4 Reasons To Play A Lockdown Mesmer
Regarding the choice of /sword or /pistol, I generally favour pistol in roaming situations for the range on magic bullet, making it feel that much more flexible than /sword. But then again I haven’t run it with CI yet, so it is something I’ll look into to see if sword doesn’t win out after all.
I’ve made my own flavor of stunlock before. In the past, I’ve had troubles facing groups, but one-on-one I almost always dominated unless they got a long lasting stability up. At the time, I didn’t consider using null field to strip that off them… now I know better
You mention that Bountiful Interruption is great with a focus, but there are very few lockdown builds with a focus. What should I be looking at if I want a focus-focused (:P) lockdown build?
I assume:
Not CS, because I’m not dazing
Yes Focus reflect
Yes BI
??? Imbued Diversion?

Checkout chillruption in my signature – there is a GS-Sw/F variant with a guide. No CS, rather chaotic interruption. Yes on focus reflects and BI. Imbued Diversion is used in the original chillruption build but not the GS-Sw/F variant.
Update. The build is a lot of fun. I’ve been running 30/10/30/0/0 and I do not have major complaints.
The only thing is that when going along with zergs, I find that enemy front soldiers have almost perma stability difficult or nearly impossible to strip. It’s one of the many boons thay have and as you know we cannot choose which boons to strip so the lockdown build cannot be played at its full potentialities.
What do you suggest doing in this case? Is switching daze/interrupt skills/traits/weapons valid options or should I just forget and focus on enemies which are not meant to be front line? (however, those players are usually at the back of the zerg and difficult to reach if the the blobs are clashing head to head).
To tell the truth I managed to stack might quite effectively so I still dish out pretty solid damage but the feeling of not being able to interrupt like I would in other circumstances is awfull and make me wish I could swap mantra of distraction on the fly as needed, but ofc… I cannot
after trying the build i can say while its hilariously funny, you are dead if youre focused in a group, you are dead if you come across 2 people at the same time, you are dead if trying to face a zerg, it seems that when hit by immobilise the pressure you can recieve in that short time can get you hurt badly,
i just think im too used to the mobility and trickery of illusionary leap, not too many mesmers use it right and just use it for an immob

Just to be sure, yall are talking about Chillruption? If so, RedCobra, how long have ya been trying it? Builds like that tend to take a week or two to get attuned to.

the mind crush one i just cant ever imagine attuning to it, just doesn’t give out enough damage for the amount of toughness you sacrifice for the interrupts, you wont win against any decent 1v1’rs with it and you wont be much help in an outnumbered fight so it feels kinda trolly for me, don’t get me wrong i really enjoy it and its a game after all.
as for the chillruption, bit of a watered down phantasm build to attempt interuption, what use does the chill sigil have? its CD is 10secs, tbh if youre gonna go interupt you may aswell go all out, especially if youve already gone and eqiuped the staff,
heres a build that i often use when i go interupt as i particularly enjoy the playstyle:

confounding suggestions is so delectably delicious with the staff its hilarious with the more Stuns and dazes and the chaotic interruption id say this is more of a brute lock down, if you were seriously going to consider using my build in a group roam then id definitely recommend replacing the sceptre with a main hand sword your going to need the trickery and evasion.
Ill be doing a build guide on my roaming lockdown but i havnt got round to it yet but heres the link if a couple of you guys fancied tearing it apart before hand :P any feedback is welcome

Looking at the build you posted, I think you should give MindCrush or Chillruption some more time. Those playstyles are very different from the build you posted.
Chillruption is a very technical build, and the chills aren’t supposed to just be mindlessly spammed. Chill makes all skills take longer to cooldown, which means that any interrupts he nails on a chilled opponent will take longer than 5 seconds to recharge; especially dangerous for heals. If you play it with the mindset that “this is just a phantasm build with chill” then you’re going to be missing out on the beauty of the build. It heavily rewards/punishes interrupts and as a result you have to really be used to all the mechanics of the build and that won’t come within a week of trying it out.
Mind Crush isn’t as interrupt-heavy but rather focuses more on chain-dazing opponents. You’re right that the damage is slightly below-average but the lower damage is because of it’s survivability (or rather the investment into the Chaos line, picking up Debilitating and Bountiful). Mind Crush uses interrupts to grow more powerful and to make up for the loss of damage, but also has to dance a fine line between shattering and maintaining Phantasms. It makes use of almost everything a Mesmer can do, and so you have to choose whether you’ll reap more benefits from letting your clones get killed (AoE conditions & Phantasm damage) or actively shattering them. If you use the same gear you’re using in your current build, Mind Crush should actually be more durable than the build you’re running when played properly. Your comment “Wont win against decent 1v1s” leads me to believe that you’re not used to the build yet, as it’s actually very strong vs most 1v1s, but what you described is very common for people first picking up the build, myself included when I originally tested it. It has it’s own rules and own playstyle that’s unlike most other builds out there, which means old habits you have from other builds could potentially be screwing with your learning this build. 2v1s and outnumbered fights are a bit harder to explain, especially since I’ve been running Shatterlock recently rather than Mind Crush, but I’ll check if Helseth has any videos demonstrating his 30/20/0/0/20 build in outnumbered fights.
The build you posted is interesting. Why the scepter? How do you handle condition damage from classes like Necros/Engineers? And with no way to rip boons how do you handle Warriors/Guardians? And I’m not so sure if Sigil of Paralyzation is the best bet for Staff; it’d only benefit Chaos Storm – sometimes – every 35 secs.

id really appreciate the videos tbh you may be right, alot of mesmer builds come down to L2P and can be hard to grasp at first use, especially interupt builds, as for mine, the sceptre is a mediocre clone producer without DE allowing an instant daze along with the offhand sword. im getting kicked out of the office now but ill write a bit up when i get home

I can’t lie, this got me a little hype. Reason #5
I play lock-down mesmer and a Teldo engineer build, in that order.
With a Dev playing lockdown Mesmer (even though he’s not a balance dev) it gives me hopes that we may see some lockdown buffs this year. =D
(And as for videos, my new computer comes in this week! Huzzah! Current one can’t really handle it since I can barely handle playing GW2 at all even on crap settings. -_- /dat Alienware )

Hmm, that’s awesome.
I’m still confused, though, when thinking back to December where the devs said that they consider Phantasm, Shatter and Mantra to be the main Mesmer types…

Had to ask him what build he plays.
