Back from hiatus, Mesmer issues.
Do you want to shatter or use phantasms? I use a shatter build
For WvW, something like this works for me.
Which is swapped out in PvE to this
Also watch this video for tips.

Thanks for the helpful links, but I’m personally looking for a Phantasm build, there’s much less button bashing involved and it feels more relaxed overall.
EDIT: I’m also wondering why nobody seems to get Greatsword Training when playing with a Greatsword, it simply doesn’t make sense to me, could somebody explain?

Well, the gear can stay the same, because it’s basically as little defense as I feel like I can get away with.
and
for traits (or wait for other advice.)
That looks great, thanks alot, I’ll be giving that be giving that build a shot right away!
If anybody still has some suggestions though, feel free to let me know. Any help is greatly appreciated.

25 points in Illusions just to get IC is expensive. If you wanted to retain damage and put those points to more effective use then dump them into Dueling. Perhaps take Phantasmal Fury and Blade Training.

I think a standard phantasm build look like this:
20/20/0/30/0
Traits: Domination III X, Dueling II X, Inspiration II IV VIII

I’m not saying this is the best build, I’m a shatter mesmer, so I may be too focused on Illusions but it’s not “just to get IC”.
Compounding Power gives 3% more damage / illusion, Phantasm builds tend to not shatter so that’s going to be an additional 9% more often than not.
And Phantasmal haste which makes phantasm attack more frequently.
Admittedly, the minor traits in Illusions are not helpful. And the condition / shatter recharge isn’t great either. But it’s not as bad as you make it sound.
Thanks alot again guys, apologies for the late reply though.
I have been trying these builds for the past day and I can safely say that I’m alot more comfortable with playing my Mesmer again, thanks!
I haven’t been on in a few weeks due to some RL stuff, but as of 3 weeks ago the build in my signature was a lot of fun as a Greatsword build.
The main description in the post talks about it as a hybrid phantasm/support build, but there’s a part at the bottom that talks about solo play with it.
Take a look and give it a shot if it looks like something you’d like.
Tarnished Coast [Crit]
fpr pve phantasms best build are:
0/20/0/25/25 (my choice)

or
10/10/0/25/25
IC and those last 25 points are a MUST for pve and the damage loss is not as bad you also get faster phantasm attack rate (les sthan stated by tooltip btw).
You also get bleeding on crit……to makes up for the loss of dps in the end the only nerf that hurts is BF 10 sec instead of 8 <.<
A PvE player is supposed to avoid a 1-2 second 1 shotting aoe.
A WWW player is considered uncapable of avoiding a 5,75 second aoe for half his health.
ANet also made the Chaos tree more powerful with Bountiful Interruption. With 30 in Chaos, Signet of Midnight, and some buff duration food you convert that 5stack, 5sec might per interrupt roughly 8sec duration might. With Counter Blade and traited sword alone you can almost keep up might fairly continuously. You can prep to burst by hitting multiple targets or by rolling your other interrupts to quickly get 25 stacks. 25 stacks translates to a 40 to 50% buff to your Power and Condition Damage which transfers to your illusions. The Chaos tree also has Debilitating Dissipation which I find is very powerful to further tip the scales and maintain pressure. DD also works nicely for Phantasm-oriented builds imo.

Cheers mate, I finally found a great build with my two favorite weapon styles, it feels extremely smooth and I feel like I am contributing something to other people, which is great. Thanks again.

Can you elaborate how IC is necessary? My phantasms rarely go down before the cool down on their skill is up. I have not noticed much of a difference in DPS since the update months ago. I did trait to get IC after the update but went back as I didn’t feel it was worth it.
IC is absolutely not necessary, 20/20/0/30/0 or 10/30/0/30/0 are perfectly viable PvE phantasm builds. You can get cooldown reductions where needed and keep your traits in damage lines instead of wasting them in Illusions.
I haven’t found Phantasmal Haste (which is far less of a benefit than stated) or Compounding Power (which only boosts personal damage, which is sucky anyway) to be anywhere near worth the damage loss.
If you wanted to really optimize you could even steal the last five points from Inspiration to put into one of the first two lines (15/30/0/25/0 probably best), but I find there are so many useful majors that it’s not worth it.
