Mesmer Personality Quiz! Exclamation Points!
(edited by Chaos Archangel.5071)
(Note: There’s some excellent discussion about my badness in the comments. Read on for more stuff to learn!)
Wow, so I didn’t realize I could just add notes IN the youtube video. I know it seems obvious to most but… idk.. I’d always overlooked that kind of stuff, still not use to uploading. Nonetheless some new vids up with notes and combo info and a guest appearance by Tealots!
THINGS LEARNED FROM THE COMMENTS
- Don’t attack an engineer on far. Let them die of old age.
- Stop spending dodges too liberally, especially not for the sake of mobility.
- Do not tunnel vision tankish opponents.
- More map awareness!

Nice fights Chaos. You go down a lot :p

Yeah, they should just carry me around on a sled with a little lockdown zappy gun!

I know necro is always a priority target but I do wonder if you’re best focusing him in some of those fights first, at least when you were doing so by yourself. If you’d focused the mesmer, for example, you’d of been able to down him much more quickly. The necro sustained/outlasted you so much that you were constantly burning through all your resources and at times having to wait for something to come back up to keep going. Thoughts?
Phew. I thought you were showing me playing on my mesmer — in those matches where I kept stepping away from the computer. This makes it almost seem like I know what I’m doing in pvp.
It’s weird watching a toon of mine play. But fun watching you. You have gotten way more aggressive with Staff/Sword-Focus and that’s probably not what people expect from a mesmer without a GS. And it’s obviously working.
Really nice portal plays (but you should have recorded the match in Forest! We barely won that one from you stealing far with portal and me sniping creatures!) I think we kept doing the right thing at quarry. Even if I died, I was holding the point in contention for as long as possible. I went down the first time trying to head to you when you were in trouble. For a 2v2 that became a 2v3 with a turret engi, we didn’t do bad.
You can also see some things that people do wrong, like when the enemy mesmer walked back into your iWarden at the Quarry. Or just when I sometimes display my “map unawareness.” But who know LB Survival of the Fittest + Lockdown was such a good/fun team!
@Ross: Which fights? In the beginning, I don’t think the mesmer was a real threat — especially considering he was on point and using GS, so Chaos would interrupt him even if he didn’t mean to (probably). Since the enemy team was just letting a LB ranger nuke from up top, it probably didn’t matter who we killed first there, I’d just rather not risk the Lich. Another strategy could have been to just down the mesmer and not worry about the stomp. For CS interrupts, maybe necro wouldn’t be priority, since the stun comes from dazing and not interrupting. But with CI, Necros have such long casts and no stun breaks, like Chaos said in the video, that it’d be dumb not to focus them. Resources, however, will be burned in a 3v1
You use your dodges far too liberally. Some of them might be defensible (maybe), but many of your dodges were inexcusable. Just because you run energy sigil or have deceptive evasion doesn’t mean you should be spamming dodges.
The most egregious example is 8:09 – 8:18 in the Forest vid. You guys won a team fight, and you were chasing a mesmer, blowing two dodges in the process. When he turned around to fight, you had to use your distortion because you had no dodges. No, the marginal speed boost isn’t a good excuse, especially when you’re pushing into far and see multiple enemies on the screen.

I don’t remember what fight specifically, I don’t want to go back through watching :p But maybe CI/CS thing is the key note. I’ve been playing CS Phantrupt solidly of late and the difference is in that detail. I couldn’t see what the issue was. In the 6, 6, 2 setup I’m also packing a ton of single target damage so a necro can be dealt with on my own much faster.

I think this is a drawback of running DE as the mentality of producing clones for clones sake runs high.
At the same time, clones are strategy, clones are power. They track stealthed targets upon reveal, doing their AA thing, and are available for an f4 shatter.
Its one of those things. Best way to drop the habit is to run a build without DE for a while. Dodges just become dodges again. Incidentally shatters become near non existent :p

You seem a little rusty from last time. Good thing I haven’t seen you on in a while or I would whip you into shape.
As for the vids, some really nice plays with portals and just CI in general. That 4 man pull into chaos storm was perfect and pretty much blew the entire team up. However, you pretty much tunnel visioned the necro while the gs Mesmer was just free casting on you lol. Most gs mesmers (You wish I was) are free kills as CI, but you already know that so I wont lecture you lol. Nice vids.
Actually guys, please keep the criticisms coming. Not just for myself, but for anyone reading the thread and also looking to pick up tips. Seeing where I went wrong is a great way to learn.
@Ross: The Mesmer would’ve taken some time if they were good. The necro was a priority to me because lockdown Mesmer are uniquely suited to take down liches, and necros almost always lich in a team fight. You’re right though, I did overcommit a bit as I didn’t want to count on my team for.. Anything. I think my bigger problem was just poor positioning. 4/4/6 has such excellent defense that its hard not to go ballsout and dive face first into fights. Had I been more concerned with the flow of the battle, I may have been able to be more effective with less risk.
@Mango: You know its interesting. This is something I KNOW I do, and readily admit hat I blow dodges stupidly, yet reading it written back to me from another helps really cement that fact. I’ll keep that in mind for the future and actively work to correct it.
However sometimes I do send clones into fights for a number of reasons: chain dazes, aoe weakness, aegis procs, marks/traps, ether feast heals can all seem like random dodges… And I feel extra stylish jump-dodging. =P
@Warlord: Dude please lecture away, nitpick and pull things apart and let me know my flaws. I learn from fighting and training with you more than anything and I wouldn’t be the only one. Give me a write up on how I coulda done better, or more specifically.. What you would’ve done differently?
@Tealots: I’m still kicking myself for not recording that amazingly awesome match. So many portal plays!
Alright then, lecture away!
In the first vid (ci mes loves gs mesmers and necros) at around 1:30 you engaged the quite tanky necro instead of the zerker lb ranger which would have died much faster then the necro. If the necro liched then I would have swapped target to him. Also no energy sigil on staff?
You did this again at around 3:00 except this time the ranger was at 25% hp casting barrage. That literally says free kill for us CI mesmers lol.
At the 4:30 part where the friendly thief was getting stomped I would have curtained and then chaos stormed to guarantee the interrupt. You should have also left the fight when the necro lich formed. You would have still been alive. At the final fight of this vid you continued to train the soldiers necro while the shatter mes got you to 33 hp. Didn’t focus the mes enough basically.
In the second vid, that start was really bad lol, as you said. Don’t need to comment any further. At around 1:10 you wombo combed the enemy team with that perfect pull into chaos storm. Very nice.
From winning the mid fight you went to far to 1v1 a turret engi. I would not go far at all in this game because if the turret engi afks at far its a 4v5 for the rest of the team which means its a very easy win. Basically this video was just never go 1v1 a turret engi, its just a waste of time. The Mesmer was also soldiers so he was really no threat.

The key is in quickly identifying the target and following through with a snap turn around of the camera. A 180 keybind is useful, but with enough mouse skill you can achieve the same result.
Just wanna extend a big thanks to all of y’all! I’ve got plenty to keep in mind going forward and have noted the major points in the original post.
