weapons. These weapons are weak in these roles, I can say that because I tested a lot with both (in a lot diferent setups).
The real problem with torch #5 is the long casting time (4s)
It could be adjusted reducing the casting time from 4s to 3s, and the final hit should apply 4 stacks of burning for 3s…
And so one of the most unused guardian skill can be considered
-Reduce channeling time or increase damage slightly.
-Give it self-condi cleanse (even if it’s just a single cleanse at the beginning/end of the channel).
-Up cooldown to compensate for improved functionality if necessary.
I’d much rather have a skill worth using on a high cooldown instead of a low cooldown skill that I don’t use at all.
Torch 5 is definitely more useful than it’s been previously, but the channel time and lack of benefit to the Guardian still make it pretty situational. The two main uses I’ve found for it:
1) Cleaving downed enemies, especially in a burning build with Supreme Justice and Permeating Wrath. When enemies are downed or busy trying to revive their teammates, the channel is much safer, and the burning you can stack with it is often enough to stop the revive and down the reviver (or at least force them to back off). If you’ve got an ally trying to finish the enemy off in a team fight, you can stand close behind them and use Torch 5 to keep conditions off of them while still cleaving the downed target. When combined with the VoJ active for blind and extra burning damage for your team, it’s a decent skill for wrapping up mid-sized fights.
2) Chasing fleeing enemies, since they have far fewer options to to stop/punish the channel. It gives you a steady stream of damage that stacks burns, refreshes Zealot’s Fire, and keeps opponents in combat. If you’re using the Torch with a Sword, the extra range is also appreciated.
In situations where opponents are more free to react, I’ve found that using Torch 5 generally just gets you punished, and the cleansing mechanic is awkward overall. I don’t think that Torch 5 being situational is an inherently bad thing, especially since Torch 4 can basically be used whenever it’s off cooldown, but it’d be nice if the skill didn’t have quite as many limitations. I also wouldn’t mind raising the skill’s cooldown in exchange for some additional functionality, even if it just cleansed a condition from the Guardian at the start of the channel.
