i wont have HoT for about 2 months and i always wanted to main a mesmer, now is time but my question is, core mesmer still worth a thing?

As mesmer main getting HoT is not much have. Core mesmer is still viable

Signet of inspiration and focus skill 4 are going to be necessary for running around.

Feedback is still as strong as usual , and the same goes for time warp. Mass invis, portal, null field, veil, etc for WvW.

With chronomancer you gain access to more AoE damage in the form of Well of Calamity , access to shield skills, a team wide invuln in the form of Well of precognition, in addition to all the alacrity from shatters.

Core mesmer is not viable in dungeons or raids. Core mesmer is almost definitely not viable in PvP. Core mesmer is, as it always has been, a worthless afterthought in WvW raid groups.

This pretty much. On the bright side traveler runes are nowhere near as extortionately expensive as before, still 2g each though.

PU power shatter is viable in WvW roaming still and I’d argue it is on par with chrono in that regard.

I pvp and wvw, I can tell you that you can make fine build for wvw for sure as the build I am playing with is old and kinda better than the chrono, but for pvp and pve that’s different matter.

In pvp you kinda don’t kill things these days, so chromos is better (that’s my opinion)
in pve chrono is needed as well.

Another thing is, play Mesmer and main it, it is fun to play =)

Ok, let me a bit more explicit then.

Raids: Not only is Mesmer not the best, it’s literally the worst possible choice to bring out of any class in the game. It brings poor damage and even worse support without Chronomancer. I would kick any core Mesmer from any raid group I was in without a second thought.

Dungeons: While elite specs have largely trivialized dungeons, core Mesmer is in the same position as ever: low damage and support that’s rarely essential.

Fractals: Guardian is a better support than core Mesmer in pretty much every way, so why bring a Mesmer? Chrono, on the other hand, is still fantastic.

PvP: Core Mesmer isn’t viable. You’ll get eaten by revenants, melted by scrappers, massacred by reapers, and you’ll bounce off of chrono bunkers without them even noticing you.

WvW raids: Core Mesmer has never been anything more than a veil-bot since the glamour nerf. If pressing one button then watching everyone else fight is your idea of fun, feel free to keep playing core Mesmer in wvw raids…

To add on to what Fay has said………I think Anet made it so pretty much all the old “core” classes are lackluster compared to their elite specs. I would imagine this was intentional to make the expansion much more appealing.

Open world I don’t think it matters. But anything else, you will be the weakest link on the team and may have trouble getting groups.

Now with that said, if you want to level your mesmer in preparation of receiving HoT, then that wouldn’t be a bad thing so you’ll be ready to work on elites when you get the expansion.

my mesmer is already 80 i was wondering if im not drawing my team in game modes but it looks like i would, i did try pvp and i barely scratched anyone with shatter mes, fractals was ok but i felt like i was hitting nearby nothing (specially against my engi), havent done wvw because i feel better at GWEN than any other classes atm

also i was wondering a good class for map exploration and before this everything pointed to mesmer but not anymore

core mesmer is great for map exploration, it has access to perma swiftness, portal, blink and double blink/portal when needed.

shatter mesmer is also ok in spvp, just pop on some twitch streams …

Permaswiftness only if you sacrifice a utility and an offhand weapon…

Mesmer is awful for map exploration. We’re fairly slow, we do awful dps to rapidly dying mobs because so much of our damage is locked into illusions that die with their targets. The only class that might be worse than mesmer is guardian, but at least they can do damage easily.

I’m curious, who do you think is streaming vanilla mesmer in PvP?

While exploring all u need is a mobility which mesmer have. I wouldnt say that u have to sacrifice off hand. On vanilla mesmer the focus offhand is the best one in open world. Sacrificing 1 utility for perma swiftness … thats ok I think (ie necro has to sacrifice utility for only 25% speed signet)… perma swiftness for 1 utility and u still can use blink and portal with those. And the blink can help u skip large chunks of maps that u would normally have to run around. All u need to kill while exploring are HPs. And that can always be managed with greatsword.
Jumping puzzles are also much easier with portals.

To the streamers. Im prety sure that Xerrex is streaming most of classes using vanilla builds and was on 5th place on legend leaderboards (yesterday) even while using these u say useless vanilla classes. Not saying that chrono is not better Im just saying that vanilla mesmer is ok in spvp when played properly. Chrono is useless as well as vanilla mesmer if its not played properly. Mesmer in spvp is all about rotating on the map, nothing else.

Temporal Curtain on its own cant give perma swiftness without 100% swiftness duration, even then you technically have 1s down time. Only way to get perms swiftness with just the offhand is to also trait wardens feedback AND to use something (runes and food) to boost the swiftness duration by 66%.

But then it kinda stops being perma swiftness by one offhand and more, one offhand, a trait and a heavy commitment to runes and food.

Better yet run signet of inspiration and focus offhand for near per a swiftness without the hassle. Other alternatives for base mesmer include superior runes of speed, traveler and centaur with the mantra heal. Alternatively unlock chrono and enjoy the GM minor 25% speed boost for nothing.

Edit: Do not, ever, ever get into the habit of using greatsword for PvE. Sword is much better and you learn to avoid attacks, you will also get kicked (rightly so) from most things for using a great sword in PvE. There are a few exceptions like when you’re part of a ranged group but that should almost never be the case anymore.

Or maybe just maybe everyone can play however they want? Take a gs and be a core mesmer, if you can work the class, you can do anything. (Chrono has alacrity and quickness, so consider getting it) but still, don’t let people turn you off from trying mesmer. If you like gs, kitten the rest and use the greatsword. If you like scepter, go ahead. If you can make it work, you’ll be fine. Btw, core mesmer is fine in PvP if you know how to use it and are otherwise skillful.

Core mes is still enjoyable. Frankly I’d rather play it and die more than touch pay2win chrono with a ten foot pole. It’s for bad players, much like Blackwater was back in the day.

No, it’s for people that play to win instead of pointlessly handicapping themselves by being bad and then laughing at all those ‘bad players’ that are beating you.

Regardless, that still only applies in PvP. There is no place for core Mesmer in raids or fractals anymore, I would never allow one into a party with me, especially not in a raid.

Edit: Greatsword is a great weapon for open world. Long range, aoe phantasm, secondary aoe skill, it’s very good. Just don’t try to play with it in dungeons/fractals/raids, that’s where it’s awful.

Scepter, on the other hand, is pretty awful for open world too. It’s slow with a single target attack, a very questionable aoe skill, and a single block. Nothing wrong with the block, but everything else about it is garbage in open world.

With chrono, the best open world set is gs+sw/sh. It gives you the most aoe potential from any set of weapons, along with great defense in sw/sh and strong bar-breakers.
