I am currently looking to roll a new class/build in this upcoming patch and have been checking around all the forums too hear people’s opinions. I currently play mesmer the most at the moment, and have talked to several experienced mesmers about bunker/team support mesmers in the upcoming patch. Does anyone feel this type of mesmer will become viable in competitive PvP (not WvW) after Decemeber 10th? If anyone knows a build(s) that they will be trying out with the new patch for specifically bunking/node control/node harass/or pure team support, I’d love some information!

Skcamow experimented with a blind-spamming bunkerish build called the “Utility Wizard” that went 0/0/20/20/30. May wanna check that out for some interesting ideas.

I’m thinking for a bunker, we’re gonna need iDefender, Mantra of Pain, and possibly iDisenchanter or Mantra of Concentration. After the patch, I’m guessing Mantra builds may make decent bunkers. Something like..

0/20/20/30/0 (Dueling – Mantra traits. Chaos – Staff trait and 3% reduced damage per illusion. Inspiration – Restorative Mantras, Warden’s Feedback, 20% illusion health) Cleric’s Gear/Staff+Sword-Focus/ Superior Runes of …. whatever gives protection. This would give us 600 toughness on mantra charge + a burst heal, iDefender eats half our damage and can be healed by restorative mantras and regeneration. Focus/Warden would reflect projectiles. I think this would be possibly one of the most durable Mesmer created, and with a hefty amount of team support, but your damage would be garb.

An alternative idea would be working with Restorative Illusions in a shatterish build. I’m not sure if 0/10/0/30/30 (ipersona + restorative illusions) or 0/20/15/20/15 (more frequent clone production) would give a better healing output. Mirror Images would be a must here, Decoy would also be a decent option but you can’t cap points while stealthed.

I’m going through a lot of footage to put a video together for the utility wizard build. As an aside, I’ve been working with some others at optimizing a WvW build with a lot of success as well, so I hope to update that thread soon.

As a PvP bunker spec it’s a bit niche, but can be extremely effective if played well. I will say it does have a moderate skill cap. If played in pure clerics, you won’t die often, and party regeneration @ over 280/sec via phantasms on points is very useful. The utilities are signet of midnight, null field and feedback. I sometimes swap SoM for the disenchanter, or you could also throw in the defender. Just depends on your stun break needs, which I primarily use swap (Sword #3) for.

Oh, and no one I know of on these forums would ever expect anything in return for help. One thing I will suggest, are you a member of the online mesmer forum guild (OMFG)? I remember the good ol’ days. My phantasm retaliation bunker….ahhh….Oh well. ArenaNet saw fit to kill that particular build.

Mesmers are unlikely to run a bunker build even half as well as most other classes. Warrior, Guardian, Ranger, Engie….to a lesser extent even Necromancer all run bunker a hell of a lot better than a Mesmer could ever hope to. Sponging up damage is not our strong suit, we’re more in the business of avoiding it. As for team support, that’s an entirely different ballgame. I think the biggest utility a mesmer brings to team fights would be either glamour, DPS, portal, or time warp. Moa gets a honorable mention for flubbing up petting zoos.
